[15] Keldeo vs Eta Carinae (ref: Totodile)

It doesn't look like there's very much that could trip us up from our opponent's movepool, so I guess just go for some Ice Beams all around, sweeping if there are Double Team clones. If she's unhittable besides substitute or clones, she has a Mirror Coat, or she's preparing an Avalanche, try Calm Mind, and if she uses a reflectable move, use Magic Coat.

Ice Beam / Calm Mind / Magic Coat x3

Alright, I feel bad for leaving this so long with all the other battles finishing up. Let's go!

Start with an Icy Wind to hopefully give you the speed advantage once more. Next, let's try some unconventional strategy again, why don't we? You have a huge size advantage over that poor Absol, so slither over there and use Wrap, trying as hard as you can to completely envelop her. I don't want you to kill Taylor, but make it super duper hard for her get off any Ice Beams. If that's going swell, then let's take this battle into friendly territory; we're going to (try to) get her underwater. Dive down with her in tow if you can (ideally, if there's some way to slam her into the marsh bed and inflict some damage with the move without losing your grip, go for that), but if you don't think you have the strength for that, bring up a Surf and let it carry you both into the marsh. If somehow she's already out of the Wrap, Dragon Tail her as far away as you can, preferably also in the direction of the marsh. Trust me Regalecida, it'll work.

Icy Wind ~ Wrap ~ Dive/Surf/Dragon Tail

So, I'll be taking over this one again.

Keldeo vs Eta Carinae
Kalos Open Quarterfinals
Round 6

2 vs 2 Inverse Battle
Style: Set
DQ: 7 days
Damage Cap: 35%
Banned/Restricted Moves: OHKOs, Pain Split, Perish Song, moves that KO the user; direct recovery is restricted to 1 use in the match (by any Pokémon), Chills are restricted to 5 uses (per Pokémon), and damage-dealing Normal-type moves are restricted to 3 uses (per Pokémon).
The great wooden bridge across the valley will be the site of this battle. It's long and wide, with high protective rails (though they may be not much more than a widely spaced net of ropes). The bridge is very sturdy and will readily withstand much of the action, although inevitably it isn't entirely unbreakable, and sufficiently extreme trauma may cause it to snap. The fall is unlikely to be painful for many Pokémon other than those of the Fire-type, however, as the height isn't too great and what waits below is not much more than soft marshy ground and calm waters. While the thing is still standing, at least, the battle gets a picturesque backdrop, with just the right setup of waters, hills, and skies.

The most important trick to this battle as it's being influenced by the mysterious powers of the Psychic known as Inver, who causes super-effective moves to deal not very effective damage while not very effective or entirely ineffective moves deal super-effective damage. To battle under these circumstances is known as an Inverse Battle. Furthermore, as Normal-types are extremely advantaged in these battles, Pokémon whose only type is Normal may not be sent out in this match.
Arena status: Snow is scattered across the bridge, some spots sizzling against puddles of boiling water. Below, a half-dissolved snowball and a loose belt float on the marsh.

While the referees exchange places in the background once again, the battlers remain focused on their match. Taylor hesitates, carefully awaiting here enemy's move, and for her benefit she gets a faceful of the same uncomfortable windchill she'd just inflicted in the previous round.

As soon as the Icy Wind landed, Regalecida got moving. As she squeezed right into her foe's personal space and then some, she couldn't quite avoid her continuous attacks, a stream of frozen blasts that burned cold right through her insulation, as if it were worse than useless; chilled as though she may have been, she still accomplished her move, twisting tight around the opponent's body as if to mug her Leftovers back.

The plan was another entirely, however. The Milotic calmly called out to the stagnant water well below the bridge, her magenta fins fluttering in the air as if stirred by a gale. At her beckon, the calm marshwater resolved itself into a gigantic wave, sweeping the old bridge almost clean of all the clutter it had accumulated throughout the fight -- including the fighters themselves, who were thrown over the rails into an awkward, but soft crash landing against the now unstilled bog all the way down.

Much to Regalecida's dismay, being covered in mud and sea serpent did little to deter Taylor from firing off another close-range icy attack.

Arena status: The bridge is now almost entirely clean of ice, although the discarded belt has ended up hanging from the railings. The battle has moved on to the marsh below, where a number of snow piles float scatttered, including a half-dissolved snowball.

Notes:
-I’m applying Speed changes as Totodile was, so that hopefully shouldn’t be an issue. (It probably would be inconsequential anyway, but just in case.)
-Icy Wind on the first action was a critical hit.
-The specifics on Wrap weren't, well, specific enough to warrant any penalties on Taylor's Ice Beams.
-Regalecida's body shape makes it somewhat unachievable for her to move under her own power while completely wrapped around something, so she opted for Surf. The move dealt no damage to either battler, though.
-Regalecida hit the damage cap on the third action.
-Eta Carinae commands first next round.

Well, it was a valiant effort, but I don't see a path out here. Go out guns-a-blazing with Blizzard, Giga Impact, and Hyper Beam, the last two single action.

Well played, Keldeo, you had me backed into a corner right from the start!

Good game to you as well, Eta, and kudos for the amazingly creative Feint Attack strategy back in round two, too!

If it's flash we're going for here, let's take it home with Fire Blast, Blizzard, and one-action Hyper Beam. If you can't use any of those moves, instead Flamethrower, Water Pulse, and Ice Beam, respectively.

It was a good day to be a snail dragon on the marsh.

The air felt pleasantly humid, the water was the right amount of thick with moss and sludge. The sunlight hit the cliffs just right. The humans were making noise on the mountains again, but their aggravation was a small trifle compared to what a good day it was.

The water suddenly became restless and colder. But that was only another improvement -- a refreshing splash, and some fun waves to play in. And then, icy chilling winds, unusual spring weather even for the typically cold location... And yet, somehow, the frost felt pleasant and inviting, bringing about energy rather than lethargy. It was an even better day to be a snail dragon on the marsh.

At the heart of the windstorm, a surprise. A blinding flash, and then, heat. At first, welcoming warmth; within seconds, scalding fury. A massive bonfire burned right over the water. It burned through the muck, and it burned through the body as if its make had inadvertently changed from slime to sawdust.

Agitated sounds come out of the raging flames. A struggle, splashing over the restless marsh. A sickening, skull-craking noise, and the sense of something approaching... And then, two bodies, locked to one another, tumbling and rumbling forth like a fallen log, perhaps to knock an innocent snail dragon over from a brief safe respite and straight into the flames again.

Over the heart of the inferno, another comfortable gale blew... But just too far away to make a difference – only close enough to be barely felt, only close to enough to bid adieu, to leave no shelter from the tortures of temperature. And then, a fading sight, yet an all too clear sight. A raging orange glow, almost impossible to look directly into. Two bursts of terrible energy meeting frontally, each desperately trying to push the other back.

Push and pull and push and pull, the center of the confrontation shifts back and forth like a sick and broken pendulum... And finally, the clash reaches its climax. Neither capable of overcoming the other, the forces establish their final reaction to one another. The sound of it, perhaps loud enough to be heard from Snowbelle to Couriway; the resulting shockwave, chaos incarnate. Nothing is in its due place after the energy ripples through the entire route.

The last, blurring image, before consciousness drifts away... Struggling to stand, an Absol. A sign of an ill fate in the works – perhaps rather late in its arrival, perhaps arriving to signal that, somehow, the worst was yet to come. Could it be?

It was no longer a good day to be a snail dragon on the marsh.

Notes:
-I was tempted to have Taylor take backfire damage from attacking at extremely close range with Fire Blast, but eh, the mechanics alone have provided enough spectacular but ultimately meaningless numbers to this round.
-Blizzard missed in the second action. Un freaking believable, I know. It whiffed too badly to even have the extreme promixity count towards anything. The RNG gods have willed beam-o-war unto mankind, and so mankind must comply.
-Taylor hit the damage cap after being struck by Hyper Beam in the third action. Regalecida did not have such luck.

Congratulations, Keldeo! You advance into the semifinals. Prizes for this match will be just so:
-Keldeo gets $40 and a HA freebie
-Eta Carinae gets $20 and a HA freebie
-I guess Totodile and I split the ref prize, which makes it $15 for each?

Thanks for the reffings, all, and thanks for the thoroughly entertaining match, Keldeo. Good luck! I'll take a Toxic Boost Zangoose please!
