Ah, it feels good to ref again. Sorry for the terribly-long wait (apologies won't cut it will they D: ).

DQ Time: 5 days

Banned moves: OHKOs, Chills 5/Pokemon, 1 direct healing/Pokemon, Perish Song

The Basic Stage is simply that; a plain expanse of mottled white tiled floor. A large pond of water waits on the side, for Water types to use and stay in. Above is the sky, where for now, the sun hovers far above. There are no special effects, and the field is completely flat, the tiling reaching about a hundred feet square. The tiling isn’t very strong, and can easily be broken for access to dirt for moves such as Dig and Mud Slap.

Growling, Darkrai rose from its humiliating, hunched position and attempted to loosen its shrieking muscles by dashing circles around Death Canyon, flashing the computer-generated Pokemon a rude, spiteful gesture as it sprinted past. Death Canyon attempted to follow its opponent’s movements, but its tracking system proved inadequate and it soon gave up. Instead, the digital duck sat there, beeping irritably and wishing that it had the hand necessary to replicate the gesture Darkrai had waved at it. Eventually Darkrai slowed down, but it was accompanied by nine other identical nighttime menaces, all wearing the same superior smirk.

Death Canyon reared back in surprise and fear – would all ten of these legendaries converge upon it and tear it pixel by pixel? Fearing for its beautifully-rendered graphics, the Porygon quickly charged up the familiar bug-typed beam and hurled it at one of the Darkrais in a blaze of blue and red. The chosen Darkrai simply vanished upon contact, and the nine remaining ones laughed maniacally.

All of a sudden, the Darkrais clenched their fists, which began to glow with a faint brownish shroud. They closed in on Death Canyon just as rapidly, dealing a brutal three-hit combo for 10% damage before the poor Porygon could block. It garbled in pain; only one of the nine strikes was real, but those punches packed quite a bite. Its confidence was slowly but surely going downhill.

For the umpteenth time Death Canyon let loose with a bright red-and-blue beam, but yet again the Signal Beam only dissolved another clone. Several cuss words appeared on the edges of the Porygon’s vision as it fumed. In response, Darkrai stuck out its tongue and lunged forward to hit its opponent one, two, three times, each blow coated with the fighting energy that was so corrosive to Death Canyon’s skin.

Despairing now, Death Canyon summoned the bajillionth Signal Beam of the battle (Darkrai was really getting tired of that move) and picked the right-most legendary as its victim. Predictably, as Death Canyon’s odds of hitting the real Pokemon were still quite slim, the attack’s target proved to be a mere mirage as it evaporated amidst a bout of mocking laughter.

I'm pretty sure I haven't use any sleep-related torture on it yet. For a Darkrai, this is unforgivable.

Use Dark Void, then Nightmare, then Dream Eater. If it uses Magic Coat or the first Dark Void misses, just stick with Brick Break for the rest of the round. Also if I'm completely wrong about Nightmare working on Normals swap that for Dream Eater :v

Darkrai let out another peal of laughter, but it was malicious rather than mocking. The very sound of it chilled Death Canyon to the bone, and the feeling that something was terribly wrong seized every sensor in its digital body. Each of the seven Darkrais raised its arms, still cackling with glee, and began to glow with a dark, red-rimmed aura. Suddenly the ground around Death Canyon was stripped away, to be replaced with a void of deepest black. From that hole, deformed arms reached out, and hellish specters reared their heads. These nightmarish shadows quickly closed in on Death Canyon, forming an unbroken, pitch-black dome. The dome writhed as if in horrible pain, and snarls and shrieks emanated from the dimensional tear. Every once in a while a limb would break the surface, only to be quickly dragged back down. Darkrai’s cruel laughter mingled with the frightening noises generated by the Dark Void.

Before long, Darkrai grew too weary to hold the dimensional tear open, and the shadows withdrew into the ground with a final scream. Much to the legendary’s astonishment and chagrin, however, Death Canyon, though terrified, was very much awake. Darkrai kicked the ground in frustration as he, too late, registered the faint, greenish sheen of Protect.

Darkrai muddled over its options for a moment. Its previous attack hadn’t missed, per se, but Death Canyon was not asleep. Finally, it shrugged, clenched its fists, and surrounded them with a faint shroud of fighting-type energy. Death Canyon beeped in alarm as its seven opponents advanced – the legendary was supposed to be flailing around with ineffective attacks! It was still confused about its trainer’s miscalculation when it was struck by two more powerful punches. The third hit the ground beside the Porygon. Darkrai pulled its fist back and rubbed at its knuckles while hissing at its embarrassing miss.

Death Canyon reeled from the pain that the repeated Brick Breaks were dealing, but it supposed that it should be grateful for Darkrai’s imperfect aim. Speaking of aim, though, the Porygon was determined to make its next shot count. It fine-tuned its visual capabilities until six of the seven Darkrai paled to a translucent mist, then focused its aim on the real Dark-type Pokemon. Several cursors locked onto its target, granting Death Canyon supernatural aim at the cost of some of its energy.

Completely unaware about the happenings in Death Canyon’s visual systems, Darkrai shrugged at its opponent’s inactivity and immediately moved in for another Brick Break. This time, all three strikes hit, and Death Canyon sagged in the air amidst panicked beeps, clearly growing weary of battle. In retaliation, the Porygon began to charge a huge, unstable ball of electricity. Darkrai backed away, clearly not liking the looks of the attack. Death Canyon took no notice of this and continued to struggle with the Zap Cannon. Twice the premature attack nearly slipped from its grip, but the digital duck finally managed to create a sizeable sphere of energy, which it launched at Darkrai. The sphere gave a mighty twitch as it was released, so that Death Canyon was fairly certain that it would’ve missed had it not been for its earlier Lock-On. As it was, the Zap Cannon flew straight and true at its target, seizing the pitch-black legendary in a searing grip of electricity. Darkrai shrieked as its muscles convulsed and the electricity burned its skin. The clones, looking as horrified as the real Pokemon, flickered and vanished as its concentration broke. The pure electric energy faded away after a few moments, but its effects lingered, as Darkrai crouched on the ground, still twitching.

Alrighty, let's finish this, Canyon!

Do a one-action Skull-Bash-Last-Resort combo! Hit the Darkrai with all your might!

However, the Darkrai Protects/Detects, do nothing and scoot the combo down an action.

If the Darkrai Substitutes, use as many one-action Skull Bashes as you can and don't do the combo at all.

If the Darkrai tries to put you to sleep on the first action, Teleport the heck outta there.

Legendary it was, but Darkrai knew when it was weakened, and right now it felt gravely threatened. With a massive effort, it managed to regain control of its muscles. The pitch black Pokemon crossed its arms in front of it defensively and took a low stance, bracing itself for any attack while a shimmering green shield surrounded it. Recognizing this shield as impenetrable, Death Canyon clicked in annoyance and spun its legs around a bit, waiting for its opponent’s defense to drop.

It did not take long. The shield was taxing to hold on to, and soon it fizzled out of existence to leave a vulnerable, panting Darkrai. Seeing its chance, Death Canyon lowered its head and gathered explosive amounts of normal-type energy in its skull. The process took time, however, and Darkrai ruthlessly took advantage of this. Straining against its twitching muscles, it extended an arm towards its opponent and focused pure corrosive energy in the area around the digital Pokemon. Reality itself began to disintegrate around Death Canyon, allowing creatures from dark dimensions to reach through. Its concentration faltered and it began to beep frantically, trying to escape, but the creatures held tight. Shrieking with glee, they hauled the helpless Pokemon into their home dimension, claws and teeth bared as they prepared for their first meal in centuries. A giant spider scuttled forward to take first blood; it sank its huge, disproportionate fangs into Death Canyon, injecting otherworldly venom which swiftly incapacitated any being. Unfortunately for the other creatures, however, they would taste no mortal victim. The gap in reality healed quickly, cutting off access to the corporeal world amid cries of frustration. Death Canyon remained, but the venom still worked its effects, and the Porygon lay in a fitful sleep.

Darkrai sat through this whole spectacle, more grateful than ever for its power over nightmares. When it was at last confirmed that Death Canyon was asleep, the legendary took a step towards its victim, ready to plunge into its dreams – only to fall forward as its muscles clenched in rebellion. Darkrai cursed loudly as it rolled over, struggling futilely. It was no use, however, and in the end it lay still in an attempt to calm its spasms.

Even paralyzed, though, Darkrai had a profound influence on Death Canyon’s mind. The legendary’s very aura penetrated the Porygon’s subconscious, manifesting as a hellish nightmare. Death Canyon twitched in its sleep, its mutterings betraying intense fear and agony. Only Arceus knew what the Pokemon was dreaming of.

Darkrai smirked at the incapacitated Death Canyon, certain now of its victory. Once again extending its powers over sleep and dreams, Darkrai latched onto the mind of its slumbering foe. Death Canyon was dreaming of what seemed to be viruses: malformed bug-like creatures, their bodies flickering like static, surrounded the digital duck and were slowly but surely eating away at it. Though Death Canyon struggled frantically, there was no escape, for it was ensnared by strings of numbers. Darkrai spent a moment taking in the nightmare, fascinated by the effects its sheer presence had, before draining the very essence of the dream, causing great fissures to appear in the landscape. From these fissures crawled more viruses; Darkrai heard Death Canyon scream before he retreated from the Porygon’s mind.

Darkrai frowned. It was shaken from Death Canyon’s dream far too early, as if he had not properly anchored itself in the Porygon’s subconscious. Much more than that, though, was that the legendary’s entire body was stinging, as if it, too, was being assaulted by the viruses. Darkrai was shaken from his troubled thoughts when Death Canyon started to stir. Surely it could not have woken up so fast? The Porygon’s eyes were still closed, though, and Darkrai soon recognized the ominous muttering and stumbling movements as a Pokemon in the grip of Sleep Talk. Death Canyon’s expression, already tormented from its nightmare, grew even more desperate. Its body suddenly took on a blinding white aura, and it threw itself against Darkrai, thrashing violently, jabbing forcefully with tail, legs, snout. The pitch black legendary stumbled back, too shocked to protect itself. Dozens of small cuts opened in its skin, pierced by Death Canyon’s sharpened edges, and had Darkrai been of a lighter colour, many bruises would be visible. At last, Death Canyon backed off, panting; the attack had taken a lot out of it, and it collapsed back onto the ground.

The Last Resort left Darkrai on its last legs. Desperate for more health, it reached into Death Canyon’s mind once more, forgetting entirely about the pain that had afflicted it last time it tried to consume the dream. As if to make up for the last attack’s partial failure, this Dream Eater was much more effective; Darkrai had an iron grip on Death Canyon’s brain and refused to let go until some of its wounds were healed. Darkrai took yet more chunks out of the landscape, gnawed at the strings ensnaring Death Canyon, even scooping up some of the bugs and eating them. The legendary’s efforts were for naught, however, as the fiery pain in its gut became too much for it. Finally giving into injuries, Darkrai crumpled to the ground, out cold.

Crazy Linoone, who had been chewing at her claws nervously throughout the entire battle, gave a great whoop of joy as Darkrai collapsed. She ran across the arena and tackled Death Canyon to give the Porygon a bear hug. Death Canyon woke up with a startled snort, then realized its formidable adversary had fainted while it was asleep. It, too, celebrated the victory, though more quietly than its trainer.

Behind trainer and Pokemon, Darkrai’s image was flickering; within moments it was completely gone. Panels rotated to hide the fragile tiling and bring back the sturdy walls, and all the lights began to turn off one by one, revealing the original room before darkness closed. The mechanical dragon who had led Linoone to the room reappeared and hurried her out, stating that repairs were desperately needed, especially for the chasm that had opened in the ground from repeated Rock Slides.

Terrain notes
The arena has reverted back to the default empty, non-descript room.

Final notes
The first Dream Eater was a glancing hit.
Dream Eater damages the user if the foe is affected by Bad Dreams or Nightmare.
Sleep Talk generated Last Resort (you lucky Linoone, you).
The second Dream Eater was a critical hit.
The damage sustained from the second Dream Eater knocked Darkrai out.

The battle is over and Crazy Linoone is the winner. Close game, people! Monetary prizes are not awarded for simulator battles, but Death Canon gets 1 EXP and Death Canyon gets 2 EXP. As both Porygon were holding an Upgrade, both can now evolve.

Hrmm, does that mean you have a free slot now, or did someone already reserve a spot?

wait what

did I just win

Death Canyon, come 'ere. We're going to go build RNGod shrines. A lot of RNGod shrines.

Blazhy and Mike, thanks for the great battle!

There are two slots. Currently there is one slot open. Negrek vs. Zapdos is still ongoing, though going very slow, as the replacement referee seems to be busy; he does plan to ref it eventually, though.

Hey, a question-if I bring in my Smeargle, can I have him Sketch the legendary's signature moves? :3

Anyways, doing a double battle against Latios+Latias on Southern Island.

You like money, right?

... oh hm. I'll have to ask Negrek about that.

Anyway, thread will be up in a bit. FYI it will be a separate thread in the main section: Linoone's battle was supposed to have its own thread, too, but it started here before I could iron stuff out.

EDIT: Actually wait; what difficulty do you want this battle to be on? I assume Easy, based on the money, but I want to make sure.

On another note, I just realized that double battles give more EXP but still cost the same... I'll let Griffin's battle go through, but until I work out the new prices with Negrek, only single battles are available. ... not like there will be any more slots available, but just in case.
