Terrain: Castelia City Square

Castelia City is the gateway to Unova, its port welcoming trainers from around the world. Today those trainers include a fair number from Asber, turned out to compete or spectate on the first round of the League Championship. The city square at the center of Castelia has been reserved for the first round of battle, its broad cobbled expanse providing plenty of room to fight and the central fountain offering a refuge for pokémon that would rather swim than stand. Skyscrapers rise on all sides, framing the scene with the imposing prosperity of Castelia City.

More than just Asber's own trainers have turned out for the battles, though; plenty of curious Castelia residents and tourists mill about the rim of the arena, hoping to catch a few exciting battles. To ensure that they don't go unsatisfied, the regional authorities have generously--and forcefully--provided some of Unova's most powerful pokémon for the trainers to test-drive and show off for the crowd. Unfortunately, with the number of battles that need to be run through before the TCoD League's lease on the square expires, some of the fights might have to be truncated a bit.

For this battle, you will be using a pokémon on loan from the Unova League. Your choices are below. The first player will get first pick of pokémon, and the second will make their pick and then attack as usual. This match will be capped at five rounds. If both pokémon are still standing at the end of round five, the pokémon's health and energy will be added together and the one with the most will be declared the winner.

The pokémon:

Liepard (F) <Unburden>
Conkeldurr (F) <Iron Fist>
Druddigon (M) <Sheer Force>
Simipour (F) <Gluttony>

1. Whirlpool chooses a pokémon
2. Blinkingsky chooses a pokémon and attacks
3. Whirlpool attacks

Simipour, please.

Not Conkeldurr, nope, not at all.

Edit: Calling her Amphitrite, for no particular reason.

I'll take Druddigon, who is now named Draco(hey, I'm having an imagination block at the moment! :c)

Alright Draco, those claws of yours aren't nearly sharp enough. Lets start off with Hone Claws to make them nice and sharp, unless you are taunted, in which case use Dragon Tail Next, lets give Amphitrite a little bit of an electric jolt with thunder fang, unless she protects, in which case use hidden power, just to see what it rolls. Finally, finish with a substitute 15%, unless she taunts you, in which case use Dragon Claw on it and show it just what happens when you taunt a dragon.

Hone Claws/Dragon Tail~Thunder Fang/Hidden Power~Substitute ~15%/Dragon Claw

Well, Amphitrite, let's see what we can do.

I do think a Double Team (5 clones) will help a bit; next, Scald if Draco hits a clone with Thunder Fang, Attract him if he doesn't. Oh, and a Low Kick to help kill that Substitute; Nasty Plot if there isn't a Sub.

Scattered applause greets the trainers as they step up to the makeshift arena, turning their borrowed pokéballs over in their hands but not looking the slightest bit nervous. There is further excitement as the start of the match is announced and the trainers toss their pokéballs to the pavement, revealing their choices. Blinkingsky's proves to be a druddigon, temporarily dubbed Draco, while Whirlpool releases, appropriately enough, a water type. Amphitrite the shoots longing glances towards the fountain, but she nevertheless pays some attention to her temporary trainer, listening for orders. As the commands come she sharpens her focus, giving her full attention to Draco, and moments later, the battle begins.

- Cracking his knuckles, ready to begin.

Draco doesn't waste time getting ready to fight, drawing his claws back and forth over one another, sharpening them meticulously. He ignores Amphitrite completely as she runs swift circles around him, her broad grin and playful lunges in his direction suggesting that she hopes to get a rise out of him. In this she fails, though her swift movement is more than enough to pop five illusory copies of herself into existence.

Draco is surprised, once he gets done doing his nails, to find himself facing six simipour instead of one. He takes the appearance of the clones in stride, though, and doesn't spend long deciding which should be his target. The druddigon lumbers forward, mouth gaping wide and teeth sparking with electricity, and bites down hard on one of the simipour. His teech snap together hard, though, and a blast of searing-hot water strikes him in the side of the face as one of the other simipour unleashes a scald attack at her opponent.

Draco roars and swats at his face, shaking droplets of burning water in all directions, and backs off a few paces. Grumbling to himself, the druddigon stoops to rip up a few cobblestones, revealing dark earth beneath. As Draco pours his life energy into the soil, it rises up and assembles itself into the shape of another druddigon, slightly smaller than the first and with burning stars of silver energy where its eyes should be.

No sooner has the substitute taken shape than it comes under attack, the five simipour around it leveling their tails at it and unleashing five identical blasts of water. Unfortunately, all five (or only one, in truth) manage to miss, spraying water in a long line across the tiles but failing to strike either Draco or his avatar.

A Nasty Plot might be useful, along with Ice Beam. Role Play last just to confuse them. If Draco Protects on the last two actions (and didn't Taunt you), make a Substitute (10%) and if applicable, shift Ice Beam to the third action.

Edit: Was Scald not-very-effective? You reffed it as dealing 8%.

I probably shouldn't be correcting you but maybe I'll see your damage reffing

Alright Draco, start off by using snatch to claim that nasty plot for your own. Then, use earthquake and eliminate those pesky clones, unless of course you can't use it or it wouldn't elminate the clones for whatever reason, in which case use Charge Beam and sweep the beam across all of the clones. Finally, use Snarl so that we can do some damage and still cripple her special attack.

EDIT: Also, doesn't hone claws boost attack and accuracy, not attack and defense?

Amphitrite glowers at the damp trail left behind by her hydro pump. Clearly, if she wants to get the better of Draco, she's going to have to think a little harder than she has been. Tapping a finger against her chin, the simipour starts to turn plans over in her mind, only to gasp and freeze up as a chilly tendril of dark energy wraps itself around her body and taps into her mind.

Amphitrite hadn't even noticed Draco preparing his snatch attack, and now she's caught firmly in its grip, powerless to stop it as it siphons off her recent thoughts, pouring all her devious plans into Draco's mind. The druddigon smirks and breaks off the connection, feeling certain that he's gotten the better of his opponent.

The simipour is far from done for, though. She raises her tail and fires a blast of water that, in direct opposition to the scald she launched earlier, is well below freezing. Draco's new substitute shows surprising agility as it throws itself into the ice beam's path, taking the blow for its master. This will be its only chance to take a blow for its master, in fact; the icy crust that forms after the ice beam strikes shatters, and the substitute's body crumbles with it, ending up as no more than a forlorn pile of dirt.

Draco is starting to get irritated. Well, if Amphitrite is going to take out his substitute, he'll see to it that her clone friends go as well. The druddigon slams his fists into the ground, sending a pulse of seismic energy rippling towards the center of the earth. It returns a few moments later, magnified a hundredfold, and the whole arena shakes.

Cracks spread out amidst the cobblestones and onlookers stumble and clutch at one another. Amphitrite, meanwhile, is knocked off her feet and bounced painfully along the ground, her clones vanishing as they receive similar treatment. The earthquake is brief, though, and when it ends Amphitrite is bruised and angry but not so much the worse for wear.

She jumps back to her feet and studies Draco through narrowed eyes. Then she hunches forward in an imitation of the druddigon's slouch, clawing exaggeratedly at the air and gnashing her teeth. She's doing her best to get into the druddigon's mindset, setting aside her great love of food for the dragon's tendency to trade finesse for pure force.

Draco isn't amused by the display. Mock him, will she? He lets out a deep, rattling snarl, baring teeth much more impressive than Amphitrite's. The simipour stops her act for a moment, a bit unnerved by the menacing noise.

Lets it keep simple, Draco.

Dragon claw first, then use thunder fang, then finish with Dragon Claw again. If she protects at any point, then use Hone Claws. If she decides to do any stat-boosting/substitute-making/ANYTHING that can be snatched, then use Snatch to do just that.

Now that she's feeling a bit more fierce, Amphitrite doesn't hesitate to spray down her opponent with a freezing stream of water. This time there's no substitute to take the punishment for the druddigon, and he feels the freezing blast himself. The dragon grumbles to himself and sweeps a thin layer of ice from his shouler; though exuberant, the attack is too messily applied to have any real chance at freezing him up. That nuisance dealt with, Draco trundles towards Amphitrite and slashes at her with blazing claws.

Amphitrite gasps as the dragon claw opens deep wounds down her side, then retaliates by giving Draco a face full of ice beam. Draco stumbles back, roaring and tearing at his face to get the ice off. He gnashes his teeth, sparks flying as they slam together, then lunges forward and bites down on Amphitrite's shoulder. The simipour's fur puffs out in all directions as she freezes in an attitue of pain and shock, but thankfully the fit passes swiftly. The bite might have been more vicious than usual as a result of sheer force, but all the same it contained too little electricity to cause temporary paralysis. Nevertheless, Draco is able to get in another vicious dragon claw before Amphitrite regains enough control over her body to hose the dragon down with another icy stream of water and drive him back a bit.

Thus ends a brutally short and straightforward flurry of action that leaves Draco shivering and covered in small patches of ice while Amphitrite bleeds profusely from deep gouges in her torso. There's no question that both pokémon are starting to flag; another round or two like that, and the battle will be over.

...how am I paralyzed? Sheer Force cancels secondary effects, no? And, uh, the "commands" and "used" are backwards, by the way.

Uh, can I wait until this is cleared up?

Edit: I suppose I shouldn't wait, so Work Up and Ice Beam (x2). If he tries to Snatch the Work Up, Scald; if he protects the second action, Nasty Plot. If he protects the third action, do nothing

Amphitrite clenches her fists, her tail lashing fitfully as she gets herself worked up to complete the final leg of her battle. She jumps lightly from foot to foot, ignoring the stinging of her wounds, and does everything she can to get her head back in the game.

Draco watches this all with an unpleasant sneer, then opens his mouth and lets out a deep, vicious snarl. Amphitrite is completely unprepared for the noise and is so shocked that she actually jumps back a step, lands awkwardly, and ends up falling to the ground. Draco chuckles darkly to himself as Amphitrite, completely embarrassed and suddenly feeling much less confident, scrambles to get up.

The druddigon's mirth is to be short-lived, however, as Amphitrite takes this opportunity to fill his open mouth full of ice beam. Draco gurgles out a cry of shock and shakes his head wildly, straining his jaw against the ice locking it in place. He manages to crush the ice between his teeth and get his jaw moving again, but his whole face is numb and tingly even after he spends a few seconds trying to massage life back into it.

Annoyed, Draco gnashes his teeth, charging them with electricity, then rushes at Amphitrite and clamps down on her arm with another thunder fang. There is a loud discharge of electricity and all the simipour's fur stands on end for a second, but she manages to wrestle her bloody arm free and stumble away from Draco as he raises his claws in front of his face, a green bubble of energy springing up around his body.

Amphitrite knows there's no point trying to attack the dragon while he's walled off behind a protect, so she takes the brief lull in the fighting to nurse her injured arm and try to figure out what she's going to do from here on out. She can barely stand anymore; Draco isn't looking too well himself, and one way or another the next round will be the last.

There's no time for Amphitrite to stand around feeling sorry for herself. If she's going to turn this battle around, she'll need to work on creating a bit of her own luck. Draco is honestly surprised when the simipour drops to all fours and takes off at a dead run; he didn't think she still had it in her. The double team is hard on Amphitrite, and she leaves a trail of blood spatters in her wake as she dashes around the edge of the arena. The simipour's determination is greater than her injuries, though, and she succeeds in producing no fewer than eight clones, and the ring of identical simipour begins to close in on Draco after Amphitrite takes a moment to catch her breath and admire her handiwork.

Draco lets out an irritated snort as his eyes range around the assembly of simipour, but his annoyance masks growing nervousness. If he can't figure out which of these is Amphitrite soon, he might well lose. He makes a close inspection of the simipour as flames erupt around his claws, then lunges for one he feels sure he saw twitch independently of the others. It must have just been his imagination, though--his claws rip through nothing but empty air and a shadow image of a simipour.

The eight remaining simipour raise their tails, drawing a bead on their opponent. Desperate not to lose his opportunity to attack, Draco rushes at the nearest simipour, fist crackling with darkness as he unleashes a powerful punch. This, too, sails on through nothing as another clone fizzles out. A moment later, an icy dousing is Draco's reward for his mistake.

The druddigon groans and slowly shakes the ice from his skin. The cold temperatures are threatening to shut down his reptilian body, and he's well aware that time is running out. There are still so many simipour ranged before him, and he has only one chance to find the correct one.

There's really nothing to do but pick one and hope he's gotten lucky. The simipour have their tails aimed at him again, readying an ice beam; there is only a narrow opening in which he can hope to get a sucker punch in. Again, Draco leaps at a simipour, launching a powerful sucker punch. Again he is disappointed as his target disappears instead of going flying.

The ice beam that follows is almost a mercy; Draco has no chance to curse himself or his luck before the icy blast knocks him clear into unconsciousness.

Skyman is obviously dismayed as he recalls Draco, while Amphitrite and her trainer are elated by their change in fortunes. It's been a close match, and the crowd is enthusiastic as the trainers exchange a post-battle handshake.

Whirlpool gets $10 for winning, while Skyman gets $5. I get $15. Good game, you two.

Good game, Skyman. Sorry that end round sort of relied on the generator, but, uh.

But thank you so much for reffing this in a month, Negrek. :D

Aw well, good game. We should have a rematch sometime
