Terrain: Outside the Battle Arena

The battle takes place right outside the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena facility, out in the open air. The immediate area is covered in nicely manicured grass and a few flowers. The Arena building itself is surrounded on three sides by water and a small pond sits on the other side of the battlers, so water moves can be used and Water-types that need to swim can do so. The battlers cannot move away from the immediate area, so heading towards the plaza or another facility is forbidden.

Since this match is happening so close to the Arena, it seems such a shame not to follow Greta's rules... or, at least, a variation on them. As such, both battlers will send out their PokÈmon and attack for three battle rounds (a total of 9 attacks per PokÈmon) before the ref calls a halt. After the three rounds both PokÈmon are recalled and unable to continue in the current battle, and their current health, energy and status are noted for later. Both trainers will then send out their next Pokémon and continue for the next three rounds. At the end (which should be nine total rounds), the health and energy of all Pokémon is totaled and whichever trainer has the highest score wins.

The following rules also apply:

-If a Pokémon has fainted, either due to HP loss OR energy loss, the battle stops right where it is (even if it has not yet been three rounds) and both Pokémon are recalled. Fainted PokÈmon DO still count toward the final score, but as either their health or their energy is at 0% they won't add anywhere near as much.

-If, at the end of the three rounds, a battler is afflicted with a status condition, that condition detracts from their final score as follows:

Paralyzed, Burned, Confused: -10 points
Poisoned, Attracted: -15 points
Asleep, Frozen: -20 points

If the Pokémon has more than one status condition, only the first one they were afflicted with detracts full points; all others afterwards only detract five, no matter what they are.

A small patch of grass outside the Battle Arena has been roped off and currently stands empty beneath a clear blue Hoenn sky. The little flowers peppering the grass within the enclosure don't know just how lucky they are--their friends and family outside the boundary are getting trampled to death by the gathering of sweaty bystanders who've shown up to watch the upcoming match.

The heat in Hoenn's high summer is tremendous, and all present are fanning themselves with crumpled brochures about the championships, enjoying the breeze flung from battery-operated fans, or armed with water bottles and sun hats. There is more than one comment to the effect that this all could have been done
inside the Battle Arena, where there is actually air conditioning, and these are blissfully ignored by the league officials scattered throughout the crowd.

The bellyaching dies down as soon as the first trainer arrives, though; the crowd parts at the sight of the registration badge pinned to their shirt, and all gripes fall silent as they step over the rope and into the arena. Across the field from them, their opponent does likewise.

The flowers in the arena bob and sway as a light breeze whips through the crowd and a referee materializes at one edge of the field, raising flags. For the moment, they're lucky--but only time will tell how the battle might overturn their little paradise.

Re: MurrMurr vs Involuntary Twitch (ref: Kratos Aurion)

The Union's leader, Ganteiana, shall lead the attack.

Torchic

Ganteiana, start out with a sunny day, then take advantage of our foe's inherent weakness with a flamethrower; use a little extra energy to make it as hot as you can in order to burn. Or, if he changes the weather to rain after your sunny day, sunny day again. Do another flamethrower for your third action regardless.

Sunny day ~ Flamethrower/Sunny day ~ Flamethrower

Re: MurrMurr vs Involuntary Twitch (ref: Kratos Aurion)

Thank Arceus Croagunk is faster than Torchic.

Open up with a Fake Out, prevent the Torchic from getting in that Sunny Day. Now, since you didn't use Rain Dance, the chicken will go for the Flamethrower (I think), but wait until she starts to attack to be sure. If you see fire heading towards you (and the sun doesn't start burning you), quickly put up a Protect. If the sun does brighten and it starts to hurt, soothe the burns with a Rain Dance. Finally, use a one-turn Dig to strike Ganteiana without getting burned (and bring back one-turn Dig memories in my battle vs Kratos).

Good luck, Pancake, and do awesome for me!

Round One: Begin

The bright summer sunlight beats down on the head of Pancake the Croagunk, and frankly he rather wishes it would cut that out. His dry, bluish skin itches uncomfortably, and it's too damn bright out. He rubs irritably at his forehead, squints at the fluffy little Torchic on the grass ahead of him and sighs. At least the rules MurrMurr went over earlier won't keep him out here long... Ganteiana, on the other hand, is enjoying the weather. She twitters happily and shakes herself, letting a little extra light and warmth between her orange feathers; now sufficiently toasty, she turns her gaze forward to focus on the frog Pokémon chargingatherathighspeedholycraphowdidhegetsoclosesofastholycrapHOLYCRAP--!

Pancake's fist only strikes a glancing blow, running across Ganteiana's cheek, but the shock of the speedy attack completely bowls her over on its own. She topples backward onto the grass, little chest heaving as she hyperventilates, startled out of her wits. Pancake turns around and sniggers.

Now thoroughly flustered, Ganteiana struggles to her feet. Her beady black eyes narrow menacingly and she spins around, flames spewing out of her beak toward the chuckling Croagunk behind her. Pancake is one step ahead, however, and is currently sheltering behind a dome of translucent green energy. The intense flames splash off of the shield, immolating the happy little flowers at the dome's base but leaving Pancake himself quite unharmed.

Ganteiana hisses furiously. The ugly little purple thing has outsmarted her twice so far. Well, no more! The flamethrower starts anew, a gout of fire surging across the field... to the spot where Pancake and his protective shield were only moments before. The flames instead strike the fistfuls of dirt that the Croagunk throws up behind him as he digs a shallow tunnel, down just deep enough for his entire body to sink below it and then forward at a fast pace. Ganteiana's beak snaps shut curtly and she glares at the hole before her, muttering dire curses under her breath. That breath is quickly knocked right out of her body when the grass beneath her heaves upward and Pancake bursts forth, slamming his head into her underside and catapulting her several feet into the air. The Torchic comes down with an unpleasant thump in the center of a ring of now quite unhappy flowers. She stands up and winces, her bottom quite sore, and shoots another glare at the broad, cheesy grin poking up out of the ground.

Good first round, Pancake! Let's keep on the offensive and not lose tempo (why am I speaking chess)!

First off, Pancake, let's get some points and some damage with a Toxic. Then, utilize Croagunk's awesome skills for a basic Pokémon and Earthquake twice. If, however, Ganteiana Protects, use Feint instead (thank you, egg moves). If she changes the weather, on the next action use Rain Dance.

Toxic/Feint~Earthquake/Feint/Rain Dance~Earthquake/Feint/Rain Dance

Good luck, o mighty Pancake.

It's just one round, Ana. We can come back from this.

Poison hurts, and status sucks. We don't want that, so Protect from the toxic and take the Feint-- what's one 50-power attack gonna do to you, anyway? And then get technical.

Torchics learn Bounce, which in addition to being super-effective is an efficient way to avoid Earthquake and Feint. So here's where things get tricky. I want you to combo Bounce and Flamethrower-- Bounce up as high as you can into the sky to dodge his Earthquake. Then, as you begin to fall, direct your flamethrower at him and use it as an improvised jetpack, to slow your descent and make sure you avoid his second earthquake, before crashing into him like a fried chicken from hell. This should dodge at least one of his attacks, yeah?

Protect ~ Bounce+Flamethrower

P.S. This may not work but do I get awesome points for trying? :3

Round Two: Begin

A shimmering green barrier materializes in front of Ganteiana, shielding her from any nasty substances that Pancake might want to throw at her. But Pancake is no fool--he knows better than to try poisoning her when she's protecting herself like that. The Croagunk bounds forward and throws another quick jab, striking the barrier with a soft kzzt; when Ganteiana lets it drop, sure that Pancake has finished, his other hand comes out of nowhere and hits her under the chin. Startled, Ganteiana falls back onto her bottom again and coughs angrily.

The grinning Pancake gives his foe no time to recover. He leaps straight up into the air, as high as his springy blue legs will take him, and comes down as hard as he can. Almost immediately the ground around him and Ganteiana begins to tremble, rumbling ominously. Several members of the crowd gasp and a small child stumbles and falls as the shaking becomes more violent. Within seconds a minor earthquake tears through the ground, grass and flowers and dirt bucking and tossing the little Torchic up and down. Ganteiana squawks as shock wave after shock wave bounces her across the battlefield, leaving her feeling a little battered when the earthquake finally rumbles to a halt.

Moaning and wincing, Ganteiana gets her feet back under her and hunkers down, tensing the muscles in her legs. Then she, too springs into the air. Pancake can only tilt his head back and watch as she shoots upward, leaping much, much higher than he had managed before. He has to admit, in spite of himself, that he's sort of impressed; he didn't know that non-frogs could get such respectable air with those scrawny legs.

He is less impressed when Ganteiana reaches her peak height and gravity pulls her straight back down toward him. Certain that she'll be in contact with the ground again in another few seconds he jumps up for a second time, making an effort to throw all of his weight and momentum into the landing. A second earthquake rattles the arena, and several members of the crowd cling to one another as the ground roars and shudders. The hole that Pancake had dug earlier collapses on itself. Rather than land straight on the heaving earth, however, Ganteiana, now only ten feet above her target, opens her mouth and unleashes the biggest flamethrower she can muster--more to give herself extra thrust and keep her off of the quaking ground then to do more damage--and sears Pancake's delicate skin, drawing a long, agonized scream from the Croagunk below. The shaking dies down and Ganteiana plows into Pancake talons first, bowling him over and concentrating what's left of the flamethrower right in his face. Her beak clicks shut and she hops off of her much larger foe, achy but satisfied; Pancake remains where he is, his face badly singed and his body uncomfortably stiff from the impact.

-Ganteiana was not fast enough to avoid the first Earthquake but was just barely able to avoid the second. (Man, figuring out the timing for that was annoying.)
-Flamethrower burned Pancake.
-The damage from Bounce itself was reduced because Ganteiana reduced her speed slightly, but the impact was still hard enough to paralyze Pancake. Such an unlucky little froggy all of a sudden :O
-ugh crappy round, not in the mood but oh, well
-Involuntary Twitch attacks first next round.

Good show this time Ana.

Now, I want you to Fire Spin and keep that frog nice and warm and toasty so he doesn't lose that burn; if he changes the weather to rain ever (although I wouldn't see the point seeing as it's the last round and all), turn it right back to a Sunny Day. After that, if he attacks you with a physical move Counter it, otherwise Flamethrower or Protect if he tries to inflict status on you.

Fire Spin/Sunny Day ~ Flamethrower/Counter/Protect ~ Flamethrower/Counter/Protect

OK, well that round absolutely failed. Twitch, I hate your Torchic

Anyhoo, start off by jumping into the pool and spitting out a Toxic at Ana. The pool may be able to cure your burns (and maybe even heal you, my Dry Skinned Pancake), and if some Toxic gets in the water you're immune to it, so you'll be fine. Then use Feint twice--it is a physical attack, so she'll waste time trying to counter it. and you can rack up poison damage. If you get Flamethrowered on the second action (technicalities not good enough for a Torchic, eh?), then wait until she actually starts Flamethrower and one-turn Dig. I'm going to have to get back at Twitch next round.

Round Three: Begin

Since Pancake seems to be taking his sweet time picking himself up from the ground, Ganteiana is more than happy to go ahead and start without him. Her little orange beak opens wide and a long, thin wisp of flame snakes out of her throat, twisting in a tight spiral in midair as it goes. The stream of fire grows larger and hotter and the swirl grows larger, spinning and reaching both skyward and earthward until it becomes a veritable tornado of flames. The fire spin lurches forward across the battlefield, swaying back and forth on an erratic, unpredictable path; more grass and flowers are completely eaten away as it goes, and more than one member of the crowd shrinks back with a yelp when it swerves briefly toward them before bending in another direction. The vortex continues on its wild path until it has gone as far as Pancake and keeps on swerving right by him, stopping a short distance behind him and still spinning frantically in place.

Pancake sighs gratefully as the tower of fire passes harmlessly by and, having had enough time for a satisfactory breather, slowly stands up. As Ganteiana kicks the scorched ground and curses her luck, Pancake scurries away from the now rather useless fire spin and dives into the nearby pool. As his body hits the chilly water a literal wave of relief washes over him, cooling his stinging face and in general erasing the discomfort of the hot, late summer day. He doesn't have a lot of time to enjoy the water, however; he allows himself to float back up to the top of the pool and then leans on the edge, using it to give himself a little leverage. With an unpleasant croaking sound the Croagunk spits up a gob of goo, sending the noxious purple mess out across the ravaged lawn. It sails a respectable distance of several yards but, like the fire spin before it, fall short of its mark. Ganteiana stares, disgusted, at the dark mess now spattered on the ground a few feet in front of her. Ah, well. At least it's on the ground and not on her.

Ganteiana backs up a few paces and braces herself, waiting to see what Pancake tries next. The frog Pokémon heaves himself up out of the water with a great deal of reluctance and then trots forward, fists raised for another punch (and giving the still-swirling flames a wide berth). He starts running as he draws nearer, and when he is almost upon her Ganteiana prepares to turn his own momentum against him. The attack never comes, however; Pancake stops just short and watches her carefully, arms still raised. The two glare at one another, each waiting for the other two move. When neither does, they both relax and eye each other warily.

Then Pancake lunges again and Ganteiana readies herself once more. And once more Pancake does not follow through with his strike, leaving his opponent hanging as he waits for a defense that is not forthcoming. Now thoroughly frustrated with their utter failure to accomplish anything this round, the two Pokémon simply growl at one another until the referee's whistle blows and they are recalled. The crowd's eyes dart collectively back and forth between the two trainers, waiting to see which Pokémon they will choose next; a few of them stare at the pillar of flames still blazing near the pool, distracted by thoughts of an impending fire running rampant through the Battle Frontier.

Ref's Notes
-Fire Spin missed.
-The pool is several yards away from the center of the battlefield, and so the distance between Pancake and Ganteiana decreased Toxic's accuracy; it also missed.

OK, Purr, open things up with a nice Toxic, followed by Shadow Claw twice. If he protects at any point, use Double Team for 3 clones if you please. If on the second action he Torments or Disables and makes you incapable of using Shadow Claw, use Earthquake instead. If on the second action, he has not been poisoned, try another Toxic unless the reason you couldn't Toxic is because of Taunt. In that case, carry through with your other commands given the situation.

Hey, Phanel, remember when you were an Abra and you fought that Gible? Yeah? Well this is the same thing, except this is its evolved form. Dispatch it in the same manner you did its preevolution.

You've got a convenient advantage in your ability; what I want you to do is take the Toxic the first action and let your Synchronize do the rest, and instead use that time to Ice Punch 'im right where the sun don't shine or thereabouts. Then, turn his attacks against him and Counter both Shadow Claws, for massive damage.

If the Pokémon has more than one status condition, only the first one they were afflicted with detracts full points; all others afterwards only detract five, no matter what they are.

Round Four: Begin

Twin bursts of white light herald the appearance of two fresh, new battlers, a Kadabra and a Gabite materializing on the field where Ganteiana and Pancake had been before. Phanel twirls his spoon idly between his long fingers, scrutinizing his opponent. He's dealt with these blue sand dragons before; sure, this one is bigger than the last one he faced, but then he's bigger than he was the last time he faced one. As Purr watches him intently and the fire spin blazes on in the background, Phanel moves forward with his free hand drawn back. A chilly, sky-blue sheen surrounds his fist as he brings it forward and drives it right into the Gabite's chest before he can react. Icy cold spreads across Purr's scales and he yelps, quickly swatting Phanel's hand away with a fin; the damage in done, however, and his front is now uncomfortably cool.

At least some good can come of this close-quarters assault, however--Phanel is plenty close enough for a point-blank toxic. Purr gags and wretches, stirring up a concoction of various indescribably nasty fluids in his gut before bringing them up and out with a mighty heave. The slimy mess sprays all over Phanel's breastplate and quickly begins eating away at it, sinking into his body and almost immediately sending a tiny wave of nausea washing over him. Awful as the poisonous vomit is, however, Phanel simply grits his teeth and bears it. In fact, rather than try to shove the discomfort out of his mind he seems to embrace it, even fixate on it. His thoughts, carrying the horrendous feeling of toxic poisoning along with them, make their way through the air and into Purr's brain. Almost immediately the dragon-type's eyes widen and he flinches, a similar feeling of malaise striking him from seemingly out of nowhere.

Why, that dirty little... Purr grimaces and glares at the calm, collected Phanel. This is his doing. He doesn't know how--he didn't see any hazardous materials come spewing out of the Kadabra's mouth, after all--but he knows that it's all Phanel's fault. Furious, the Gabite raises a sickle-like claw and swings out at Phanel, a ghostly black aura leaking from its formidable point. The claw cuts through the relatively soft flesh beneath the psychic-type's armor with relative ease, and Purr gruns when he hears Phanel gasp in pain, but his opponent is not unprepared. Phanel reaches out and grabs Purr's arm before the dragon can pull away, his body surrounded by a faint bronze glow. His spoon swings forward and digs into Purr's stomach, and to Purr's shock and disbelief it leaves a deep and incredibly painful gash in his skin. He staggers back, amazed, and Phanel forces a smile onto his face--he's not exactly comfortable right now either, but like hell he's going to let Purr know that.

A few relieved sighs can be heard from the crowd as the wayward fire spin finally dies down and burns itself out, leaving only a ring of scorched, blackened dirt where it was moments ago. One man can be heard cursing and complaining about how he'd just called the Frontier's fire department and told them about it, prompting several others to shush him or berate him for not acting sooner.

Purr seems unconcerned when the bronze aura continues to glow around Phanel, although whether it's because he thinks he has a sound plan or whether he's just too incensed to care is anyone's guess. He lunges forward a second time and really digs his shadowy claw into his foe's body, leaving a new wound, much deeper and more ragged than before, running across the previous injury. Phanel howls with agony, this time unable to pretend to ignore the severe laceration, but he still gouges away at Purr with his spoon. Again and again the innocently blunt-looking object scores the Gabite's scales until Purr finds himself wracked by so much pain that his nerve endings simply seem to shut down. Phanel lets Purr fall back and twitch on the charred ground, surveying his work critically. Ugh. The big blue punching bag is clearly miserable, but all in all Phanel doesn't know whether Purr looks significantly worse than he himself feels. He groans softly and shakes his head as he waits for Purr to stand. Those counterattacks took an awful lot out of him, and the encroaching feeling of nausea seems to be worsening. The audience chattered excitedly as its members fan themselves with hats and programs, completely absorbed in what looks like a close and devastating battle even after only one round.

Round Four: Close

Post-Round Stats

Team MurrMurr (2/3 Pokémon Remaining)

Gabite
Purr (M) [Sand Veil]
Health: 50% (CAPPED)
Energy: 84%
Status: Poisoned (very severe: 1% this round, 2% next); sliced up and dazed

Team Twitchean Union (2/3 Pokémon Remaining)

Kadabra
Phanel (M) [Synchronize]
Health: 58%
Energy: 54%
Status: Poisoned (very severe: 1% this round, 2% next); aching, bleeding and fairly certain that that could've gone better

Arena Status: Two small, very shallow holes sit near the center of the field, a trough of sunken earth between them after Pancake's tunnel collapsed. Most of the grass in front of the building has been burned away by the now-extinguished fire spin. The toxic splatter in the field's center is slowly soaking into the soil.

Pancake's Score: 95 - Purr's Score: 119
Ganteiana's Score: 121 - Phanel's Score: 97

Ref's Notes
-Purr's second Shadow Claw scored a critical hit.
-Purr hit the damage cap on the third action (and so, for the record, technically takes no poison damage this round).
-Involuntary Twitch attacks first next round.

Involuntary Twitch is disqualified and the match goes to MurrMurr. I'm assuming that the reason for no prizes being awarded in the other round 2 DQ is because the battle didn't start, so I believe it goes like this:

MurrMurr gets $20 and Pancake and Purr get 1 exp
Twitch gets no money and cannot make or accept new challenges for two months (?), Ganteiana gets 2 exp and Phanel gets 1 exp
I get $15 for reffing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Negrek.

And so MurrMurr advances to the third round. Good luck!

Wait, what?! That-- that was-- Aw, geez! I was here! At least PM me before you DQ. :/ The post was buried and I forgot to check, sorry.

Well, I'm sorry you forgot, too, but when I looked at the "users who have viewed this thread" it said that you'd last viewed it several minutes after I posted the most recent round, so either I read that wrong or you did view the thread (maybe the board broke as you did and you didn't think to check back...?). Posting is standard procedure for DQ, I have to keep things moving and if you didn't see the reminder in time, well, there's not much I can do about that.

Well... I always PM people about DQ's because I figure that if someone hasn't posted they probably aren't aware of the thread. I always thought PM's were standard procedure, heh.
