Centrico Plaza is the crown jewel resting in the core of Lumiose City. Just the Prism Tower, standing at the very center of it, is already one of the most widely recognized landmarks of the entire region; and even the rest of the location isn't too shabby, with verdant gardens, beautifully patterned cobblestone pathes, the sound of the river running underneath the floor, and a surrounding circle of mid-height Kalosian houses, the splendorous local arquitecture adorning the plaza as a foil. Many businesses have come into being at the ground floors of the area, but today, the world-famous roundway of egg hatching is all Asber's, with barriers sealing off all of the many roads leading into the city's very own hub -- and of course, curious crowds gathering at the edges to watch the competition.

For this round of the tournament, each player has been loaned a fresh Pokémon from Kalos. Battles in this round will not last longer than five rounds; if neither Pokémon has fainted by the end of the fifth round, the winning trainer will be the one with the greatest sum of health and energy remaining on their Pokémon.

Let's do this, Pancham. Punch him with your power. If he Protects, Bulk Up instead. If he tries to status you, use Protect; also Protect on the third action if he starts Biding on the first action.

Status: Cheerfully leaving a trail of flattened, slimy grass through the Prism Tower's perfect lawn.

-------------------------------------

It's a perfect day to kick off the Kalos Open at the foot of the majestic Prism Tower. But depsite all the tournament hype beforehand, only Totodile has actually arrived at the appointed time. The Pancham assigned to her for the battle is getting restless, and has started picking pebbles from between the bricks and flicking them off into the crowd. By the time Whirlpool arrives, most of the curious crowd has thinned out, for one reason or another (mostly for one fuzzy little reason).

Thankfully for him, the ref is running even later, so he calls his Goomy out and tells him to go distract Pancham or something. Goomy wouldn't want to ruin anyone's fun, though, so he chooses the "or something" route and crawls off in the exact opposite direction to nibble on the clovers on the tower's front lawn.

Eventually, the ref arrives and starts hurriedly going through the rules, but Pancham decides it's time to kick things off already. She runs up and gives Goomy a good socking. Goomy soars through the air in a perfect arc and lands on the pavement with a definitive splat noise — not to mention with Goomy in a definitive splat shape. Pancham sets her Oran Berry down and pokes him with her non-powered-up paw. ... Is this normal for blobs, or did they send in an anemic one by accident, or something?

Goomy starts oozing purple fluid and Pancham freezes. Ohhhh crap, he's dead. She swivels around, looking for an escape route, but all the possible exits are clogged by spectators. This is it, then. She plops herself down in the growing puddle of slime and puts her paws in the air. But all of a sudden, the pool of gunk erupts, and an enormous wave of the stuff swamps Pancham, soaking through her fur and flooding her entire body with pins-and-needles.

She sits back up, spitting all over so the stuff doesn't get in her mouth, and trying to process what happened. There's a muffled noise that sounds like... laughter? She shakes the sludge out of her ears and eyes, and sure enough, Goomy's back to his old blobby three-dmensional self, mocking Pancham in a weird bubbling chortle. She rolls her eyes and slugs him another one, sending him spinning into a pancake shape.

While Pancham retrives her Oran Berry and tries to shake it clean, Goomy bounces back into action. He fires a pulsating, vivid purple beam from his mouth, his gelatinous body wobbling in harmony with it. Pancham barely has time to brace herself before it rushes over her with the sizzling sound of frying slime — and the smell, a few seconds later. She manages to stay on her feet, though, and just shakes it off; she's still kind of numb all over, and besides, she's having way too much fun to let a little pain get her down anyway.

Pancham marches up, grinning, makes an exaggerated winding motion with her wrist, and gives Goomy's squishy little face her best walloping yet. But this time, Goomy is prepared. He clings to the ground with all his might, as the rest of his body stretches backwards like a big elastic, and then he snaps back and headbutts Pancham with double the force, bowling her all the way over backwards and leaving her face down. She wastes no time before hoisting herself back up, though. This is getting good.

  • Sorry for the late reffing and all. Bad week, stuck with just a laptop, and Whirlpool said he'd be busy for about a week anyway.
  • I'm assuming Orans have peels, so the poison on Pancham's Oran Berry won't matter. (If it were any other berry, I would have found a way to keep it dry. Game mechanics come first and all.)
  • For the record, I ref stat boosts as 2% damage per stage, at the cost of 1% extra energy per stage with each attack.
  • Whirlpool goes first this round.

Counter if she tries another physical attack. If you can't for some reason (e.g. Torment) or if she doesn't do another physical attack, Substitute (10%), Sludge Bomb, then Thunderbolt. If she gets poisoned, you can Chill the third action. Nice job Goomy<3

Counter/Substitute (10%) ~ Counter/Sludge Bomb ~ Counter/Thunderbolt/Chill

It's kind of weird that Goomy gets Counter but Pancham doesn't. But okay.

Since you're faster than him, you can go ahead and make him sick with a Toxic concoction before he pulls up his Substitute. Then get rid of the Substitute with Ice Punch, and we'll see if he can try to use Counter in response. If he does use Counter on the second action, Spite it; if not, just use Ice Punch.

Goomy, never one to rush things, goes over his commands in his head to make sure he has them down. Chilling sounds nice! He sure hopes he gets a chance to do that. Or maybe if he ends up creating a substitute, he can leave it behind and go play around on the lawn some more?

His clover-filled daydreams are cut short when an ominous shadow steps between him and the grass. He looks up to see Pancham towering over him, grinning wickedly. This doesn't scare him nearly as much as it should, though. Instead his train of thought switches from clovers to trying to come up with more pranks to pull... until she begins drooling... purple? That is kind of alarming, he has to admit. Before he can ask what's up with that, Pancham starts spitting poison all over him with impeccable efficiency, like one of those spinning lawn sprinklers (the bane of Goomy's existence). Except, as if normal sprinklers weren't bad enough, this one sprays acid, and it's managing to soak through his gooey barrier.

This may very well be the most terrifying thing Goomy's ever seen in his life. He doesn't like to brag, but he knows slime, and he knows that it usually comes from all over. If it's specifically coming from her mouth, there is only one explanation Goomy can think of: he's about to get eaten. She's trying to melt him down so he'll be easier to eat. And, well, he's having none of that. He promptly liquefies himself — you can't melt me, I'm melting myself! — and splits apart into two Goomies, each, somehow, the size of the original. There! Goomy feels much safer with a good bodyguard. (Slugs aren't exactly good at running away, after all, even when they're dragons.)

Now he tenses up and clings to the road again, hoping against all hope that his double can cling as well as he can. Pancham charges at the decoy, fist glowing blue, as Goomy watches closely to get the timing right on his counterattack. But when she gets close enough, she lunges at it, completely throwing Goomy's timing off. The entire thing freezes, and then bursts into something like snow, and Pancham ends up falling on her face. She clambers back to her feet and proudly watches the cloud of fake Goomy dissipate. Goomy untenses himself. Well that didn't work at all.

Pancham slowly starts marching towards him. He tries to back away, but he gets stuck in a crack in the pavement. What now? But when she reaches Goomy, she makes no sign of wanting to eat him. Instead, she simply leans in close, and just glares, without saying a word. She knows what he just tried to do. She doesn't need to say anything; she knows, and Goomy knows she knows. Consequently, he finds himself not really wanting to try that prank again, maybe ever. It's simply not worth it if these are the consequences, whatever consequences these may be. All he knows is this is bad, even if he's not getting eaten for the time being.

After a minute, though, it stops being so intimidating and just feels kind of awkward. Pancham keeps standing there leering for far longer than she needs to. Goomy's not exactly sure what to do in this situation. Well, he didn't spend so long going over his commands for nothing! He jabs his eyestalks — eyebrowstalks? — anyway he jabs his forehead tentacles into Pancham's stomach and gives her a good zap. She makes a perfect "getting electrocuted" noise like something out of a cartoon. The perfect thing to lift Goomy's spirits again! Pancham totters off, smoking and smelling of burnt sludge more than ever, as Goomy laughs her off. (Just for good measure, though, he still doesn't want to try the punching bag move again if he can avoid it.)

Pancham decided it was high time to follow up with her previous intimidation and give Goomy a punch that would knock him into next week. She clenched a tiny fist which was quickly surrounded in a peculiar shroud of tannish Fighting energy. Greedy was the only way Goomy could think to describe it – tendrils of the aura kept extending in his direction, as if they wanted to engulf him and swallow him whole. Great, as if worrying about Pancham’s jaws wasn’t bad enough. Now he had to watch out for her hungry fist, too. Just as that thought crossed Goomy’s mind, Pancham lashed out, dealing a powerful punch to the slug dragon’s side. If he was any other Pokemon Goomy likely would’ve been knocked flying; as it was, he slid about half a meter as the fist sank painfully into his body. The brown energy briefly surrounded the skin around the strike point, then drew back to settle on Pancham’s stomach, healing the scorch marks from the previous Thunderbolt.

Goomy spent a few moments cringing as he waited for the pain to pass; then, he peered at the place where Pancham’s fist had sunk into his body. It was horrendously discoloured, and he felt a wave of nausea crash into him. A good time as any to tuck into an uplifting snack. With an odd sucking noise, an Oran Berry emerged from Goomy’s body and dropped onto the pavement where it glistened in the sun, covered in slime as it was. Goomy clearly didn’t mind, though, and he slurped up the berry whole, his cheeks bulging out comically as he chewed.

Feeling slightly refreshed, Goomy went through his commands in his head and… Attract. Ugh. He’d have to seduce this mean panda-thing that likely wanted to digest him? Grudgingly Goomy gave it a shot, anyway, playing his innate cuteness as a Goomy for all it was worth. He slid up to Pancham, jiggling from side to side, his beady eyes glittering enchantingly. Pancham found herself pushing down a squeal of gosh so adorable that threatened to bubble from her throat. Despite her efforts, the squeal managed to escape when Goomy rubbed his cheek on Pancham’s leg while giving a burbly purr.

Pancham clenched her fist for another strike, but she faltered when Goomy started to nibble innocently at her other hand. How could she bear to punch this… this thing, when he was being so cute and adorable and endearing and aaa. With a frustrated wail Pancham buried her face in her hands, slyly peeking out between her fingers to watch Goomy circle her and rub his cheek on every part of her that he could reach. She swore she could feel herself melting.

The illusion of adorableness was quickly shattered, however, when Goomy suddenly leapt back and stuck his tongue out at Pancham. Ha! What a loser! Did she really fall for that? Well, it couldn’t be helped, considering Pancham was atrociously gullible. Why, he could play her like a fiddle, seeing as he was clearly the master of emotional manipulation, and she’d be none the wiser! Pancham started to fume as she realized she’d been tricked. Anger lent strength to her already-sturdy limbs, encouraging brutal, if clumsy, all-out assaults.

Indeed, as Pancham ran at Goomy to deliver a rage-fueled punch, she ended up tripping over her own feet and slamming painfully on the floor. More livid than ever, she let out a frustrated scream and flailed wildly at the pavement, desperate to hit something, but she only succeeded in bruising her fists. Goomy chuckled at the spectacle; Pancham was so utterly lacking in control that it bordered on hilarious. He had rage bubbling within him too – he greatly resented the purple slime that Pancham had flooded his system with – but it was much more controlled. With vicious snarl Goomy leapt on top of Pancham, holding her down with his jaws and pummeling her with the four stalks above his eyes. Pancham shrieked in pain and managed to struggle away, but not before her back had been well-tenderized. Wincing and trying not to flex her back, Pancham fished out her Oran Berry from her fur, demolishing it in a few bites. It helped somewhat, though her back still throbbed painfully.

Pancham was still furious at Goomy for tricking her, but her dizzying rage combined with the beating she’d just taken were making her feel quite nauseous. She lay down on the pavement to take a quick nap, hoping that it would stop the world from swooping around her. Her anger was making her restless, though, so she decided to fantasize about punching Goomy in his stupid squishy face. That helped calm her down. Seeing that his opponent was taking a break, Goomy decided to relax, too, able to rest assured that, for the next few minutes, no fists would rudely interrupt his nap.

The respite from battle was not to last. Soon enough, Pancham rose to her feet, pleased to note that her head didn’t feel like it was spinning nearly as much. She’d be able to push herself through the remaining dizziness easily. Grinning, she cracked her knuckles, and a light brown aura seeped out to cover her right fist. She sprinted towards the still-napping Goomy, fist drawn back, and Goomy opened his eyes just in time to see the fist drive into his face. With a squeal he was thrown back several feet, landing on his side with a squelch. Through eyes narrowed in pain, Goomy saw the brown aura that surrounded the point of impact peel off his skin and drift towards Pancham, surrounding her bruises and smoothing them out.

A bitter rage began to well up within Goomy. It wasn’t just the indignation at the poison running through his system now – how dare Pancham punch the living daylights out of him and benefit from it? Goomy’s anger grew and grew until he felt he had to unleash it or explode. With a yowl he leapt to his pseudopod, slithered rapidly towards Pancham, and pounced, landing solidly on her chest and bearing her to the ground. Goomy once again pummeled Pancham with his eyestalks, periodically jumping up to stomp on her chest. From any other Pokemon’s perspective, it may have looked amusing, but for Pancham it was torture. Each jab of the eyestalk had a surprising amount of force behind it, and each stomp drove the breath out of her painfully.

At last, his rage spent, Goomy backed off, panting. Pancham struggled to her feet, wincing at her numerous sore spots. Goomy smirked at seeing Pancham in pain, but the grin was quickly wiped off his face when he saw the familiar brown glow surrounding Pancham’s fist. Panicked, he tried to slide away as fast as his pseudopod would allow him, but Pancham caught up easily and dealt another brutal punch to his back. Goomy wailed as he was tossed away again, landing in misshapen heap. His entire body was throbbing with agony, and he felt too battered to even reform his body into its proper shape.

In desperation, Goomy reached into the deepest reserves of his power to call upon the ultimate Dragon attack. His skin began to dance with deep blue flames and he tilted his head back to bellow at the sky, the sound deep and ominous. The construction crew assessing the damaged Prism Tower went white as ghosts upon hearing the roar, as did a few pedestrians who were around to witness the first round of destruction. The referee rubbed her ninjatoes together and cackled with glee.

The first dark speck appeared in the sky, quickly followed by a second and third. Rapidly they grew larger. Soon it was evident what they were: three gigantic meteors, each cloaked in the same ultramarine fire as Goomy was, hurtling towards the proud Kalosian capital. People pointed and screamed, scurrying around like ants on an anthill, if ants were capable of comprehending their imminent destruction. The construction crew had dropped to their knees, praying fervently to Arceus for the meteors to hit their target as cleanly as the first one did.

Alas, their prayers were useless.

The first meteor landed squarely in the middle of South Boulevard, the resulting shockwave demolishing the cobblestone road and shredding through nearby buildings. A great cloud of dust and brick was tossed into the air, along with some hapless pedestrians and taxis. The second meteor utterly flattened the Lumiose Museum, crushing countless priceless paintings and artifacts inside, along with a handful of blissfully ignorant tourists. Unnatural dragon fire danced at both sites of impact, spreading quickly, chasing down the survivors and subjecting them to a slow, painful roasting. In retrospect, the tourists inside the museum were probably the lucky ones.

Pancham watched the carnage around her with wide, frightened eyes, but the worst for her was yet to come. Her frantically-darting gaze fixed on the third and last meteor, heading straight for Centrico Plaza. It was so huge, and approaching so fast, that Pancham had no idea which way to run. She cringed and shut her eyes, waiting for the end. The meteor screamed through the air, tearing through another third of the Prism Tower as if it was made of nothing more than styrofoam, sending steel beams hurtling down to the ground. Pancham heard the cacophonous crash and the scream of a construction worker before the meteor struck her, flattening her into the newly-formed crater with bone-crushing force.

As the dust settled, the dragon fire from the meteors raged on, consuming what was left of Lumiose City in a glorious blue blaze. The referee was still cackling. Oh, how she loved destruction – and she wouldn’t even have to answer to the Kalosian authorities because the Asber League was insured for the first five rounds of the tournament battles. Her maniacal laughter was abruptly cut off, however, when the meteor in front of her shifted ever so slightly. Two small black paws poked out from beneath the meteor. Miraculously, Pancham was still conscious – albeit horribly burnt and bruised – and with a tremendous groan of effort she managed to pull herself forward so her head and shoulders peeked out from the rim of the crater.

There is a sticky layer of dried sludge on the pavement with a radius of a meter or so.
A giant meteor has been planted in the middle of South Boulevard. Most of South Boulevard has been obliterated, and dragon fire is quickly consuming the rest.
Lumiose Museum has also been smashed by a meteor. Dragon fire is making short work of the surrounding buildings.
A third meteor has landed just off to the side of the Prism Tower. The tower itself is two-third destroyed, and a great quantity of twisted steel has fallen to its base.

Pancham’s confusion was lessened by Chilling, and then eliminated by the heavy damage she took from Facade.

At last, Pancham managed to pull herself out from under the meteor with a comical pop, a cheery sound that most certainly did not match her surroundings. Groaning in pain, she shook out her fur and took stock of her numerous new bruises and burns. Then she took in the state of the plaza – the Prism Tower practically demolished, the massive crater, the meteorite still burning with dragon fire. Pancham gulped, and looked at Goomy with new fear and respect in her eyes.

Regardless of her opponent’s power, however, Pancham could see that Goomy was on the brink of collapse. One more attack ought to do him in and prevent another round of wide-scale destruction. Once more, Pancham drew her fist back and surrounded it with greedy Fighting-type energy, then swung it into Goomy’s body with bone-crushing force. Goomy didn’t have any bones to break, but his body was as susceptible to damage as any other Pokemon, and this was the final straw. A faint gurgle escaped his mouth and he deformed into a viscous purplish puddle, clearly unconscious.

Terrain notes
There is a sticky layer of dried sludge on the pavement with a radius of a meter or so.
A giant meteor has been planted in the middle of South Boulevard. Most of South Boulevard has been obliterated, and dragon fire is quickly consuming the rest.
Lumiose Museum has also been smashed by a meteor. Dragon fire is making short work of the surrounding buildings.
A third meteor has landed just off to the side of the Prism Tower. The tower itself is two-third destroyed, and a great quantity of twisted steel has fallen to its base.

Final notes
Nothing to note.

There was no time for celebration. The two rental Pokemon were quickly recalled and the battlers and referee were prepared to make a dash to the Pokemon Center, where the League-owned Abra would Teleport them back to Asber, but it was too late. Numerous police cars, along with a few fire trucks (no ambulances, though; even Kalosian officials weren’t naïve enough to think there would be survivors) spilled into Centrico Plaza from all entrances. The firefighters immediately rushed to the dragon fires and tried to put them out with little success. They were trained to battle only normal flames, and the Water Pokemon they brought with them barely made a dent in the blaze.

Meanwhile, the squad of police cars surrounded the battlers and the referee. With nowhere to escape, they could only huddle fearfully as police officers emerged and approached, all of them glowering murderously. Each Asberian was roughly grabbed by one officer and hauled to a police car. “But we’re protected by a signed agreement!” the referee wailed. “We were well within the five-round limit!”

“I don’t care,” the officer snapped. “Do you think some flimsy agreement allows you to raze over half our city to the ground?” The referee hesitated for a moment, then nodded. The officer’s eyes practically bugged out of their sockets in outrage. “Do you have no concern or… or empathy at all?!”

“Look,” the referee desperately said. “If you’re so concerned about your city, why don’t you just go to North Boulevard and save there? Your game will freeze and, when you restart, Lumiose City will be as good as new.”

The officers were so startled and bewildered by the inane suggestion that they let go of their hostages, whereupon the referee snatched up the battlers, one in each foot, and flew away.

The battle is over and Totodile is the winner. Totodile gets $10, Whirlpool gets $5 and a free Goomy, and I get $10. Good game, everyone! Good luck to Totodile in the next tournament round, and better luck next time to Whirlpool (perhaps we’ll see you again in the late brackets!).

That was intense! Thanks for reffing, blazhy. Enjoy your draconic Armageddon!

And good game, Whirlpool!
