tcod Telegram Chat (chat link fixed as of 18/11)
 

Hi guys! I am taking increasingly-long absences from this forum lately - not for any real reason, I just keep forgetting to check in - and I thought that it's kind of a shame because then I rarely get to catch up with any of you guys. So I thought maybe a group chat would be a good idea (kind of like #tcod, but a bit easier and more accessible). I've set up a group chat on Telegram that anyone from tcod is welcome to join!

I've used Telegram because:

• it's available on desktop (windows, OSX, Linux), Mobile (iOS, Android, Windows Phone), and there's also a web version if you don't feel like installing anything. You can also be logged in on as many things as you want and telegram syncs all your chats, which is nice.
• it's super free and has no ads
• it's really good at sending photos, videos, links, files, etc. (I actually use it to quickly send photos from my phone to my computer)
• you only need a phone number to set up (which can't be seen by other people unless you give them your phone number and they save it as a contact in their phone or vice versa). If you don't want to use your phone number, apparently if you're in the US you can get a Google Voice number for free and that'll work, but I haven't tried it.
• MD and I have been using it for like 2 years and have zero complaints with it. It's just a good little free messaging app.

So feel free to come and say hi! MD and I will be moderators for now and we'll see how it goes. It's not quite like IRC where if you leave the chat window you leave the chat room - it's more like facebook messenger where you're kind of just in a group all the time. However you can leave and re-enter the group so long as you have the invite link, which I'll probably leave up here in this post - I can revoke it if we have problems with spam. You can also turn off notifications if you want.

edit: also, when you set up telegram, if you use your first and last name, that's what you'll appear in the chat as. I would forego making a telegram username and just sign up as your tcod username for now. if you make a telegram username, anyone on telegram can search your username and send you a message, so it's up to you if you want a telegram username. If you've already made one and you want to get rid of it, save a blank username!

Technology is amazing! Now you can talk to your forum friends using your phone!

... So yeah, I think this will be a really cool way for all of us to stay in touch and stuff. Just to reiterate: don't sign up with your full name if you're, like, super worried about privacy or whatever. Other than that, you can come in and talk to me about whatever you want! Oh, and other TCoD members I guess, but we all know it's really me you want to see~

also for the record, in future if anyone has trouble with the chat just look for my username @doejess and I can add you manually. I recently changed the group to a supergroup which borked the URL, so it should work now.
