GIMP Transparency Help

So I'm trying to make an animated GIF with a transparent background; actually, I'm trying to make my current avatar have a transparent background. I've made all of the backgrounds transparent of course, but when it's played back, I can see the previous layers behind it. Is this just something that it does in the playback because GIMP is stupid? Or am I doing something wrong?

GIF can either replace frames or stack them on top of each other when it comes to transparency. As far as I can tell, to get GIMP to use replace mode, you have to add (replace) to the end of every layer name.

Re: GIMP Transparency Help

When you export it as a .gif for the first time, it'll show up with a little dialog box in which you can set both the default frame speed and whether they're cumulative or replacable by default. You /can/ add (replace) at the end of every frame name, but that's kind of a lot of effort.
