View Full Version : Fear of Errors in Games

This is going to sound really wimpy, but...
Is it normal to be afraid of errors in games?
I'll give an example: When I was 7, I was playing on my grandmother's computer, and I loaded a level to a game named Hocus Pocus. Once loaded the computer shut down completely. I ran out and told grandma about what happened, and we had to crash the system and start anew.
But when we inserted the CD for the Windows 98 reboot thingy, a weird black box appeared and the computer just shut itself down... And personally, it scared the living daylight out of me. (Even though it was night...)
Another example: I was playing a game on my GBC a few years ago and I was playing Link's Awakening. I was walking down a mountain (Can't remember it's name) and then suddenly a message came up as if someone was talking to me. The message was the message that you get when you attempt to push the grave stone to the colour dungeon. Then random glitch picture (Y'know, the rainbow pixel thing...)
Yeah. I was thinking about it the other day, when an error message came up whilst playing Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness, and I almost jumped out of my skin.
So anyway, I could go on for hours about this and go nowhere, so I'll ask, is it ookay or should I go seek out professional help or something?
(By the way, this isn't a joke, before some people go "This is a joke thread, right" Or something like that. And it's happened before.)

Perhaps you should just lay off games for a little bit.

Well, first off, you didn't give me a choice when you asked me 'Can I ask you a question' XD

Anywho, yes, I think it's perfectly alright. I get scared my Halo game is going to glitch up sometime.

But, unless you're completely addicted to games, thus the fear, then I don't think you need any help.

Well, I'm not addicted to games. I do play sport, socialize (Apart from these holidays, where all my friends abandoned me and left for Melbourne...) and take my dog out for a walk every hour or two.
But I guess I should lay off games for a while, lately I've been returing from the library and playing FFXII.

Well, I don't think it is completely strange. (I didn't say it wasn't)

I was a little disturbed at the Glitch City glitch in RB (remember that?). But I was like 7 so...

I have the same fear, so you aren't alone. :)

I HATE buying used games, cause I'm afraid the previous owner fucked with some glitches and ruined the game. My uber-Ruby, in which I have almost the entire pokedex completed, was bought used and I worry every once in a while that there may be a glitch. I actually avoid the cave on Dewford Island because there's supposedly a glitch lurking in there...

Also, for some reason, my Eternal Sonata game stopped working randomly for a second, so I got into the habit of saving after every few fights. XD;;;

Well I know Glitch City in R/B scares the bejeezus out of me. D:

I personally love glitches O: I always try to look for them whenever I get a new game~

But it's really ok to be afraid of glitches, I'd be a little scared too if my computer were to randomly blow up, and Glitch City always bothered me.

I am. I'd crap if Kingdom Hearts Glitched on me. It's like, unglitchable. Never seen or heard of a glitch in Kingdom Hearts.

Glitches can be rather funny sometimes. I was watching my mate playing Gears of War online and it was being laggy. She chainsawed someone but it sawed in the wrong area. She was singing "Numnuts! Numnuts!" on voicechat. Then he joined in xD

in response to the title: no, you can't

in all honesty: there are much more relevant things to be afraid of

You mean the title wasn't the question?!

I'm kinda afraid of them.

They scare me if they're unexpected (random speech box comes up), freaky (noises that Yellow Missingno. made. *shudder*) or if I haven't saved and I lose all of my data.

Generally I love glitches, I really like trying to work out how/why they happen or what their after-effects are. This is one of the reasons why I like older games, it's easier to see how it's coded without actually going into the coding.

Visual glitches are just plain annoying though.

Wow, I thought it was just me. There should be a name for this... Glitchiphobia? =D?

I'm only going to name one instance, but once I started up Emerald. First time I did so, and I had just gotten it. Anyways, I turned it on, but it couldn't read the cart. At least my SP thought it could, because it got past the Game Boy logo, and then the screen when white for a second. Then it started making this creepy static noise. Scared the crap out of me.

Anyways, this is perfectly normal. Don't worry.

Your not alone, my friend. Once, when using my *coughcheatscough* I triggered the Bad Egg glitch.o-o;

I'm lucky it wasn't the DP block.

Wow, not alone... if I'm actively trying to do the glitch I'm fine, but if I'm not expecting it and my game all of a sudden borks up... AUGH WHAT'D I DO

I blame my mom's at-the-time-BF's son (you follow?). As a prank, he made me play this game that was programmed to, after you reach a certain point, "crash" - it showed a blue screen and said that something messed up, the only way to fix it was to reformat, so it was going to do that now, please wait. ._.;; I'm going to blame that. It didn't really do anything to the computer, but... holy crap. I started crying that mom was going to come home and kill me because I was the one who messed up on the game somehow and broke everything. Mind you, I couldn't have been older than 9 at the time, but STILL... now when something glitches... "AUGH I BROKE IT"

Curse you, ex-stepbrother, you've corrupted me for life. D=

...Ugh, I thought I was the only one who had this fear...

I was afraid of computer errors when I was little, and still now... That red circle with the white X in it... the BSOD...

They always make me a little afraid now, I've somewhat gotten over it.

I like glitches, but some do freak me out. I tried one glitch in a game once that let you fall through water that was supposed to kill you and it scared the shit outta me. Glitch City at first creeped me out too, and almost any glitchy noise scares me.

Oh man, I realized today that I really fear the Xbox Red Ring of Death so much. My Xbox had trouble starting up today, and I saw a flashing red light (it wasn't the Red Ring, though, thank goodness) and I nearly died of a heart attack. D:

Ah, my xbox had a problem like that, and it was just overheating.

Hasn't the RRoD been made harder to get now? They've made the holes wider, and the wires less prone to melting. It may still over heat but it would only have a small chance that the RRoD would happen.

Everypeice of hardware or gaming console over heats a time to time. The PS3 is known for it, mine over heated that bloody hard it melted the bloody disc lense, it was only for 2 and a half hours! The other one's disc drive randomly broke and the other two hhad a "rare" memory problem. The only ones I haven't seen over heat was the small PS1 (I had both and the old rectangle one was a bugger for it) and a handheld, which don't have a fan but must be too small to generate that much heat.

I see the RRoD a LOT at gamestop, lol
Y'know I never thought It would happen to me until F.E.A.R, where in one area each time, I get a message saying THE DISC IS UNREADABLEand the disc gets friggin hot. I am getting a replacement, I swear.

That happened to me - I bought a used copy of PMD RRT, and I could only name my characters "Angel" or "Devil" and the B button didn't work.

Graaaah. My Animal Crossing Wild World game is so screwed up.

It freezes on me, it makes weird sounds and freezes...yeah.

It's my game ring's fault, I swear.

Strangely enough, it's the only one that does it. (It's the only reason I have a DS Lite...)

Gah, we need those arrows that let one jump to their last post again. I couldn't tell whether or not I posted here...

Anyways, I am kind of on both sides. I like finding glitches (I STILL say I found the pal park glitch first! But the forums fried and my evidence is lost D:), but at the same time...

Here are a few examples:

1) I used cheats on my Sapphires. It screwed it up so badly that it glitched up without the AR. At one point, my Hitmontop actually disappeared. Didn't play it for a month. Then I lost it for another few months x.x. Anyways, when I found it and played it, the Hitmontop was back. When I tried using Colosseum, its picture (it was the... Third in my party, I think?) quickly popped up, then went away and everything loaded in order

2) When cloning on Crystal, I cloned five Pokemon at once. Apparently, the more Pokemon you clone at a time, the more likely the cloning will go horribly wrong. A whole box went down. I had to catch a Pidgey (Hoot-Hoot?) to allow me access. I then went in, removed the offending Pokemon, and experimented. It was either a glitched Meowth or a Glitchcune (My nickname for a Glitched Suicune). The name was so long, it crashed the game in battle. The daycare centre could handle it though... About 3 or 4 boxes of text, I believe? Anyways, I eventually released the glitches, fearing for my Pokemon D:

And yes, my silver and crystal, to my knowledge, still have working batteries :D Going to replace the batteries in Gold and trade my Shiny Ampharos there. I am NOT losing Hikari D:

3) Managed to hatch an egg in a mystery zone (AR FTW!). I left the mystery zone, and the tiles were not fully loaded. I freaked out and shut off the game.
