[15] Vipera Magnifica vs Lilycolo (ref: Superbird)

DQ: 5 days

Banned/Restricted Moves: OHKOs, Pain Split, moves that KO the user; direct recovery is restricted to 1 use in the match, and Chills are restricted to 5 uses
Arena: Santalune City

Like an emerald in the rough, this town in the center-south of Kalos glows verdant with lush grass and forest green roofs mottled with rustic pavement and ancient stone walls. The battle begins in the circular fountain plaza at the very center of the city, from which most else can be seen, including the majestic Trainer's School right across, the great Bug-Type Gym in the distance, and the tables of several small cafés and restaurants in the fountain area, although most seem dwarfed by comparison to the notable establishment atop a hill nearby.

For this round of the tournament, each trainer's Pokémon will be wearing a specified hat from the Santalune Boutique. Each hat grants its wearer the ability to use certain moves (usually three), and often adds an Ability to the wearer's current Abilities as well. After five rounds, the currently worn hats will be replaced by another set of two hats, again chosen at random. The hats' descriptions and effects are as follows:
  • Bamboo Sprig Hat: A round cap that closely resembles Pangoro, bringing about an aloof sense of menace for the hat seeker that's not to be messed with. Grants the moves Sky Uppercut, Crunch, and Parting Shot, along with the Scrappy ability.
  • Boater: A nifty straw hat that keeps the head cool in sunshine and protected in the storm, perfect for weathering a long voyage. Grants the moves Rain Dance, Hurricane, and Tailwind, along with the Swift Swim ability.
  • Camo Cap: A beanie that blends right into the wilderness with its military-grade motif, complete with grenades and reinforcements, enabling its wearer to move in and out of cover -- or maybe their opponent just doesn't want to be seen with someone who actually wears camo. Grants the moves Egg Bomb, Night Slash, and Attack Order, along with the Sniper ability.
  • Exotic Cap: A repurposed casquette with bold patterns, for those who aim to make an unusual fashion statement and also don't mind looking like they have a toadstool for a head. Grants the moves Hex, Venom Drench, and Infestation, along with the ability Effect Spore.
  • Fedora: A distinctive kind of hat that has been through many associations in pop culture, and we're pretending for our own sake that the most recent one is Indiana Jones. Grants the moves Rock Slide, Bulldoze, and Power Whip, along with the ability Sand Rush.
  • Felt Hat: A porkpie hat famously worn by a trainer that Professor Sycamore placed all of his faith in. Grants the moves Spiky Shield, Mystical Fire, and Water Shuriken.
  • Knit Cap: A woolly, tight-fitting beanie with which one can not only keep warm, but thrive in the cold. Grants the moves Blaze Kick, Frost Breath, and Hail, along with the ability Ice Body.
  • Logo Cap: A snapback with a readily recognizable sigil that's associated with the Kalos Pokémon League. Grants the moves Gyro Ball, Dragon Tail, Flame Charge, and Clamp.
  • Sports Cap: A polyester cap for athletic types who want to sprint and make sparks fly when the sun is out. Grants the moves Quick Attack, Acrobatics, and Electro Ball, along with the ability Unburden.

A deal is a deal, I guess

Go, Master Belch!

Open with Sky Uppercut. Then use Dragon Pulse. Finish up with another Sky Uppercut. Switch to Shock Wave if he has clones. Use Acid Armor if he is protecting or you can't hit him.

Sky Uppercut / Shock Wave / Acid Armor ~ Dragon Pulse / Shock Wave / Acid Armor ~ Sky Uppercut / Shock Wave / Acid Armor

Rex, do you know why I chose you? Because you are honestly my best Pokémon. Don't tell the others.

This is, truthfully, going to be pretty simple. First, Hypnotize the goo until it falls asleep. Then, inflict horrible nightmares upon it. Lastly, if you have time, eat the dreams for health. Repeat the process if he awakens.

This battle wasn’t the first to start, but start it did anyway, in a nice section of town where no one else was already battling. The two victors of round one stepped towards the middle of what was now the arena, and shook hands. One of them reminded the other about some sort of agreement as they walked towards their respective sides of the soon-to-be-battlefield, and the other sighed and confirmed this arrangement, pulling a poké ball from his belt and tossing it towards the field. From the flash of light popped out a slimy purple creature - darker purple than a ditto, which kind of dampened the referee’s mood, and taller, with a more distinct form. At least, this thing didn’t look like it had any sort of shape-shifting powers. From the other end of the battlefield, the other trainer threw out her own pokémon - a meowth, who stood with a giddy smile, both arms raised for good luck and good fortune, staring down his opponent.

Before the battle could begin, the referee took out the two hats he’d been given, and placed one on each battler’s head. Now the combatants could battle in style, wearing the fantastic woven-from-Santalune-forest-bug-pokémon-silk-by-local-workers hats, decided the referee as he raised his flags to declare the start of the battle.

Immediately, Rex bounded forward, getting a bit closer to Master Belch, who began to crawl forward himself in return. But Rex was much faster, and stopped short - and as soon as he did, he sat down and put one paw on the ground, lifting the other one up. And then he slowly put it back down. And then he slowly raised it up again, and back down, and back up, and back down.

Master Belch slowly came to a stop as he curiously watched the Meowth’s paw. What was his opponent…doing…? He was feeling a little bit sleepy. Actually, no, he was feeling a lot sleepy. The sudden thought that he wasn’t supposed to be sleeping because he’d only just woken up from a nap appeared in his mind for a brief second, and disappeared just as quickly as his eyes fell shut and his gelatinous head descended to rest on the rest of his body.

That was just what Rex was after. Cautiously, attempting not to make any noise, the Meowth approached his sleeping opponent, glancing curiously down at the Sliggoo. And then, a sinister grin came over the Meowth’s face, and he leaned over his opponent, both arms outstretched and claws out. Though Master Belch was deeply asleep and clearly couldn’t see Rex’s intimidating display, he gave a visible shudder in his sleep as his dreams descended into darkness. It was no longer a comfortable continuation of his nap from earlier - now, he was relieving some terrible trauma, except it was worse.

They had been trying to get the Ditto under control, and Master Belch had known that, but he’d taken the opportunity anyway. What a stupid, stupid thing to do. He was young, then, swayed by the promise of a good time, unaware that a good time was having his slime mixed with that of the promiscuous lighter-purple blob. The more he tried to pull his own gelatinous mass out of the soup that their bodies were now a part of, the more he seemed pulled in. His horror grew, continuously, and he screamed out for the Ditto to stop. But it refused. It just kept staring at him with those beady black eyes and that small, innocent smile. That terrible, creepy—

And then the Ditto began to dissolve. No, that wasn’t quite right; it was pulled away from him, the particles of its body neatly flowing out of Master Belch’s own and returning to the creature as it was sucked towards the sky. The sky began to brighten, becoming a bright white color, and then fade away, and was that a Meowth there looking over him what was going on oh god how long was he asleep take this you stupid cat.

The last purple orb dragged itself out of Master Belch’s body and disappeared into Rex’s hand, just as the Sliggoo’s eyes snapped open. The slime creature blinked once, and then his pupils met those of Rex’s. The Meowth’s eerie smile quickly became a terrified grimace, and didn’t have time to transition any further before Master Belch extended itself quicker than a Sliggo should have been able to and delivered a powerful blow to the bottom of Rex’s chin with its head - powerful enough to send the Meowth flying backwards and make him land harshly on the ground. Rex bounced once, but then landed on his feet, and growled, glaring at Master Belch, who returned the expression. The battle had begun, and neither side was very happy.

Great job, Rex!

Now, let's spit out a gigantic Substitute. Hide behind your magnificent beast and start singing merrily away.

If: you can't land a hit because Protect, switch to Feint.

Also, the action your sub dies, spit out a new tiny one.

Large Sub ~ Round/Feint/Small Sub ~ Round/Feint/Small Sub sandwich

Proposition: We destroy the substitutes almost as soon as they appear. Dragon Pulse thrice. That way, Rex is guaranteed to waste two of his turns setting up substitutes.

Dragon Pulse x 3

Also, Superbird, don't forget to add a 1% EXP bonus for Belch's attacks ^_^

Rex decided to channel his frustration into art. Specifically, the moment the round began, he jumped over to a patch of grass near the road, and began to use his claws to dig up a bunch of dirt. Not to unearth or bury something, though - no one who took Pokémon battling seriously would consider that to be something a pokémon would do, after all - but rather, to get a nice pile of dirt. Rex worked quickly, and before long he had a sufficiently large pile for his purposes, which he quickly placed both paws on and channeled part of his life energy into.

The Substitute sprang to life just in time to take a purplish beam of energy Master Belch had launched. Rex was caught by surprise when his self-portrait sculpture knocked into him from the impact, but recovered quickly enough, and took a step back, and began to sing. A nice, beautiful song, completely contrasting with his opponent’s fierce attack, that made the battle’s few spectators smile. That is, until projectile musical notes began to appear around Rex and fly lazily towards Master Belch.

The Sliggoo made a token attempt to move his body out of the way, but it clearly wasn’t feasible for him to dodge the attack. Instead, he just cringed as he weathered the tirade of quarter and eighth notes, and began to charge up another Dragon Pulse, which he launched after a few seconds. This one had the same effect as the last one, and it was just barely enough to punch through the clay Meowth’s chest, almost catching Rex, who was standing behind his creation. The Substitute immediately, sharply, stopped moving, and collapsed in a heap to the ground, its life force spent in absorbing those few attacks.

So, of course, the logical course of action at this point was for Rex to build another one. Or, as seemed more convenient to him, to rebuild the same one. In a single short leap, he was kneeling over his fallen Substitute, and he immediately began to reform the creature, pouring more of his life force inside of it to make it stand up again.

But it was imperfect - the Substitute was smaller than it had been before, and its design seemed more rushed, more filled with conspicuous imperfections - a whisker missing here, a little scratch there, a small crack on the faux-coin on its head. Not that anyone really had much time to notice - Master Belch took the logical course of action, as he saw it, and blasted the thing with another Dragon Pulse immediately. With the beam’s impact, the doll exploded, and Rex had to jump all the way back to where he’d started the battle to avoid any damage. Two of his creations, gone now, and that slug creature didn’t even look tired yet. Indeed, Master Belch was growing more and more confident - maybe he wouldn’t even need to pull that Sky Uppercut strategy if he could keep his foe at bay with ranged combat.

~Sorry about that, VM, fixed it now. It’d be pretty cool if the pokémon listing at the beginning of the battle listed that.
~VM commands first

We have to keep up the pressure, Belch! Fire away with another set of Dragon Pulses. Use Sky Uppercut if Dragon Pulse can't be used due to Torment or any other reasons. If you ever find yourself asleep again, Snore away.

(Dragon Pulse / Sky Uppercut / Snore) x 3

Yeah. It's really unfortunate, but I don't have much choice but to call it here. A shame, too - I was really looking forward to reffing this one.

Lilycolo is disqualified. I don't have the power to close this battle in the database, so I'll go ahead and let Metallica Fanboy or Zhorken take care of that.

Alright, so the prizes are as follows: VM gets $20 and a Rare Candy, Lilycolo gets nothing, Master Belch gets 2 EXP and Rex gets 1 EXP, and Superbird gets $18.

I'll see about wrapping up the dB stuff soon.

I fixed all the tournament battles' refs in the db; you should be able to close it now. It'll automatically give out the usual prizes and I'll distribute the remainder myself.
