Somewhere outside Asber, there lay a nice garden with pristine green grass, small colourful flowers, and strong saplings dotting the landscape. Quiet scuffling could be heard among the grass as rodents foraged for seeds and berries, and the racket of Pidgey fighting over a birdhouse filled the air. In the middle of the garden stood a large gazebo, completely unmoving and innocuous.

The peace could not last, however, as the owner of the garden had stupidly allowed two Asber trainers to duke it out on her property – no doubt she had no idea how fond Asber trainers were of wanton destruction. As two humans and one mechanical dragon strolled onto the arena, the chirping grew uneasy, and the rodents froze. The inhabitants of the garden grew even more alarmed as the Pokemon were sent out. They had little problem with the tiny Drilbur – he would just kick up dirt and leave holes in the garden, after all; nothing too serious – but the Quilava was the subject of many nervous stares. As the flames on her back leapt up, the bird Pokemon squawked forlornly as they gave premature goodbyes to the birdhouses, which would certainly fall victim to an all-consuming fire very, very soon.

Cyndra took a deep breath, inflating her chest with air, as the flames on her back roared even higher. The bird Pokemon hiding in the bushes screeched in alarm – surely the Quilava wouldn’t destroy their beloved garden so fast! Several Spearow and Pidove hid their quivering heads under their wings as Cyndra breathed out, thus missing the anticlimactic results: only a small, floating ball of flame was produced. Curiously, the fireball was a bright blue and, as Big Daddy was about to discover, very, very hot. The Will-o-Wisp struck the mole Pokemon in the side, searing skin and flesh and leaving a very tender spot. Big Daddy cried out in misery and pain.

There was little he could do about his burn, though, so he began to carefully sharpen his claws, trying to move his side as little as possible in the process. The Drilbur squeaked in pain a few times as his burn rubbed against his arm or a stray branch or something, but after a few moments his claws were satisfyingly sharp and shiny. Big Daddy flexed his oversized paws, ready to deal some damage.

Cyndra was not finished with her fire attacks, though. Her flames nearly tripled in size as she let out a low, menacing howl. The temperature of the air rose steadily. Bird and rodent Pokemon alike scattered, convinced now that Hell itself had paid their garden a visit. Big Daddy stood where he was, uncertain, until he realized that the beginnings of a great flame were being stoked right underneath him. He squealed and darted to the side, ignoring his protesting feet, just as an awesome pillar of flame shot into the sky. The towering inferno hissed and spat and crackled, but its fury was wasted, and Cyndra yowled in irritation at her near miss. Meanwhile, Big Daddy cowered a few meters away from the Inferno, paws covering his head. Wave after intense wave of heat buffeted him, and while it was terribly uncomfortable he figured it was much more preferable to actually being engulfed by the hungry flames. After a few moments, Cyndra became too exhausted to keep up the attack, and the flames fizzled away, leaving a black, ashy circle and dozens of traumatized garden-dwellers.

Once the Inferno died down, Big Daddy cautiously peered out from under his paws. Confirming that all was well, the Drilbur surrounded himself in a veil of dirt and began to run at his opponent at top speed (not very fast). About two thirds of the way there, he leapt into the air and dove at Cyndra claws-first, spinning like a top all the while. The Quilava made a respectable attempt to dodge, but she got a shoulder full of sharpened Drilbur claw anyway. She hissed in pain as her flesh was sliced and a shower of dust lodged into her new wounds.

Cyndra grimaced at her next command, but when she was Zora’s Pokemon it was a tactic she would have to employ sooner rather than later. Strange, though; Zora seemed to be convinced that she was attracted to a female Venonat she had battled before. Perhaps she was just meant to seduce every Pokemon alive. After shaking dust from her fur, Cyndra began to spew all sorts of nonsense while struggling to keep a straight face: I didn’t think such a small Pokemon could be such a brave, fearsome fighter! You really are something! I really don’t have the heart to hurt you, my warrior. That Inferno? I charged it slowly so you could dodge. My trainer doesn’t have to know! Slowly, Big Daddy relaxed as the Quilava’s words sank into his brain. This Pokemon wouldn’t hurt him, right? She seemed right friendly. So friendly, in fact, that he couldn’t find the heart to hurt her, either. The Drilbur sat there contentedly and stared into Cyndra’s eyes, apparently completely forgetting that she had tried to fry him to a crisp mere minutes ago.

Though Cyndra was pretty sure Big Daddy wouldn’t be attacking her anytime soon, it couldn’t hurt to be safe. She hunkered down in the grass and covered her head with her paws while a green shield flickered to life around her. It was pretty apparent that she was skeptical that any danger was about, though; the fire-type kept peeking out from under her paws and blinking at Big Daddy with huge eyes.

The Drilbur all but melted at Cyndra’s display. What a beautiful creature! Though he knew he was far below her, Big Daddy still felt compelled to show off his own talents. Puffing out his chest, he began to wave around his oversized claws, carefully grinding them together to make them even sharper and shinier. Twirling around a bit and letting his claws catch the light, Big Daddy tried to put on a show for Cyndra, and though she clapped, it was fairly obvious her appreciation was not genuine. Fortunately for her, Big Daddy was too busy admiring his shiny new weapons to notice.

Cyndra saw no further need for her shield (there wasn’t a need for it in the first place, really), so she let it drop. Then, her demeanor abruptly changed; her back fires leapt up again and she pounced at Big Daddy with a snarl. The Drilbur flinched – why was she attacking him? – and Cyndra took the opportunity to bowl the small mole Pokemon over, then scratch and bite at him while he was off-balance. The Quilava couldn’t push herself to make full use of the attack, however – she just wasn’t feeling all that frustrated. Exasperated, sure, maybe perplexed, but not furious. Even so, Cyndra’s claws and teeth left several marks on Big Daddy’s skin, and even more on his heart.

Slowly, Big Daddy picked himself up and dusted himself off. He tried to catch Cyndra’s eye, but her expression was unreadable. While the Frustration hurt, he was sure that she’d done it for a reason. Maybe it was a show of her strength? Yes, that must be it. In that case, he’d better show his power, too. He slashed at the ground in front of him, covering himself in dirt, then leapt at Cyndra with his claws folded over his head. The Quilava looked up to see something that resembled a dirty, spinning seed pod flying at her. Big Daddy struck his target in the side this time, causing a more respectable wound than last round thanks to repeated claw sharpening. Cyndra staggered and hissed in pain as more dust flew into her cuts and doused her flames.

Big Daddy puffed his chest with pride, certain that he’d impressed Cyndra, but he deflated quickly when he saw the enraged expression on her face. The satisfaction rapidly changed to horror as Cyndra’s flames suddenly swelled to engulf her, surrounding her body in a spinning curtain of heat. The fire Pokemon tackled Big Daddy once again, squashing him to the ground, and the fire singed his skin before he reflexively swiped at Cyndra to make her back off.

The heat made Big Daddy more aware of his burn than ever, and he carefully checked his side before glaring at Cyndra. Was she lying when she complimented him so generously? Certainly she couldn’t get away with hurting him so much. After a brief mental debate, the Drilbur once again coated himself with dust and charged at his opponent, ripping yet another wound on her shoulder. Cyndra yowled in pain, clearly affected by the repeated super-effective attacks. Though the cuts were not deep, the dirt inside them was supremely irritating, and she winced whenever she flexed her shoulders.

Irritated that Big Daddy could fight so well even with his nasty burn, Cyndra decided to cripple him even more. She breathed in deeply while mysterious chemical reactions took place in her fire sac, kindling a fire twice as hot as usual; the resulting mote was white-blue and zipped across the arena at an unsteady pace. Big Daddy eyed it warily. He remembered the previous Will-o-Wisp and how deeply it had burned, yet it was quite pretty. Maybe Cyndra created this one for him to stare at, and intended for it to miss him? Sure enough, the little fireball veered clear of Big Daddy and instead collided with a tree trunk, disappearing in a puff of blue-grey smoke. Cyndra barely managed to hide her snarl of frustration.

Still unaware that the Will-o-Wisp was meant for him, Big Daddy looked imploringly at his trainer. What kind of gentleman attacked a lady, especially after she had put on a display for him? Nevertheless, his trainer was unsympathetic, and after a while the Drilbur sighed and tossed a storm of dirt into the air. Cyndra cringed upon seeing the familiar sight, but even though she knew what was coming, her reflexes weren’t fast enough to allow her to dodge her opponent’s claws. The Quilava’s other shoulder was ripped up and she let out a yowl of pain.

Quite furious now, Cyndra surrounded herself with a curtain of flames and ran towards Big Daddy, screeching something about lucky attraction rolls. Uncomprehending, Big Daddy cringed and made himself as small as he could, apologizing profusely. Cyndra paid no heed and rammed into the curled-up mole, searing his skin and sending him bouncing across the lawn. Big Daddy squealed in terror, only uncurling himself when he realized the danger had passed. Sure, he had hurt Cyndra, but the fury on her face when she counterattacked led him to believe that maybe she wasn’t as nice as he’d thought.

Maybe he should attack her once more, just to show Cyndra her place. Again Big Daddy launched himself at Cyndra, bringing with him a healthy dose of dust. Yet another wound was opened in the Quilava’s skin, and it was almost immediately showered with debris that increased the pain tenfold. Cyndra responded with another irate howl and surrounded herself with a towering blaze, much hotter and fiercer than before. Big Daddy cowered. Maybe he’d attacked her one too many times, and there was no forgiving him. He closed his eyes and accepted what punishment Cyndra would deal him.

Searing agony engulfed the Drilbur’s entire being as he was coated with fire. With a growl, Cyndra tackled him with exceptional force, throwing him painfully against a thick tree trunk. Big Daddy lay there, miserable – it seemed as if he had screwed up his chances with the beautiful Quilava. So crushed was he that he couldn’t even think to attack. Instead he lay on the ground, wallowing in despair.

Snarling, Cyndra shot Big Daddy one last glare before tucking her head into her chest and covering her ears with her paws. Then she kicked off with her hind legs to pitch herself into a roll, folding her legs into her body as soon as they left the ground. The tumbling Quilava barreled into her opponent, though she hadn’t picked up much speed, so Big Daddy merely stumbled.

Even though he knew he ought to catch Cyndra, Big Daddy just sat in the grass, rubbing the foot that the Quilava had rolled over. It seemed that nothing he did could appease the fiery weasel. Maybe she was lying when she complimented him so generously. Oh yes, that had to be it. His misery quickly turned into anger. Didn’t really have the heart to hurt him, huh? Liar. Big Daddy stood up again, claws extended threateningly, and waited for Cyndra to come rolling at him again.

With her head tucked against her chest, Cyndra couldn’t see Big Daddy’s aggressive stance, and so was completely unaware that her spell over him was fading. Leaning to the side, she made a wide turn and rushed back at the mole Pokemon. She struck Big Daddy with more force this time, causing him to fall on his behind.

Cyndra cackled with glee as Big Daddy cried out in shock, but her giggle was cut short as pain lanced along her side. Big Daddy had extended his paw, the tips digging into the Quilava’s skin, which split open as she rolled by. Even when Cyndra had rolled away, the cuts continued to burn; a slight nauseous feeling confirmed that his claws had been laced with poison. Thankfully, the nausea faded quickly – she had escaped lasting effects this time.

Turning again, Cyndra stole a quick peek at Big Daddy to determine his location. His expression unnerved her; even curled up like a potato bug, Cyndra could feel his glare boring into her back. Nevertheless, Cyndra charged at the Drilbur. She was going at quite a clip now, and even though Big Daddy braced himself against the ground he was thrown back a meter or so upon impact. Despite the power behind the blow, Big Daddy’s natural ground-type cushioned the blow, so he came away with only a small bruise on his stomach.

By now, Cyndra was too far away to attack. Instead, Big Daddy waited for her to turn and ran towards her, then stabbed at her as she rolled past. Cyndra gave a screech of pain as her side was torn up; the wounds oozed blood, leaving a sticky red trail on the grass. Big Daddy stared at the wounds intently, frowning a bit when they did not turn purplish around the edges. He had failed to poison her yet again.

Cyndra, still rolling around like a panicked Sandshrew, heard her trainer’s commands, but once the ball got rolling it was difficult to stop. She tried to stick a paw out to slow herself down, but she only got a scraped pad in return. Mentally shrugging, the Quilava plowed onwards; she’d stop soon enough. Deciding to make good use of her momentum, Cyndra made a beeline for her opponent and rammed into him. As she was going at a very respectable speed, she had no trouble sending her opponent flying a very respectable distance. Despite his natural resistances, Big Daddy couldn’t suppress a cry of pain as he was struck, and again as he landed.

To his dismay, Cyndra still wasn’t done rolling. She was going faster than he thought possible now. Concentrating fiercely, Big Daddy followed his opponent’s movements with his eyes, then struck out at just the right moment. His oversized claws managed to grasp a foreleg, and Cyndra gasped in pain as claws dug into her flesh, but the Quilava was going too fast to be stopped by the grip. She zoomed onwards, slipping out of Big Daddy’s hold with minimal grace: further wounds were created when the foreleg was roughly yanked away. The now-shredded foreleg was terribly sore, and Cyndra cringed. Meanwhile, Big Daddy frowned at the fact that he’d failed to stop Cyndra, though the Quilava was now going a lot slower.

Worried by her foreleg, Cyndra didn’t feel confident enough to plant her paws on the ground to stop her rolling. Instead, she opted to hit Big Daddy one last time. She thumped against the mole, though this time she just made him stagger, then bounced off and lost all her momentum. Sighing in relief, Cyndra rose to her paws, wincing as he placed her injured forepaw on the grass. All that rolling had made her a bit dizzy.

Of course, now that Cyndra wasn’t zipping back and forth the garden, she was a much easier target. Big Daddy ran up to her and gripped her with both paws. His sharpened claws dug into her skin and she shrieked. This time, however, she knew not to struggle, as that would just make her wounds worse.

Instead of trying to struggle free, Cyndra twisted her head around. Big Daddy glanced suspiciously at her; his expression changed to sheer horror as he saw the large fireball forming in the Quilava’s mouth. A plume of fire washed over Big Daddy, flooding him with a terrible heat and causing his skin to flake and peel. He gave a little shriek and writhed uncomfortably, but utter loyalty to his trainer kept him his claws rooted to Cyndra’s pelt. He was told to hold onto her; he would not let go.

Finally, Cyndra had to catch her breath, and the last of the flames flickered in the air before disappearing. The acrid scent of smoke filled the arena, and a few Pidgey squawked disgustedly. Big Daddy cautiously opened his eyes. Cyndra was clearly weakening, her body marked with cuts and wounds, many of them crusted with dirt. He’d have to finish her off quickly if he wanted to avoid another face full of flames. Catching sight of her damaged forepaw, Big Daddy quickly adjusted his grip so one paw remained on her midsection, keeping her in place, while the other clenched around her leg and squeezed. Cyndra gave a high-pitched wail of agony. The claws dug deep into her wounds, and deeper still, until they scraped against bone. She could hardly move her foreleg, the pain was so intense. At last Big Daddy loosened his grip, though she still could not escape. Cyndra merely settled with glaring daggers at the mole Pokemon.

There is a large patch of grass which has been utterly burned. The Pokemon inhabitants of the garden fear for their lives.

Final notes
Zora of Termina attacks first next round.
When a Pokemon is commanded to use a multi-turn attack, the duration must be specified, or the Pokemon will keep going for the full duration. So Cyndra was not able to stop and use Flamethrower until the last action.
Since Cyndra was going so fast, I didn’t think Big Daddy could stop her entirely, though he lowered the base power of Rollout down to 60.
The first and third Crush Claws lowered Defense.
