Arena: North Bridge

North Bridge is a large, modern-style bridge, around 100 feet long, that links two hills toward the northern end of a small town. Along each side of the bridge is a sidewalk, and past that is a chain-link fence; beyond that is a thick steel-and-plastic "shield" that comes up about eight feet and then curves inward slightly. This was likely a feature that was added on a bit more recently, to prevent people from throwing stuff off the edge of the bridge (not to mention car crashes going off the edge, or suicide attempts.)
Nothing your Pokémon throw at it is going to cause any significant damage to the bridge's structure, though some attacks might be capable of wrecking the chain-link fence or smashing up the sidewalk.

Underneath the bridge are several old railroad tracks which are rarely used these days; it's likely that the two hills were once one even bigger hill, and the bridge only became necessary after a chunk was dug away to make room for the railroad. The hills on both sides of the bridge are dotted with pine trees and covered in grass; near the edges of the bridge, bushes have grown up in a few places, though the walls of the man-made valley between the hills are mostly bare, with loose, clay-filled dirt and slippery rocks which work together to make them a pain in the ass to climb.

Extra Rules: Despite being a bridge, it doesn't cross any water--so any Pokémon that need to have access to water in order to fight effectively are not suited to fighting here. Likewise, attacks that depend on having a large body of water at hand (such as Surf or Dive) are completely useless, as you'd have to walk at least half a mile to reach any significant amount of water.
In addition to that, using Dig (and other moves that require the presence of sand, soil, mud, etc.) won't work unless you are actually on the ground--no digging into the bridge is allowed, and it wouldn't be very smart to try, since only the strongest of Pokémon would have the strength required to do it. For Pokémon that depend heavily on Ground or Rock-type moves, climbing down the side of the hill and moving the fight to the tracks underneath the bridge is strongly advised!

As this is in the middle of a town, taking Pokémon battles too far from the bridge would not be a very good idea. Though there's an area of paved road and grass stretching out about 10 feet in each direction from the bridge, any further than that and you'd be standing on someone's front yard or driveway--and the folks around here don't like it much when people trespass on their land, especially when it's those damn kids and their poke-ah-mans again.
For every round that the battle takes place on someone's lawn, there is a 1 in 6 chance that an angry resident will come stomping out of their house. After yelling and cursing at the battlers for one action, they will attack one or both Pokémon with a makeshift weapon--some kind of gardening tool, a broom, or a BB gun--and then go back inside once they've hit something. Being hit with a rake/shovel/etc. acts as either Cut or Slash depending on the size of the tool; a blow from a broom acts as False Swipe; and being shot at with a BB gun acts as a Normal-type version of Bullet Seed (all of which are without STAB.)

(...my weird luck strikes again. Finally got a ref... on the exact same day that I stopped regularly checking the forums for it. XD)

Okay... I guess I'll be going with Alberto first.

I'll counter with Purr, the Gabite of awesomeness. Please start out on the bridge. Start out with a fast-action combo, combining Dragon Rush and Brick Break. However, if he Protects, instead Chill on the first action and Iron Head the second. Afterwards: If he tries to damage you, Protect, if he Protects, Chill, if he does anything else, then Double Team (3 clones if you please).

(Dragon Rush+Brick Break)/(Chill~Iron Head)~Protect/Chill/Double Team (3 clones)

*crosses fingers* here goes nothing...

Dragon Rush+Brick Break sounds pretty nasty, so go with Protect first to keep that from happening. Then get in there and grab 'em with Wring Out; that should work pretty well on the first turn. Finally, get ready for the next round with a Defense Curl. No point in attacking again if he's just going to Protect, after all.

Protect~Wring Out~Defense Curl

High up in the hills of nowhere in particular, North Bridge spans a large gap between two halves of a quiet town, its concrete and metal structure standing out sharply against the grass and trees that cover most of its surroundings. Though buildings and streets huddle in amidst the pines, little traffic crosses the huge bridge. This is fortunate for El Garbanzo, as he happens to be standing smack in the middle of the road at the moment, but perhaps less so for the economy of the town. The referee, who has arrived moderately on time for once, is standing at the edge of the bridge, peering down at the railroad tracks below through the plexiglass shield that rises up before her. El Garbanzo taps a foot impatiently, arms folded across his chest, as he waits for his opponent to arrive.

At last, a person appears at the far end of the bridge, walking towards the two trainers at its center. The referee glances up as MurrMurr approaches, footsteps loud on the quiet bridge, then turns away from the edge and gets a clipboard out of the battered backpack lying at her feet. "All right, everybody's here, then. Release your pokémon."

MurrMurr, who hasn't quite reached the middle of the bridge yet, hurries the last few feet while El Garbanzo reaches for one of the pokéballs at his belt and tosses it into the air. The white light it spews settles into the form of Alberto the lickitung, the normal type letting out a gurgling cry as his beady eyes fix on MurrMurr.

MurrMurr gives Alberto a moment of due consideration, then selects a pokémon of his own. Purr the gabite takes shape across from the slobbery lickitung, letting out a happy cry and stretching his clawed arms to the clear sky overhead as he anticipates a battle in his new, more powerful form. "Trainers ready?" the referee asks, scribbling something down on her clipboard. The pokémon tense up and glare at one another, both ready to go. "Let the battle begin!" the referee calls, and her voice is almost drowned out by the immediate yells of the trainers as the first orders of the match fly and the pokémon gear up for a fight.

As it turns out, however, the start of the match is to be quite anticlimactic. Alberto stands where he is, a shield of pure energy springing up around his body. Purr squints across at him and manages to make out the faintest tinge of green in the air surrounding the lickitung. Snorting, the gabite relaxes and smacks his tail against the pavement in annoyance. As long as Alberto's protecting, the gabite's command is to chill out, but he's quite energetic already and finds the break more irritating than anything else. He wants to fight! The gabite watches Alberto closely, waiting for the slightest sign that the lickitung has dropped his defense.

Alberto doesn't keep his protect in place for long; even the impatient Purr is surprised when the dome of energy abruptly flickers out, so surprised that he isn't prepared when the lickitung's tongue lashes through the air and wraps itself around his neck and drags him closer to Alberto. The gabite growls and struggles as the slobbery appendage wraps him tighter in its coils, but Alberto's tongue is extremely muscular, and Purr finds no escape. As soon as he's got a secure hold on the gabite, Alberto constricts his tongue, twisting viciously. Purr squeals as he is wrenched around, vertebrae grinding against one another as the lickitung's attack crushes his body. The breath is forced from Purr's body and pain unrolls throughout his entire body before, abruptly, Alberto's tongue slithers back into his mouth, leaving Purr achy and slimy but free once more.

The gabite gingerly flexes his limbs, wincing as pain shoots through the offended appendages, then lowers his head and prepares for an attack of his own. Steely energy seeps out of his skin as he charges, giving him a glittering helmet of tough metal. The gabite's iron head slams straight into Alberto's stomach, giving him a taste of breathlessness as he staggers backward, stubby hands pawing at the point of impact, which will no doubt soon be sporting an impressive bruise.

Curling in over his tender stomach, the lickitung touches tongue to tail as he tucks in all his limbs and curls into the most compact ball he can, protecting all his most vulnerable areas. Purr straightens up, temporary armor receding back into his skull, then starts jogging around the balled-up lickitung, periodically wincing as his wrung-out body protests. Faster and faster the gabite goes until he is no more than a dark blue blur circling Alberto at incredible speed, the illusions of three more gabite peeling away from his body to run along behind him. As Purr starts to slow again the mirror images remain, shuffling themselves around him and hiding him in their midst. The gabite grins toothily as he comes to a halt in front of the lickitung once more; when Alberto uncurls, he'll have no idea which gabite is really him.

Okay... since there's no way to tell which one's real without hitting them with something, I guess the best way to figure it out would be to hit all of 'em at once. An Icy Wind should work pretty well for that. (Platinum tutor moves are legal now, right?) Next, try and smack him with a Body Slam; if he Protects, just chill until he's open again. If your Body Slam succeeds in paralyzing him, go for a Stomp; otherwise, try confusing him with Supersonic.

Allright, Purr, that wasn't bad. But we can do better.

First off, deal with the Icy Wind by dashing underneath the bridge. Bring as many (if not all) of your clones with you so Lickitung doesn't get a huge advantage. If at any point he comes down after the first action, fend him off with a Dragon Pulse. But if Icy Wind tagged you, Double Team (3 more clones). If he doesn't come down, then create a Twister to go after him

Purr takes one last look at the curled-up lickitung in front of him, then turns tails and flees, clones in his wake. MurrMurr is forced to scramble out of the way as the three gabite come tearing toward him, heading for the far side of the bridge and the relative safety it may afford. Alberto is uncurling, though, and struggles to do so all the faster as he sees his opponent fleeing. Staggering out of his defensive stance, the lickitung goes trundling after, long tongue lolling from his mouth as he jogs along.

Unfortunately for Purr, the bridge is a large one, and it's going to take him a while to get underneath it. Worse yet, Alberto isn't as slow as he looks, and the gabite hears a deep inhalation from behind him. Alberto stops running for a moment to concentrate on his attack, the temperature of the air in his lungs dropping to well below zero, before he releases his breath again as a powerful blast of icy wind. The attack sweeps over Purr from behind, ripping apart his clones and coating the gabite in a thin layer of frost. The dragon, accustomed to only the warmest environments, whines as the awful cold bites deep, freezing up his muscles and making every inch of his body tingle unpleasantly. The end of the bridge is close now, but Purr's movements have become sluggish and stiff.

Alberto starts running again with all the more determination. Purr has just turned off the road at the end of the bridge and started around to get underneath it when the lickitung, running at a flat-out dash, makes a flying leap and slams into him from behind. Both pokémon go tumbling down the slope beside the bridge, though thankfully they stop before rolling out over the edge of the drop off to the valley below. Purr finds himself pinned beneath Alberto, the breath crushed out of his body. For a moment he is stunned, but then he begins to struggle out from underneath his assailant, toothy mouth working soundlessly as he drags himself free of Alberto and staggers away up the slope again, towards the dark, cool area in the bridge's shadow. Forcing his protesting muscles to work through the lingering chill of the icy wind and the more recent indignity of the body slam, the gabite picks up speed. He weaves back and forth through the tall grass, casting confusing shadows over the ground as he continues to accelerate, running in tight circles and throwing off illusionary copies of himself.

Alberto blinks and pulls himself to a sitting position, patting at his tongue to make sure it is undamaged, then wearily pulls himself to his feet. Looking up the hill towards Purr, he finds himself staring down four gabite again, the group silhouetted against the afternoon sun. Grumbling to himself, the lickitung squints at the identical dragons, then decides to aim for the one on the middle-left. Taking another deep breath, he blasts out a warbling screech, much too high-pitched for human ears to hear. The concentrated sound waves of the supersonic travel in tight formation, rippling through the air towards the target gabite--then passing right through it, revealing it to be nothing more than an illusion.

Purr and his remaining clones grin, brilliant blue light leaking out around their teeth before they snap their heads forward, blasting glowing orbs of dragon-energy at their rotund opponent. The three dragon pulses, only one of them real, sail down the hillside and strike Alberto's stomach at the same time, causing him to stagger back a pace as the searing balls of energy burst on contact. Alberto winces as the attack further irritates his already-tender stomach, but the damage isn't crippling; he has plenty of fight left in him yet.

Hmm... well, since you're on the side of a hill, you might as well take advantage of it. Start out with another Defense Curl, then Rollout downhill from there. If you hit him or one of the clones, continue with Rollout. If you miss, try an Earthquake instead.

OK, Alberto's not being nice. We'll just have to remedy that. First off, try and interrupt the Defense Curl with another Dragon Pulse. Get up in his face on the first Rollout with a Brick Break. On the second one (or Earthquake as the case may be), just Protect it off and pray he bounces off and hits something hard.

Tucking his appendages in over his injured stomach, Alberto tightens up into another defense curl. He can't see Purr gathering up energy for another dragon pulse, but a faint humming sound reaches his ears despite the fact taht they're currently blocked by his arms. There's no real bracing himself for impact--he's as braced as he can get at the moment--and the dragon pulse bursts against his exposed back with no decrease in fury for his curled-up state.

Purr watches the blue-green ball of light burst against Alberto's round, pink form with no small amount of satisfaction, but his smugness dies away swiftly as he realizes that the force of the attack has knocked the lickitung back. The curled-up pokémon tumbles over once, then twice, picking up speed as he rolls away down the hillside. Letting out a squeak of dismay, Purr hastens to follow, flailing his finned arms for balance as he jogs down the steep hillside. By this time Alberto has pulled far out ahead of him, wheeling along at a breakneck pace as he hurtles towards the base of the hill. Purr growls to himself as he stumbles along behind, realizing that it's unlikely he'll be able to catch up with the lickitung in time to get off his brick break attack. By this point, both trainers and the referee are on the move as well. They chase after the two pokémon at a distance, wanting to keep the battle in their sight but at the same time not inclined to get mixed up in the middle of it.

Some distance below any of his pursuers, Alberto suddenly pops out of his curled position and goes sailing through the air with the force of his momentum, long tongue flapping like a slobbery pennant. Purr knows what is coming next and skids to a halt, planting his feet firmly and crossing his arms in front of his face. A bubble of energy extends from his body in all directions, encasing him in a tough bubble of protection even as Alberto comes slamming back to earth, landing on his feet with surprising grace and sending tremors rattling through the ground around him. The humans uphill are knocked off their feet and start to roll down towards the competitors, while the bridge creaks and groans as its foundations are rattled. Rocks and chunks of earth break free of the hillside and come roaring down at Purr and Alberto; they simply bounce off Purr's protect, the interior of which is calm and stable amidst the wild shaking of the earthquake, and by some miracle of the attack's nature the lot of them miss Alberto entirely. Purr's clones, though, have protects that are only as substantial as they themselves, and the rattling of the earthquake and flying debris easily rip them apart. Below, Alberto stands and watches the destruction caused by his attack with no more than mild interest.

The tremors gradually die away, leaving the hillside cracked and treacherous, with drifts of displaced rocks and large patches of bare earth where chunks of the hillside had come free and gone sliding away. The three humans come to rest in an unhappy, bruised heap a few feet uphill of Purr; the gabite, meanwhile, uncrosses his arms and lets his protect fall, oblivious to the destruction around him as he plots revenge for his vanished clones.

Final Notes
- Rollout took less energy than usual, since it was used to go downhill. However, because Purr was above Alberto when the round opened, the attack didn't hit anything.
- Purr wasn't able to catch up with Alberto in order to use brick break, so the only energy he used that action was for running.

Alberto tentatively steps out of the small circle of untroubled ground that surrounds him and tests his weight on the ripped-up hillside. Though loose dirt shifts disconcertingly beneath his weight, the lickitung digs in a foothold and takes another step up the hill, following that with another and another until he is making a mad dash towards his opponent above. Purr frowns, his stomach gurgling as it churns up volatile gases. Alberto is obviously enjoying his uphill run much less than he did his downhill roll, slipping unsteadily around as earth crumbles beneath his footfalls. He's making good time, though that might change after he gets a faceful of Purr's next attack.

Like any other dragon, Purr can cook up a bit of flame on short notice, and the bubbling chemical reactions in his innards give rise to highly flammable precursors. These ignite as Purr opens his mouth and forces them up and out, spitting a long streamer of fire at his laboring opponent. Alberto ducks and shields his face with his paws, his pinkish skin reddening furhter beneath the heat of the flamethrower, but much to Purr's dismay, he is only temporarily inconvenienced by the attack. After that, it's back to scrambling up the hillside and, at last, hurling himself right into Purr and knocking them both to the ground.

Though there isn't as much momentum behind Alberto's body slam as there could be, Purr nevertheless finds himself acutely aware of just how much the rotund pokemon weighs as he lies stunned on the ground, the breath knocked from his body. Alberto recovers first, getting back to his feet--and then lifting one foot high and bringing it slamming down on Purr's chest as the gabite begins to stir. Purr lets out a startled cough as the lickitung's stomp slams him back to the ground, giving the gabite a livid bruise to match the one stretching across Alberto's stomach.

The lickitung backs away as Purr pulls himself to his feet, wheezing a bit and clearly unsettled, but determined to get back at his opponent no matter what. The gabite utters a low growl and spreads his finned arms wide, a glowing trail of light zigzagging across the ground towards Alberto. Once it spreads out beneath the lickitung, the earth erupts in a blast of ground-type energy. Alberto is knocked off his feet as he is pelted with stinging, glowing dirt, and the ground itself seems to be burning. The already ripped-up hill threatens to give way and send him sliding toward the bottom, but the smarting lickitung grabs with arms, legs, and tongue, digging into the hillside despite the unnatural glowing of the ground beneath him and manages to stay where he is. As the storm of ground-type energy abates, Alberto is left abraded and sore, but at least he's not at the bottom of the ravine.

His relief is short-lived as Purr looms over him, prepared to follow up on the earth power. The gabite hasn't got much of a fist to clench, but he hooks his lone claw in towards his body and draws his arm back, preparing to deal the lickitung a shattering blow--only to have his fist smack straight into an invisible barrier hovering just before Alberto's face. Purr growl and shakes out his arm, glaring at his opponent; it's Alberto's turn to thwart an attack with protect, and not even a brick break can crack his barrier.

Alberto gets back to his feet, brushing dirt from his broad stomach and spitting grit out of his mouth. Purr has braced himself in a defensive posture, the ground around him glowing once again as he pours his life energy into the dirt. Alberto smirks and presses his palms together in front of his face, closing his eyes and concentrating. Purr pays him no attention, all his focus on the earth now rising up before him, shifting and twisting like something alive as it takes the shape of a gabite.

Utilizing what mental powers are available to him, Alberto sends a disorienting burst of energy into the gabite's short-term memory, swarming over the recollection of his earth power attack, burning back along axons to the center of his brain responsible for coordinating the attack and throwing it into confusion. The gabite's head snaps back and he lets out a snort as though he's been swatted across the snout. He feels strange, though he can't quite put a claw on why. Shaking the odd feeling off, he throws his all into the final stages of his substitute's assembly. Veins of glowing light snake up through its earthen body, stabilizing its shape and imbuing it with volition. Pinpricks of silver light gleam where the substitute's eyes should be and it gives itself a good shake, sending bits of dirt flying in all directions.

Looking up the steep incline to the bridge above, Alberto resigns himself to a long trek and starts to climb towards the road. Purr tenses as the lickitung goes past, expecting some attack, but Alberto ignores him, only concerned with reaching the top of the hill. Unstable ground causes him to stumble and slide more than once, but determination eventually sees him climb past the humans and settle on a relatively undisturbed spot a few feet below the road.

Once it's clear that Alberto means him no harm, Purr starts to kick at the loose ground below him, throwing dirt and clods of sod into the air. Flapping his finned arms wildly, he catches the debris up in weak air currents that grow fiercer and fiercer as he infuses them with raw energy. The little cyclone of grit grows larger and darker, ripping up topsoil and tugging at what plants remain rooted in the hillside. A dark cloud of howling winds and flying detritus expands outwards from the gabite's position until it encompasses the entire hillside. As high up as he is, Alberto is on the outer fringes of the sandstorm, but the grit-laden winds irritate his injuries nonetheless.

Hunkering down, the lickitung lets himself sink into a deep trance, unlocking the natural healing powers lying dormant in his body. As energy pumps through his veins, he takes on the appearance of slumber, breathing deeply and drooling unabashedly, oblivious to the raging sandstorm. Purr, meanwhile, raises one foot high and brings it down in a solid stomp, sending a wave of seismic energy crawling down to destabilize a faultline lying far below. As tectonic plates grind against one another, a storm of tremors come rising up in response. Once more the ground around Purr heaves and shakes. The bridge groans and sways, cracks spread out across the tarmac of the road, and Alberto is bounced from his perch, sent rolling down the hillside at breakneck speed. It is only through sheer luck that Purr or his substitute isn't flattened as the lickitung comes flying down the hill, bouncing along the trembling earth and rolling wildly down the slope.

As the earthquake dies away, Alberto comes to rest near the base of the hill, caught up in a thick band of debris that has collected on the low ground. Miraculously, the lickitung is still fast asleep, his rest not yet having run its course.

Terrain Notes
The hill is even more torn up before, with clear cracks starting to form in the earth in some areas. Moving around on the hillside now carries a serious risk of being carried away after the collapse of a loose patch of dirt, and all manner of debris has started to collect in the valley. A raging sandstorm masks most of the destruction from view (six more actions).

Final Notes
- MurrMurr attacks first next round.

Earthquake, then Flamethrower, watching out for incoming Sleep Talks. On the third action, wait for him to attack, then if your Sub breaks use Double Team (3 Clones) and if it stays use Toxic.
