Wyvern vs. Blastoise

Wyvern vs. Blastoise, Round Seventeen

Pre-Round Stats

Team Wyvern (1/3 Pokémon Remaining)

Riolu
Rory (M) [Steadfast] [Levitate]
Health: 60%
Energy: 45%
Status: Heal blocked; grumpy and oddly worn out
Rory's Commands: Substitute 20% ~ Swords Dance/Mud-Slap ~ Blaze Kick

Stealth Rock: active

Team Blastoise (1/3 Pokémon Remaining)

Bronzor
China (X) [Levitate] [Steadfast]
Health: 50%
Energy: 43%
Sig Mod: A Good Polishing
Status: Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1; Burned (light); why does this not seem to be going so well all of a sudden?
China's Commands: Facade ~ Mirror Shot ~ Mirror Shot/Reflect/Rollout

Arena: Imperial City ruins

The Imperial City used to be teeming with activity. However, with the fall of the Empire, it was quickly weathered down to an almost flat ground. Although it was tall enough to be seen from anywhere in Cyrodiil, even White Gold Tower has been reduced to nothing but dust. The only thing that still stands intact is the Temple Cauldron which is protected by the power of the Divine, Akatosh.

During each round, there is a 20% chance of the Divine, Talos, joining his power with that of Akatosh and causing the Dragonfires to ignite in the cauldron for 5 rounds. Its mysterious energy raises the power of Fire and Dragon type moves by 1.25 times the normal amount. However, the spirit of the flame burns brightly in the hearts of all Pokemon which cancels all effects of the Burn status other than the damage.

The presence of the two Divines suppresses evil, causing all Dark type moves to do only 3/4 of the normal damage. Also, Dark type Support moves have no effect (meaning that Nasty Plot would be useless, but Crunch can still lower your Defense).

Round Seventeen: Begin

Unaccustomed to levitation as he is, it takes Rory a moment to collect and orient himself. A few moments of aimless leg-flailing finally drives home the point that he is definitely not in contact with the ground, however, and so he gives up and decides to worry about this whole "flying" deal later. The battered rubble beneath his feet begins to slide and shake, rattling itself up into the air alongside the irritable riolu. An invisible force binds the rubble together in the shape of a second riolu that hovers low above the ground alongside its creator; the odd pair is together for only a few seconds before Rory himself vanishes.

Scowling inwardly as it sees the familiar construct take shape, China backs up a few inches and then throws itself through the air with as much spin as it can put on its disc-like form. The bronzor hurtles forward and collides with the substitute, smashing it to the ground in Rory's stead; before it can collect itself properly and rise back into the air, China slams into it again. It batters away at the gravelly golem as hard as it can, knocking rocks and debris off of its target as it goes. When the mirror pokémon retreats at last, the substitute Rory is missing an arm and half of its featureless head. It is, however, still standing, and whatever relief China might have felt while venting its frustration is diminished when it becomes airborne again.

Rory, tucked away in a secret dimensional pocket between the city ruins and parts unknown, is satisfied that his substitute is still holding up and that he is free to get back on track. Unseen by the irritated China, the real riolu straightens up and stretches, then begins to dance. His movements start out slow, almost stately, one paw moved deliberately in front of the other. But then he picks up speed, leaping and dashing to and fro and relishing the surge of adrenaline and confidence that accompanies the more frenzied movements.

His dance comes to an abrupt end without warning, however--an invisible force grabs at him and yanks him forcibly back into the ruins and throws him to the rubble-strewn ground. The last thing he sees before his face hits the dirt is a few silver sparkles hovering in the air above the tiny molehill of gravel that used to be his substitute. He glowers up at China when he resumes hovering; the bronzor's face is impassive and expressionless as ever, but he just knows it's having a smug little snicker about ruining his lovely substitute with its sparklyspecial whateveritwas.

A good blaze kick would probably mar that sparklyspecial face of its, though... and this time Rory doesn't intend to miss. After a few more seconds of ungainly flailing he is able to propel himself forward, then flip himself around in midair so that his left foot, now cloaked in intense, reddish flames, is aimed directly at China's nose. The sputtering cauldron he leaves behind gives one last, hearty flare before going out entirely, almost as if to transfer its own fire to Rory. Riolu and bronzor collide in a spray of flame and sparks that almost knocks China clear out of the air--it takes a considerable amount of will for it to remain airborne.

As the flames subside and Rory retreats, China's nose is left singed a charcoal black. It is unable to see the extent of the damage itself, but it can make a pretty good guess as to the condition of its polish--less perfect and marvelous than it was before. Dejected, it gives off a slightly lackluster glow as it draws upon the light in the area. A shimmering wall of pale, golden energy takes shape in front of it--too late, China realizes, to protect its face from that blaze kick. It sighs inwardly and takes shelter behind the reflect for now, hoping that it will, at least, stave off any further assaults on its visage.

Energy: 22%
Sig Mod: A Good Polishing
Status: Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1; Burned (light); scorched and discouraged

Team Blastoise's Reflect: 4 actions remaining

Cauldron fire: extinguished

Ref's Notes
-Blaze kick scored a critical hit.
-Blastoise, is China's sig mod supposed to increase the damage its light-based attacks do by a specific amount? It didn't really matter in this case, but the mod doesn't specify and I'm not sure if that just slipped through the cracks or I'm supposed to make something up.
-Wyvern attacks first next round.

Alright, get your bearings again by using Role Play and taking back your Steadfast. Once you're on the ground, hit it with Mud Slap, then hit it with a nice Sky Uppercut.

Role Play ~ Mud Slap ~ Sky Uppercut

Use Hypnosis, and then Dream Eater (energy). If he's not asleep by the second action, use Hypnosis again, but if he's still not asleep by the third action, use Extrasensory.

Hypnosis ~ Dream Eater@Energy/Hypnosis ~ Dream Eater@Energy/Extrasensory

Round Eighteen: Begin

Rory was still waiting in his poké ball back when Koutus the electrike was on the field. He hadn't seen any of what his predecessor had done to her, hadn't seen the way she'd blanched when asked to do something she had never heard of before, hadn't seen the way she'd panicked and how that panic had just about cost her the match.

But he sure knows what it must have felt like.

The riolu hangs motionless in midair, suddenly nervous and unsure of himself. What on earth is "role play"? It must be nice if it can put him back on solid ground, but he's absolutely certain that he doesn't know how to do that. Maybe... maybe he's supposed to roll around and play? No, that doesn't sound right. What should he do?

The decision is made for him in short order, however. China takes advantage of its foe's distress and hovers in closer, placing itself at eye-level with Rory. Startled by the bronzor's sudden approach, Rory's head snaps up and he stares at her, confused. That's all it takes--the air between them ripples again as hypnotic psychic waves work their way into Rory's mind. All confusion and anxiety fades away as his eyelids droop, and within secons the fighting-type is once again asleep.

The soothing dreams that replace Rory's waking worries do not hang around for long, unfortunately for him. China sends a few more waves this way, this time using them to sift through his thoughts and pluck out anything that seems remotely relaxing. The little energy boost the bronzor gets from the dream eater is just barely enough to mitigate the effort expended to perform it, but it doesn't particularly care; what's important is the way that Rory starts to droop in his sleep, the way his breathing suddenly becomes more shallow as he hangs helpless in th air. One last invasion of his dreams and his vitality is all it takes to wear him out completely. There isn't much visible change in the riolu's condition, but China knows full well that Rory will not be waking up.

The referee can see it, too, and so with the wave of a flag and the trill of a whistle he signals the end of the drawn-out battle. The shrill sound carries across the flat ruins as Blastoise and Wyvern recall their pokémon, each trainer congratulating his partner on a job well done; Blastoise has a little extra bounce in his step as he moves forward to shake hands with his defeated opponent, but both smile amiably anyway before turning around and departing. The ref is not far behind them, clambering onto the back of his red salamence and then flying off in the direction of the bank.

The whistle's last notes die away, and then the city is silent once more.

Sig Mod: A Good Polishing
Status: Special Attack +1, Special Defense +1; Burned (light); that's a little more like it, thank you very much!

Team Blastoise's Reflect: 1 action remaining

Arena Status: The uncomfortable speed-warping aura has disappeared again, leaving the arena more or less normal (if still wet and cold). Hailstones of various sizes litter the muddy ground. The cauldron fires have died down, returning the ruins to their usual dull state.

Ref's Notes
-Riolu can't learn role play as far as I can see, so Rory did nothing on the first action.
-The two dream eaters finished off the rest of Rory's energy, knocking him out on the third action.
-After a series of unnecessarily lengthy delays, Blastoise emerges victorious at long last. He gets $24 for winning; Hippocampus gets 1 exp and Koutus and China get 2 exp (and Hippocampus can evolve since he participated while holding a king's rock). Wyvern gets $9; Ben and Bel get 2 exp while Rory gets 1 exp and 1 happiness point. I get $15 for reffing. Good game, you two.

According to the Pokedex, Riolu can learn it through the HGSS tutor. Unless we're not counting the newest games, in which case, poopy D:

Although I guess it didn't matter anyway since Hypnosis hit on the first action. Great match Blastoise, a victory well earned ^_^ *holds out hand*

No, HGSS moves are allowed now; I checked both Veekun and Psypoke before reffing, though, and Bulbapedia just now, and none of them say that it gets that move. I think the 'dex you're using may be incorrect.

That's fairly strange o.o

Both pokemon.marriland.com and serebii.net have Role Play as a move that Riolu can learn. According to Psypokes, it's taught by the man in the lower right of the tutor's table in the Frontier Front.

I shall have to investigate this, as Serebii is a veeery trusted source.

Anyway, thanks Kratos for donating your reffing skills for our match! <3
