Arena: The Castle Oubliette

The oubliette is a tiny, cramped room sunk into the floor, buried far beneath the castle's foundations. It's about six feet wide, eight feet long and eight feet high, so only small- to medium-sized Pokémon can fit inside. The entire room is made of heavy, indestructible stone--none of it can be dislodged or moved for things like Rock Slide or Dig, and there's nothing to shake if Earthquake is used. There is also no water or sand or anything like that available for use in moves like Surf or Sand Tomb, and all weather moves will fail because the sky is completely inaccessible. There are no doors or windows, the only way in and out being the long, slick and narrow tunnel leading up about 30 feet up to the dungeon above. (And the reinforced steel trap door is locked from the outside.) The only light comes from a single torch, flickering weakly in the room's north wall; the arena is quite dim already, so I would advise against putting it out unless you want to risk bumping into stone walls in total darkness.

And good luck dodging attacks, flying around or building up speed--the tight, uncomfortable space makes anything more than hopping around and swinging some moderate punches understandably difficult. Anything larger than a Pichu is going to need to rethink the range and execution of many its attacks. Only one way in, no way out and no room to run away... can you survive a battle in the oubliette with your sanity intact?

Aaand by coin flip:

Kratos Aurion sends out.
Grass King sends out and attacks.
Kratos Aurion attacks.
I ref.

Also, just a little question about the arena. Am I right in assuming that the 30-foot tunnel is just that, and right at the mouth of a tunnel there's a steel grate that can't be opened? In other words, the battlers can't get to the dungeon above the cramped battle arena.

...no one ever takes my battles. ;-; I love you.

And yes, that's correct about the tunnel. No way out of the little room. (You accidentally switched my team with Grass King's though.)

Aaanyway, in the interest of expediting abuse of the computer terminal in time for the next round of the tourney, I'll use Ghost in the Machine.

I remember Ghost in the Machine when it was still a Porygon. Anyway, I'll fight ghost with ghost, so to speak, and send out Spooky the Gastly.

Okay Spooky, lets start off with Hypnosis, then Curse, and finish up with Dream Eater. If Ghost isn't asleep on the last action, then use Giga Drain. If you're taunted and can't use your first and/or second action, use ThunderPunch either time.

Hypnosis / ThunderPunch ~ Curse / ThunderPunch ~ Dream Eater / Giga Drain.

Grateful as we are to Grass King for reffing the match that evolved you in the first place, Ghost, we must destroy his giant gas cloud in order for you to evolve again. And destroy it utterly. Magic Coat that Hypnosis back at Spooky. Then set up some protection for later with a large Substitute and end with a nice, solid Dream Eater to regain some of that health. I don't think Magic Coat-reflected attacks can miss, but I suppose the initial Hypnosis might; either way, if Hypnosis/Magic-Coat-Hypnosis fails then Lock-On on the second action and blast the little sucker with Zap Cannon on the third.

Magic Coat ~ Substitute 20%/Lock-On ~ Dream Eater/Zap Cannon

The castle oubliette was eerily quiet this morning, the flickering and sputtering torch only enhancing the spooky atmosphere. The janitors had spent the entire night sweeping the room, kicking out any inhabitants, human or not, in the process for the upcoming battle. In fact, it was about time the battlers had arrived – ahh.

A whoop sounded from the slick metal tunnel leading to the oubliette, echoing and re-echoing off of the walls of the room. A few seconds later the referee tumbled out of the mouth, hair slightly disheveled and a ridiculous grin plastered on her face. Most would argue that she was a bit less than sane. The two battlers came in after, one stopping to yell at the guard to lock the door before half-staggering, half-slipping down the tunnel. They looked warily around the room before taking their places, and after several minutes of the referee going over rules nobody cared about, threw their Pokeballs.

On Kratos Aurion’s side emerged a strange creature: a blue and pinkish… thing that stared intently at its opponent. Grass King’s Gastly responded by sticking his grotesquely long tongue at Ghost in the Machine. The bundle of data made no response, instead saying in a mechanical voice, “Opponent analyzed. Physical control enhanced. Begin termination?”

Not letting the size of the oubliette deter him – he could phase through the walls, after all – Spooky began to rock from side to side, willing Ghost in the Machine to follow his movements with psychic signals. However, the waves couldn’t reach his opponent fast enough, and Ghost in the Machine turned its head away before he got a ticket to Dreamland. Really, it would’ve been preferable for the Hypnosis attack to hit, but the Porygon2 had avoided eye contact out of instinct. It obeyed its commands anyway, altering the data of its cells to make them a glimmering silver. The attack did little more than reflect the torchlight, though, and after a few moments Ghost in the Machine let its cells resume their natural state. It sighed, slightly disheartened by the wasted energy. Spooky, unaware of his opponent’s thoughts, pouted at the failure of his attack.

The Gastly began to cackle, and the sound was so sudden that Ghost in the Machine rocked back like something had pushed it. “You think, hee hee, you can get away, do you? Ha ha ahe hee!” His words sounded like crackling flames, and the wicked laughter continued, growing ever louder and rising in pitch. In between maniacal chuckles, Spooky chanted an arcane phrase over and over, commanding vengeful spirits to sap his opponent’s vitality. As the words were repeated, the torchlight seemed to dim, and the shadows the fire threw on the walls took the shape of dancing ghostly specters. Eventually the ghost’s screaming cackle rose to such a volume that the sound bounced off of every surface and seemed to come from all directions, prompting the battlers to cover their ears in fear of going deaf. The Porygon2 began to shudder, feeling an awful presence descend on him, but Spooky didn’t seem to be faring much better; the high-pitched laughter finally broke off, and he was bobbing about half a foot lower than he was before. The angry souls had demanded a hefty price for the curse laid upon his opponent.

Ghost in the Machine was positively vibrating at this point, feeling really under the weather as a result of the curse. Nevertheless, it swept the area with its unblinking eyes for its opponent – it didn’t take that long due to the size of the arena – and muttered something under its breath. At that, the Porygon2’s eyes turned blood red and remained locked on Spooky, no matter how much he swung his semisolid head around.

Undeterred by this, Spooky surrounded both Pokemon with a faint, greenish glow; Ghost in the Machine let out a surprised hum. The hum was replaced by twitches of pain as little, shining orbs separated from its body to gather in a shimmering heap in front of the Gastly. With a grin, the ghost’s tongue lolled out and swiped up the glowing spheres, the appendage retreating hastily into his mouth before the precious life energy was lost. Spooky cackled to himself, albeit less menacingly than before, and smacked his lips.

Ghost in the Machine, on the other hand, was preparing a devastating attack as Spooky enjoyed his meal. Ribbons of electricity surrounded its blue-pink form as it raised its internal voltage. When it was satisfied with the amount of electrical power, it let loose with a powerful bolt of energy that jumped sporadically. Without the aid of Lock-On, the erratic bundle of electricity would have most certainly missed, but just as it was about to hit the wall it swung around three hundred and sixty degrees and hit Spooky square in the back. The incredible attack momentarily blew the ghost into wispy fragments which recollected themselves in seconds, but even then the potent electricity had Spooky in its grasp. His formless muscles seized at random, and he felt sluggish and uncoordinated.

Hypnosis missed, thus Magic Coat failed.
Also, Magic Coat cost slightly less energy since well, there was nothing to reflect.

Okay, hm. Well, nothing to do but ignore the curse for the time being, Ghost. Now you can set up that Substitute I asked for earlier, but just make it 15% this time. Then give Spooky a good Zen Headbutt and finish off with Discharge. If he manages to taunt you on the first action, use Psychic instead; if he uses Protect or is unreachable (unless he's behind a sub of his own, in which case attack as normal) on the second or third actions, Sharpen or Defense Curl if you're not taunted and try Thunder if you are; it might get lucky and break the protect.

Substitute 15%/Psychic ~ Zen Headbutt/Sharpen/Thunder ~ Discharge/Defense Curl/Thunder

Okay Spooky, I has a plan.

Start off with another Hypnosis, and it will hopefully work. Then use Dream Eater for health. If Ghost isn't asleep, then use Will-O-Wisp, then Toxic.

Hypnosis ~ Dream Eater/Will-O-Wisp ~ Dream Eater/Toxic

Good luck spookster!

Spooky started the round with the same attack as the previous one. He cackled loudly to draw Ghost in the Machine’s attention, and once he was sure he got it, began to sway back and forth while sending soothing psychic pulses through eye contact. The Porygon2 knew the trick well enough by now, though; quickly it averted its gaze before it was too late. It then proceeded to shake itself vigorously, thin streams of coding breaking away from its pink and blue body as it did so. Using its beak, Ghost in the Machine nudged and prodded the complicated text until it was roughly Porygon2-shaped, then spat a curious blobby substance into the shell. As soon as the life energy touched the strands of HTML, the structure solidified and immediately moved to Ghost in the Machine’s side, ready to protect its creator from harm. Spooky pouted and hissed in disdain; not only did his Hypnosis miss a second time, but he had another opponent to deal with.

The Gastly shook himself out of his little mope. His opponent would suffer, asleep or not. With a chuckle the floating ball of gas prepared to pluck a glowing mote of cerulean flame from the back of his throat. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught sight of Ghost in the Machine charging towards him, its skull covered with lustrous bluish-purple psychic energy. Spooky tensed and braced himself, waiting for the horrible sting of the aura against the poison gas that made his body. The Porygon2 charged with vicious speed – and flew right by its target, the wind of its passing stirring the fringes of its opponent’s form. The force it put behind its attack caused the bundle of data to overbalance and pitch forward into the wall, and Spooky laughed at the slightly ridiculous scene before coughing up an azure cinder which flared to life as soon as it was free from the ghost’s tongue. It carved a wobbly path through the air, flying erratically but true. Ghost in the Machine followed the flame’s movements with amazement and suspicion, but its substitute pushed it out of the way several seconds before the attack hit. The Will-o-Wisp exploded against the structure, but its expression remained as blank as it was before, indicating that it was totally unaffected by the technique.

Picking itself off of the ground, Ghost in the Machine began to jiggle around, gathering all the static and electricity in the oubliette. It wasn’t long before it began to glow with a yellow aura, so intense it was almost white, and shot it out in all directions. The battlers and referee merely felt a slight tingling as the charge rippled through them, but Spooky definitely felt the full magnitude of the attack, if his shriek was anything to go by. The high voltage of the attack gripped his ghostly body, flooding it with a burning sensation, and even when the electrical wave passed by he was unable to move. The Gastly struggled briefly against his jerking muscles as spasms passed through his form, but in the end the paralysis won over, leaving the ghost immobile save for the furious narrowing of his eyes. As if the glare had triggered something, Ghost in the Machine twitched violently, wincing as the vengeful spirits of the curse ate away at its insides.

Grass King attacks first next round.
Hypnosis missed again. The virtual dice roller must hate you, Grass King.
Spooky attacked first on the 1st action because Hypnosis is much easier to perform than Substitute in terms of complexity.
Zen Headbutt missed. Actually, I think the virtual dice roller hates both of you.
Because Zen Headbutt missed, Ghost in the Machine was slightly damaged from ramming into the wall.
Spooky was fully paralyzed on the last action.

Sorry Spook, I forgot thta there would be a sub if Hypnosis didn't work. Don't worry though, I have another plan that will soon be put into action.

Okay Spooky, start off with Rest, then Sleep Talk twice. If at any point you wake up though, or are taunted somehow, use Dark Pulse.

Rest/Dark Pulse ~ Sleep Talk/Dark Pulse ~ Sleep Talk/Dark Pulse

*sigh* If only you could learn Taunt or Uproar or something, Ghost. Ah, well, we can still work with this. Use Nightmare as soon as Spooky falls asleep, then Dream Eater twice--target his health the first time, but drain his energy the second time. Should paralysis prevent Spooky from falling asleep, however, just finish him off with three Psychics.

Nightmare/Psychic ~ Dream Eater (health)/Psychic ~ Dream Eater (energy)/Psychic

Spooky stretched his jaws wide in a yawn. Only a few rounds into the battle, and he was already feeling worn out; resting seemed like a great idea. Now, if only his eyelids would stop twitching… The paralysis came back once more, gripping the Gastly’s semi-solid muscles with an iron hold. Mouth still open wide, with his enormous tongue lolling out, Spooky made several gasping and stuttering noises as he fought a losing battle with his stiff body. On the other side of the oubliette, Ghost in the Machine clicked uncertainly. Spooky definitely wasn’t falling asleep any time soon, so it reached out to invade its opponent’s mind with its own. Psychic energy was shaped into something resembling a translucent, purplish hand, which seemed to dissolve into Spooky’s gaseous skull. No more than a split second passed before the gasping was replaced with pained shrieks echoing off of the stone walls as Ghost in the Machine harshly assaulted the pain sensors in the Gastly’s brain. The virtual creature eventually released its hold on Spooky, who seemed too pained to glare at his assailant.

Ghost in the Machine barely gave him any time to recollect himself before the Gastly felt another intrusion in his ghostly form. With an inward grimace he braced himself, but there was little he could do to stop himself from screeching in horrible agony before the force of the attack. Ghost in the Machine haphazardly pounded at its opponent’s cortex, causing the ghoul to shiver with cold one second and pant with heat the next, his face contorting in pain all the while. When it was finally satisfied with the amount of suffering it had caused, Ghost in the Machine retreated from Spooky’s mind. By now, the ghost was in so much distress that he had no problem gathering the negative thoughts necessary for his next attack. A shivering black aura peeled away from his body, collecting just under the floating phantom, before violently exploding in a circular wave with a hiss. Ghost in the Machine’s substitute jumped in front of its creator, shielding it from the pessimistic energy before it could reach the Porygon2. Even though it wasn’t directly subject to the attack, Ghost in the Machine felt an ominous cold brush its body and shivered.

Shaking off the residual chill from the Dark Pulse, Ghost in the Machine prepared itself for one more psychic stabbing. Spooky was clearly in a poor physical state, hardly able to stay aloft. When a slight tingling in the ghost’s skull announced a final mental invasion, he didn’t even bother to fight it. Before the attack was halfway done, Spooky found himself unable to stand up against the pain in his skull and allowed his eyelids to slip shut. With his fading consciousness, he saw the familiar light of the Pokeball engulf his ethereal form and heard garbled human speech as the referee drew the battle to a close.

Why didn’t you guys tell me that I accidentally put 3 O’s instead of one beside your usernames? D<
I’ve concluded that the virtual dice roller does indeed hate Grass King. Spooky was paralyzed on the first action, so Rest was not executed.
Spooky fainted on the 3rd action.
Oh, and this must’ve been the fastest ASB battle I’ve ever seen.

Kratos Aurion gets $8 for winning, Grass King gets $3, and I get $5 for reffing. Ghost in the Machine is rewarded 2 EXP, and Spooky is awarded 1 EXP.

Actually there have been faster defeats (I've KO'd a Pokémon in one round before, and Negrek reffed another battle that lasted only two rounds total), but yeah, that was quick. o.O Thanks for reffing it, and good game, Grass King.

...if only it had been just a little faster, I could've had my Porygon-Z in time to withdraw all of my big scary pokemans and turn them loose on people in the tourney... *grumble*

Well, I'd really like to know just how you managed to KO a Pokemon within one round. Aww, and here I was thinking three rounds was the shortest D:

Oh, and blame Grass King for that. I had to wait a day or two for Negrek to confirm how much Curse cost.

There was no damage cap, I was facing a Pokémon that had a STAB Earthquake with something that was weak to Ground, and then Countered Earthquake three times. :D It was fun, but I'll probably never get a chance to do it again. Ah, well.

*pats* It's okay! It's still really, really fast! I've never seen the RNG hate someone so hard before!

*shakes fist* curse yoooou, Grass Kiiiing

Ah yes, I remember that battle. Some Gible against your Kratos Aurion (Houndour at the time), right? I laughed pretty hard when I read the commands.

Very true. I was expecting Spooky to be able to pull off the Rest, since the paralysis was only at 10%, but guess what? It rolled an 8. I also laughed pretty hard at that.

Hey, at least you won the other battle I mentioned; not all of my examples humiliated you, dahling. ;)

If you're thinking of me vs. Grimdour the Desecrater, that battle actually lasted three rounds. I got both of his EQ-weak Pokémon to 50% (capped) after round one, and on round two one poke survived the Earthquake onslaughts with 2% HP. He was slaughtered the next round.
