Arena: GIGANTIC COCOON
On the rocky cliffs of the Asber coast, underneath a ridiculous overhang of nondescript stone, a bunch of bugs have decided to join together and make a GIANT COCOON that hangs and swings dangerously low over the crashing gray waves below. The huge, white-silk orb is oblong in shape, with huge, wiggly support beams sticking out of the top. Bugs, from anorith to yanma and joltik to scolipede, crawl across the surface, bringing food and water and other necessities. It's a rather nice community, honestly, and like all good communities it must inevitably be the site of an ASB pokémon battle.

The cocoon's inner parts, about the size of a few three-story buildings laid on their sides, on top of one another, are divided in such a way that the very bottom, where the battle takes place, is about as big as a mansion. The floor is interwoven silk, very soft and damp, and you can see the ocean below through gaps as big as a guy's head. The ocean, by the way, is about thirty feet away at the bottom of the floor's curve, and can easily fuel water-based attacks. Kakuna, cascoon, and other hibernating bugs coat the walls like sleeping ornaments, and spires of supporting silk spring from the ground to the ceiling, like trees. Small rocklike balls of the stuff also cover the ground, and can be used as projectiles if needed. Also, this section of the GIGANTIC COCOON is big enough for weather moves to work easily, and if Sunny Day is used it makes a bunch of League Volbeat use Tail Glow and Flash all at once on the ceiling, to be inclusive.

Once every round, during a random action, a swarm of any given unevolved bugs (caterpie, joltik, etc.), led by their fully-evolved form (a butterfree, a galvantula, etc.) will attack, dealing 4% Bug-type damage to the battlers but giving each on a random berry in addition to its other item. These berries stack, but will be taken by Blastoise for his shop at the end of battle. They will also leave one of their number behind on each trainer and the referee, as adorable spies. No two pokémon will swarm twice unless there are no more new ones to be chosen, and due to strange pokémon cruelty laws no one can technically remove one of the little buggers from their person by force. (Why would you want to, though?)
Arena status: Spinarak, Wurmple, Weedle and Sewaddle have been attached to the trainers and referee.

-----

The battling bugs started to show clear signs of fatigue as the battle dragged on. Neither of them seemed likely to last too much longer.

As always, their mutual paralysis undermined their battling efforts; again, they were immobile for all of the first few minutes of battle.

When they started to move again, Nickolaus interrupted an enemy charge with a powerful electric blast. It left spots of her hairbunch charred and briefly disoriented her movement; however, she got over it quickly, picking up her foe and unleashing venom all over his face.

Much to her dismay, though, the Joltik's immunologic system had been at extensive warfare with the toxic spores from earlier. Neutralizing a smaller threat from the same source was nearly effortless.

At that point, as in the other rounds, there was a swarm. However, instead of a coordinated attack, there just seemed to be a large army of Skorupi roaming leaderlessly and ocasionally taking a potshot at the battlers. Some of them clung into the humans as well, but for no particular reason, as they had no commanding insect to relay anything to. As the others, they left berries -- one bright pink and very sweet, which was immediately consumed to put an end to hole stuck shenanigans, and other deep red, horribly spicy, but that was unknown to its willing taker.

Both of the fighters were distracted plenty by this turn of events, but the tick Pokémon regained focus faster and caught his opponent right off guard for another voltaic discharge. Furious, the Venonat moved to attack, unleashing a flurry of chemical powder. Before these could land, however, their target rapidly ate up one of his berries, screeching at its fierce sourness. When the Venoshock landed on his fur, it quickly kicked up painful reactions before it was bounced off by nutrients in the eaten Berry, being hurled right back at the attacker with forceful impact.

It was the straw the broke the gnat's back. Leper Dot stumbled backwards and, for a change, landed on solid ground. Her macro-eyes seemed to become darker and duller in colour as her micro-eyes closed in unison.

Not in the slighest enjoying the idea of having the first man (creature?) down, Blastoise Fortooate made his next sendout. Next up was a humanoid critter with bright orange fur, appearing exceptionally relaxed -- a demeanor that stood in antithesis with the wild flame at her backside. She'd have to watch out for that one, lest the GIGANTIC COCOON be burned down.

Comamnds given, the battke recommenced.

Celeste spared her foe no quarter -- right from the word go, she leapt away, fist raised. Of course, this was all for show -- she only actually struck a blow after her target had braced for trouble.

This tricky rhythm of the new challenger threw Nickolaus off. Before he could put his mind back to his commands, he was under attack again -- the Chimchar had quietly approached from behind, and after that, started blow out a red-hot breath from her mouth.

The Joltik managed to get away from the scorching heat of the enemy attack for a second, but he knew it wasn't for long -- his irresponsive muscles were in no condition to get into a race. Just then, however, he felt a strange vibe come from his Occa Berry, as though it had suddenly become tastier and juicier looking. His subconscious took over as he started to nib away at it without a second thought.

As any conoisseur of Berries -- such as the man who runs the berry shop in Asber -- could tell you, Occa Berries are remarkably spicy. Still worth the while for the sweet underscore, specially if one can prepare recipes that mask or remove the spiciness, but nonetheless. One might also have already figured that, being accostumed to feeding on static electricity, the Joltik had no idea what it would taste like. When the zesty flavour made way to his teeny-tiny mouth, he felt like it was on fire.

And yet, it was practically an anti-heat injection. After the fierce taste of the berry, all of a sudden, the Heat Wave attack didn't feel as bad. It wasn't nice either, but definitely surviveable, much unlike what the blow would have previously been.

All of a sudden, incessant flapping filled the air. A few Butterfree fluttered around, emitting signals that the others in the scene -- aside from some of the bugs plastered to the humans -- could not at all sense. Slowly but steadily, a swarm of Caterpie flooded the silky ground, fearlessly tackling the battlers.

This turn of events had the new sendout very much confused. Even moreso when one of the Butterfree left her a scarlet, lobed berry, very warm to the touch, with a strange, heated breeze blowing lightly out of the bottom.

The enemy had also gained a new berry from this skirmish, of course. It was round and tiny, orange-red in color with leaves about as big as the fruit itself unfurling.

As commanded before, the chimp Pokémon then threw a defensive shield around herself. She expected to see a powerful attack failing to land... But instead, the yellow bundle of fur stood completely immobile, in spite of appearing to struggle.

The outcome of the sixth round had clear reactions -- again the battle inspired Blastoise Fortooate's dismay, whereas Le Sabre eagerly congratulated Nickolaus' continued survival, although it was clearly not to last much longer.

The signal was given, and no sooner, Celeste was on the prowl. Sensing no defensive effort from the barely conscious opponent, she unleashed a blast of air from her palm, delivering a quick knockout.

The Joltik wondered what the berries he'd been holding would taste like just before his thoughts sunk into the nether.

By 'discretion' I meant 'whichever is easier to do' in case of, say, paralysis preventing Swords Dance more than Nasty Plot. And yeah, I'd say that round wasn't long enough to warrant a bugging. Although you could move the bugs to an earlier action by one if you really wanted to, whatever way is equally right.

To replace the hardy Nickolaus after his finally being taken down, Le Sabre made her next sendout: a bipedal, orange-furred critter only slighty taller than his half-foot opponent. He whirled his twin tails noisly as he prepared for battle.

With a signal, the match recommenced.

Jesse immediately sprung into action, rocketing upwards with a jet of water -- a rather dubious idea in the not completely reliable flooring of the GIGANTIC COCOON -- landing on his target with an acrobatic fall. That last bit was, for a Fire-type, hardly much compared to the sting of getting hit, even if only tangentially, by the initial aquatic blast.

Of course, Celeste hid any signs of being damaged by the attack. She began roving about how pathetic that attack was and how somebody with a type advantage could definitely do much better. That might as well have been a Water Gun attack, and we all know how pathetic a Water Gun is, right?

The jeers crushed the Buizel's spirit. Up until that point, he had always enjoyed using Aqua Jet and, yes, Water Gun; was there supposed to be so much shame in that? Troubled by these thoughts, he put the battle aside to think about it for a while.

Which merely opened the way for more mockery. All the while making fun of the enemy's inaction, the Chimchar proceeded for her next move: quickly drawing electricity from the atmosphere around her fist, she delivered a potent punch across her target's face, an electric jolt spreading easily across his aquatic body.

This stood as a quick reminder that there was still a battle going on. As such, without giving it much thought, the weasel Pokémon once more struck with Aqua Jet. This time, however, he managed to land right over Celeste's belly, causing far more pain -- enough to get a rise no matter how hard she tried to prevent it.

It took the chimp Pokémon a minute to get back up. By that point, the round was almost over; there was only just enough time to deliver another ThunderPunch.

When it did end, however, all of a sudden, strange screeches could be heard all over. The trainers looked all around, but saw nothing. And then, many Nincada sprouted from seemingly nowhere as Ninjask suddenly halted in the air. The bug ninja hordes mercilessly pounded upon the battlers, often trying to go for their bodily fluids.

After the madness, the two species returned to the shadows -- with the exception of the Nincada left to stealthily climb on the trainers -- with Shedinja suddenly appearing to deliver more berries.

Metallica Fanboy wondered just how uncomfortable the battle was poised to get. A three on three can take a while to finish -- at the rate the insect invasions were going, the humans would easily run out of crawling bug space over the surface of their bodies.

Jesse briefly pondered Hydro Pump. It always struck him as a kind of move reserved for the bigger and burlier -- unlike his kind, which relied so much more on agility and skill. Amidst the time wasted doing a trainer's job, though, Celeste had much room to set up her own move: curled up to a roughly round figure, she stumbled all over the arena, almost like somebody didn't tell her about the stairs bro, bumping onto her opponent harshly.

At that point, the Buizel showed his impetulant foe no mercy, striking with all the insurmountable might of a pathetic squirt of water from his mouth. It stung much worse than it looked -- Chimchar absolutely detest getting their fur wet, although the high-speed rolling helped to curb it.

The round didn't deviate much from that exchange. The chimp Pokémon continued to deliver rushing tackles amidst her uncontrollable bowling rampage, always retaliated by yet another aquatic spray. The only notable highlight was a point when, launched by a patch of irregular terrain, the rolling attacker struck her target right on the stomach, a stunning blow that required at least a minute to recover from.

When the end of round was called, Blastoise Fortooate's sendout was still relentlessly picking up speed along the edges of the arena. It was at that point, however, that a band of mostly unseen assailants began to strike at the battlers with sharp-edged blades. "But NaNoWriMo has been over for three months now! You guys are the lamest ninja ever!" The referee protested.

Two Scizor sprouted from the shadows, much less agitated than the other insects present at the scene. Each one, as per usual, presented the fighting Pokémon with a berry. Both of them could recognize what they got (although Celeste didn't even see hers amidst the rolling madness) -- one because it was a craven repost, and other because it was a gift from the gods.

Even Blastoise Fortooate couldn't help but feel uncomfortable when the one and a half meter tall, fifty-six kilogram weighing Scyther rode on the humans' shoulders. For owners of ninja-like agility, they sure were a lot less subtle than the other bugs.

Celeste continued to zip uncontrollably around the edges of the cocoon as her trainer tried to give her commands, and only barely managed.

At that point no more visible than as a blur, the Chimchar started to focus her rolling, an ambitious u-turn across the wall sending her into collision course with the target. One bump sent the spinning mess flying up, landing a harsh blow straight into Jesse's face.

After getting up from the harsh blow, the Buizel carried out her own attacks. With expert timing, she blasted scalding hot water into her opponent. While the heat was very much in her favor, the water quite annoying.

Having gotten a chance to telegraph his enemy's rolling, the weasel Pokémon carefully began to swipe with his tail, trailing water in its wake. With just the right timing again, she smacked the curling opponent powerfully, sending her rolling back for a minute before she finally came to a stop.

Groggy, the chimp Pokémon proceeded to quickly eat both Apicot Berries (somehow), suddenly becoming very focused on the battle as a mystical energy flowed through her. That was how she even managed to spot the lurking Surskit just before they swarmed herself and her opponent, each tiny leg poking very uncomfortably.

The trainers were creeped out when the Masquerain appeared, eyelike antennae and all. Each one dropped a berry at the battlers. Celeste immediately ate hers, with a surge of life coursing through her; Jesse didn't seem quite as interested in his.

Wasting no time in taking charge of the battle given the opportunity, the Buizel charged at her foe, cloaked in water and flinging her upwards, setting her up for a second, downards blow. A red glow indicated that the attack didn't do as much damage as it could have -- and that nothing else that round would.

Just before the end of the round, the Chimchar growled at the sky, unleashing a massive fireball above the center of the GIGANTIC COCOON. The searing light seemed to threaten to burn the whole thing down at times, but everybody could count on all the bugs inhabiting it to contain any such damage.
