Arena: The Battledome

The Battledome is the place to go for combat in Neopia, a gigantic arena of metal and concrete, the most high-tech building this side of Virtupets. It's relatively simple in it's normal state; a 100-foot in diameter steel arena of circular shape, with a large pond in the centre for those bound to water.

But the Battledome will change it's appearance and location every round, and is completely random what it becomes. The choices and changes are these:

Stone Dome: Located in the Haunted Woods, the Stone Dome is open to the sky, and surrounded by ancient trees and a starry sky, the moon covered by clouds. The pond has become a murky black and filled with weeds. This arena grants a 3% boost to all Dark- and Ghost-type attacks, and a 2% Energy decrease for the same.

Ice Arena: Located on Terror Mountain, the Ice Arena is completely enclosed in a glittering layer of ice so cold that is cannot be melted. The pond has frozen over, and the air is chilled to the negatives. This arena grants a 3% boost to Ice attacks and a 2% energy reduction to the same.

Island Arena: Located on Mystery Island, the Island Arena isn't much more than a cleared-out section of jungle, the floor made of dirt and grass rather than metal. The pond is a pure sparkling blue here. This arena grants a 3% boost to Grass- and Bug-type attacks and a 2% energy reduction to the same.

Space Arena: Located in the Virtupets Space Station, the Space Arena is completely clear, allowing the battlers to see the stars around them, the moon, and Neopia below. Gazing out at the world below them will cause the Pokemon to become Intimidated as per the Ability.

Water Arena: Located in Maraqua under the sea, the Water Arena is, as it's name would suggest, completely filled with water. All non water-breathers will find their heads (or whatever they use to breath) surrounded by a magical bubble that allows them to breath. This arena makes all Fire Attacks completely useless and cuts all non-swimmer's speed by 2.

Tyrannian Arena: Located in the prehistoric Tyrannia, the Tyrannian Arena is a primitively-cut stone on a large plateau. This arena has a hazard; a massive Pterodactyl has a 25% chance of appearing on the second action of the round and attacking both battlers for 5% untyped damage. This Arena also grants a 3% increase to Rock attacks, and a 2% energy reduction to the same.

Battledome: The arena described at the top; has no special benefits.

Body Mod: Full Metal

Cookie was born quite different from most of her kind; She lacked the Poison type common to the Budew line, and instead was part Steel. This was attributed to the fact that there were Mawile a few generations back in her family tree. She lacks a few things that most of her kind have; the Poison type, of course, a few poison attacks, and the Poison Point ability. Instead she can use steel attacks and has the ability 'Battle Armour'.

Effects: Cookie is a Steel/Grass type. Ability changed to Battle Armour. - Sludge Bomb + Iron Head.

“Welcome, ladies, gentleman, thems, and its!” Although the referee has just opened its mouth for the introductions, the booming announcer’s voice is completely different. “Here, in the famous Neopian Battledome, is the thirteen thousand six hundred eighteenth battle this year! But today, our esteemed Battledome is used for a different purpose: Anime-Style Battling!”

The referee displays great discomfort at the applause, as seen clearly in the gigantic middle screen. This is a massive crowd, and when together they can be far louder than any listeners want to be. The steel dome seems to amplify the noise, and it silently curses the fact that the massive concrete circle serving as the main battleground is so boring that there must be cameras on the referee instead. The most interesting thing about the arena is the large pool of water in the centre (which is dumb; it should be off to the side, in the referee’s opinion, because this means most of the battles won’t take place in the middle), and even that is no more interesting than a puddle of spilled juice. Finally, the cameras turn to the thousands of people in the audience instead, focusing mainly on the louder sections; this only increases the noise, as people compete for their chance to appear onscreen.

Nothing, however, can compete with the enhanced voice of the announcer. The nervousness turns into impatience as the deafening voice continues for a few minutes, describing the history of something or another and unimportant things about ASB. Then, finally, the announcer gets to the good part.

“She is a referee and pokémon approver. She has won seven battles since the Great Asber Fire. She is the winner of last year’s Most Improved Battler award, and was nominee for the ASBer of the Year and Best Battler awards. Give it up for the great Full Metal Cookies!”

One gate slowly opens, and Full Metal Cookies appears out of the shadows dramatically, as seen on a giant screen on her side. She grins and waves – at the slightly wrong angle, as she’s looking at the small but dedicated group of FMC fans instead of the camera – and stops in a painted box. The crowd applauds and cheers, and a few loud, high-pitched screams pierce the air. Full Metal Cookies hides her wince admirably.

“And here we have a new, untested trainer, only now revealing himself to the world. Who is this daring challenger standing up to an experienced battler? Is he new, or does he carry with him the burden of hidden skills and experience? Today, we will finally find out the truth behind this mysterious trainer. Give it up for SethGrey!”

Opposite Full Metal Cookies, another large gate rises into the tunnel’s ceiling. On another screen, SethGrey strolls out of the shadowed tunnel, smiling and waving at the camera. In some sections, the applause is more polite than anything, because it is relatively unknown compared to Full Metal Cookies. But it intends to change that, and there are always those in the crowd hoping to find a new champion to support.

A giant spinning dubloon appears on the main screen, and the camera follows it up almost to the ceiling, and back down until it clatters on the floor. The referee gives the screen an incredulous stare, wondering who flipped the coin, but announces the battle order anyway. “First is”—it winces at the volume, and glares at the speakers. It continues after a pause (some suspect it put in earplugs during the wait; as the main screen has gone blank, no one can tell). Full Metal Cookies will send out her pokémon first, SethGrey sends out its pokémon and orders attacks, and then Full Metal Cookies counters with her own orders. All of this appears on the screen, then a shatter effect makes the title card disappear. The camera instead follows the path of a pokéball spinning as it flies through the air. The pokéball lands on the ground and splits open, white light spilling out. A prinplup now becomes the focus of the screen, with the pokéball flying back to Full Metal Cookies’s hand, unnoticed. The prinplup stands proudly and invites the applause, being too good for waving or bowing to any fans.

Just before the noise dies down, the screen whooshes to another pokéball hurtling through the air. This one, too, crashes to the ground, and splits open. The glowing form of what might be a strangely-shaped mushroom appears. The light fades, and a ralts peers up at the prinplup from under his cap. He ignores the audience as best he can.

On the screens displaying the trainers, the trainer and pokémon stats appear. The 100% health and energy for both pokémon are the most noticeable thing after the trainers’ faces, and below that, in smaller text, is their status (“OK” for both, which is terribly undescriptive).

Ralts’s red horns glitter strangely. He can quite suddenly sense Jinkosen’s feelings, more strongly than before. There’s a latent power residing deep in Jinkosen’s body, waiting for a time of great need. A low thrum comes from within Ralts’s own mind, identical to the one he senses within Jinkosen. Even though he realises it won’t be particularly useful, it’s reassuring to have some backup power lying dormant within him, and he feels more confident that he can take the prinplup on as equals. The status display changes, although most don’t notice; “Ability: Trace” is replaced with “Ability: Torrent”.

SethGrey, having managed to get its microphone working before the crowd went silent, shouts its orders at Ralts in hopes that he can hear it. The yelling, though, might be an overreaction caused by nervousness—SethGrey speaks more quickly than usual, and it isn’t entirely certain of its victory. Ralts bows his head to show he understands. Full Metal Cookies simply states her rather simple orders, knowing that the speakers will carry her voice throughout the stadium. Jinkosen doesn’t respond, but he doesn’t need to.

Annoyingly, the announcer gets to it before the referee.

“Let the battle begin!”

.: Actions :.

Jinkosen begins by vomiting out a large, glowing blob of water, much to Ralts’s disgust. Instead of splashing everywhere upon landing, though, the water forms into a doll shaped much like a prinplup, even gaining colour, although it’s slightly smaller than Jinkosen. Although Ralts had been hoping for a chance to put Jinkosen to sleep, he doesn’t entirely mind his alternative. He shuffles quickly, away from the lake and making a quarter-circle with the substitute at the centre, increasing in speed until his form blurs. Several afterimages follow, and when he stops, three ralts stand a few metres away from each other.

Although Jinkosen can’t help but note that Ralts’s clones are far more convincing than his own, he reassures himself with the fact that substitutes can do more than just exist. He gives Ralts a look of contempt, draws himself up, and gathers energy into his mouth. A red and blue beam, both twirling around each other, shoot through the middle ralts—ah, and there Ralts and his clones prove him wrong—and weakly fizzle out at the metal wall.

The two remaining ralts just stand there, unflinching, and their eyes glow white. Jinkosen only sees twin lights from beneath each ralts’s cap, and pats his substitute in anticipation for an attack that never comes. Or so he thinks, anyway; he doesn’t see what Ralts does. Ralts finds himself caught up in flashes of the future, with an unsuspecting prinplup throwing another bi-coloured beam, or the substitute breaking, or a prinplup running, or Jinkosen standing, head tilted, listening to orders, or—there. Ralts gathers energy, throws it, sees a brilliant white ball of light flying—and he’s back in the present, eyes normal again. It feels as though he’s thrown an attack directly into the future, but he knows it’s just a delayed attack that Jinkosen won’t be able to dodge. Were his skills enough? That’s what it all depends on.

As he ponders this, another glowing orb grows in Jinkosen’s beak. Blue and red lights dance around each other, a low hum buzzing in Jinkosen’s ears. Then the lights shoot out, still dancing around each other, twirling and buzzing. The signal beam passes unhindered through a ralts and once again strikes the battledome walls harmlessly. Jinkosen gapes, then yells a curse. He missed? How could that happen!? Someone like him, a noble prinplup, and his attack missed because of the cheating bastard’s stupid clones!?

Ralts tilts his head back to lift his cap, revealing his red eyes. He glares coolly at Jinkosen, a little smirk of victory playing about his mouth, and points one hand lazily in Jinkosen’s direction. The substitute doll steps in front of Jinkosen protectively, and Ralts shrugs, not caring. Now, how shall he do this? It won’t make a difference, but his trainer didn’t specify. He decides it would be more fun to see the doll bounce around, so that’s what he does. Psychic tendrils wrap around the substitute, unseen, and Ralts jerks his hand up. The substitute flies up at his command, and down when Ralts strikes his hand down in a cutting motion. The potentially devastating crash isn’t the end of it, though; Ralts hurls the substitute into the Battledome’s wall. Several large cracks run down the substitute’s head and back, but it stoically vanishes and reappears by Jinkosen’s side.

The crowd gasps as five large eyes open up in the floor, beneath the trainers, referee, and pokémon, bulging and bloodshot. Wisps of black smoke appear around their feet, then hundreds of long black arms shoot out and wrap around each person or pokémon. Then, before the audience’s very eyes, the five spark with blue electricity and disintegrate. The hands dive back into the eyeball. With more blue sparks, the floor closes, leaving only barely-noticeable scratches on the floor as a sign there was ever anyone there.
