Kindling Queen vs. Kai

Okay, get back inside that Barrier before you do anything else if you can. When you get back there, use Charge Beam on Charmeleon. If Charmeleon tries to attack you before that, use Charge Beam to force him away. After that, use Thunder Wave and Toxic.

Meh, we'll fix this. And....I don't know if I'm crazy but your laid out commands are different from your orders...I'll go by the written out piece.

Okay-to avoid further damage we'll use Dig again but don't go straight down. Cut through maybe a foot before tunneling till you're within the perimeter of Chi's barrier or pretty much where you know Chi will be once he stops moving. Then we'll Chill while he wastes his time using his own energy. =P Just calm down a bit and recover some energy so we make no further wasted efforts.

Kindling Queen vs. Kai: Round Five

Arena: Haunted Cemetery

It is a dark and gloomy setting. The full moon lights the dark sky and shines its rays on the tombstones. Many of the stones are damaged and none are fresh. The markings on the stones are old and withered away and out of some rise ghosts. There are small pools of water scattered around from rain, but they are thick and green like marsh muck, making them hard to swim in. The air is cold but still, and the ground is grassy and full of small pebbles. The souls that linger in the cemetery yearn for the thrill of battle and can temporarily fuse themselves with an active Pokemon before they pass into the light.

Round Five: begin!

Eager to avoid the lizard’s powerful-looking attacks, Chi begins to run back toward his barrier, once again charging electricity into his claws. As soon as he reaches the perceived safety of the red bubble, he turns around and fires the electric beam, which Charmeleon manages to avoid with a stylish somersault. As he finishes his dodge, the lizard immediately begins to shovel away the dirt beneath him at an alarming rate, digging a second tunnel for himself. As Charmeleon works feverishly below, Chi is at least a little comforted by the dissipation of the last of his enemy’s smokescreen.

<Charmeleon: -0H, -5E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1, Acc -1 / working hard>
<Chi: -0H, -6E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1 / thankful that the smoke’s finally gone>

Gathering more shimmering electric energy from within, the fox Pokemon wonders what exactly to do with it. He’d been commanded to paralyze his opponent with it, but the lizard is nowhere to be seen and, frankly, he doesn’t want to leave his safety bubble. Sighing halfheartedly, Chi shoots his thunder energy haphazardly at the hole where he’d last seen the salamander, but the wave dissipates as it hits the upturned earth.

After clawing through earth and hoping not to disturb any coffins, Charmeleon finally finds himself in the tunnel he’d made earlier! He remembers being ordered to get within Chi’s barrier, but the bubble doesn’t appear to reach down this far. Satisfied at least with this attempts, he jumps down to the bottom of the original tunnel for some time to chill out. As he lazily relaxes, he is pleased to find that the bright afterimage left by Chi’s flash of light so long ago has finally faded.

<Charmeleon: -0H, +15E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1 / much more energetic>
<Chi: -0H, -3E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1 / wondering what to do, if he can’t target Charmeleon>

As Charmeleon continues to chill underground, Chi waits as long as he feels he can to attack, but it doesn’t appear that the lizard is going to return to the surface soon. Resigned to another miss, the fox spits up some toxic stomach acid, aiming it so as to splatter roughly over Charmeleon’s most recently-dug hole. If he isn’t going to be able to hit the lizard, he can at least leave a surprise for him when he exits.

<Charmeleon: -0H, +15E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1 / relaxed and feeling wonderful>
<Chi: -0H, -4E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1 / impatient for the lizard to emerge>

Almost as soon as Chi finishes his attack, he is alarmed when the earth beneath him begins to shift uncomfortably. “Charmeleon’s tunnelling has made the earth weak,” the referee points out to the puzzled Trainers. “That spot is the weakest, and it’ll probably collapse sometime during the next round.” With that in mind, the Trainers prepare their commands for the next round.

Not far off the path, near the center of the graveyard, there is a very obvious hole which has been dug deep into the soil. A few meters down, it sharply angles parallel to the ground, crossing beneath the path before returning to a near-vertical angle. Just before the surface, though, the tunnel stops, connecting to another tunnel going parallel to the ground, only a foot or two below the surface. This second tunnel ends in a hole that sits several meters away from the first hole, on the opposite side of the path. This second hole is splashed with toxic fluids. It’s probably not a good idea to touch this hole.

The ground above the point where the two tunnels intersect is getting very unstable, and it probably won’t be able to support any weight for much longer. (Approximately 2 actions remaining.) An almost-transparent red sphere rests on the surface above where the tunnel stops; it’s big enough to hold a few Abra, but not much more.

Ref’s notes:
1. Pokedex used: Veekun @ http://veekun.com/
2. Random number generator used: @ http://javascript.internet.com/games/dice-roller.html
3. Charge Beam missed due to a bad dice roll, and Chi’s other two attacks missed because they could not travel through the hole.
4. Charmeleon used slightly less energy than normal to Dig because he was not attacking with it.
5. The ground where Abra is standing is getting increasingly unstable as a result of Charmeleon’s tunnelling activity. At the moment, it looks like it’ll last about 2 more actions. Applying more force to the ground will make it collapse sooner, and if Abra moves off that spot, it probably wouldn’t collapse as soon.
6. If I can find a Paintlike image-editing software for my new MacBook, I'm totally doing another battlefield diagram, because these tunnels' intersections are getting hella hard to describe.
7. Kindling Queen will attack first next round.

Okies, good boy! =3

Now...we'll have to be obnoxious and make this more confusing. Sorry Jack! ^^; Okay, we'll start by using Dig off on a random end within the Barrier to only put a hole but wait for Chi to act first before doing so that way you don't risk getting hit with anything. Make sure you don't make this hole within 3 feet of Chi and the loose ground. Next use Dig again on another random spot for a peeking hole and afterwards release Smokescreen. As soon as you release the smoke go back underground and wait in the tunnel you made the first time to avoid any hits. Make sure you allow Chi's actions to come first before you act and never totally stick your head out of the ground.

ahaha, here we go again. Since Charmeleon is attacking second, I want you to use PROTECT to defend yourself. Immediately after he attacks, use IRON TAIL to cause a cave-in. If you manage to harm and damage the Charmeleon, good job, just CHILL for a bit. If not, use PSYCHIC before he can smoke the arena.

Round Six: begin!

Still shaken up from the instability of the earth beneath him, Chi gets it together enough to create a shimmering golden sphere of energy around him. Although the sphere is sturdy enough to protect its owner by absorbing any attack that hits it, the effort to make it seems to have been wasted. The ground shifts another tiny bit, and several seconds later a hole appears several meters to the north, with a pair of claws visibly digging it open from below. Charmeleon, however, doesn’t surface, puzzling Chi. The golden shield gives a last twinkle and disappears, leaving only the reddish glow of Barrier behind.

<Charmeleon: -0H, -5E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1 / hard at work>
<Chi: -0H, -4E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1 / puzzled>

Although he is reluctant to remain in such a tectonically active spot, Chi must follow his orders. His tail begins to glow as a hot, metallic fluid begins to seep out of it. The metal rapidly cools, resulting in an iron sheet wrapped around Chi’s tail. With a worrying grimace, the fox prepares to strike the ground beneath him.

Meanwhile, Charmeleon reaches his central tunnel, the “hub” of his tectonic activity. As he prepares to cut another tunnel through the earth, he hears a deep rumble from above. That can’t be good, he has time to think, and then he is buried alive by the collapsing ground.

When the ground finally settles, the lizard extends his claws and begins to tunnel out once again. Poking his head out of the hole, he sees that the spot where Chi had sat is now an enormous hole in the ground, with no sign of the fox except the now-vacant red bubble which hovers at ground level above the sinkhole.

<Charmeleon: -8H, -5E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1 / Where did my opponent go?>
<Chi: -5H, -8E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1 / trying to surface>

Finding himself trapped beneath the debris he himself had caused to fall, Chi continues to try to tunnel out. Luckily for him, he is buried very near to the surface, so within only a minute or two he manages to scratch his way out far enough to stick his head above ground. Although not finding the situation peaceful at all, Chi tries to feel a little Zen about his situation, and chills out.

Meanwhile, from within his most recently-dug hole, Charmeleon waves his tail around toward the surface. Once again, his flame warms to a bright blue color, giving off pitch-black smoke that spreads over the central area of the graveyard. Chi closes his eyes as the smokescreen reaches the sinkhole, and Charmeleon ducks back down into the depths of his tunnels, where the smoke has not yet reached.

In the center of the graveyard, just west of the path, there is a large hole where the ground has collapsed. Remnants of gravestones and the corners of coffins can be seen sticking out of the ground. The huge hole is about two meters deep and three meters in diameter. Within this large hole, there are a few smaller holes, each roughly the size of a Charmeleon, leading approximately west, east, north, and southwest. There is a little debris filling each of these tunnels, but probably not enough to stop a fairly strong Pokemon from getting through. The hole at the end of the western tunnel is covered in toxic fluids. The southwest tunnel is considerably nearer to the large hole than the others are.

A transparent, reddish bubble of energy floats in the air, about at ground level, above the large hole. It would be difficult, if not impossible, for either battler to reach this bubble, much less stay inside long enough for it to have an effect. It is beginning to fade.

The battlers are surrounded by a nasty, thick, black smoke that hangs low to the ground, making it difficult to see anything. There is not enough to fill the whole graveyard, but its area is enough to encloak both battlers, their Trainers, and the ref. The cloud of smoke is strongest around the southwestern small hole. (9 actions remaining.)

Ref’s notes:
1. Pokedex used: Veekun @ http://veekun.com/
2. Random number generator used: @ http://javascript.internet.com/games/dice-roller.html
3. Like the previous round, Charmeleon used slightly less energy than normal to Dig because he was not attacking with it.
4. Chi didn’t manage to directly strike Charmeleon with Iron Tail because he was underground, both Pokemon were damaged by the ground’s collapse: Charmeleon because he was right underneath it, and Chi from debris (because, well, he’s right there in the middle of everything. I treated this like a Ground-typed Rock Tomb because that’s the closest thing I could think of to the situation.
5. Chi recovered less energy than normal in the third action because he spent part of it trying to surface.
6. Kai will attack first next round.

Okay, let's go for it this time. Start off by Teleporting to get inside your bubble again if Charmeleon tries to attack. If he doesn't try to attack you, just get into your bubble and Chill. Then, use Shock Wave twice. If Charmeleon tries too attack you during the second round, use Drain Punch when he gets close.

Chill/Teleport~Shock Wave~Shock Wave/Drain Punch.

Okies, let him do what he wants because this combo. is forced into last to act. We'll use Aerial Ace+Focus Punch and after the blow go on and go towards the thickest coated area of smoke to try and confuse the aim as best you can. The final action can simply be a Chill but if you feel you are close to a tomb stone you may destroy it with brick break. We'll see if you can handle being possessed.

Round Seven: begin!

Starting to get tired and still feeling a little choked by the thick smoke cloaking the graveyard, Chi obediently takes a moment to rest, since Charmeleon shows no signs of attempting an attack. Closing his eyes to stave off the irritating vapor, he contemplates how nice it will be to rest in his Pokeball after getting rid of this pesky lizard. Chilling out has a wonderful effect on his nerves, and Chi feels entirely relaxed and ready to continue battle.

Unfortunately for Chi, Charmeleon’s apparent rest is not a refrain from offense, but instead just a preparatory stage. As Charmeleon focuses on charging his attack, his hand starts to glow brightly. When his fist is ready, the lizard jumps out of his hole and charges Chi with the speed of an Aerial Ace attack, punching the fox with all his might. The Abra has just enough time to register that the punch has hit a soft spot between his chest and shoulder before the force of the attack knocks him several feet away. He lands near the side of the hole and cautiously rises, wincing, as Charmeleon escapes into the smoke.

<Charmeleon: -0H, -13E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1, Acc -1 / proud of himself>
<Chi: -26H, +10E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1, Acc -1 / extremely hurt>

Feeling a healthy desire for revenge now in addition to his recovered energy, Chi knows exactly how to harm his opponent without having to look for him. The fox charges within himself the same electric energy he’d used to make the Charge Beams, but instead of focusing it through his hands, he releases it from his entire body in a wave that coruscates off into the smoke, releasing tiny sparks of electric shock with every smoke particle that it hits. Chi hears a grunt somewhere off to the right, and knows that the attack has done its job.

Trying to shake off the static energy that just flowed through him, Charmeleon begins to stumble off further into the darkness when he walks straight into a stone grave marker. Remembering his commands, he punches the stone a few times with his usual power, which is still strong enough to break even bricks. On the third punch, the grave cracks in two. A cackling white ghost ekes out of the broken headstone, circling around Charmeleon before seeming to change its mind and floating off into the moonlight.

<Charmeleon: -6H, -5E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1, Acc -1 / kind of glad not to be possessed>
<Chi: -0H, -6E / Atk +2, Sp. Atk +2, Sp. Def +1, Acc -1 / wondering what that cackle was>

Without another sign of Charmeleon except for that creepy cackle, Chi decides to try another Shock Wave. The bright electric energy releases from his body, traveling far beyond Chi’s range of visibility. The fox is able to see only by the light of the dimly fading red bubble above him when he hears Charmeleon’s telltale groan.

<Charmeleon: -6H, -0E / Atk +4, Sp. Atk +1, Acc -1 / tired of these electric attacks>

Ref’s notes:
1. Pokedex used: Veekun @ http://veekun.com/
2. Random number generator used: @ http://javascript.internet.com/games/dice-roller.html
3. Aerial Ace + Focus Punch was a critical hit. Ouch. Abra resists Fighting but not Flying, so for the combo I used a modifier (.835) that’s halfway between resistant and neutral. Charmeleon was docked 2 points (-2 damage/+2 energy) instead of 1 for antiSTAB because neither type is his own.
4. I find it funny that the chance of Charmeleon being possessed was 10%, and my dice rolled an 11. Close, but no cigar.
5. The Reflect bubble is fading and will be gone by the end of next round, as neither battler is using or, indeed, even able to use it, and Chi is more focused with the battle than with maintaining upkeep of energy. If Kai wants to command Chi to continue upkeep of the bubble, he can, but it really isn’t going to do anyone any good since it’s floating up in the air where nobody can reach it since they don’t have wings.
6. As far as Chill goes: when this battle started I was using +15 for Chill. Since then I’ve started to think +10 is more reasonable (and, indeed, that’s what I’m using in my other reffings). I intended to keep it as +15 for this battle for continuity’s sake, but I just realized that I accidentally used +10 in the previous round by mistake, so I went with that again for this round. If either of you have a problem with the change, then when the next round starts I’ll add the extra energy that Chi would have gotten (5% per Chill, total 10%) and use +15 for the rest of the battle. Otherwise, I’ll continue with +10 if it’s okay with the two of you.
7. NaNoWriMo starts tomorrow and I’ll be participating. Unfortunately, this means I probably won’t have the time or energy to ref. I’ll be reffing again as soon as November’s over (or if I give up early like I have in previous years), but until then, you’ll have to either get an emergency ref or just wait. Sorry, guys.
8. Kindling Queen will attack first next round.

Tis fine. I don't mind waitting or finding an e-reff. Kai can choose. =P

Well this is annoying, these awful Shock Waves! Don't let them take hold of you! We must endure! Begin with Dig and make a new tunnel. If Chi follows don't be afraid to slap him with mud on the way while scooping dirt. Have this tunnel lead a few feet outside of the barrier and use Dig once more upclose to the surface to make an open top trench. If Chi does not follow and remains down in the Smokescreen make your last move Chill. If Chi shows up at the top when you get there and you hadn't used Mud Slap use Flamethrower. Do your best to avoid any attacks and given there's any attacks at the surface duck your head.
