Terrain: Tree of Dreams
Many of the TCoD League's trainers are taking a protracted vacation to Unova, traveling around the region and dropping into different cities to watch or battle in the ongoing league championship. There's one group that's been taking a vacation of a different sort, though--a select few who elected to venture into Unova's Dream World rather than take the normal route around the Unova region, with the promise of a battle at the end of their excursion and a place in the league championship if they should emerge victorious.
There are many paths through the Dream World, but they all end at the same location: the Tree of Dreams, an incredibly ancient plant whose boughs are draped with the dreams of pokémon from all around the world. It is thought that those who bring an offering to the tree's base may be able to change their dreams into reality, but there will be none of that today. No, today there will be only battling, the opportunity to change dreams of glory into reality for those who were unlucky enough to miss the earlier championship registration period.
The area around the base of the Tree of Dreams is a simple grassy field, offering nothing in particular to help or hinder any battler. However, since this is, after all, the Dream World, pokémon will have no trouble accomplishing astonishing feats like conjuring tidal waves from nowhere or dropping spectral rocks on their foe. There are no restrictions on the kinds of attacks that can be used here, save those imposed by the league.
The Dream World was the image of a nature-lover’s haven: the sun shone, birds chirped, groundlings foraged, grass rustled. The environment was pristine, yet strange in a wild, fascinating way. Instead of a solid expanse of land, the vista was broken into large chunks, firm blocks of earth levitating as if by magic. Bridging these islands were translucent rainbows, see-through but quite solid and certainly safe to walk on. These islands and bridges sprawled across the sky in a spiral pattern, emphasizing the largest isle in the middle. Easily five times as large as the others, half of it was taken up by an enormous tree. On the tree were all manners of mosses and flowers and vines – and most peculiar of all, at the ends of some of the vines and branches were baubles of some sort.
Despite the vastness of the Dream World, the trainers found the Tree of Dreams quite easily. Apparently what they say about all paths leading to the Tree was true. While the referee marveled at the odd baubles hanging from the tree, which were filled with shimmering mist (she seemed to be easily captivated by shiny), the trainers roamed the island and those surrounding it, looking for a Pokemon to aid them in their quest for glory. Skylark followed Hawke stealthily as she picked her Pokemon so he could send out a counter. Sneaky, sure, but it wasn’t frowned upon by the ASB officials (the referee was too distracted by shiny to notice anyway).
Hawke certainly took her time to decide, but at long last the trainers came back with their Pokemon. Hawke’s Gastly was chewing contentedly on a Pecha berry, while the trainer coaxed her closer to the battle arena with three other berries. Meanwhile, Skylark was followed by a rather greedy Sableye: she was carrying a pile of at least ten berries, staggering slightly with the load. The three Asberians waited for the Pokemon to finish their meals, then whispered to them. They nodded eagerly. Both Gastly and Sableye gave wide, toothy grins; free food in return for a battle? That sounded excellent.

Sableye tilted her head, studying her opponent intently with those unsettling, glittering eyes. Undaunted, Gastly cackled again and began to swing her tongue back and forth like a moist, pink pendulum. Recognizing the signs, Sableye quickly covered her eyes with her hands, while a shield of pure energy formed around her. The psychic signals Gastly was sending with her now-glowing eyes bounced futilely off the barrier. Realizing that she was wasting her time, Gastly pouted, while Sableye let the shield drop and snickered.
The Sableye species were a strange bunch: some dallied in battle, while others moved lightning-quick. This Sableye appeared to be one of the faster ones. Before Gastly could move, Sableye traced her fingers through the air, ghostly radiance dancing at her fingertips. Swaths of purple and black and blue danced towards Gastly, sparkling as they caught the light. Thoughts of battle swiftly escaped the gaseous Pokemon’s mind. She was giggling now, the sounds communicating childish joy rather than malice.
Gastly’s new trainer gave a frustrated shout. She ignored her. She could spare some time to play with these lights, right? Though she kept swatting at them with her tongue, the ghostly radiance kept dancing away. Gastly followed – and rammed right into the Tree of Dreams. She bounced off, dazed, then hissed angrily at the lights. They’d tricked her. She’d make them pay.
Meanwhile, Sableye was snickering at how easily Gastly was distracted. The gaseous blob’s back was turned: a perfect opportunity to strike. She ran silently towards her opponent, preparing to lash out with a claw to send her tumbling to the ground – and Gastly whipped around and flew straight at Sableye, faster than the eye could follow. Sableye gave a little yelp of shock and braked hard, hoping to avoid the attack, but to no avail: still moving bizarrely fast, Gastly swept by the purple gremlin, dealing her a harsh blow with a strong tongue.
Sableye very nearly lost her balance, but managed to stick out an arm to break her fall. Angry now, she spat a vicious insult at Gastly, whose expression changed from triumphant to livid. Sableye could barely hide a grin as Gastly charged at her. At the last moment, Sableye sidestepped the attack and stuck out a claw, causing Gastly to crash into it and stumble. The gem-eyed ghost followed up with another slash to her opponent’s vulnerable back. A sizzle was heard as dark energy ate at Gastly’s essence, and she shrieked in pain. Sableye would live to regret that blow.
