• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Search Function

So, I've been wanting to write a search script in PHP or Ruby for a while now, but don't know where to start. I think the main problem would be initiating a function that could look through files securely for keywords, but I'm not entirely sure how to do it.

Ideally, I would love to write it in Ruby, but am not sure how to get that running actually on my site. So help there would be appreciated also.

Wish I could help you there. All I can say is that Google offers a pretty good custom search service. You probably knew that though, didn't you?

Oh lordy.

Generally what you do is feed all of your documents into a fulltext indexer and let it take care of the actual searching for you. Look at Sphinx or Xapian.
