As the TCoD League championship moves on from Castelia City, the next stop is Unova's recreation hotspot, Nimbasa City. There are all kinds of attractions to choose from: the ferris wheel, the sports domes, and even the battle subway, perhaps a natural choice for a pokémon tournament. But let's be serious--these all pale into comparison to the real reason you'd want to visit Nimbasa City. After all, you haven't really lived until you've stuck a moustache on your Arceus and then chuckled to yourself as you watched the creator of the pokémon world prancing and rolling across the stage next to a patrat wearing cowboy boots.

Yes, the league is taking to the stage and setting its next round of battle to music. The battle takes place on one of the four Music Hall stages (Stardom, Forest Stroll, A Sweet Soiree, or Exciting Nimbasa), selected at random. The different backdrops have no effect on the battle. In addition, trainers may dress their pokémon up in any way that they wish, although costumes will also have no effect on the battle (even if they include things like weapons or props that would ordinarily be useful in a fight). However, they can also choose the music that will play during each round, and different tunes will have different effects on the pokémon battling.

Battles for this round will begin with the posting of each player's active squad as usual. After that, however, each player PM's their choice of pokémon, a description of that pokémon's costume, and their selection of songs and their effects to the referee. Each player chooses five songs and comes up with effects for them (appropriate effects are described below); these will be played in order, one during each round of battle, and the player who is ordering first in that round is always the one who will have his or her song playing during that round. Once the pokémon and songs have been received from both players, the referee will randomize which player gives commands first, then posts what pokémon each player will be using and the song (and the effects it will have on the battle) that will play for the first round--the first song on the list for the player who orders first in the first round. From that point forward, commands proceed as normal, with the referee posting the next song and its effects at the end of each round. If neither pokémon has been knocked out at the end of ten rounds, the winner will be determined by totaling each pokémon's health and energy, the same way it was during the previous round.

Any sort of music can be specified as the song for a given round, but please don't pick something offensive. Don't make me regret not restricting you to songs without lyrics, that is. A song can have a variety of effects on the battlefield, whether raising the power of some kinds of attacks for that round to healing status ailments. However, they must affect both pokémon equally--you can't have only your pokémon get an attack boost, for example. However, it's fine if you specify an effect that, due to the nature of your pokémon, will not affect the opponent the same as your pokémon; for example, if you specify that both pokémon will become severely poisoned but send out a steel-type, then your pokémon will not be poisoned even though your opponent's might. Effects that would ordinarily last multiple rounds (like trick room, weather attacks, or status conditions), if caused by a song, will last only for that round, and you can ask for weather effects even though pokémon won't be able to create them with their attacks. Effects always come into play at the beginning of the round, before either pokémon has the opportunity to act; thus, if a song will cause both pokémon to be burned, they will start out the round burned, and the burn can't be prevented by any of their attacks (i.e. you can't block a first-action burn with a safeguard).

Songs are restricted to causing damage/energy swings of no more than 3% (e.g. "All fire attacks cause 3% more damage after all effects" or "All fire attacks cost 3% less energy after all effects) and causing stat boosts/reductions of no more than two levels. They may also have only one effect: they cause hail to come into play or they increase fire-type attack damage by 3% or they cause both pokémon to fall asleep or they cause both pokémon to become paralyzed, etc., not any combination thereof. They also may not prevent the pokémon from acting in a round, e.g. "neither pokémon can use damaging attacks this round" or "neither pokémon can act this round", ban one or more attacks for the round, or alter the pokémon's movepools.

If you don't want to go to the trouble to figure out a set of songs for yourself and/or don't want your pokémon to fight in costume, then just let your referee know when you choose which pokémon to send out. They will come up with a list of randomly-selected pokémon-related songs with associated effects and then PM them back to you, so that you retain the advantage of knowing what will happen on each one of "your" song rounds. (Or, if the referee doesn't want to do that either, they can PM me and I'll provide the music for that player instead.)

Well, Mendatt is back now, so let's start.

blazheirio889 will be using Yukianesa the Froslass, wearing a very fetching twirly mustache, and decked out in a kimono and obi sash. Mendatt will use Guess the Petilil, wearing a small tiara and a green and white skirt with a fern pattern.

Mendatt attacks first, and the song is Concerto A Minor. It'll cause non-damaging moves to have their effects doubled. If the effects cannot be increased in that manner, their accuracy is doubled instead.

I appear to have got matched up with one of the more experienced ASB battlers here. This could be a problem. Might as well give it a try anyways...

Use Sleep Powder to start with, so we can set up some stuff without risk of getting attacked. If Yukianesa uses something which would prevent the effect of that, Energy Ball. If Yukianesa uses Protect, use Growth. After that, use Leech Seed if she's asleep, use Sleep Powder if she isn't asleep, and use Growth if Yukianesa's move would prevent you from using Sleep Powder or Leech Seed. Finish off with Toxic, or Growth again if you can't.

Sleep Powder/Energy Ball/Growth ~ Leech Seed/Sleep Powder/Growth ~ Toxic/Growth

Medium Substitute to tank the Energy Ball. Then, Snatch the Growth. End with Sing, which should have perfect accuracy thanks to the song.

If by some devilry the Energy Ball kills off your sub, give me another Substitute of the same size and follow through with Sing.

Substitute (15%) ~ Snatch/Substitute (15%) ~ Sing

The crowd cheers loudly as both trainers finally take their places at each end of the stage, and the shining stardom backdrop slowly descends. Mendatt is looking somewhat nervous at being paired against such an experienced battler, although the fact that she is also a giant, mechanical dragon doesn't help. Not that he discriminates or anything.

There is a loud clunking sound as Blazhy flings a Pokéball unceremoniously onto the stage, and Mendatt quickly follows up with one of his own. Blazhy's Pokéball bursts open to unleash Yukianesa the Froslass, while Mendatt's reveals Guess the Petilil. Both Pokémon blink rapidly as the bright lights of the stage overwhelm their vision, and the roar of the crowd grows in volume.

The tiny little plant is wearing a small tiara dotted with some sparkly plastic emeralds, and a small scrap of fabric is draped round her mid-section to form a skirt. She looks up warily, blinking her beady eyes against the bright, artificial lighting, and turns to face her opponent. She is not pleased to see that it's one of those horrible ice types.

Yukianesa calmly surveys her tiny foe, showing not a hint of nervousness. This isn't her first tournament battle, and she's ready to show this new-comer how it's done. She seems to be decked out in the usual Froslass attire, with one exception; a twirly moustache. It makes her look quite nefarious in Guess's opinion, which does nothing to improve her confidence. Nevertheless, the Petilil shuffles forward, steeling herself for the important battle ahead.

As the referee signals for things to begin, the chosen song blasts loudly across the stage, and there is much cursing to be had before he figures out the volume control.

Round one

Yukianesa waves her arms, and a cluster of snowflakes begin to form in front of her, twisting and winding around each other. Guess winces as she sees the hated snow, but it quickly becomes obvious that Yuki is using it to build, not to attack. The swirling torrent of ice twists through the air, slowly becoming thicker and more solid as it begins to take the rough shape of a Froslass. Finally, it settles, and Yuki gently breathes some life into the ice statue. The substitute’s hollow eyes light up with a bright white light, and it floats forward, ready to protect its creator.

Guess warily looks at the icy creation, and quickly decides a sleep powder isn’t a good idea. She awkwardly unfurls her leaves around her tiara, forming a glistening orb of bright green energy, then nudges it towards her foe. The earthy projectile tumbles forward, leaving a winding trail of jade in its wake, then collides with the substitute in a bright green burst. The doppelganger quivers as a chunk of its icy flesh is destroyed, leaving it looking noticeably diminished. It holds up well enough though, and it’s still fairly recognizable as a Froslass imitation.

Guess looks at the considerable dent she managed to make in the doll, feeling a little more up-beat as she sees the damage she caused. Yukianesa doesn’t appear at all concerned though, much to Guess’s disappointment. The Froslass simply floats there idly, occasionally tugging at her moustache and grinning. She looks pretty goofy, but Guess isn’t really in a laughing mood, and the ice type’s lack of action just makes her even more jumpy. She takes a deep breath and uncurls her leaves, then focuses on boosting her body mass. However, she’s finding the process unusually difficult. She frowns, struggling to concentrate, but she just can’t seem to get past that mental block.

Feeling a little panicky, she opens her eyes and glances at Yukianesa, and sure enough, the ghost appears to be up to something. Yukianesa has her arms stretched out towards her foe, and an ominous shroud of black energy is shimmering around her hands. Guess gives a startled squeak as Yuki abruptly lashes out, swiping at her with the blackened aura. What little boost Guess managed to achieve is immediately torn away from her, and as the black aura returns to Yuki, the Froslass eagerly takes the benefits for herself.

Guess’s leaves droop as she sees Yuki’s growth spurt, and she can’t help cowering down a little. Her opponent always seems to be one step ahead, much to her dismay, and it’s pretty disheartening. On the other hand, it’s still early on in the match; she has plenty of time to make up for it. Guess’s leaves furl out again as she tries to egg herself on, and she decides to have another go at bulking herself up since that substitute is still in the way.

Yuki remains one step ahead however, and the ghost swiftly swoops in towards her tiny foe, her arms outstretched. As Guess pauses and warily looks up, Yukianesa clears her throat and promptly begins to sing. Her song is an eerie one; a haunting tune to a ghostly lullaby, but there’s a strange beauty to her words as well, and Guess finds herself listening intently. Yuki was a little worried that the music would interfere with her singing, but to her surprise, the tune lends itself perfectly to her voice. It actually seems to enhance her singing, making it even more alluring and enchanting than she could ever have hoped. There’s no way that Petili can resist this breath-taking performance!

Sure enough, Guess finds herself completely captivated by the wonderful sounds, and she can even feel all her anxiety and worries melting away. She feels so relaxed and at ease right now, and the temptation of falling asleep to this beautiful lullaby is too much to resist. She yawns widely, and her leaves slowly begin to curl up once again as she settles down on the stage and closes her eyes. Yukianesa draws out the closing note, then bows to the equally captivated crowd. Some of them are looking a little drowsy themselves, though Yukianesa is hoping that’ll wear off, as she certainly doesn’t want them to miss her next act.

Exactly as planned!

We're doing excellently. Guess can't do anything while Taunted and asleep, so we're free to do what we want. Two Dream Eaters (health) and one Ice Punch should have us somewhere around the damage cap. Oh, and wait before using Ice Punch, if possible; we don't want Guess to wake up in time to execute an attack, yes?

Dream Eater (health) ~ Dream Eater (health) ~ wait, then Ice Punch

... Well. I knew I was forgetting about something.
Anyhow... Well. This is... Not really turning out well. Umm. Well. You're winning right now! Technically. Yeah... So...
... Because of a minute limitation of your movepool, the only thing you can use is Chill. Well. Normally minute. A bit more important now... I suppose you might as well use that, though... If you wake up before the round is out, use Giga Drain in the hopes that you can regain some of your health.

Round two

As the previous round’s song draws to a close, the next one quickly starts up, and this time, the volume is cranked up a notch. Yukianesa perks up as the tune booms across the hall, filling her with energy and motivating her to spring into action.

She’s also delighted to see it’s effectively cleared the crowd of any drowsiness, and they’re now back to cheering with even more enthusiasm than before. She grins as her eyes glow a bright pink, and she reaches out with her mind to meddle with the Petilil’s dreams. The content expression on Guess’s face soon fades as she feels the ghost’s presence in her head, but she’s currently helpless to stop it. She cringes and cowers down, emitting the occasional whimper as Yuki deftly plucks at the essence of her dreams, converting them into a nourishing little boost for herself.

Yukianesa’s grin widens as she feels her lost strength returning, and she eagerly swoops towards Guess as she prepares to nab another snack. Guess begins to toss and turn as Yuki invades her formerly pleasant dreams again, quickly turning them into a jumbled heap of distorted images as she tears them apart and uses them to heal herself.

Guess’s formerly restful nap has quickly turned into a troubled, fitful doze, and the little plant is twisting about madly. She certainly looks to be on the verge of waking, so Yuki decides to take advantage of her opponent’s immobile state while she can. Yukianesa drifts towards her and surveys Guess’s fearful expression, then promptly pulls back her fist. A freezing aura radiates around it as she prepares to strike, but she has no intentions of attacking just yet, and instead remains poised in her attack pose.

It’s difficult for Yuki to remain patient though; the crowd is egging her on and the invigorating music is roaring in her ears, but she just sneers at the snoozing plant and holds on for a little longer. As the song gradually begins to wind down, Yukianesa suddenly tenses, and abruptly lashes out with her ice-coated fist, striking Guess in the face. Guess gives a sleep addled squeal of pain as she is rudely awakened, and sent flying backwards to land in an undignified heap. She rolls about in confusion, then awkwardly scrambles back up again, quivering all over from the chilling blow. She blinks her eyes rapidly and shakes off the crumbling ice as she tries to regain her bearings, but it's ultimately too late for her to do anything right now; the referee is already preparing to play the next song.

Battle notes

- Guess woke up at the end of the third action.
- I usually don't have taunt affect sleeping Pokémon (but the effects would come into play when they wake up), so Guess was able to chill.
- The next song is Sonata in G Major: Non-damaging moves take 3% less energy.
- Mendatt attacks first.

Hmm... I was hoping that field effects would bypass the sleep. Could we confirm with Negrek if Guess could have chilled? Though it's only 7% energy I might wanna take this into account for future plans.

Edit: Also, if you have the effects take place after the Pokemon wakes up, should Guess be taunted? Not entirely sure since the song's gone and all, but...

"Effects always come into play at the beginning of the round, before either pokémon has the opportunity to act;"

That answers the second question, but I'm not sure about the first.
Can I delay my commands until Negrek answers?

Pokémon that are asleep don't respond to taunting; since Guess began the round asleep, she wouldn't have fallen under the song's effects and therefore would be free to chill.

Because the song's effects are constant over the course of the round, Guess would have been taunted immediately upon waking, but since she woke up too late to make an action, it didn't matter anyway. Because the song's effect was "all battlers behave as if under the effects of taunt during this round", neither of them will carry the status over into the next.

Okay... Start out with a 15% substitute, unless Yukianesa uses Sing again, or another move that would prevent you from following this turn's orders. In that case, use Protect. After that, if the substitute's still there, use Leech Seed. If it isn't, use Sunny Day. Follow that with a Sunny Day if you used Leech Seeded, or a Synthesis if you used Sunny Day.

Substitute(15%)/Protect ~ Leech Seed/Sunny Day ~ Synthesis/Sunny Day

Fine, then. Blizzard before the sub appears (perhaps float closer to Guess to increase the accuracy, I dunno), then Taunt on the second action. Finish off with Ice Beam to break the sub. However, if Taunt missed, try again.

Blizzard ~ Taunt ~ Ice Beam/Taunt

I believe I am, at this point, going to point out "or another move that would prevent you from following this turn's orders."

Yes, but that's why I commanded Yukianesa to wait. Guess won't know what Yuki will do until she does it; by that time, Guess should have created the Substitute.

Okay... Wouldn't Guess wait until she knew what Yukianesa was going to use, since the order in effect depended on that?

I would dig up some examples but I'm unable to remember any off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure it'd go like this: Guess observes Yuki, who's doing nothing, and will then conclude nothing will disrupt her round's orders and proceed to create the Substitute. After the Substitute has been created, Yuki Taunts.
