Arena: Cold Storage

Driftveil City has plenty of attractions: its picturesque lighthouse, its bustling marketplace, and, most important of all to trainers, its official gym. Surely any of those would have made fine sites for a battle and a worthy introduction to Driftveil's culture.

Instead, trainers and spectators find themeselves huddled, shivering, in a glorified walk-in refrigerator.

As it turns out, it's rather expensive to rent out Nimbasa's music hall for a few crazy trainers to have their battles in. And it's even more expensive when you have to pay for repairs after a couple of those trainers smash a hole in the stage and set fire to the orchestra pit. Over budget and facing a suddenly-inflated insurance premium on whatever location it decided to rent, the league found itself too strapped for cash to secure one of Driftveil's more desirable locales.

There was no way they could simply call off the battle, though, so they made do. And, with a bit of effort, they even managed to wrangle a local into teaching their battlers a unique bit of Unovan battle-style, the rotation battle. He's a heartbreaker... His name... Charles...

In a rotation battle, each player sends out three pokémon from the get-go, though only one fights at a time. Up to once per round, at any time, a trainer may choose to "rotate" their pokémon, swapping the one in battle for one of the two in reserve. Now, though the arena manages to avoid the iciest parts of Cold Storage, the floor's a little slick, and the pokémon being rotated in will need to take an action to get its footing. The act of rotating therefore takes a full action, but is otherwise unpenalized. A pokémon that is rendered uncapable of leaving the field under its own power cannot be rotated out.

The frigid conditions of Cold Storage are going to sap a bit of the fun out of this new battle style, though. It's so freezing that all pokémon in battle will lose 5% health and energy at the end of each round, whether or not they're currently in battle. Ice types, of course, love the cold and are immune to this effect--too bad they happen to offend Charles, who can't stand their shameless aping of his aloof and distant attitude. At the end of each round, any ice type actually in battle has a 10% chance (each) of becoming taunted, tormented, confused, or paralyzed as a result of suffering through Charles' intense, furious, and yet carefree stare for the entire round.

For these battles, the first player to post will post all three pokémon that they will be using, as well as which one will start in the active position. The second will then do the same, as well as issuing commands, and the battle will proceed as normal from there.

Round Twelve

Slash rights himself, but doesn’t give Khao a chance to react, instead darting in even faster than Khao anticipated. Khao steps back, but the expected blow doesn’t come—instead, there’s a second’s respite before Slash charges in with all his might, screaming all the way. He smashes into Khao’s stomach and sends them both skidding across the floor, and Khao crashes into yet another pile of crates, the wood splintering under his bulk.

Khao plants a paw on the ground, then his other, and, shaking, heaves himself upward. The ice melts away from his paws and the floor steams dry, so when he drags his hind legs beneath him, he doesn’t slip. The flames around him leap even higher into the air, hungry, and a few tongues catch onto pieces of broken crates. Khao rises to his full height, oddly still, though the crackling flames and the shimmer of the air cause his image to waver. Then he staggers toward Slash, the ice turning to steam at his feet.

Slash stares up at him, breaths billowing out as steam, fear written on his face and body. But he can’t escape from the pillar of fire and rage he has unleashed. The flames explode outward, smashing into crate piles and zangoose alike. Slash’s fur withers under the flame, and his skin blackens, and, finally, overcome by pain, he collapses and melts into red light.

Khao roars in triumph. The crates behind him alight, their flames fighting against the cold in their hunger for more fuel. Snowveil skates out to meet him, but she quivers and averts her eyes from the looming red-eyed pillar of flame.

Round Thirteen

Despite her trainer’s orders for an attempt at a desperation attack, Snowveil doesn’t get the chance to act.

Flames erupt from Khao’s body, blazing hotter and whiter than ever, and he darts forward before she registers anything is happening. His massive bulk smashes into the white swinub, flames exploding outward on contact, and a distinct crunch is heard. Snowveil goes flying into yet more crates, her fur burned off and her skin split and covered in blood.

But apparently, such a reckless charge has its costs, and Khao, too, keeps skidding forward. The flames are already dead, and, as it turns out, they have taken the last of his endurance with them. The once-confident typhlosion lies not far from his opponent, totally unconscious.

- Whirlpool receives $10 and a rare candy as a consolation prize. Jet receives 2 exp and can now evolve. Snowveil and Slash receive 1 exp apiece.
- allitersonance gets $15.

There’s a moment of silence as both pokémon are returned to their poké balls, but both trainers realise this can hardly be called a tie, since one of the trainers still has a pokémon—even if it is an ice-type—in reserve. The swinub’s trainer has an odd smirk on his face; it’s difficult to tell if he’s just amused, or if this in fact was part of his plan, just one small victory.

Then, a slight ruckus from the entrance of this Cold Storage. A villain struts in, wearing a cryogonal mask and accompanied by two henchmen with vanillite balaclava, but the trainers completely ignore this. Perhaps they realise that the hero of Driftveil, Kaiketsu A☆Gilder, will soon arrive to save them.

The designated referee of this match strolls in, ignoring the villains, much to their chagrin, and distract the trainers enough for me to make my exit.

I’m a heartbreaker… My name… Charles.

Riding a bike and becoming the wind fits a bad boy like me.
