My one true goal as a writer or something-approaching-a-game-developer is to be able to pull off all sorts of wonderful little pointless flourishes like that.

Yeah!!! Something that's always gotten me about the Ace Attorney series, and Ghost Trick as well, is that they're just delightful games. I think there's a real difference between games that are good and enjoyable and those that are actually delightful, and somehow Ace Attorney keeps delivering on the delight. It's all the little details that make you smile, I think--little call-backs, bits of humor, and things like that that are technically superfluous but add an extra layer of fun. It shows so much careful attention, and it's such a lovely feeling when you think, "You know, it would be cool if they..." and they totally do, or when they completely surprise you, but the surprise feels perfectly right for the characters and setting and you almost can't imagine you didn't see it coming.

...anyway basically that's something I've actually thought about a lot and would love to emulate in my own work, too, definitely. Even if I don't work in particularly lighthearted genres, usually. :P

Ah, okay. I generally don't follow Nintendo news that closely. And yeah, at least they clearly still have interest in the franchise and think there's a market for that sort of game... Of course, I continue to be super-apprehensive that a sequel would just screw up everything that made the first game great anyway, but pine for a sequel anyway...

It's going to be even more interesting because they have to have battle work in both two-screen mode when the console's hooked up to the TV and one-screen when you have just the game pad. I suppose you could still do the split-screen interface with it hooked up to the TV, except now the TV is the "top screen" and you're mostly working with the game pad? Would be weird to be sitting at the TV but mostly staring at the little screen in your hands, though. At least they have a working one-screen version from when they did that iPad release.

I'm totally going to visit Shibuya and take all the fagirl photos when I'm in Japan next month. :P

Oh yeah, I must have skipped that post! Or at least I have absolutely no recollection of it. Which given that it was posted over two years ago oh God I put off finishing that game way too long is also entirely possible.

Overall, I enjoyed the game, although I really wasn't feeling either Case 2 or Case 3, which is why it took me so long to get through. In general those two felt super egregiously long to me? Case 3 in particular, lord I thought that one was never going to end. I also wasn't as big of a fan of most of the new characters introduced there in the middle. I really, really disliked Ray, and although kid!Ray was pretty innocuous I also didn't find him terribly interesting. Likewise Edgeworth's dad; he's a nice enough guy, serious but with some quirks, but I didn't find him tremendously, like, compelling to work with.

Case 4 was definitely a great payoff, though. I felt proud of myself for noticing (SPOILER) the bit about the kids in Case 3 and figuring that they were Simon/Knightley and that the father who up and fucking ditched his kid was going to be significant. Buuuut I had kind of misled myself based on what I knew about Butterfree liking in the game; I thought with Simon/Knightley we were looking at a case of epic bros and not (SPOILER) tragically one-sided epic bros, even though in retrospect I should have been expecting that. :P I also latched onto the whole thing with body doubles going on and thought (SPOILER) something must have been up with Knightley--that he wasn't actually dead, especially because Simon kept going on about how Knightley would never have murdered someone just to gain power. And there was that one security camera shot of him visiting Simon with that big covered cage, and I thought some kind of switch could have happened there. I guess wrt the first point the punchline was that Knightley was actually kind of a Bad Dude, but to me it felt like there was some stuff left unexplored there. Or maybe I'm just gettin' mad at red herrings. But in general I would have loved to see more done with Knightley. Not all that possible given that he spent most of the game(SPOILER) , you know, dead, but still.

So yeah. I found the middle part of the game a bit of a slog, but everything really came together in the last case. As it always does in Ace Attorney, but. Especially so here.

Also, I did love the Knightley objection-neigh, but I think my favorite little detail was (SPOILER) Simon's villain pose where he casually reclined on a column of trained animals.

It is? Awesome! I guess I didn't hear about it because they learned their lesson after the iPad rerelease and didn't make a huge deal out of it this time. I'm definitely in favor of a rerelease so new players can experience the game and maybe there will be a slightly-less-tiny audience for my PMD/TWEWY crossover, but come on, Squeenix. Sounds like a pretty standard "third version," then. Which has always been "wouldn't bother getting the first games if this had been available." I would say they tricked me into buying Sun, since after B2W2 and Gen VI I was thinking they might not do "enhanced" versions anymore... but let's be real, I wouldn't have been able to resist getting it even if I had known. Damn you Nintendooooo...

Yeah, RPGmaker games would be a pretty big pain. I figure I'll try surskitty's hack, then, and Vega sounds like a good additional choice. There's also Prism, if I'm remembering the name right? The other one Nintendo went after? I've heard good things about that one as well. Should be plenty to keep me busy.

Ooops, I meant AAI2, ahaha. I assure you you're way more up on the Ace Attorney franchise than me, heh. Which, I don't remember if I ever asked you what you thought of that game in the end? Seeing as I've now actually played all of it, thanks to Butterfree.

    Okay, noted!

I ended up taking a pretty great cooking class! It covered mango stick rice, which is the only dish I'll be consuming from now on...

How's Ultra Moon? I've been hearing the games are pretty similar to the originals up until the third island or so and the implementation of Rainbow Rocket was disappointing (whyyyyy I believed in yoooouuuu), but overall I think people have enjoyed it? I'll probably pick it up one way or another when I get home because I'm a sucker, but. And I hope you enjoy Spirit of Justice! I'm so behind on all the AA games, ugh.

I never actually finished Uranium, haha. Can't remember whether I did the final gym or stopped before the final tournament, but the game file's on my other computer anyway, so it's moot, really. I've never actually heard of Altair! Vega, though, that one's at least vaguely on my radar. I had no idea it was a sequel to another game, though I imagine it stands just fine on its own anyway. I'll put those two on my list to check out, although I can't abide grinding so I don't know how I'll do with them, haha. Gaia I'm vaguely aware of, too, probably worth looking into. Unfortunately with a lot of fangames (like most of the ones on Relic Castle for example) they're Windows-only and I don't feel like mucking about with Wine or something just to run them, so I'll have to wait until I get home to give them a shot. Fortunately there are plenty of hacks out there that work fine with my Linux-ported emulators! (Although, funny story, I was playing through AAI3 with Butterfree and got stuck at one point because it turns out the Linux version of DesMuMe doesn't properly implement the DS mic properly, so I couldn't do one of the damn puzzles where you're supposed to blow into the mic? Good times.)

btw, I'm planning to send you a birthday present (that will hopefully be closer to almost on time for once), and I'm wondering whether I should use your home address for that, or the one I've been sending postcards to?

Hope you had a great Christmas and new year! And got to enjoy playing some great games!

I think it worked fine as an ending, whether or not you decide to eventually explore more with that particular set of characters. Now that you mention it, I think maybe your old post about IF did mention some kind of PMD-style story? It's been a long time, heh, it's cool to see you making progress with those kinds of games!

I understand having difficulty estimating length too, haha... "This chapter only has four scenes in it, how is it 10,000 words??" But whatever length it ends up being, I'm sure I'll enjoy reading it!

Haha, probably a good idea to try completing older/shorter things before tackling BoTW, for sure. Hope you get that Switch, then; I know I'll have to pick one up eventually, because Pokémon. What games are you working on right now? Anything good?

Yeah, I'm hoping it's just the charging cable gone bad, but haven't really had the opportunity to test that, so it's just gonna be a brick I have to haul around for the next few months, I guess. And I've been pretty boring, emulator-wise; just replaying XD for research and Platinum, because I've actually never played it. Trying to 100% XD, pretty much have to just clear Orre Colosseum at this point. Then I'll probably go back to Colosseum-Colosseum and play through that again. Thinking about trying some hacks/fangames after that, so let me know if you have any recs!

For Thailand, I'm most interested in visiting some temples, the jungle, and doing some hiking! I'm also interested in taking a cooking class or two. I would really like to spend a week or so on one, since I'm planning to kind of hang out and focus on logistics/planning rather than sightseeing for a bit, so I'll have the time. All the ones I've found so far are half-day affairs catering to short-term travelers, though.

Oh? The end of the adventure kind of hinted at a larger adventure with the guy who got his arm burned, so I thought that might be what you were working on. Is the big adventure set in Arilterra?

Ah, gotcha. It sounds like that story grew on you quite a bit... it was originally just going to be a little one-shot, yeah? But, anyway, it's awesome that you got some good progress in on it. Do you have any plans to polish up and publish that glitch story you had me look at a while ago, too?

Nice, hope you get a chance to really relax, then! And play those video games, too; I caved and brought my 3DS along with me, but now it won't charge, so I haven't actually gotten any real use out of it. Just emulators on my laptop keeping me company. Have you got a Switch? If BoTW is one of those games in your backlog I think you might need quite a bit of time to play through it, heh.

I'm in Thailand now; just got here after about two days' traveling up from New Zealand. And no, I don't expect to go home until April or so; I video called my parents for Thanksgiving and am hoping to do so for Christmas as well, that's pretty much it. I may see my family in March because my dad's talking about taking a trip to Hawai'i, with my brother possibly joining, but he's already left me hanging twice by saying he'll come visit one place or another and then backing out last minute, so I'm not going to expect anything there. I'll be in Thailand through January; not sure that there'll be much of anything going on for Christmas here, but I'll try to schedule something special for the day regardless.

Hey, congrats on AO's tenth anniversary! It's wild that the site's been up that long. And nice job getting a bunch of content ready to go for the anniversary, too! I enjoyed playing the little text adventure. Looking forward to the longer version whenever you happen to finish it... and Holding Out for a Hero, of course! It's super exciting that you managed to get that one all written out.

Anyway, seems like you've got a lot of irons in the fire. How's life?

Ooh, wow! It's too bad you didn't find the original Pikachu, but hopefully that means she went to a loving home somewhere. It's fantastic that they apparently keep turning out batches of these with the same inaccuracies... maybe it's like a brand thing? Like there are different bootleg pokémon manufacturers, but you know if you get an espeon with the sweet rings it comes from this one particular company? idk. The seated pose on neo-Pikachu looks really cute!

Congrats on making it to the parade! We got kinda close a couple years, but it's nice to hear that you finally pulled it off. I'd love to see pictures if you want to post them!

And no problem, glad to hear they made it okay. I'm in Peru now, should eventually be sending another batch of cards from here, heh.
