• Welcome to The Cave of Dragonflies forums, where the smallest bugs live alongside the strongest dragons.

Guests are not able to post messages or even read certain areas of the forums. Now, that's boring, don't you think? Registration, on the other hand, is simple, completely free of charge, and does not require you to give out any personal information at all. As soon as you register, you can take part in some of the happy fun things at the forums such as posting messages, voting in polls, sending private messages to people and being told that this is where we drink tea and eat cod.

Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

If the whole world were atheist...

No, it implies absolute fact unless you state otherwise. Not everyone has common sense. Commons sense is what shouldbe obvious to people, not necessarily what people find obvious. You can't even prove that what we know as reality is real, how do you expect to prove anything else?

If the whole world were atheist...

I was referring to unqualified statements. "Wars stem from primitive instincts." as a statement implies absolute fact. "I believe that wars stem from primitive instincts." does not imply absolute fact. None of those things were ever common sense. There were commonly-held beliefs. Things that...

If the whole world were atheist...

No, I haven't. I occasionally ask her if she's cast any spells lately and if she's seen the effects she was looking for. Also, we're talking about theism/atheism not religion/areligion. Of course they would, but that would happen anyway, with or without theism. The point is that there are...

If the whole world were atheist...

The evidence is that religion can be a motivation in of itself, therefore disproving your implicit statement that religion is not a motivation in of itself. If someone hits my girlfriend and I hit that person back because I love my girlfriend, am I not fighting for my girlfriend? My point still...

Read the rest of the post you quoted, I explain why there would be less conflict.

If the whole world were atheist...

Thank you for stating the completely obvious. Shockingly, as an atheist, I'm perfectly aware that atheism isn't a united belief, probably because atheism is the lack of a belief, not a belief in itself. I'm a total skeptic and my girlfriend believes in magic; we're both atheist. I'm not denying...

If the whole world were atheist...

The degree of what exactly? And of course the amount of things to fight about matters. If there are ten thousand reasons that two people could start a fight, then they're more likely to start a fight than two people who only have five thousand reasons they could start a fight.

If the whole world were atheist...

There would be drastically less conflict. There'd be a thousand and one less things to fight about.

If the whole world were atheist...

He didn't actually say "become atheist", he said if it "were atheist". As I understand it, he's asking how different the world would be if theism had never existed.
