Ok, Harold, looks like they're going to try to Rock Blast you. Let's try to prevent that with Smokescreen. With luck you'll be faster than Roxx, so try to protect yourself with Defense Curl before Rock Blast hits you, if it does at all. And that Substitute will have to go, so finish up by attacking it with Rollout.

Round One: Begin

Clay is not water. It is flat, hard, solid and dry, and water is none of these things. Roxx the Remoraid does her best to balance herself on her short fins despite the disquieting lack of water, each of the three points supporting her weight like a tripod. She looks around uneasily, unsure of herself; if she's asked to do any moving around on terrain like this, it's not going to be pretty. The appearance of her opponent, a small male Cyndaquil by the name of Harold, does calm her nerves somewhat. At least a Fire-type shouldn't be too hard to deal with, right?

As the flames on Harold's back flare into life, he is thinking the exact opposite. Water-type, huh... that's no good. But at least I can move around better than she can, right? Hoping that his mobility will give him at least a little advantage down the line the Cyndaquil stokes his flames even higher, and smoke begins to drift outward from his body.

Roxx has shifted her attention to Harold--specifically, homing in on his unique energy signature and focusing on only that--in an attempt to stave off her discomfort. Even as a thick blanket of billowing gray smoke falls over and surrounds her, irritating her sensitive gills and completely obscuring her vision, Roxx knows exactly where Harold is. Now all she has to do is make use of that knowledge before she suffocates in this smog...

The fish Pokémon concentrates hard on the clay floor around her, ripping four decent-sized chunks out of the ground and hurling them right through the smoke at Harold's spot, all four slamming into the Cyndaquil in quick succession. Harold flinches and winces--the hard, packed earth stings like crazy--but luckily enough it only struck his back, not the tender face and belly he has hidden away by curling into a little ball. He curls up even more, hugging his knees so tightly to his chest that it hurts just a little, but no more impromptu stones come hurtling his way.

All Roxx knows is that she scored four clean hits; blinded by the smoke as she is, she has no way of knowing that Harold his doing his best to protect himself. She is more concerned about protecting herself at the moment anyway, and so she shuts her irritated eyes and wills into being a vaguely fish-shaped network of shimmering blue energy. As the watery-looking construct fades into existence, Roxx herself seems to be fading out of it: the Remoraid disappears to parts unknown as the finishing touches are put on the substitute.

As Roxx cannot see out of the smokescreen, so does Harold have trouble seeing into it. The Cyndaquil begins to rock back and forth in his curled-up position on the ground, working on building up momentum in blissful ignorance of his foe's vanishing act. At last he begins to roll forward, into the smoke, picking up speed as he goes; he is rolling along at quite an impressive clip when he collides with the substitute, knocks it into the air and continues rolling past it. The substitute hits the ground with a smack but does not react and appears to have sustained only minor damage--Roxx made it out of fairly stern stuff, it would seem.

Arena Status: A thick blanket of dark smoke hangs low over the colosseum, obscuring the floor immediately around Roxx's substitute and making it difficult to see in or out of the area. Four small holes dot the ground around Roxx.

Ref's Notes
-Since Smokescreen has a pretty widespread effect and is obscuring the area around Roxx, Harold's accuracy will also be reduced slightly if he tries to aim an attack at her.
-Since no description for the colosseum was given, I'm just sort of making it up as I go along (hence the clay floors, etc.). Hope that's okay.
-Rock Blast hit four times. As far as I can tell there are no actual rocks here, so she improvised with the floor; the attack is considered Ground-type as a result (not that it makes any difference to Harold).
-Since you didn't specify how big you wanted Roxx's substitute to be, Flarginsnarf, I randomized it and got large (20%).
-Minnow attacks first next round.

Okay. Harold, keep on Rolloutting if you can. If the substitute fades and you still have actions left go ahead and burn her with Will-O-Wisp. If you stop Rolloutting for any reason then use Aerial Ace instead.

And try not to fall into those holes.

Rollout/Aerial Ace ~ Rollout/Will-O-Wisp/Aerial Ace ~ Rollout/Will-O-Wisp/Aerial Ace

Okay, you're doing good Roxx! Try to keep up your defenses with your substitute. If the substitute fades however, try using a swift attack just to make sure of at least one hit this round! Then follow that up with attract and water pulse, hopefully Harold will either get infatuated or confused.

Substitute/Swift ~ Substitute/Attract ~ Substitute/Water Pulse

Wait... I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, Flarginsnarf. Are you asking Roxx to create new substitutes, or just to maintain the one she already has? You can't have more than one substitute as far as I'm aware, and once the sub has been created it's created and it's there--you don't have to keep "commanding" it in order to have it protect Roxx, as it will do that on its own until it is destroyed. Could you maybe clarify what your orders mean?

Oh... I think I screwed up. For some reason I got the thought in my head that you couldn't attack while substituted -and I was trying to say that Roxx would attack once it was able to- and if the substitute didn't fade, I wanted it to just stay protected. So just ignore the command substitute, or I can edit it if need be.

Sorry for the confusion! :sweatdrop:

Round Two: Begin

Harold wheels across the colosseum floor, right past Roxx's substitute and then turning on a dime and hurtling back into the thick smoke. The false Remoraid, faint blue glow barely visible through the smog, is no match for the Cyndaquil that careens into it; it disintegrates in a shower of light upon impact, forcing the real Roxx out of hiding and dumping her unceremoniously onto the ground in Harold's wake. Startled and disoriented, she struggles and flops around for a few seconds before finally managing to get her fins underneath her and prop herself up. Trembling with nerves and lack of fresh water passing over her gills, she squints through the thick blanket of gray for any sign of where her attacker might've rolled off to. Without her earlier energy signature trace she can't see or sense him at all; nervous and with no indication of which direction she should be facing, she fires a barrage of glowing golden stars from her open mouth. The stars slice through the smokescreen with ease and then bank left, colliding with Harold as he turns to rush back in with even greater momentum. The swift attack leaves several tiny, stinging cuts, but the fire mouse continues his wild surge across the battlefield unabated.

And so it is with even greater force that Harold doubles back and crashes straight into the real Roxx at last, thundering over her and temporarily flattening her beneath his tightly curled body. The unbridled ferocity of the strike leaves the floundering fish in incredible agony. Unable to right herself immediately and with little glowing stars of her own doing pirouettes in front of her vision, the Remoraid can barely manage the feeble little gasp of insincere praise her trainer has asked for. However forced and strained it may be, however, it catches the Cyndaquil's attention all the same. Roxx grits her teeth and goes on, grateful for the smoke hiding her pained grimace and trying not to flinch or vomit as she commends his strength and compliments how cute his tushie looked as it rolled over her.

This stops Harold cold. He sticks out a stubby arm and drags it along the ground, bringing his rollout to a screeching halt before he uncurls and stares incredulously into the wall of smoke. His tushie is cute? Really? He wouldn't have thought that a fish would be terribly interested in mammalian tushies, but... he twists himself around at an awkward angle, trying to get a good look at his behind. This proves to be a rather futile effort and so he resolves to examine his bottom more closely when he next has access to a mirror. For now he can't help but feel quite flattered by his opponent's statements, though. His tushie really must be some kind of cute for her to point it out after he'd just run her over...

...gosh, he wishes he hadn't done that now. He hadn't been able to see what had happened through the thick black smokescreen, but it felt like he collided with Roxx pretty hard. She must be in a lot of pain right now, and it's all his fault... the last thing he wants to do to someone who has offered his tushie such high praise is cause her even more pain, but his trainer insists that he attack. With a guilty conscience the Cyndaquil holds out his right paw, unsheathing three tiny but razor-like claws from its tip; then, biting his lip, he charges headlong back into the smog. Whether by impeccable aim or sheer dumb luck he manages to connect, dragging his little claws along Roxx's striped scales and opening a series of shallow parallel lacerations on her side. Roxx cries out, eliciting a pained flinch from Harold. He turns around slowly, already preparing his profuse apologies in his head, only to be met with a second scream and a blast of water right to his face. Harold staggers straight back out of the smokescreen, his head soaked and and his thoughts scrambled by the scream. What was that? Was it Roxx? He couldn't see her and can't figure out why she would attack him, with water of all things, after complimenting him like that... he sits down hard on the clay, hands over his ringing ears, and moans softly as he slowly drip-dries in the sunlight.

Ref's Notes
-Attract caused Harold to cease rolling out and uncurl; as he is no longer curled up his defense boost goes away.
-Roxx hit the damage cap on the third action.
-Water Pulse confused Harold.
-I apologize for the delay.
-Flarginsnarf attacks first next round.

It would depend on the attack used after it. Never-miss moves and perfect accuracy aren't allowed to outright ignore all the laws of physics and Lock-On just has to do with sighting, so if it isn't already an attack with reasonable homing ability Lock-On isn't going to magically grant it that effect. So Octazooka would still miss if you could get out of the way in time and Roxx couldn't follow you, yes.

So, Harold, start off with an Eruption. I know you don't have loads of health left, but it should still do quite a bit of damage. Remember, Roxx doesn't really love you, it's just a facade to distract you, trust me.

Now, we can't have you losing accuracy so Protect yourself from Octazooka. Lastly Dig underground a meter or two and stay under. Go towards Roxx while under if you have time.

Round Three: Begin

Her body still buzzing with pain and discomfort, Roxx hunts down Harold's energy signature for a second time. Dazed as she is it takes her a few moments to find it and really focus on it, but find it she does--even through the blinding smoke she can "see" the fluctuations in his mood, in his body temperature, in the aura he gives off... she knows exactly where he is and clings desperately to that knowledge, hoping to get a chance to make use of it before she loses track of him again.

And then the Cyndaquil suddenly becomes much, much easier to spot. The flames on Harold's back sputter into life again, instantly turning the dampness in his fur to steam and then flickering unsteadily for a few seconds before rising into a small bonfire. Harold hesitates for just a moment. Does he really want to go through with what he's about to to? Roxx is his darling Fishykins, after all, she who finds his tushie most attractive, and here he is about to attack her... gosh, he doesn't even know for a fact that it was really her that blasted and screamed at him before. He can't see into the smokescreen any better than she can see out of it, and for all he knows there might be a rabid Vaporeon or something in there taking pot shots at him. But his trainer wants him to go ahead with it... he isn't supposed to disobey his trainer... his conflicting emotions roll around in his brain and make his head hurt. No... no, he can't disobey his trainer. It... it won't be so bad, really, he tells himself. Roxx is a water-type. It won't hurt her that much. She'll understand.

And hey, maybe he might hit the rabid Vaporeon, too, right?

The ground beneath Roxx begins to rumble and shake, its temperature suddenly rising to the same level as and then even hotter than the blazing Harold some distance away. The clay under her fins explodes without warning, a fairly sizeable gush of magma and flame surging up from the depths of the earth and knocking a surprised Roxx high into the air. The geyser of molten rock dies down right as the Remoraid smacks back into the floor, singed and badly winded.

Everything, absolutely everything hurts as Roxx twitches on the ground. Resistance to heat and flame or no, the sudden eruption took a lot out of the little fish. Her vision--what little she can see through the dark smoke--is swimming, and her bead on Harold's location is quickly fading. Rolling back onto her belly with a great deal of effort, Roxx pushes through her pain, opens her mouth and squeezes her water sac as hard as she can. The sharp contraction forces a big jet of brackish, murky water out of her body and toward where she can only hope Harold is still standing.

Harold watches through a shimmering haze of greenish energy as the burst of cloudy water exits the smoke and rockets straight toward him. It splatters harmlessly against the protective shield, but even though none of the water reaches the fire-type he can't help but feel uneasy. He's not sure that random rabid Vaporeon can use moves like that, but Remoraid definitely can... is Roxx really trying to hurt him after all?

His suspicions are confirmed when another attack cuts straight through the smokescreen, this one an intense beam of dazzling orange heat and energy. Without the benefits of her earlier lock-on Roxx can no longer sense Harold's exact location, and so the hyper beam sails a few inches wide of its mark. Even that few inches is far, far too close for Harold's liking, however, and he makes up his mind then and there. Clearly Roxx was not as impressed with his sexy tushie as she'd claimed she was; clearly she was just leading him on so that he'd hesitate and be a sitting duck when she tried to kill him with water and hyper beams. Well, fine then. If that's the way she's going to play then he's just going to wash his hands of her. The Cyndaquil bends down and begins scratching away at the clay by his feet, gouging a small, narrow hole into the earth and slowly squeezing his way into it. He tires after working for a few feet and so curls up at the bottom of his hole. His head hurts, he's just narrowly avoided two dangerous attacks, the girl that he thought had liked him was only toying with his emotions and there's no rabid Vaporeon lurking in the smog to blame it on. Not that he really wants to deal with a rabid Vaporeon on top of the battle he'd signed on for, of course. Harold mutters unhappily to himself, alone in the dark with his miserable mood, leaving a drained and exhausted Roxx to wonder what's going on outside of the thinning smoke.

Right, now, Harold, you've put up with a lot. Take the chance to Chill for a bit, but, before you do, make sure the hole you've dug is closed up behind you. If you don't feel safe enough then you can dig a bit more, but make sure you close up behind you; we don't want Roxx flooding you out. Finish up down there with Rest.

Hmm.... Seems that's there's not much we can do in this situation. Roxx, see if you can use Surf to flood the stadium! Then we can just wait until Harold pokes his head up, and gets flooded water. Let's rest while we wait.

Round Four: Begin

Nice, cold, refreshing water would be just the ticket for soothing Roxx's burns and helping her breathe a little easier, but there's a problem--there is no water in sight. The colosseum is just as dry and barren as it was when she was first released, and she can't possibly get all of the water she needs for a surf attack just by squeezing it out of her water sac. Frustrated, she slumps down behind the dissipating smoke and simply braces herself for whatever fresh hell Harold intends to throw at her.

Which, as it turns out, is absolutely nothing. The tiring Harold is currently preoccupied with the maintenance of his hole, twisting around in the narrow space in an attempt to seal it up behind him. The going is tough, awkward and uncomfortable, made even worse by his aching head and swimming thoughts, and he tires and gives up after a few minutes. There is now a solid wall of dirt between him and the tunnel's entrance, but it isn't terribly thick or sturdy. It has, however, plunged the Cyndaquil into total, claustrophobic darkness. He shudders. He doesn't like it down here...

Grateful that no further eruptions seem to be headed her way, Roxx hopes for a bit more good luck and tries to relax instead. She closes her eyes and just stops moving, giving her put-upon body and mind a bit of a break. Harold, in his tiny, cramped space underground, follows suit--not that he feels there's much else he can do in his current situation. He wants to get out of here, he really really does, and he can't help but wonder how long his air will last. Still, panicking won't do him any good. He just needs to relax, that's it, and then his confusion will go away and he'll be able to come up with a better plan...

Then the simple relaxation turns into a full-blown trance, both Roxx and Harold forcing their bodies into a dormant state so that they can accelerate their natural healing processes. Bruises fade, wounds close, burns shrink away to nothing and the muddled mess that is Harold's brain finally settles down. The intense recovery takes its toll on both of them, however; despite the fact that they are practically asleep right now, they feel drained and exhausted.

The smoke has almost completely dissipated. Four small holes dot the ground around Roxx, and a larger hole, the result of the eruption, is just behind her. Yet another hole, closer to the north end of the arena and approximately five feet deep, hides Harold. A thin wall of earth and clay separates Harold from the outside.

Ref's Notes
-No, Surf does not create water; there are no attacks that make water magically appear out of nowhere, I believe. Generating water energy, or pulling water from an internal water sac, sure, but no instant ponds. Surf in particular requires such an external water source. As such, it failed.
-It took Harold extra energy to attempt to fill his hole in, as trying to maneuver the dirt around in his current position was awkward. He wasn't able to accomplish much more than a simple barrier between himself and the rest of the hole; filling it in completely would've taken a long time and a lot more energy.
-The smokescreen will fade away completely sometime during the next round.
-Flarginsnarf attacks first next round.

Okay... That didn't work quite as well as I had hoped, but I think we're starting to get the hang of this. Just keep using Sleep Talk until you wake up, and if you do wake up, start using Double Team for a while. Harold should be in for a big surprise by the time he surfaces.
