Terrain: The Battle Factory

The Battle Factory’s arena is simple but practical: a large clay arena bordered by a two-meter-wide, three-meter-deep trough of water to accommodate water-dependent pokemon and attacks. The ceiling is retractable, allowing weather attacks to be used. Other than that, there’s nothing of note: just wide-open brawling space with nothing to get in your way.

The Battle Factory’s stands are mostly empty, housing only a few bored-looking spectators and one old guy who has apparently fallen asleep. The only enthusiastic-looking attendees are probably members of one of the competitor’s families. The first round of the Championship tournament isn’t the most highly-anticipated event in the history of the League, but for the challengers loitering to one side of the arena, it is just as important as any other match. Doing their best not to show any nervousness they might be feeling, they crane their necks to watch a huge screen mounted on the side wall between them. For now, it shows only their own names and faces, but at a signal from the referee, images of pokemon flash at the bottom of the display, a dizzying cascade of different species.

The randomization seems to last an age for the competitors whose victory may rest on what the computer chooses, but it is really only a few seconds before six images settle on the screen and, with a rattle, six pokéballs are dispensed into depressions below the display. The two trainers step up and select one pokéball each before making their way to the boxes marked off on either side of the arena.

A brief, muted stir of activity sweeps the stands. The League Championship is about to begin, and even the most jaded of spectator’s can’t help but feel a little thrill as the referee calls out the match’s beginning and two pokéballs are hurled into the air.

For this battle, you will be using a rental Pokémon instead of one from your team. The six (only one of each) available to you are the following:

Numel (F) <Simple>, Weepinbell (F), Spearow (M), Gastrodon (M) <Sticky Hold>, Grovyle (F), Feebas (M)

*waves to her sister* hey Maria!

I'll claim Grovyle then!

Ok lil' lady, let's see what we can do. Start things off with Attract, seeing as you're a girl and that Feebas is male~ Follow up with Captivate, then finish with Thunderpunch. if at any time you cannot attack him due to Protect and similar, then use Swords Dance.

Attract/Swords Dance ~ Captivate/Swords Dance ~ Thunderpunch/Swords Dance

ETA: oh and i forgot; I'll call this here Grovyle 'Kusa' for this battle

I'll be sending Feebas into the water.

Dive underwater and keep your eyes closed tight, ignoring your opponent. Next action, rise to the top of the water and use a Hail attack, quickly diving back down afterwards. End the round with a Blizzard, or an Ice Beam if you think it'll hit, again rising to the surface to attack.

Ignore opponent underwater~Hail~Blizzard/Ice Beam

You're going down, FMC.

The atmosphere in the arena is far from electric, what with the lack of a crowd, but Blastoise 248 and Full Metal Cookies don't seem to mind, anxiously scanning the screen to determine which choice they should make. After a moment's thinking, the two competitors pick out their choices and send them out. Kusa the grovyle welcomes being sent out, happy to be able to stretch his limbs—it's been a while since she's been out. The feebas Blastoise428 sends out is less enthused; he merely darts to the bottom of the trench and waits.

Round 1

Kusa dashes over to where her opponent was released, and leans over the water, looking at the fish. The grovyle musters up every ounce of charm she possesses, avidly attempting to convince the feebas that she is the most awesome guy in the world. Unfortunately, the effect is lost on him; he has his eyes shut tight and the water turns Kusa's words into a distorted, garbled mess.

The aquatic pokemon cautiously opens his eyes and, judging there to be no immediate threat to his self, hurriedly swims to the top of the trench, gathering an icy blue aura about herself as she goes. Kusa is more than a little surprised when a mottled brown shape pops out of the water and shoots a shining blue beam upwards. Dark clouds gather overhead, even as the temperature sharply drops. There is a tiny pause, before the heavens open up and an army of small hailstones fall towards the earth. By this time, the feebas has already retreated underwater, but Kusa has no choice but to shield her eyes and take it. Deciding that trying to get the fishy's attention probably won't work a second time, the lizard instead performs a rapid, rhythmic dance to boost his strength. It's a little harder to focus with all the ice striking him, but Kusa manages, leaping and bounding. A little while later, the grovyle finishes, panting slightly a bit but feeling invigorated and ready for some fish hunting.

The fish in question has once again risen to the surface, and seeing Kusa close by, aims carefully and fires off a beam of partially frozen ice and snow. The grovyle yelps in shock as the ice beam catches him right on his mouth, but soon collects herself. She's not about to let a little cold stop her. Kusa gathers a sizable amount of electricity around his left hand, and moves to beat up the fish. By this time, the feebas has already dived back down, so the grovyle can't reach him; instead, she sticks her fist in the trough, hoping that the electricity will do her job for her. This, however, does not go as planned—the water severely hampers its progress, and although the feebas shudders as the current passes through him, he is not harmed very much.

Good job. Blizzard on the first action. Follow with an Icy Wind, then, if visibility is okay, Ice Beam. Otherwise, use Swift.

If the weather is changed, replace the next action with Rain Dance.

Also, try swimming around the pool when possible, so that he doesn't get too good of an idea of your location.

You swapped their genders there. Kusa's female, the Feebas male.

Anywho.

graaarg. Damned fish. You'll show him, eh Kusa? Well, start with Detect - getting hit with a blizzard would suck, wouldn't it? Then wait for him to come up and nail him with Seed Bomb! Finish the round by waiting again and smacking down on that fishstick with Leaf Storm.

Round 2

Kusa tenses, greatly heightening his senses and reflexes, ready for anything. The grovyle stays stock still as she scans the arena, waiting for the feebas to pop up. There's not going to be any more shenanigans with ice to the face now, she thinks. Sadly, Feebas has other plans. The ragged fish pokes his head above the water and notes what appears to be his opponent doing nothing. Well, so much the better, then.

Feebas closes his eyes, concentrating intensely—he doesn't want to mess this up. A pale blue aura begins to shine from the fish, and the temperature drops even further, prompting a few audience members to stand up and leave; this extreme cold and the constant hailstones just aren't worth it. Kusa, too, glares at Feebas warily—just what is he planning? Her question is answered with a loud howling, growing louder by the minute. The lizard looks up just in time to see a wall of whiteness bearing down on her. Shocked, Kusa tries valiantly to outrun the blizzard, but it's no use; it's like an entire storm front decided to go after her. Soon, the blizzard catches up to her, violently buffeting her back and forth and pummeling her with snow and ice. After a minute of this assault, the storm clears, revealing the grovyle lying on the ground, now sporting a block of ice encasing her right arm and part of her chest. Kusa struggles back to a standing position, seething with pain and rage. This is not how things are supposed to go.

Feebas peeks out over the water at Kusa; the gecko has gotten to her feet and—oh dear, she's rushing at him. Well, some more ice should solve that. Kusa is mere feet from Feebas when the fish blows out a frigid wave of snow, striking Kusa on her knees and leaving a thin coating of ice on her legs. The grovyle stumbles, almost falling, and lets out a string of curses. It's not enough that that bottom feeder froze her arm to her side, no, he has to freeze her legs, as well! Well, she's not going to stand for this. Quickly, Kusa generates a floating green ball, which forms itself into a group of seeds. The grovyle then hurls the bundle at the retreating form of Feebas, hoping that it will work. The seeds hit Feebas' back and explode forcefully, pushing the fish down to the bottom of the trench. Nursing his wounds, Feebas rises and swims off to the left, not wanting to have explosives thrown at him again.

Kusa would very much like to have a breather right about now to melt all this ice off, but she receives no respite. Feebas pops up again, this time in a different location, and fires another concentrated beam of snow and ice, smashing into Kusa's side. The grovyle shouts in pain and turns towards the fish, eyes narrowed. For a second she stays there, and Feebas wonders what she is waiting for. His answer comes n the form of an explosion of grass energy, searing at his body with deadly force. Feebas cannot resist the maelstrom of natural power and energy slamming him, and simply flops around uselessly, hoping that it will end soon. At last, Kusa gives out, panting and sweating. That attack was terribly draining, but damn it it was worth it to see Feebas suffer.

...grrr. Not going how we want it!

Ok. Let's think here, Kusa. Start us off with a Sunny Day. You're faster, even partly frozen, so that should help. Next, if the fish starts to change the weather again (which it should have to come up to do), then use Solarbeam. If it doesn't, then relax; use Synthesis. We need all the health we can get. Then, if the fish surfaces again, stay where you are and fire off a Seed Bomb again. If he doesn't, Swords Dance, and try to break off some of that ice.

Sunny Day ~ Solarbeam / Synthesis ~ Seed Bomb / Swords Dance

Feebas, you're faster than that lizard with Swift Swim, so...

Hypnosis on the first action, and try to do it before that overgrown newt can use Sunny Day. Follow with a Mist, and finish with Surf if you think there's enough water, and Chill if not. Also, if you use surf, concentrate on riding the wave back into the water.

Round 3

Feebas was hurt rather badly by Kusa's last attack, and thinks that putting her out of commission is a fine idea. That idea in mind, the fish's eyes glow a deep purple, and he begins sending waves of psychic energy towards Kusa, trying to alter her brainwaves. Unfortunately, the relative distance and the constant presence of the hail weakens its signal, and Kusa has plenty of time to realize what's going on; she forces her eyes away from her opponent, light-headed, but mercifully not asleep. Feebas' consternation at his failure turns into wariness when Kusa starts glowing a fiery orange. Just when she appears to be almost consumed by the aura, it shoots upwards, breaking apart the clouds above and exploding far overhead. Moments later, the dark clouds disperse, leaving an intensely bright sun. The temperature in the arena rises rapidly to uncomfortable levels, particularly for Feebas, who sinks underneath the water's surface in an attempt to escape the heat.

Feebas hates to be above the surface with the sun shining as brightly as it is, but what he's about to to should be worth it. The fish opens his mouth, and a cloud of water droplets starts spreading out around him, shrouding his end of the arena in a pale fog. Meanwhile, Kusa sets to putting that sun to use. Her skin flares as her photosynthesizing abilities go into overdrive, and the ice on her body begins to melt at a slightly faster pace. Her wounds seem to get better before the audience's eyes, and when she's done, the grovyle appears quite healthy, if not exhausted from the effort and still sporting a coating of ice.

Feebas feels a bit better with his mist covering him, but he still feels the oppressive sunlight on his skin, and he isn't sure there's enough water here to make a huge wave under these conditions. Besides, the arena's rather large and his mist obscures his senses, and he doubts he can hit Kusa with a surf, and go back to the water at the same time. He'd also rather not leave his mist behind. Instead, Feebas sinks down to the bottom of the water trench and relaxes, letting some energy flow back to him.

Kusa squints she can't see that fish anywhere, not that she'd be able to, and she doesn't see any attacks forthcoming. Besides, she'd like to get this ice off. Kusa once again springs into dance, spinning and leaping to some ancient rhythm, intensifying her fighting spirit. With a great effort, the grovyle rips her right arm from its icy coffin. There's still some ice on her chest and legs, but eh, it'll go away soon with some luck.

A fine mist is cloaking the area around Feebas (3 actions remaining).

Notes:
-Mist didn't prevent Synthesis or Swords Dance because the arena is described as being large and I don't think an unevolved pokemon could cover all of it, especially when Sunny Day is in effect.
-Similarly, Mist won't last long under this weather.
-Kusa managed to break the ice around her right arm due to the sunlight and that +4 attack stat.

Round 4

Feebas would dearly like to get rid of the painful sunlight, and replacing it with some rain seems to be the best way to do it. That idea in mind, the fish begins an intricate dance, weaving, twisting and even leaping into the air, pleading to the gods to send rainclouds and chase away the sun. Meanwhile, Kusa cautiously advances through the mist—even in this sun, it's still blocking her view of her opponent. After taking a few steps in, the grovyle recognizes the shadowy form of Feebas flopping around; what he's trying to accomplish, she doesn't know...at least, until a shadow forms over the arena, and torrents of rain hurtle downwards. Kusa hisses with irritation-she had just finished melting that ice on her legs-and turns towards Feebas, who has just finished his little dance. Kusa would prefer not to go swimming, even to escape the rain, and so prepares another bundle of volatile seeds and hurls them at where she thinks Feebas is. Her aim is true, and her seed bomb strikes Feebas and explodes. Feebas cries out in pain as the explosion sears his skin; this attack was noticeably more powerful than the last, and he's not sure how much more of this he can take.

Kusa steps back a little and focuses, channeling energy into a protective barrier. A shimmering green barrier slowly forms around her, and is quickly joined by another shield, this one with a grid pattern. Meanwhile, Feebas ponders his trainer's orders while nursing his wounds. He doubts there's a way to mix flying stars with an ice storm, and swims upwards as fast as his bruised body will allow him. Feebas surfaces after a moment and groans in exasperation. He can clearly make out the protect shield through the fading mist, and knows that he can't damage Kusa. His new trainer's orders are law, though, and Feebas resignedly shoots out a flurry of bright stars at his opponent. As expected, his attack uselessly pinks off of Kusa's shield, and the lizard allows one layer of her protection to fade away, a little miffed at expending energy on blocking such a weak attack, but still pleased nonetheless.

Feebas decides that if he can't beat up Kusa the straightforward way, he might as well send her into a rage. The fish shouts volleys of insults in the snidest tone he can imagine, laughing at how she's obviously so very ineffectual and cowardly at being afraid of a simple swift attack, trying to rile her up. However, when he pauses for air, Kusa is not rabid with anger as he had hoped, but instead looking back at him, a small smirk on her face. At the same time, the mist dissolves into a few wispy strands -- the combined effects of the sun and rain have dispersed it prematurely.

Round 5

Feebas gathers together water in a dense blob, and adds some air bubbles to its underside. He molds and shapes it until it looks admirably like a feebas, adding in clay from the trench to give it some substance. With a light tap, Feebas transfers some of his life energy into the construct, bringing it to life. The substitute gently floats upwards, rising to the surface. Kusa tenses when a Feebas-shaped object comes into view, but snorts derisively when she realizes what it is. That fish hoped to fool her with that? Really. Shaking her head, she lies down on the floor and relaxes, regaining some much appreciated energy. The substitute, for its part, simply stares blankly at the grovyle, bobbing up and down.

Feebas looks up at his double, slightly puzzled; wasn't Kusa supposed to attack it? Still, it's protecting him, and that's a good thing, considering what his opponent has thrown at him. Cautiously, he swims up to the surface, readying another blizzard. The room temperature drops once again, and the raindrops pelting the arena suddenly freeze into snow or blocks of ice. At the same time, a vicious winds picks up, hurling the snow and ice and Kusa and battering her with its freezing cold. Fortunately for her, none of the stuff stays on her thanks to her safeguard, a fact she is very grateful for. Even so, the attack was quite painful, and some vengeance is in order. Her leaves suddenly experience a rapid growth spurt, becoming longer and razor sharp. Kusa leaps at Feebas, trying to get to him before he disappears underwater. Before she can slash him to bits, Feebas' substitute throws itself in between the two, ready to take the attack. Kusa takes this in stride, and brings down her leaves on the construct. The blades easily cleave the substitute in two, destroying it in one blow. Feebas shudders as pieces of his substitute sink past him; he's lucky that didn't happen to him.

Perhaps another blizzard would drive the crazy lizard back. Feebas once again sends an ice storm at Kusa, and although she shivers painfully from the assault, she is not deterred. Before Feebas can retreat underwater, Kusa bounds forward and slashes the fish, cutting down the length of his back. The water type flails around painfully, staining the water with blood, and the grovyle smirks with satisfaction. Her safeguard meanwhile quietly fades away, no longer being fueled by Kusa's energy.
