Terrain: Castelia City Square

Castelia City is the gateway to Unova, its port welcoming trainers from around the world. Today those trainers include a fair number from Asber, turned out to compete or spectate on the first round of the League Championship. The city square at the center of Castelia has been reserved for the first round of battle, its broad cobbled expanse providing plenty of room to fight and the central fountain offering a refuge for pokémon that would rather swim than stand. Skyscrapers rise on all sides, framing the scene with the imposing prosperity of Castelia City.

More than just Asber's own trainers have turned out for the battles, though; plenty of curious Castelia residents and tourists mill about the rim of the arena, hoping to catch a few exciting battles. To ensure that they don't go unsatisfied, the regional authorities have generously--and forcefully--provided some of Unova's most powerful pokémon for the trainers to test-drive and show off for the crowd. Unfortunately, with the number of battles that need to be run through before the TCoD League's lease on the square expires, some of the fights might have to be truncated a bit.

For this battle, you will be using a pokémon on loan from the Unova League. Your choices are below. The first player will get first pick of pokémon, and the second will make their pick and then attack as usual. This match will be capped at five rounds. If both pokémon are still standing at the end of round five, the pokémon's health and energy will be added together and the one with the most will be declared the winner.

The pokémon:

Unfezant (F) <Big Pecks>
Escavalier (F) <Swarm>
Lilligant (F) <Chlorophyll>
Conkeldurr (M) <Guts>

Unfezant Please. She will temporarily be nicknamed Tulsa

I feel like this is a mistake, but Conkeldurr.

Start off with Smack Down, followed by Stone Edge and Poison Jab. Use Hidden Power if you can't hit her.

Well Tulsa, as much as I know my luck will NEVER WORK WITH ME, start off with Hypnosis. Next turn Hypnosis again if it failed to hit the first action, Aerial Ace if it did. On the last action don't waste your time with another Hypnosis if he isn't asleep, just Aerial Ace.

Pre-round Notes
This is the biggest event in the ASB year, and the crowds that have gathered seem aware of this. There's an enormous throng of cheering Castelians behind the fencing - those residing outside Castelia tend to opt to watch it on TV instead - and being held back by the combined efforts of a team of League Reuniclus, forming a barrier around the arena. Some guy in a suit comes hurrying up to the battlers, holding two Pokéballs. Each battler takes one, and they send out their Pokémon dramatically: one burst of light forms into an Unfezant - clearly female - and the other a Conkeldurr. The trainers give their commands as dramatically as they can, and the referee - excited to be a part of all this - signals the round to begin.

Round 1 Begin!

With his heavy cement cylinders, the Conkeldurr is far too slow to do anything very quickly. So he's powerless to resist as Tulsa hops up to him and stares deep into his eyes, beginning moving her head slowly from side to side. He finds his own eyes following her, and suddenly he feels very, very sleepy - the result of a mental suggestion that Tulsa's been giving off. He tries in vain to struggle against the slumber, but it's no good - his eyes slide closed, and he loses his grip on his concrete... things, falling forward and snoring gently.

Tulsa observes him with some amusement - he's actually kind of cute when he's sleeping. Still, she's in a battle, and he's his opponent - so she walks slowly away, then turns sharply, running towards him at top speed and slashing at him with her claws, her momentum only adding to the strike. She keeps on running, wheeling around for another strike and carving yet another gash into him. He shifts and growls in his sleep, seemingly going to wake soon.

Perfect Tulsa. I knew you had it in you.

Well, he can't learn Snore or Sleep Talk, and Chill would be completely pointless in his situation, so you can spend the first two actions setting up. Start off with Double Team, with six clones. Next Featherdance to hopefully weaken the effects of those impending Stone Edges. Finally end with an Aerial Ace, unless he's ordered to use Counter, then use Air Slash instead.

Round 2 Begin!

Beginning the second round, Tulsa begins running in tight circles, even then moving at an incredible pace, and she only speeds up from there. For a few seconds, she's a mere motion blur, but then she slows down; when she becomes once again visible to the human eye, she is trailed by six, visually identical duplicates. This rouses an enormous cheer from the crowd, who are apparently mightily impressed. Why? thinks the ref. It's not like you don't see this in most every Pokémon battle.

Next, she and her crowd of clones begin a strange, spinning dance, and within a few seconds they're throwing out feathers in all directions. Many soft, downy feathers drift over the arena, more than a few landing on or around the Conkeldurr. He grins in his sleep, clearly enjoying the soft fluffiness. Suddenly, as if roused by the attack, the Conkeldurr's eyes snap open; he pushes himself, grunting, to his feet, and grabs onto his concrete blocks again.

Tulsa trills angrily, her opponent now more able to attack her. She begins charging round the arena, building up speed; then she charges at Conkeldurr, landing a solid slash on his arm with her beak as she passes. He grunts, and turns to look at... what he hopes is her, looking as sad as he can manage. He begins growling compliments at her, doing his best to influence her thoughts; as it happens, though, he has completely the wrong Unfezant, and the real one is behind him. And it turns out that she's expending so much concentration trying not to listen to his words that she's become careless on her path: one of the Double Team clones runs straight through Conkeldurr, vanishing before it reaches the other side.

Stone Edge is horribly annoying. How can an attack be a projectile but physical based. It baffles me.

Anyways Tulsa I'm going to have to let you take that Smack Down, but use a Taunt first. Next up I want another Hypnosis, as he won't be able to close his eyes and just ignore you thanks to the Taunt. Finish off with another Aerial Ace (never saw that coming, did you), or Hypnosis if the first one failed.

Round 3 Begin!

Tulsa begins the round by shouting out insults, directed at Conkeldurr: "ha ha! You puny excuse for a Pokémon! You look tough, but then you go around trying to compliment me! And now your trainer's telling you to just look away! Are you going to do that, or are you going to fight like a Pokémon?" And, at the same time, she looks deep into his eyes, giving off another subliminal impression to him - this one designed to incite blind fury. It works, too: all Conkeldurr can think about is stomping that pathetic Unfezant into the ground. To that end, he rips a lump out of his concrete... thing, hurling it at the nearest Unfezant. It flickers and vanishes, the illusion destroyed.

Tulsa grins - as much as that's possible with a beak. She knows she's got him right where she wants him. She looks into his eyes directly, the other illusions standing around idly, and begins moving her head gently from side to side. Conkeldurr recognizes it as another Hypnosis, and knows he should look away - but Tulsa's words are still ringing in his ears, and he can't tear his gaze from her. Much to his detriment, as it were - he very quickly succumbs to sleep, toppling gracelessly over forward.

Her beak-grin only widens as she observes her sleeping opponent - the battle's only going to be another couple of rounds, there's no way he'll win. She once again builds up some momentum before delivering another slash to her sleeping opponent. She comes to a halt, observing him: he's not going to last much longer.

Round 4 Begin!

While it seems that the trainer's commands for his Pokémon to WAKE UP are having all of no effect, they're actually filtering through to it on a subconscious level; Conkeldurr is straining against his sleep, though the Hypnosis seems strong enough to keep hin snoozing for a while longer. Tulsa, on the other hand, has no such concerns: she's wide awake, and willing to prove it. She charges round, building up speed for her strike: as she passes, she slashes at him hard, leaving yet another open wound on his side; the second she moves away she wheels around for another strike, and then again for another.

This last proves to be enough to let Conkeldurr break out of his hypnotic trance: his eyes snap open and he pushes himself slowly to his feet. Once he grabs onto his concrete blocks, he finally does something about the Double Team: his eyes take on a decisive red glow, and suddenly the entire arena is bathed in a red light, inciting gasps of awe from the audience. One of the Unfezant becomes wrapped in the same light, but all four of the others flicker and vanish; even as the glow in Conkeldurr's eyes and around the arena fades away, the glow wrapped around Tulsa remains, irritating her with its red-tint.

Round 5 Begin!

Knowing that what she does now will decide the match, Tulsa is determined to make this count. While Conkeldurr's still growling and trying to tear a rock out of the ground, she runs round in circles, building up as much momentum as she can; then, taking flight, she hurtles towards Conkeldurr at a massive speed. She deals an enormous gash across the side of his face, tearing it open nearly from top to bottom; it's far too much for him to take and he keels over backwards, decisively knocked out.

Each trainer recalls their Pokémon and then hands the Pokéball over to the official who comes to retrieve them. Then the referee comes up to the battlers, deals with the formalities - like giving Ampharos his first-round victor's medallion, and giving both battlers their money - then, with a flash of green light, they teleport away, leaving the battlefield with feathers sweeping themselves up into a neat pile and the hole in the ground repairing itself - while the Reuniclus just look on and grin.
