More information than you needed to know:

Jet won't get to 100% health because you've attacked him since then, and also arena damage. He was at 18% health when he started rest (since cold damage is officially added at the end of the round, and also whatever), so he heals 82% damage in total, split into three actions 28/28/26. So he'll use another 13% energy to complete that last action.

Oh yeah, so that Quick Attack strategy works for you but not for me. ;~;

Okay, we can work with this, though. I'd prefer not to have a half-dead Absol, but what can you do. Kayne, Snatch that Chill first of all, then Taunt Jet when he wakes up. Finish off with Detect. If Jet is not Taunted on the third action for whatever reason, use Taunt again to make sure it sticks.

Arena: Cold Storage

Driftveil City has plenty of attractions: its picturesque lighthouse, its bustling marketplace, and, most important of all to trainers, its official gym. Surely any of those would have made fine sites for a battle and a worthy introduction to Driftveil's culture.

Instead, trainers and spectators find themeselves huddled, shivering, in a glorified walk-in refrigerator.

As it turns out, it's rather expensive to rent out Nimbasa's music hall for a few crazy trainers to have their battles in. And it's even more expensive when you have to pay for repairs after a couple of those trainers smash a hole in the stage and set fire to the orchestra pit. Over budget and facing a suddenly-inflated insurance premium on whatever location it decided to rent, the league found itself too strapped for cash to secure one of Driftveil's more desirable locales.

There was no way they could simply call off the battle, though, so they made do. And, with a bit of effort, they even managed to wrangle a local into teaching their battlers a unique bit of Unovan battle-style, the rotation battle. He's a heartbreaker... His name... Charles...

In a rotation battle, each player sends out three pokémon from the get-go, though only one fights at a time. Up to once per round, at any time, a trainer may choose to "rotate" their pokémon, swapping the one in battle for one of the two in reserve. Now, though the arena manages to avoid the iciest parts of Cold Storage, the floor's a little slick, and the pokémon being rotated in will need to take an action to get its footing. The act of rotating therefore takes a full action, but is otherwise unpenalized. A pokémon that is rendered uncapable of leaving the field under its own power cannot be rotated out.

The frigid conditions of Cold Storage are going to sap a bit of the fun out of this new battle style, though. It's so freezing that all pokémon in battle will lose 5% health and energy at the end of each round, whether or not they're currently in battle. Ice types, of course, love the cold and are immune to this effect--too bad they happen to offend Charles, who can't stand their shameless aping of his aloof and distant attitude. At the end of each round, any ice type actually in battle has a 10% chance (each) of becoming taunted, tormented, confused, or paralyzed as a result of suffering through Charles' intense, furious, and yet carefree stare for the entire round.

For these battles, the first player to post will post all three pokémon that they will be using, as well as which one will start in the active position. The second will then do the same, as well as issuing commands, and the battle will proceed as normal from there.

Round Five

Kayne nods. He may be exhausted, but he’s not down yet, and for a pokémon, that’s enough. A black aura flares up around his body, and he stares calmly at the murkrow, who shifts and settles down comfortably. Or at least, that is the murkrow’s intent. Black tendrils lash out and sink into the murkrow’s body. Kayne lets out a long, steaming breath, slightly relaxing himself.

The glow around Jet’s body fades and he wakes up. He still has an electrical burn, and is shivering hard, but he’s otherwise back to normal. Or at least he would be, if he’d had a more relaxing rest rather than a short period of intense healing. But he’s still in a much better condition than Kayne any way you look at it, and a glance would tell anyone looking that Kayne’s in a bad condition. Jet flies up with a screech, then angles himself downward and tucks in his wings. As he dives, he glows brighter and brighter until he recklessly collides with Kayne. Jet’s beak digs deep, but he’s not ready for the force of it, and he bounces back out, skidding across the floor.

Kayne turns his eyes on the murkrow and goes stiff.

…turns out that these Asberian pokémon sometimes have something special about them. An albino swinub’s one thing, but it’s just a colour change, ultimately, like a shiny pokémon, except you can more easily breed for it. The black mark on Kayne’s leg has a bit more to it.

The mark flashes red, and Kayne’s eyes glow the same colour. Wisps of darkness come off his body like smoke, or another one of his snatches, but it’s not quite the same. Darker and thicker. It plays some interesting tricks with the light, too; his shadow twists and grows even though Kayne stays still, and Kayne himself has exaggerated natural weapons. His fangs and claws lengthen, but it’s his scythe that really draws the eye. It gleams like cold steel, but the shine is entirely unnatural, as are the serrated edges that promise to tear rather than slice flesh. He growls and turns his glowing eyes on Jet. Jet immediately flutters off and lands on a metal container, safely out of reach, completely uncaring that the metal seems to burn into his scaly feet.

A chuckle rumbles in his throat and he speaks in growls and snarls. His words can’t be made out, but his tone is unmistakeable: cocky, mocking, and full of contempt. Jet shifts on his perch as the words come spilling out of the absol’s mouth, and his talons dig into the ice covering the metal. But he’s tired, as tired as Kayne, and attacking now is unwise.

In the end, Jet can’t help it. He screeches and leaps off the container, tucking in his wings and pouring energy out of his skin once more. Kayne simply closes his eyes and focuses, then, at the last moment, throws himself to the side. His claws catch easily on the ice, but he’s gone just far enough for Jet to miss him, and Jet barely manages to avoid contacting the floor with anything more than the tips of his talons.

Jet squawks and whips around to face Kayne once more. Kayne meets his eyes, snarling.

Future Sight will have absolutely no effect on a Murkrow, so, uhm. Awkwardly waddle around (apparently Taunt has no effect on non-move actions!) using as little energy as possible, then Chill the last action.

Round Six

Jet snaps his beak shut and wheels around to give his trainer a piercing stare. Being ordered not to attack when under taunt, just because his trainer says some rule or another allows that, doesn’t appeal to him. No consideration for his feelings. Conflicting emotions converge on his face as he turns to land, but then he spots Kayne once more. He shivers, then lets out a scream.

Disregarding his trainer’s orders completely, Jet leaps at Kayne and flails madly, beating at Kayne with his wings and talons and beak. Each hit is weak and has no technique driving it at all, and he hits Kayne at painful angles, but in his fury, that’s all he can do. Kayne barely reacts, but he manages to pull away.

He gives Jet an inscrutable stare. A pink light underlies the already-red glow of his eyes as he gazes into the future, but when the pink fades, so does the red glow. His aura fades away, leaving him as just a normal, exhausted, thoroughly-beaten absol, and he collapses onto the floor.

His trainer recalls him, murmuring something about getting a nice rest.

Round Seven

Yukianesa glides over the ice and toward Jet, bearing the same attempt at a cool, aloof smile that ice-types are prone to. She clutches a nevermeltice to her chest as though showing off her resistance to the cold. Her other hand extends in front of her and melts.

More water pours from her hand than normal ice melting, however. The water freezes upon contact with the floor, but rather than pooling around her feet, the water freezes in Yukianesa’s likeness, from the feet upward. As the topmost crystals on the substitute’s head forms, Yukianesa’s watery hand reforms into a hand and solidifies back to normal.

Jet is too worked up to consider this important and lunges forward beak-first. The ice doll jumps in front of its creator, letting Jet’s beak tear through its chest. Jet backs away and glares at it, but the anger dissipates. The muscles in his body lose their tension, and he nearly collapses on the ground in his eagerness to rest. But a black aura flares up around Yukianesa and extends black tendrils that sink into Jet’s body. Jet shifts and tries to find a more comfortable position to relax. Yukianesa’s aura fades for only a moment before she unleashes another snatch, stealing away Jet’s last hope of relaxing.

Almost as an afterthought, the air flashes, and a blast of energy strikes Jet on the head. But he doesn't even notice.

With the cold and darkness sapping away his energy, Jet can do nothing but let them take him. It’s probably better than dealing with an ice-type, anyway.

Right, let's throw up some rocks. Literally! Yuki, use Pebble Jet. If Snowveil tries to Protect, Detect, or is otherwise inaccessible by some witchcraft, then... ah, hell, Double Team for three clones. Froslass why is your boosting movepool so shallow. If Slash tries to come in, smack him with Pebble Jet anyway.

If Pebble Jet was not used last action, use it now. Otherwise, freeze your opponent's butt off with some nice Ice Beam. If Light Screen is up or Amnesia has been used, serve our enemy a cold one with Ice Punch. Also use Ice Punch with as little energy as possible if, for some reason, your opponent is Protecting or Detecting or is inaccessible (not including Substitute; those things should be destroyed on sight). However if your opponent is in the ground, see if you can't hit them with Ice Beam. If you don't think you can, don't bother.

End with a frosty Blizzard. If your opponent is in the ground, see if you can't use Psychic to lift them back out. And Light Screen, I guess, if your opponent is Protecting, Detecting, or otherwise inaccessible.

Round Eight

Snowveil skids across the ice to Jet’s former position. She’s a lot more mobile than she was before, but there’s still a bit of jerkiness in her movements. Still, Yukianesa, despite having not taken a hit yet, doesn’t look much better. She retches, and brings a hand up to her mouth while the other clutches at her stomach. Then, in another rather unorthodox move, Yukianesa projectile-vomits on Snowveil.

It’s actually weirder than it sounds. Rather than the usual colours of vomit—which varies, but tends to stay in a reasonably predictable range—the whole water gun-like stream is a brilliant yellow-green. Grey, brown, and black chunks, too, smacking and scouring Snowveil even through her thick fur, and some of the usual ghostly mucus-like ectoplasm. Where they land, the chunks prove to be rock and grit, but the liquid’s something a bit stranger than just stomach acid. A large patch of fur is ripped from Snowveil’s now-reddened skin, left vulnerable to the cold. Snowveil squeals, but beneath the fur covering her face, her eyes flash red. A beam of red light sweeps across the arena, like one of those TV lasers, and scan Yukianesa and her substitute along with everything else.

Feigning indifference, Yukianesa points a hand toward Snowveil. At the tips of her fingers, a single pale blue ball, nearly the colour of the ice on the floor, grows and grows. Then it explodes, loosing a thin beam of ice energy right on Snowveil’s new burn. A thin layer of ice covers the burn, but Snowveil ignores it and charges at the substitute. On contact, the substitute shatters and disappears into a thin mist.

If Yukianesa gives damn, she doesn’t show it. Instead, she flexes her fingers and points them at Snowveil again. Snow and ice chunks and wind burst forth from her hand, all the fury of a winter storm, but her shot goes wide, and Snowveil charges a second time. This time, though, her eyes are intent. She leaps at Yukianesa, screaming for all she’s worth, and slams down on the froslass’s chest, reckless and barely under control. She flails to get her tiny limbs back under her so she can push herself off, and her harsh breaths come out as visible puffs. Yukianesa picks herself up. But her eyes are flickering away from her opponent, as are Snowveil’s.

For just a moment, the two battlers’ eyes meet mine. Of course, they can’t hold it long, and they avert their eyes right quick, glancing at the icy floor beneath their feet. Yukianesa holds herself a bit more stiffly than before.

I’m a heartbreaker… My name… Charles. S’only natural that they can’t stand up to me.
