Chikorita turns the colour of Envy’s necklace and disappears into her pokéball. Without another comment, or any time to think, Ameroq01 removes another pokéball from her belt and tosses it. A six-tailed orange fox materialises on the grass where Chikorita had been. She yawns, showing small, sharp fangs, then gives Envy a challenging grin.

Kam looks as casual as Vulpix as he orders Envy to do the impossible, and then offers an alternative that is almost the same but actually possible. Envy shoots him an irritated glare for almost giving her a heart attack for a moment (an impressive feat, for obvious reasons), but quickly calms down, as she can see the benefits of his orders. Ameroq01 chooses pretty fiery effects of various kinds, mostly those that will cause Envy pain. Vulpix brightens at this, obviously approving very much of her commands.

Vulpix draws in a deep breath, inflating her lungs with warm summer air. Chemicals from her fire sac leak into her mouth, then a spark, and with a mighty exhale, Vulpix looses a stream of clean orange flames that tear through Envy’s body. Envy disappears into the flames for a moment, aware of nothing but bright light and sharp, intense pain, but it’s over in a second. Still, Envy feels abnormally warm in the aftermath, and the uncomfortable sensation of the vines crumbling into dust and falling through her do not make up for the fact that there are not longer any roots in her head.

Scowling, Envy decides to give Vulpix a taste of her own medicine – or at least, one of rather similar flavour. She concentrates, and a blue fireball erupts in front of her. With another mental prod, she sends the ethereal flame rocketing toward Vulpix, though it needs further direction to stay on track. Vulpix watches the fireball, looking excited, then when it comes close, she paws at it. Envy watches her with surprise, but the effect looks normal enough, setting the paw on fire and then disappearing. Except not. Vuplix just grins, and a red glow spreads from her paw to the rest of her body.

Vulpix lowers her head and shoulders to the ground, tail fanning out and sticking straight up. A blue ball of fire appears between her middle tails. The dancing flames give it the illusion of grace even as it rockets in Envy’s general direction, comes to an awkward stop and turns, and continues on a rough path toward Envy. Still, it makes it, touching Envy’s forehead and setting a spot on her forehead on fire. The intense, searing pain feels more like being stabbed, and when the fire disappears, the pain lowers to a dull ache.

Envy twitches, possibly due to paralysis but more likely due to anger. She gives Vulpix a cold stare, but a cruel smile forms on her face instead of an expression of fury. She chants, voice low and ominous, and sways as if in response to a wind Vulpix can’t feel. The few shadows in the field leap and dance. A circle draws itself in ghostly light, with runes and symbols appearing around the edges. Vulpix blinks when everything goes dark, except for Envy and a nightmarishly long needle floating above the ghost. The needle slowly sinks downward, into Envy’s head and through her body entirely, causing Vulpix to scramble away in horror. Then the pin pulls itself out with a sick, wet sound, and flies toward Vulpix. Then it’s gone. A dark liquid sprays out of the holes in Envy’s body like blood, and she goes limp.

Vulpix stares at the unconscious ghost, bewildered and a little scared. Why did she do that? They were suppose to have a big fight, but then she just went and killed herself, and god she’s still bleeding when ghosts shouldn’t bleed—that’s not what a battle is supposed to be like!

Movement catches Vulpix’s attention, and she looks to the side. The huge needle floats there, pointing toward Vulpix’s side. It moves slowly toward her flesh, but Vulpix can’t move to escape. She can only watch when the needle pierces through her flesh and tears through muscle, and when the needle and paralysis vanish, she whimpers and curls around her injury. She licks at the blood leaking from her side, but no matter where she looks, she thinks she can see that needle hovering around the edge of her vision.

A red beam strikes Envy and turns her the colour of blood. She melts and disappears, only to be replaced by a small sheep. The mareep's wool crackles every time she moves, though Vulpix only pays a little attention to her new opponent. It's possible that the mareep can inflict as much pain as the cursed thing threatening Vulpix with its rusted needle, but it's not the same as a shadow coming from nowhere, unable to be attacked or stopped, attacking without any chance of being stopped. She's confident she could take on Tesla in a fair fight, but that's only because Tesla can be hurt. Now, though, Vulpix has two opponents, and one of them is unstoppable. Even the promise of inflicting a fiery death upon Tesla doesn't cheer the vulpix up. Tesla, meanwhile, is perfectly happy with her orders, especially with the part involving the preparation of thunderspam. Or at least, she hopes so. It would be better than getting stuck with low-powered moves like thundershock, and much prettier, too.

Vulpix takes in a slow, deep breath, as much to calm herself down as it is to prepare for her next attack. She looks almost swollen, holding the air in her lungs, but there is a glint in her eye that makes her look dangerous anyway. Tesla steps back, nervously. She knows she won't manage to weaken the fire in time, and despite Kam's derision of the chosen move, Tesla is aware that the charging time implies something very painful is to come. And she's right. Vulpix looses a massive blast of flames, burning the image of a fire kanji into Tesla's eyes. Then the flames wash over her, pain slicing her face and pouring acid on her skin. Fortunately, her eyelids are not fused shut and although her face is slightly melting, she can still move. She feels like crying more than anything, but she is willing to go for pain instead. She moves quickly in an awkward dance, placing her feet almost-right and missing a few steps, but the clouds still crowd into the sky and thicken. The clouds throw shadows over the field and block the sun. Then it begins to rain with fat pellets of water that sting Tesla's face instead of soothing it.

Vulpix is still too miserable herself to take any pleasure in Tesla's pain. It is mostly mechanically that she draws her energy to her core and forces her body to heat up. The rain hitting her body turns to steam. The rain doesn't even hit Tesla, though, which Vulpix might have noticed if she were paying more attention. Tesla focuses hard on keeping the energy shell between herself and the next bit of fire about to come from Vulpix's mouth; she really doesn't want another repeat of the fire blast. The attack is more like a flash, as Tesla cannot see the white flames licking at her protect or the large amounts of steam bursting into the air.

Panting, Vulpix takes a moment to realise Tesla actually wasn't hit, though her anxiety is unrelated. The needle is coming soon; she can almost feel it! Her eyes dart to every possible shadow, trying to see where the attack might come from. She heats up her body again, forcing it to high temperatures that even fire-types found painful, and looses it in a (slightly smaller) blast of white flame. This time there is nothing to protect Tesla from its might, save for the water erupting into vapour within moments. The angle is slightly different, this time, searing Tesla's side instead of her face. Tesla shudders. She hates fire! But now at least she can get some revenge. She calls on the clouds, releasing a few sparks in her attempt to control outside electricity. The charge builds up frighteningly quickly, and with a brilliant flash, Vulpix suddenly finds her muscles locked and can feel nothing but severe pain shooting through her entire body. She falls, shuddering, and whimpers. The needle glints even in the muted sunlight, thought this time blood coats its length.

Tesla almost screams. Trembling and vulnerable as Vulpix looks, Tesla never expected for a hole to suddenly open in Vulpix's side, or the pathetic cry that sounds nothing like a casual opponent.

This is a battle. Random ghosts and weapons trying to kill her or not, Vulpix can't just give up! Even if it'll come back--she has to keep fighting. She closes her eyes and focuses. First she has to draw the frame of the structure around her in her mind, a hollow sphere around her through the ground and rain, and then the energy flows into it. The impermeable shield is almost clear, with only a slightly green tint, but the rain dripping down it gives it away. It is only then, under protection of the shield, that she stands. She sways for a moment, but shifts her feet and stabilises herself. She stares at Tesla, trying to look challenging but looking more mournful, and waits for the attack.

Tesla's sparking wool is not entirely unexpected, and Vulpix tenses despite herself. The released energy is not as great as she thought it would be, though, and Vulpix narrows her eyes. Tesla, no matter what her pouts might say, does not at all mind doing something easy and low-cost after a powerful attack like thunder, though she would like to show off her power a bit by using strong attacks. Still, she can pretend. She raises herself onto her hind legs, then drops with a cry. Vulpix tenses and lowers her head. A weak bolt of electricity leaps from Tesla's wool and into the shield, evaporating some water but fizzling into nothing.

A tiny jolt of electricity like that? Vulpix has taken a massive bolt of lightning before, and she survived it just fine. She knows her trainer spoke after the opponent's did, so she thought it was directly related to the attack. That can't be it, though, can it? It doesn't even look harmful. Perhaps it was one of those--what was it called?--if-clauses.

Vulpix barely has time to catch her breath before she has to summon the shield again, this time with a sliver of doubt. She rushes it, forcing energy into its shell-like shape before manipulating it into a stable form. The energy threatens to break from her control, but she manages it. Sparks fly from Tesla's wool, and her tail flares. The leaping bolt of electricity is just a thread, though, disappearing without any further input on Vulpix's part. Tesla only shows a mildly disappointed expression.

Relieved that she doesn't have to try her luck with a third shield, Vulpix instead focuses on a simpler construction of energy: light. She fans out her tail. A single orb appears from each tip, glittering and seemingly made of hundreds of tiny flickering lights each. The lights swirl through the air and surround Tesla, flashing vivid reds and greens and blues. One orb almost touches her nose. She stares at it, awed by the sparkling and flashes. More orbs fill her vision, flashing bright colours everywhere at once, and then she's suddenly not sure if they're still there or she's just seeing the patches of colours.

If Vulpix was hoping it would help against her opponent, she shouldn't have bothered. Sparks flash and pop around Tesla's wool, and a thin stream of electricity leaps through the air. This time, though, Vulpix realises the danger: though the pain is a short-lived sting, her muscles suddenly twitch and lock up. Even with four legs, Vulpix finds she was much more reliant on her subconscious muscle movements for balance than she thought. Especially with the jerks her limbs made without her consent. She topples over, landing with a splash in the mud.

Weak, helpless, Vulpix can't even show her fear or discomfort when the needle, dripping blood that turns to vapour before it reaches the grass, once again shows itself. She's no less able to stop it than before, but somehow that makes it worse. She mentally cowers when it approaches, but still flinches when it shoots into her flesh. Tesla jumps and stares wide-eyed at the new injury. She doesn't have any real objections to any advantages she might have, but how does she know if the invisible attacker is really working with her? It might just be a neutral party, like the magikarp probably is, or random. She shifts her weight, frowning. Besides, it doesn't really look like Vulpix is enjoying the battle as much as she should.

She shrieks when, with a loud pop, something stings her foreleg. She flails it, trying to see, but she's hit by a sudden wave of dizziness and patches of light flare up where she might see blood. She's being attacked! The ghost is going after her! Next it's going to stab her, and eat her organs, and then kill her!

Tesla’s tail glows softly, bluish-white rather than its usual yellow. A red patch explodes into her vision, but she thinks hard and focuses on the shape. It’s not hard, but then an orange and a green orb crawl across her eyeball, and she wants to rub it away. Yet the bell tolls, beautiful and clear, lifting the cloud of confusion from her mind and erasing the lights in her eyes.

Vulpix feels her muscles tighten, but it’s not uncomfortable enough to stop her. She focuses, remembering the warm feeling of safety (it won’t save her) and sends the protective energy through her body. Her skin emanates a green aura, but it’s not only that—the insides of her wounds, clearly visible, also glow green, as does the blood dripping out of her, if only for a moment.

The much-ignored magikarp, who had been ineffectually whining for the past few rounds, finally makes his move. He jerks sharply against the ground, throwing himself several metres into the air. He lands hard, smacking Tesla across the back, and slides off her wool with a crackle. He lands with a small splash. Tesla whips around and stares at him in surprise. Though her back stings, the pain is not severe. It is rather more shocking that the magikarp did anything at all. Of course, Tesla has no quarrel with the magikarp (yet), so she steps away from him, instead toward Vulpix. Her wool fluffs up and doubles in size, then it breaks off and floats through the air. Vulpix finds her muscles tightening even further, even stopping her breathing, so she can do nothing as the fluff alights around her. It clings to the grass and her fur, quickly covering her body and face. One lands on her nose, but she can’t even sneeze. She can’t concentrate on… whatever it was her trainer said, because the tickle in her nose and tension in her face make it impossible to think of anything.

Again irritated at being annoyed, the magikarp shoves against the ground and throws himself up in the air—though it seems a bit more difficult than before. He slows until he falls, unable to resist gravity, and lands right in the cotton beside Vulpix. Vulpix finally unleashes a sneeze, sending the bit of cotton flying off her nose. The magikarp twitches in surprise.

Sparks fly from Tesla’s wool. Her summoned clouds respond to her mental call, and a static charge builds up impossibly fast. With a brilliant flash, a bolt of lightning spears from the clouds and through Vulpix’s body, and with it comes a clap of thunder and a wave of heat. That, too, dissipates faster than it should, even more than the lightning through the ground, but the magikarp—closer than would be advised to Vulpix—still feels the lightning trying to roast him. Vulpix struggles to her feet and, with a glance at her puncture wounds, gathers her life energy into a ball in her throat. She tries to make it a small one, but more life energy separates from her body and into the collected mass. Soreness settles into her bones, but trying to ignore it, she breathes out a white flame that quickly takes the shape of a small, flaming six-tailed fox.

She stares at it with relief. Surely, she thinks, surely this will protect her! The sudden jump beside her doesn’t worry her, though the magikarp smacks Tesla’s back a second time instead of trying to hit the substitute. Tesla grumbles under her breath at the magikarp, who just stares up at her with a lifeless eye.

A shadow appears at the edge of Vulpix’s vision, and she turns to face it confidently, knowing she is safe. But the substitute doesn’t move, perhaps unable to sense the danger, and the needle successfully stabs her in the much-abused side of her body. Vulpix cries out, in both pain and betrayal, but the flaming substitute just sits and watches the two other pokémon, ignoring its master’s need.

It is a basic Lv. 19 male Magikarp. You may attack this Magikarp if you wish. However, if it falls below 80% HP, it will suddenly evolve into a Gyarados that will attack a random Pokemon at the end of each action. The Gyarados's moves are chosen by the ref.

Tesla sparks and crackles, more powerfully than before—or at least, that’s what it looks like, because for once the attack is coming from her. A bolt of electricity leaps from her body and tears through the substitute. The substitute holds for a moment when the attack fades, and shatters. Vulpix gives the substitute a look, then closes her eyes and concentrates. Her mind spreads out, trapping Tesla and even the unsuspecting magikarp in its grasp. A circle appears on the ground below both pokémon, and one in the air mirroring it. Beams shoot from between the circles, creating something that looks like a cage. Both pokémon feel like there’s something they suddenly cannot do, but neither can imagine what it is.

The magikarp twitches, ignored by the other two. He grunts and tries to smack the floor as hard as he did before, but his muscles won’t respond.

A few sparks fly from Tesla’s wool. She smiles slightly at Vulpix, knowing this will be over soon. With that creepy needle-thing, there’s no way Vulpix will last the round. A flash of light, and Vulpix is on the ground, feeling the residual pain and muscle twitches. The roar of thunder accompanies her gasps. With a groan, Vulpix struggles to her feet. Her muscles barely respond, not because of paralysis or the burn of exhaustion, but simply because everything hurts so much. She can barely concentrate on Tesla, but she lets the uncomfortably itchy water droplets clear her mind until the mareep’s form is clear.

Vulpix fills her lungs with oxygen and opens her fire sac. A blast of fire pours out of her mouth, five prongs branching from the blast and licking at the air. Rain slices through the flames, but the fire washes over Tesla without mercy. Perhaps it’s a little cooler than it might have been, but with her skin dying off her frame, she can’t really tell.

A painful sting in her side brings Tesla’s attention to the magikarp, who flops weakly. His muscles are still noncompliant, but trapping a bit of air in a sphere of water energy and mucus—that’s not too hard.

Her next strike, then, is perfectly justifiable revenge. Sparks fly from her wool, but the command to the sky is invisible, as is the massive charge building up in the clouds. A slight tingle is Vulpix’s only warning, but it’s not enough. A bolt of lightning crashes into her body and sends a jolt of pain through her one last time, and she’s out before the light stops burning into Tesla’s eyes. Vulpix’s body goes limp and falls to the ground.

Apparently irritated about something, the referee walks over to the magikarp and kicks it. The magikarp flips over and gives the referee an impassive stare. Ameroq01 recalls Vulpix in a beam of red light, a curious expression on her face, and the referee kicks the magikarp a second time. This time, the magikarp glows white. Its body changes shape and grows, stretching across the grass and rearing up. Its mouth widens and large fangs grow. The light fades away to reveal the blue scales underneath.

The gyarados glares down at the trainers and roars. It dives toward Tesla, darkness dripping from its fangs, but Kammington recalls the mareep before the gyarados can crush her. The gyarados bites dirt instead, and rips a chunk of earth from the ground. Blue-green flame rushes from its mouth, engulfing Kammington—or perhaps not, as he dives out of the way just in time, and the flame only manages to shrivel grass. The wind howls, throwing hard rain into the trainers’ faces. With another scream, the gyarados slams its head onto the ground, sending shockwaves that throw the trainers off their feet.

Satisfied, the referee walks away, leaving the two trainers to their fate.

Good match, Ameroq. It was stupid of me to trigger Flash Fire with Envy, but otherwise I think we both did a pretty good job.
