here. Basically, it's a rocky terrain; ashen filled grass can be found on the Jagged Pass, where the battle starts. The trees and such are also covered with soot, and there is little to no water unless provided with a move like rain dance.
Speaking of soot, doesn't there have to be side effects from battling and breathing in volcanic ash? Why yes! Spending time in the burnt up grass or doing other things (determined at ref's discretion) can cause a number of side effects. There's about a 25% chance of it occuring when you do such dangerous things, and the effects include
but are not limited to:
A 25% chance of getting lightly confused.
A 20% chance of getting lightly poisoned.
A 15% chance of getting mildly confused.
A 15% chance of getting mildly poisoned.
A 10% chance of wasting an action coughing (like a flinch).
A 10% chance of rustling up the ash and smoke, causing the effect of smokescreen upon all pokemon.
A 5% chance of getting both mildly confused and lightly poisoned.
Up at the volcano, where the problematic substance is given off, the chance of such things happening is a flat 25% each round. If it is determined that it will occur to a pokemon, the action in which it will happen is randomized.
Pokemon native to Hoenn use 1% less energy per action, unless that would make the energy cost of a move zero. Pokemon found on the Jagged Pass use 2% less energy per action (this does not stack with the Hoenn bonus and has the same rules) and have the chances of being affected by the ash lowered to 15%. Poison type pokemon have the same 15% chance of being affected as the Jagged Pass pokemon; it's a different type of poison than the typical venomous kind and therefore a pokemon can be both ash poisoned and normal poisoned. They act the same, however.
Other: Only fully unevolved pokemon may participate; single stage lines are banned.

More self-assured now, Malice recited hideous incantations quickly and confidently. The power of ancient, vile curses swirled in the air around her, tied to her by her chanting, waiting for a command. Malice jerked her head towards Constantine, and the curses immediately rushed to the Piplup, eagerly surrounding him and overloading his body with corrosive ghost-type energy. Constantine yelped as a dull pain throbbed through his entire being, aggravating the sting of his burn and causing paralysis to yank harshly at his muscles.
Though Constantine was starting to flag from his injuries, he was not about to take the attacks sitting down. He struggled to his feet, fighting against his unresponsive feet, then braced himself against the ground and gave his water sac a sharp squeeze. A staggering amount of water immediately gushed out of his jaws. Malice was blasted away by the torrent, the sheer force making each droplet’s impact sting. This time, Malice managed to wiggle out of the Hydro Pump, though the attack was almost spent anyway. The Shuppet looked at herself and scowled. She was totally soaked, her cloth-like body heavy with moisture.
Eager to take revenge, Malice began to chant once more, directing foul spirits towards her opponent so they could wreak havoc on his spirit, which was weakened by burns and paralysis. Constantine felt the familiar awful feeling descend upon him once more; then abruptly, it felt like a giant hand had seized him and was crushing him slowly. His paralysis worsened, gripping his throat and lungs so that he could scarcely breathe.
By now Constantine was in a dire state, about to keel over from the repeated Hexes and Thunders he had been subject to. His pitiful Aqua Ring hardly helped at all. In response to the emergency, the true power of the water-type was unlocked within the Piplup, manifesting as a deep blue aura around him.
When Constantine was freed from the Hex, he was still having trouble moving. It took a massive effort for him to squeeze his water sac hard enough for a second Hydro Pump, but the effort was well worth it: the blue aura seemed to lend its strength to the stream of water, enhancing its pressure and deadliness. Malice barely had time to shriek before the water reached her. She felt like she was hit by a truck. A moment later, another impact came as the Shuppet was slammed against a rock wall. There she was pinned mercilessly, doused with a high-pressure jet of liquid that made her body scream in protest. The rain overhead, though gentle, somehow only worsened the pain until it was nearly intolerable.
At last Constantine’s entire water sac was emptied. The Hydro Pump dwindled to a mere trickle and Malice was allowed to drift to the ground, dazed. It took the Shuppet a moment to collect her bearings; then, desperate to avoid taking another hit like that, she immediately began casting another curse on Constantine. Hopefully it would drain the rest of his vitality. Unfortunately, Malice had overestimated Constantine’s stamina. Though the Piplup was so weak he could barely whimper, he somehow managed to stay on his feet. Bravely, Constantine squeezed his eyes shut and endured the Hex.
Malice could not keep her attack going forever, and as soon as Constantine felt the Hex fading away, he took a menacing step forward, ready to unleash a final torrent of water that would end the match – only to fall flat on his face as his muscles clenched in rebellion. His eyes widened in panic and disbelief –
now, of all times? Meanwhile, Malice breathed a huge sigh of relief.

… but man, Torrent jacks up BP like what. I asked Negrek to look over similar abilities and consider toning down the boost, because 1.5x is pretty ridiculous for ASB standards.
Constantine was paralyzed on the third action.
