At the heart of a dark, secluded forest, there lies a tiny village passed over by time. Here the way of the (stereotypical anime) ninja is still very much in practice, where young children learn to kill people using nothing but their toes and the village elders haven't been seen since they decided to hide in plain sight a couple of months ago. Life here is untroubled by the bustle of urbanization outside the forest, and those rare travelers who manage to find the place are treated with no more than chilly politeness.

For the moment, though, everyone in the village (so far as you can tell; one of the elders is still AWOL) is off at a seasonal ceremony even deeper in the forest, leaving the place entirely open to wanton destruction in the form of a pokémon battle. The village itself is made up of multiple tiers of construction, with many structures situated high in the boughs of the ancient trees that make up the place. Wooden platforms and tricky, concealed bridges provide means of getting from place to place around the village. The homes themselves are small and sparse, and all locked up tight with their occupants gone--and I wouldn't go trying to force your way in, either. These are *ninja* houses, after all; who knows what sort of booby traps they've laid to prevent prying trainers from breaking in while they're away?

The trees themselves are gigantic, their lower boughs easily large enough for a human to walk out along and their leafy canopy far away overhead. The air is deathly still, dusky, and largely silent; pokémon have learned to avoid this place. However, now and then a weird cry sounds in the distance, and strange, dancing blue lights sometimes float through the murk just beyond the village's perimeter.

The battle starts out on a small platform, about two meters square, that has random boxes and baskets (empty) piled around its edges. A couple of narrow bridges lead off to house-platforms to either side. Your battle can take you anywhere you want around the village, but you'd best be sure not to slip and fall!

Special Rules: Seeing as this is a ninja village, I challenge the opponent to a ninja battle. Sneaky-sneaky like. All this means is that, rather than having commands be posted in the thread, each battler will PM their orders to the referee. The only posts in the thread should be those made by the referee (except when a pokémon faints and another one is sent out; the player who's sending out can post who they'll use to save going through the referee), and each player has seven days from when the last round went up to submit commands by PM. At the beginning of the round, the referee posts squads as normal, then both players send in their pokémon choices by PM. Once both PM's are received, the referee posts the chosen pokémon in the thread and solicits the first round of secret commands.

The air surrounding the ninja village was torpid, damp, and unnervingly quiet. The entire village was deserted, save for a few jittery birds and the aforementioned insects. Far away, in the heart of the forest, low chanting, punctuated occasionally by an unearthly shriek, could be heard over the low buzzing of insects as the residents of the village attended to some seasonal ritual. Hidden bridges creaked, leaves rustled in the wind, and if one squinted, they could have just made out the erratic blue lights dancing at the community’s edge. Overall, an eerie, even slightly creepy, scene.
Suddenly, there was a whoosh and a flash of iridescent colours as three people teleported straight into the village, courtesy of the ASB League’s Abra. Normally, they couldn’t have cared less about the sound the teleportation made – it wasn’t even that loud, after all – but in the silent village the noise might as well have been a gunshot. The bugs suddenly ceased to make a peep and the three humans glanced around, ready to fend off the toes of any toddler that came along. When no-one came, they tiptoed furtively to their respective positions.
One person, presumably the referee, walked to the far-east edge of the smallish platform. As the other two, the battlers, weighed decisions in their minds, she sat down in a cross-legged position and waited. She didn’t have to wait long; Kratos Aurion bent down to whisper something in her ear, followed by Negrek. A nod, and the trainers hurriedly took their positions at the north and south sides of the wooden stage.
The referee gave a shout, and both trainers threw their Pokeballs simultaneously: a feisty Chimchar emerged on Negrek’s side, while Rasvelg the Pandive appeared to represent Kratos’s team. The bird-like Pokemon stretched its wings and gave a battle cry that made all three humans cringe, then glared at his opponent. The little fire monkey in question chattered nervously in reply.

Still chittering nervously, Chimchar pushed off with her hind legs, eyes fixed on her opponent. At least she wouldn’t have to deal with that scary bird-ish thing for a while… It took her another split second to realize that Rasvelg was lunging towards him too, wings working at such an incredible pace that they became blue blurs, powering his flight. Oh God, oh God… There was no doubt that if the two Pokemon kept going at their current speed, they would meet with a spectacular head-on collision; with that in mind, Chimchar screeched to a halt and scrambled to change direction, but before she could do so Rasvelg was upon her. The pseudo-gryphon opened his jaws to reveal serrated teeth and expelled a hot, gusty shriek… then suddenly turned up towards the sky, raking the talons on one foot across Chimchar’s face as he did so. The small chimp whimpered; the scratches weren’t deep at all, but her heart was still hammering away in her little chest.

After a full thirty seconds of deep breathing and calming thoughts, Chimchar finally managed to get herself under control. She gave Rasvelg a frosty glare. It was time for the overgrown bird to get a taste of his own medicine. The fire monkey gave a high-pitched shriek, baring her tiny canines, before sprinting up towards her opponent at such a velocity that the air itself seemed to part as she flew past. Rasvelg hastily backwinged at a furious pace with a shocked noise, intent only on somehow avoiding what he assumed to be an incredible blow, but his efforts were fruitless. In another split second Chimchar jumped at him – then she abruptly turned a half-circle in mid-air, planted her feet – ugh! – on the Pandive’s face, and used the surface to kick off, propelling her back to his trainer. Rasvelg was forcefully thrown back and left in a wide-eyed tangle of wings and fur on the ground.

Reacting quickly, Negrek fumbled for her Chimchar’s Pokeball, calling her back to safety before the monkey could crash-land on her. After attaching the sphere back to her belt, she threw another Pokeball, this one containing her Cleffa, Yoshiya. The small fairy Pokemon gave her trainer an inquisitive look; did Chimchar get knocked out that quickly? Shrugging, she turned her attention to her opponent and squeaked a challenge. Before Rasvelg could recover enough to launch another attack, though, the referee blew her whistle and waved her arms wildly to signal the end of the first round.

Did Rasvelg actually land on the ground, or just on the platform (where I assume Yoshiya starts out)? Pretty sure it's the latter, but just checking.

Rasvelg gave Yoshiya a suspicious glare. The Cleffa looked anything but daunting, standing even shorter than his previous opponent. Still, babies could be fickle. Shrugging and deciding that he was better safe than sorry, the Pandive gave his wings two quick flicks, showering the air in front of him with soft white feathers. Then, using his talons, he poked and sculpted the feathers until it resembled a bird-gryphon thing. It wasn’t his best work, Rasvelg reflected, but it would have to do. Quickly, before the mass of feathers fell apart again, he jabbed a talon in the Substitute’s side and let a portion of his life force flow into the structure.

While Rasvelg put his artistic abilities to the test, Yoshiya sighed and looked on in disdain. There was no way he could cling onto the gryphon now. Instead, he clapped his incredibly stubby hands together and drew as much static from the atmosphere as he could, creating a white-yellow glow in front of the little normal-type’s chest. When it had reached an adequate size – the Cleffa still had trouble controlling attacks not of his own element – Yoshiya jerked his arms back and let the unstable electricity burst outwards in a crackling wave. Just before the attack hit, Rasvelg’s Substitute jumped in front of its creator, wings spread wide to take as much of the electricity as it could. The real water-gryphon backed away slightly as ribbons of pure energy wrapped around the structure, burning some areas black. It was tougher than Yoshiya gave it credit for, though: even though it was shuddering from the sheer amount of electricity in its feathery system, it managed to hold itself together and pull back into a jerky flight.

Despite the fact that Rasvelg was quite unnerved by the Shock Wave, he started to flap his wings to gain altitude. His Substitute ensured that he wouldn’t be hit in the near future, at least. When the water gryphon was at level with the treetops with his half-fried double desperately chopping the air behind him, he pulled his arms close to his body and dove down. Suddenly, he flashed out a wing, pulling him into a spiral – on the platform, Yoshiya flinched – then he banked to one side and did a flip, front talons clashing together as he did so. After a few more fancy maneuvers in the air, Rasvelg pulled into a vertical nosedive, turning slow spirals as he fell perpendicular to the wooden platform below. His opponent watched in awe. At the last second he angled his wings to pull himself out of the high-speed drop, strafing dangerously close to the raised arena for a moment before landing. He was slightly out of breath, but man, was that exciting! Adrenaline rushed through his body, with it a profound confidence.

Yoshiya couldn’t help but feel a bit disappointed as Rasvelg’s spectacular aerial performance drew to a close. Shrugging to himself, he reached into an alternate dimension with his mind and began rummaging around for something around a foot tall – ah, there. The air in front of Yoshiya rippled as something resembling a large golf ball rolled out of nowhere. He grimaced; it looked nothing like a Cleffa at the moment. The right amount of pounding would fix that, though. Twenty smacks later, the golf ball had been slightly compressed and had the barest hints of two horns, stubby arms, and stumpy legs. Each smack contained the slightest hint of Yoshiya’s life energy, though, and by the time the sculpture was finished, it was fully animate.

Without missing a beat, Yoshiya once again reached out with his limited psychic powers, but this time his target was none other than Rasvelg himself. However, his Substitute got in the way of the baby fairy’s attack again. Grumbling, he picked the structure up and slammed it against the platform; white feathers flew in every direction as the pseudo-gryphon exploded on the impact.

If Rasvelg was bothered by the disappearance of his Substitute, he certainly didn’t show it. He dug his talons into the wooden platform and brought his wings back, then flapped them with astounding speed and power. The resulting wind was so powerful that it actually picked Yoshiya up and flung him into the trees beyond the platform, though his own Substitute was apparently made of some dense material because it was merely pushed back a few feet. The flying Cleffa, who was crying in fear and shock, abruptly smashed into a thick branch; reacting quickly, he latched onto it and clung for dear life, still sobbing. Meanwhile, the golf ball-Cleffa had crossed a bridge to another smaller platform underneath the tree and was jumping up and down with one stubby arm raised in a comical attempt to reach its master.

Though Räsvelg was undeniably the speedier of the two Pokemon, he had the misfortune of having the squint and aim carefully before he could execute his attack. Yoshiya, on the other hand, was bound by no such restrictions; he let out one last plaintive wail before scooting to the opposite side of the thick branch. Now, just how was he meant to fire off a Swift with twenty pounds of wood in front of his face…?

While the baby fairy hesitated, the blue shorebird down below took a deep breath, chest expanding, before giving his water sac a powerful squeeze, causing a thin, high-pressure jet of unyielding water to shoot from his jaws. Because of the distance it had to travel, the impressive water attack’s strength had diminished by the time it reached the branch Yoshiya was clinging on, and even then it was destined to never hit its target. Registering the danger its master was in, Yoshiya’s substitute gave an incredible leap that was as remarkable as it was impossible, throwing itself in the way of the Hydro Pump. The force of the attack nearly ripped a hole through the dimpled white structure; it just managed to hold itself together, but it seemed that its job was done anyway, at least for now. The substitute sailed through the air, over Yoshiya’s branch, and into the forest beyond, where it landed with a faint plop.

Yoshiya sniffed at the disappearance of his guardian, but concentrated an orb of energy in his mouth without complaints. Little arms shivering with the effort, he pulled his head above the branch and let the energy spray out, the small pellets morphing into star-shaped razors as they flew along. A great many swerved into the trees and disappeared, but those that did reach Räsvelg cut several shallow wounds in his flanks and shoulders. He growled in irritation.

With the substitute out of the way, there was nothing to prevent Räsvelg from shooting Yoshiya off of his perch. As the Cleffa ducked behind the branch with a whimper, Räsvelg took aim, breathed in, and fired off another Hydro Pump. This time, the attack hit its mark – well, at least close to it. The branch shielded Yoshiya from the brunt of the blow, but it could do nothing to prevent the stinging spray from bombarding the little fairy. Thick as the bough was, even it couldn’t stand up to the sheer force of the stream of water, and it gave a single crack. Panicked, Yoshiya let go of the branch and tumbled down into the undergrowth below with an alarmed cry, crashing past several fronds before landing on a particularly thick weave of branches that could hold his weight. The platform was tantalizingly close, but he didn’t dare jump across to it, terrified that he’d plummet all the way to the forest floor. Instead, he drew electricity from the humid atmosphere around his body and pushed it outwards in a relatively weak wave, but there were so many ferns and tree trunks in the Shock Wave’s way that by the time it reached Räsvelg, he felt only a stinging tingle.

By now it was glaringly obvious that there was no way the gryphon-like Pokemon could target his opponent, so instead he pulled up into the air again in preparation for another Swords Dance. He dove down, twisting, turning, and looping-the-loop, clashing his front talons together all the while to serve as a beat. Hearing the wind whistle and claws collide, Yoshiya deduced that his opponent was putting on another air show, and he clapped and cheered with fervent zeal, but his meek baby voice had no hope of reaching Räsvelg’s ears through the insistent buzzing of bugs.

Yoshiya’s barely-alive Substitute has tumbled into the forest, and will show up again sometime in round five. Räsvelg is still on the main platform, while Yoshiya is sitting on a weave of branches below the branch he was clinging on before, at level with a platform in front of him.

Final notes
Hydro Pump’s damage was diminished by distance, and thus was not enough to destroy the Substitute.
It did, however, throw it into the forest, where it took a bit more damage, though it was just short of destroying it.
Likewise, Swift and Shock Wave were both diminished by distance.
The second Hydro Pump didn’t hit Yoshiya directly, though it still managed to deal some damage.
Encore missed.

Erm, how did two hydro pumps and a swords dance take less energy than swift, shock wave, and encore?

(And love of Christ, Yoshiya, did you forget you can float?)

Ermwhat. Oops. I forgot to take off the energy for the 2nd Hydro Pump; that's been fixed now. Why does it feel like I'm always missing something in my reffings

(Jesus Beams are banned by default in this battle because I said so >:()

(Yoshiya's still too little for Jesus Beams anyway; that's why he needs to evolve >>

But cleffa are consentually hovering pokémon (it's in the flying/hovering pokémon part of the rules), which means that they can float if they want. I didn't tell him to do so explicitly, so it's no big deal, though; just a little exasperated by his "oh no I shall fall" thing.)

(Evolve? Just slap the Jesus Beam sticker on his forehead and he's ready to go.)

...Seriously? I don't recall the Cleffa lines having any form of flight transportation - oh, there I go again, having the games screw up my ASB logic. I'll note that for later reffings - and I should read the list in detail >.> Thanks for the heads up anyway.

Terrain: The Ninja Village

Yoshiya sat still and strained his ears, listening for the whistling of the wind. Not two seconds later, a whoosh was heard, followed by another, and many more after that; Räsvelg must’ve taken to the air. Though he was unsure whether this spelled an attack or not, the Cleffa assumed a defensive position anyway, digging his tiny, stubby feet as best as he could among the branches and tensing his entire body.

A few moments later, Räsvelg’s head became visible in a gap between the masses of leaves; upon seeing his petite opponent, he grinned, and Yoshiya shivered inwardly. The pseudo-gryphon thrust his shoulders through the gap, the flimsy twigs allowing him to pass through easily. He then proceeded to fold his wings, tipping him into a dive that brought his pseudo-beak straight into the baby fairy’s stomach. A clawed hand flashed out, opening two wounds in Yoshiya’s side in addition to the swiftly-forming bruise on his stomach, before Räsvelg motioned to leave, but he wasn’t fast enough. The Cleffa growled as he rapidly gathered all the pain from the attack into one arm, which he swung with astounding force into Räsvelg’s back. The Pandive screeched in agony. How Yoshiya had managed to store so much power into his stout limb was beyond him; the spot of impact radiated pain, sending waves of it up and down his spine.

The impressive attack didn’t come without a cost, though. As Yoshiya stepped back, little chest puffed out in pride, he discovered with a twinge of discontentment that he was panting with fatigue. Räsvelg, however, was still rather chipper – though he certainly felt less energetic than he had in the beginning of the battle, he had more than enough energy to launch himself into the air once more. He really didn’t want to be on the receiving end of another blow like that. When he had achieved a decent height, he looked down; Yoshiya was standing there like a tree stump, gazing up at him with rapt attention. He gave a sigh and decided to hang around in the air for several more moments, but when it became clear that the Cleffa wasn’t planning to do anything, he folded his wings and dove down once more. Yoshiya yelled as the attack made contact, trying to wipe away the blood that was dripping from a new wound on his stomach with his short limbs but failing quite miserably. He bit his lip and his face scrunched up comically in anger before he punched Räsvelg once again with spectacular force, this time between the shoulder blades. Strangely though, the shorebird didn’t feel anything save for the merest tingle, and he tweeted in surprise. Yoshiya stepped back with a furious pout written all over his features.

Even though Räsvelg had the nagging suspicion that any more attacks would yield the same faint tingle, he obeyed his orders without question and concentrated his energy in a faint, shimmering green barrier in front of him. The shorebird then crouched down, his shoulder against the shield, to reinforce it, though he was uncomfortably aware of how the branches swayed with his every movement.

Yoshiya, however, was completely oblivious to the Protect. Focusing hard, the little fairy reached out with his limited mental powers and attempted to latch onto Räsvelg’s, hoping to leech some of that delicious strength from him. ‘Attempted’ was the key word; the shield Räsvelg was crouched behind rejected the sneaky tendril of energy, and Yoshiya, obviously not expecting that, cried out in indignation and lost his focus. As he was jolted back into reality, a wave of tiredness swept through him, forcing him to sit down.

There was a rustle in the undergrowth as a small, dimpled, familiar structure poked its head out of the leaves next to Yoshiya. Both battlers stared at it incredulously. Oblivious to the intent looks, the white golf ball-thing that was Yoshiya’s substitute disappeared back beneath the leaves before jumping back up, grasping the branch its creator was sitting on with stubby hands and pulling itself up to stand beside its master. The baby fairy edged away, nervously eying his own creation: it was in a sorry state, battered, soaked, and punched through with several small holes.

Räsvelg shrugged and flexed his sore wings. He was explicitly told to carry out the same commands, substitute or no. He tilted his head up, cheeks bulging slightly as water was pumped into his mouth. A gurgling sound emanated from the pseudo-gryphon’s throat while Yoshiya peered at him with deep suspicion. Ignoring his opponent completely, Räsvelg sealed his lips firmly so not a drop of liquid dribbled from his jaws before craning his neck so his snout pointed to his plumy tail. As he inhaled deeply through his nose, a faint, olive-green aura started to flicker around his talons; Yoshiya barely had time to register the dangerous glow before Räsvelg shot a slender but powerful stream of water from his mouth. It sloshed against the branch opposite to the battlers, the bark turning dark with water within seconds even as the seventy-pound bird rocketed towards his opponent with the help of the liquid jet, talons stretched and ready to rip and tear.

Panicking, Yoshiya siphoned some of his own energy into the air around him, quickly solidifying it into a flickering green dome. It was rendered obsolete, however, when his substitute threw itself in front of him, unable to register the newly-raised Protect. Räsvelg had absolutely no trouble tearing apart the structure, weakened as it was; once his work was done, he flashed out a wing to execute a swift u-turn and flapped back through the gap in the trees. Yoshiya watched on in dismay, his barrier fizzling away now that it was unneeded, and several moments later the sound of a Pokeball minimizing told him that Räsvelg had been returned to the safely of the white-and-red sphere. The Cleffa pouted, furious at himself for acting so rashly.

Back on the main platform, Kratos was attaching Räsvelg’s Pokeball back onto his belt. When the task was done, he took another one without a moment’s hesitation and threw it, a Sneasel materializing on the wooden stage in the usual burst of red light. Richter immediately started hopping about on the platform, bursting with energy and craving battle.

Richter gazed around at his immediate surroundings, a scowl slowly working upon his face when there was no small, pinkish creature to be seen. Nothing but trees, platforms, trees, baskets, and trees. His trainer had given him no inkling about the whereabouts of his opponent, either. Nonetheless, the Sneasel was ready to take a stab in the dark. He cupped his hands around his mouth, spun around to face an utterly random direction, and started to spew insults. By complete and utter luck, Richter’s guess wasn’t too far off, and even luckier was the fact that some of the insults actually managed to push through the droning of insects to reach Yoshiya’s ears with their sounds still intact. Pff, fail… you suck, man… can’t even take out little Räsvelg… strength is as puny as your figure… The baby fairy felt a twinge of annoyance, then, remembering his trainer’s orders, scrunched his face up and covered his ears. Richter’s words immediately became incoherent, and the brief surfacing of anger faded away.

Richter finally fell silent, to Yoshiya’s relief. With a grin he unplugged his ears, grateful to be able to concentrate without obscene noises tainting the air, and thought back to Räsvelg’s final attack. He already had an internal water store, so the Aqua Jet portion couldn’t be too difficult. The Cleffa squirted all the liquid from his little water sac into his mouth – not an impressive amount, but hopefully enough. Then, he morphed pure energy around his hands into a tiny vortex, each sucking in an insect or two. The white aura immediately turned an olive green, and Yoshiya spat out the water in his mouth in a thin, powerful stream. If he could scream in fear and spit water at the same time, he would’ve, but unfortunately he was reduced with gurgling crazily as he jerked his body every which way, desperately trying to get the Aqua Jet under control. Foliage whipped at his back as he burst out of the leafy chamber he had previously been imprisoned in, and Richter’s eyelids peeled back so far that the whites were showing when he caught sight of the tiny, pale-pinkish meteor hurling towards him.

There was no way he could avoid the tremendously quick attack, though, and the Sneasel could only squeeze his eyes shut before Yoshiya barreled into his stomach, sending him to a location on the platform two feet away amidst a shower of water droplets. Yoshiya followed suit with a small squeak, then punched his opponent twice with bug-energy imbued fists and scampered back to his trainer as fast as his stubby legs would carry him, while Richter lay there, groaning. Negrek recalled her dead-tired Pokemon in a beam of red light before the Sneasel could recover. The referee blew her whistle, eliciting a glare from the downed Pokemon, and Negrek threw another Pokeball to reveal a familiar Pokemon: Chimchar.
