Swimmy and Gwenfair wait impatiently for a change in the weather, peering into the darkness and wondering whether the dawn will come at last. Time crawls by and, most unusually, nothing happens. Not only does the arena remain dark, but the hail persists, eventually prodding Gwenfair into action. The nidoran takes a deep breath, opens her mouth wide, and lets out another long, thin screech that ripples through the air towards Swimmy.

This time the sonic distortion is enough to disorient the remoraid, and Swimmy whistles uncertainly in the darkness, trying to find her bearings. The remoraid begins to gather charge to feed into a thunder wave, but with her head spinning the remoraid is unable to control the nascent attack and only ends up shocking herself. It's not to be the last of the electricity in store for her this round; with her supersonic successfully completed, Gwenfair switches back to the offensive with a shock wave. As before, long tendrils of electricity stab out across the arena, some lancing down into the ocean and thoroughly frying Swimmy.

The unfortunate remoraid floats limp in the water, trying to recover her wits and her strength in the wake of the double electric assault. Unfortunately for her, her next orders call for more of the same. It takes Swimmy a little time to work up the nerve to try another thunder wave, but the sight of Gwenfair calling up more electricity herself is enough to inspire courage, or at least desperation. As before, however, Swimmy proves too fuddled to control her attack properly, and the thunder wave rebounds on her with a nasty jolt. Moments later, another shock wave from Gwenfair drives all frustration from her mind on another wave of pain.

It takes Swimmy even longer to recover from that shock wave than the last two, but at least the jarring attack seems to have driven off much of her confusion. Though still muddied and certainly in pain, the remoraid at last manages to keep her head long enough to forge a successful thunder wave. Gwenfair, who had been enjoying an untroubled round, is unpleasantly surprised when a thin, white bolt leaps from the ocean and into her body, locking her in place as her muscles seize up.

To the relief of both Swimmy and Gwenfair, the hail peters out, to be replaced by an icy rain that, while not Gwenfair's favorite weather ever, is at least better than getting pelted by ice. The night remains as deep and dark as ever, unusually prolonged for the wildly-fluctuating conditions of Screwed-Up Weather Island. Neither pokémon cares to dwell on this for long, though; Swimmy is desperate to get some damage in on her opponent before she faints, and Gwenfair is preoccupied by her sudden paralysis.

Though Swimmy's mind is still somewhat clouded, she does her best to concentrate and gather her psychic energy. A faint blue glow outlines Gwenfair's body, and the nidoran only has time to glance down and realize what's going on before the psychic attack takes hold and she is hurled back across the sand as though punted by an invisible foot. She rolls painfully across the island, coming to rest in a disoriented heap, covered in sand and still stiff with paralysis.

As Gwenfair's surprise is replaced by anger, however, her paralysis gradually recedes, leaving her free to scramble to her feet and charge back towards the water's edge. The nidoran clacks her large incisors, thinking of the indignity Swimmy has caused her and vowing to make her pay. She splashes out into the surf, falling upon the remoraid in a blind rage, kicking and biting at her opponent in a fit of ire. A mouthful of seawater makes Gwenfair gag and come back to her senses. She thought she was attacking Swimmy, but the remoraid is some distance away, watching her warily. In a sudden panic, Gwenfair flounders in the water, fighting her way back to shore.

She's barely had the chance to haul herself out of the water, shivering and sneezing, before an ominous blue glow starts to leach into the air around her. Gwenfair has no time to feel sorry for herself, and she hastily throws up a protect shield to block out Swimmy's psychic influence. The remoraid batters at her defense, but all attempts to catch her in a psychic hold slide away ineffectually.

Swimmy is forced to give up and wait until she is sure that Gwenfair has let her protect go down before she again tries to reach the nidoran with a psychic. As soon as the opportunity presents itself, the remoraid pounces, sending another wave of psychic energy pulsing across the battlefield. She is thwarted by darkness, however--try though she might, she can't seem to draw a bead on her opponent.

Gwenfair has none of the same concerns. Her paralysis remains light and little more than irritating, and her shock wave will strike true no matter where she aims it. The nidoran releases another wave of electrical energy, and Swimmy endures the attack as best she can. She's nearing the end of her strength, and with Gwenfair seeming lively enough despite her paralysis, the remoraid doesn't hold out much hope for a positive end to this fight.

The rain peters out to no more than a misty shower, then stops entirely. The clouds roll back, giving battlers and trainers the first glimpse of the sky they've seen for several rounds. The moon sits at its apex, stubbornly refusing to sink, and a creeping mist soon reduces it to no more than a fuzzy circle of radiance in the sky overhead.

Swimmy groans to herself as the fog rises. As though the dark weren't enough! She has to rely on memory to guess where Gwenfair is, but by chance alone her mental search quickly turns the nidoran up. Blue clouds Gwenfair's vision once again, but though she makes to run outside the field of psychic influence, her paralyzed muscles betray her. She rises slowly into the air, then is slammed viciously against the sand once, twice, and then once more before being left to lie where she's fallen.

As if the psychic interference flipped some switch in her nervous system, Gwenfair finds she is able to move again now. Staggering to her feet, she calls up another shock wave, casting it blind into the fog. Swimmy lets out a wheezing cry as the electricity lances through her body, bringing her to the very verge of losing consciousness. It is ultimately the poison circulating in her veins that brings her low. Unable to endure anymore, the remoraid lets her eyes sink closed and floats listlessly in the water until Blaziking recalls her.

Blaziking has only one pokémon remaining, and he knows he'd better make it a good one. After some consideration, he makes a choice and tosses a pokéball to the sand. Sling the yanma buzzes free in a burst of light, and Gwenfair's sensitive ears twitch as she picks up on the drone of the bug's wings. The nidoran smiles grimly as she takes this to mean that Swimmy is definitely defeated, although the muscle spasms that cause her mouth to twitch as she grins are a reminder that she hasn't come out of the match-up totally unscathed.

In tandem with Sling's release, the night gives way to morning at last. The full moon that had presided over the arena flees for the horizon, and shortly thereafter the sun creeps into the sky, a brief sunrise of pinks and golds giving way to the piercing blue of a hot, cloudless sky as the sun mounts towards its apex. Unfortunately, the unnatural fog that has swaddled the island does not disperse, and the pokémon caught within miss most of the spectacle of the fast switch from day to night. At least visibility is a bit better now that the sun has risen.

Visibility doesn't matter at all to Gwenfair in any case, as she channels electricity through her claws and sends another shock wave racing across the arena. Though a few strands of power would have reached Sling under ordinary circumstances, the yanma has thrown up a protect barrier and the shock wave can only glance off it, sending out sprays of energy sparks wherever it collides with Sling's defense.

Once the danger passes, Sling lets go of his protect and ventures forward through the fog, seeking out Gwenfair. The nidoran needs to be able to see him for his hypnosis to work, so he'll have to find her before he can attack. Luckily, the yanma's flyover soon brings him within sight of his opponent, who is once again struggling against her paralyzed muscles. Gwenfair looks her opponent over grimly as he takes shape out of the fog and finds herself particularly captivated by his large, faceted eyes. As she stares into the glittering depths of the yanma's gaze, a strange feeling of unreality steals over Gwenfair. The fog around her swirls and dances, contorting itself into fantastic and terrifying shapes. The buzz of Sling's wings breaks apart into weird, intertwining strains of music that hum through her bones and the sand beneath her feet. The nidoran sways, blinking heavily, and then finally falls into a deep and unnatural slumber.

With Gwenfair now asleep, Sling can rally his limited psychic powers and steal into the nidoran's mind, tapping into her dreams and quietly siphoning them away. The nidoran shudders and whimpers as her thoughts are stripped from her head, feeding her opponent's strength while she lies in the grip of slumber, unable to defend herself.

Paradoxically, the fog begins to clear even as the sun sinks towards the horizon again, and for a few seconds the sky is clear enough for the trainers to enjoy a spectacular sunset. This fades from the sky even as clouds crowd in overhead. Surprisingly, they fail to produce any precipitation, simply hanging dismally over the arena and obscuring the stars.

Sling doesn't really notice the arena change around him, focused as he is on sapping Gwenfair's dreams. He digs ever deeper into her subconscious, ripping out as many bits of Gwenfair's mental energy as he can reach. Gwenfair struggles and kicks as her dream unravels. Sling's clumsy delving does plenty of damage to his opponent's psyche, but it also provides enough discomfort to knock her awake again. The yanma is forced to retreat from the nidoran's mind as she opens her eyes and groggily rolls onto her stomach. Her head is ringing and she feels horribly drained, but she does her best to shake the feeling off and retaliate with an attack of her own.

By now shock wave is a familiar attack for Gwenfair, and it doesn't take long for her to conjure up the hissing streamers of electricity that sweep out in all directions, catching Sling in their grasp and giving him a mild shock. The yanma is little deterred, though; he knows his foe is close to collapse and keeps his thoughts focused on victory as he swoops in low, psychic energy glowing from his faceted eyes as he tries to send Gwenfair back to sleep.

The nidoran fights the hypnosis attack with all her might; it won't be so easy to send her back to sleep after fooling her once. Unfortunately, she is already tired, and her poor condition leaves her few resources with which to resist to Sling's psychic manipulation. It takes a bit of struggle, but the yanma finally manages to put her under. Her sleep is fitful, but he doesn't need for her to remain dozing for long.

This time, the nidoran isn't totally unable to defend herself while asleep. Her fitful stirring soon grows more coordinated as she mutters to herself. Sling watches carefully, not sure what to do, as Gwenfair, eyes still closed, rises slowly to her feet. He doesn't hesitate to dodge when the sleeping nidoran leaps at him, though. The yanma flies up, and Gwenfair sails past underneath, proceeding to attack a patch of open sand vigorously before collapsing again in slumber.

With Gwenfair's mind left unguarded as she sleeps, Sling is able to once more latch onto her dreams and strip them away until at last the nidoran descends into the dreamless slumber of unconsciousness. Sling hums with satisfaction as Gwenfair is recalled, a little tired but eager to meet his next opponent nonetheless.

The weather is already shifting again as ultraviolet considers her final pokémon choice. The dense clouds vanish as quickly as they came, fading back into the deep indigo sky. This lightens rapidly into a bright blue sky as the sun rises again, and when ultraviolet casts her pokéball out onto the sand, it's a pristine tropical day. The sand and water sparkles in the strong sunlight, and Theresa the duskull couldn't be less enthusiastic. The ghost hisses to herself and glances around the arena, searching in vain for some scrap of shade. The only palm trees are out of bounds, so the duskull hunches in on herself and resigns herself to putting up with the intense light--which, though she doesn't know it, probably won't last long.

The ghost doesn't look the slightest bit sleepy, but Sling intends to have a go at putting her under anwyway. He hovers a bit closer to Theresa, and starts projecting psychic waves into her mind. The duskull finds herself oddly fascinated by the glittering facets of the yanma's eyes, and subtle modulations of his wings' beating adds to the spell. Theresa drifts a bit lower in the air, her body hanging limp, and at last her eye winks out as she falls asleep.

With his opponent neutralized, Sling is ready to go on the offensive. The yanma calls on his limited command of ghostly energy and, reaching into the void, plucks a chunk of it out. A hunk of whirling shadows materializes in front of his face, and with an extra kick of his wings, the yanma sends it spinning into Theresa. The duskull shudders in her sleep and is pushed back a bit by the attack, but that's all.

Theresa shows no intention of retaliating, so Sling has an opportunity to take a break. It's been a tiring few rounds, putting his opponent to sleep and chewing on her dreams, so he's happy to lock into an energy-conserving hover and relax for a few few minutes.

Unfortunately, Theresa isn't slumbering as deeply as she appears to be. Whether it was the shadow ball that shocked her back to wakefulness, or the hot sun bothers her too much for her to keep snoozing, the duskull comes slowly back awake. Sling is surprised to see the flickering of red light inside the duskull's skull, and is astonished when it comes on and stays. Theresa shudders, stretching her tendrils wearily, and casts a baleful look Sling's way. She doesn't appreciate her impromptu nap, and since Sling attacked when she was defenseless, she's happy to return the favor.

Drawing on the chill of the grave that permeates her body, Theresa condenses water out of the air and fires a beam of ice into Sling. The yanma spirals towards the ground until the bright sun and his desperate struggling dislodges the ice from one wing.
