The Battle for Asber

Round Eight, Act One

Mewtwo's only just made it up to its high-altitude getaway, but already unwanted visitors are finding their way in. Mewtwo frowns in Umbra's general direction, then lays a hand on Darkrai's shoulder and, in the blink of an eye, returns the two of them to the thick of the fray.

And it's gotten rather thicker since they were last down here; the sky is crawling with new pokemon, and Mewtwo gives a resigned sigh as a couple of them let out angry cries upon the arrival of the legendaries. How tiresome.

What's most salient about the situation for Darkrai, though, is that it's rather less peaceful here than high above. Mr. Wonderful is still screeching away, making the most unholy noise, and even Darkrai's deep, unnatural healing sleep can't withstand an assault by Mr. Wonderful's godawful uproar. The legend shudders and opens bleary eyes, its headache gone but its energy reserves drained and its ears ringing.

Not to mention that it doesn't really know what to do next. Snoring is just kind of a thing that happens, when you're asleep. Now that it's awake, Darkrai really doesn't know where to go with it. It thinks for a bit, then lets out a noise like a buzzsaw that peters out sheepishly after Mewtwo gives it a meaningful look. Really? As though this place needs more noise pollution.

The air is tense; no pokémon seems particularly inclined to make a move, all eyes on the legendaries that have returned to their midst. As Team Asber waits, L'arc turns about and, with some generous clapping of his great wings, blasts an intense burst of wind over Kupo. The rotom leans away, grimacing, as the attack teases at her essence. Her red card glows, runes flashing briefly across its surface, then crumbles into dust, its powers placing a seal on the battlefield that will prevent pokémon from using defog in the future.

And from there, several things happen at once. Giratina begins to glow green, preparing an energy shield to aid its team, but Jet has been waiting for just such an opportunity. The murkrow flicks a narrow beam of dark energy at the forming safeguard, hoping to tear it away from its creator and steal its power for his own side. The first part goes to plan, at least--the thin line of dark energy zips across the arena and wraps itself around the cloud of green light that marks the safeguard's gathering energy and drags it in Jet's direction. After that point, though, things go awry; a second bolt of darkness, slower than the first, lances through the air and snags the safeguard away from Jet's attack, pulling it off in a different direction. The murkrow caws angrily and twists his head around to see where it's going off to. And who should he see but his own teammate, Medusa, reaching out to grab the ball of energy as her snatch draws it near.

The safeguard blooms around the druddigon, and in a few moments the light has spread to protect Jet as well, but the murkrow still isn't pleased. Was that really necessary? Medusa catches him looking and can only shrug. She had been waiting for that safeguard too, after all; it's not like she was trying to steal Jet's glory or anything. The murkrow isn't going to let it go that easily, though. He makes his displeasure known in the loudest way possible, and it's not long before Medusa's roaring back arguments of her own, all the louder for the fact that it's hard to hear over Mr. Wonderful's caterwauling. Despite the trainers' best efforts to calm their pokémon down, their argument only continues to escalate.

While its teammates bicker, Frost moves in eerie silence to get a clear line of sight to Kupo. A blinding bolt of blue energy shoots from the cryogonal's mouth towards the rotom, and Mort swoops along in its wake, cackling madly as the air around him steams with condensation. Kupo recoils as the ice beam hits home, and a moment later Mort, now no more than a fuming cloud of ice crystals and chill, passes straight through one of L'arc's outstretched wings.

In the haunter's wake a thick crust of ice forms, plastering the togekiss' feathers together beneath a crystalline lattice and freezing his wing in place. L'arc's flight wobbles, and he lists to one side, one wing suddenly much heavier than the other. It is only when the togekiss panics that his problems really start, though. He overcompensates for the frozen wing by desperate flapping from the good one, nearly puts himself into a tailspin, and is soon spiraling down through the air.

Mewtwo sighs and, with a snap of its tail, goes sailing across the arena, positioning himself below L'arc so the panicking togekiss lands on his shoulders. L'arc grips hard with his talons, holding his stiff, frozen wing out awkwardly to one side as he tries to get a grip on himself. The togekiss' chest is pressed right up against the back of Mewtwo's head, and the legend irritably flicks a couple of feathers away from its eyes. No need to get so worked up. That will melt soon enough.

Once she's sure her teammate's safe, Kupo is quick to put up a barricade to take the bite out of any future ice beams. Sparks crackle across the rotom's body as she calls a light screen into existence, a golden bubble springing up around her, then around each of her teammates in turn. And in no time at all, the rotom is grateful that she's taken the time to do so. Aries, drifting slowly back down towards the thick of the battle, is gathering energy from the sun, and almost immediately after the light screen appears it is tested by a thick column of golden energy.

Kupo weathers the solarbeam with good grace, but is significantly more troubled by a shadow ball that comes tearing out of nowhere. Umbra, still invisible, has been plummeting ever since Darkrai and Mewtwo vanished; and now, at last, he's within striking range of his target. A second shadow ball swiftly follows the first, this one pitched by Mr. Wonderful, of all pokémon. At last growing tired of trolololing his heart out, the spiritomb closes his mouth and lets a wisp of his essence drift free, growing slowly until it reaches respectible projectile size. The light screen saps much of its energy, as it did from Umbra's before it, but Kupo is looking a bit put-upon nonetheless.

Round Eight, Act Two

Medusa and Jet's squabble is brought to an abrupt end when Giratina, annoyed by the failure of its earlier safeguard, makes another attempt to set one up. Jet stops in mid-screech when a faint green light appears overhead. In an instant he's swung around, releasing a tendril of darkness at the distant target. Medusa's doing the same down below, though, and once again two snatches converge on the same attack. As before, Jet's is the first to reach its target, but Medusa's wins in the end. And this time, the dragon does nothing to hide her smugness as the energy of the safeguard merges into the one already glowing over her scales.

It's little consolation to Giratina that the theft of its safeguard is causing such strife among its opponents, but for Darkrai it is quite convenient that Jet goes off on another angry tirade. The murkrow doesn't notice the shadowy legend drifting closer, bright blue eyes trained on the battery clutched between his claws. Jet's yelling is cut off with a choking noise as Darkrai seizes him by the throat and rips the cell battery from his talons with its free hand. The legend casts the murkrow aside contemptuously, then raises the cell battery and inspects it with interest. What a funny little human trinket for a murkrow to covet. Hopefully it will prove useful, though how, Darkrai is sure it can't imagine.

Another ice beam cuts through the air, trained on Kupo as before. Mort grins as his fellow ice-type's attack hits home. The haunter has gotten over his temporary disappointment at failing to send L'arc plummeting to his doom and is looking forward to causing a little more havoc. A shadow ball grows between his hands, and he hurls it after the ice beam, laughing and clapping in delight as it slams into Kupo.

It's not only enemies that have their eyes fixed on the rotom, though. Mewtwo's been watching her as well, and unlike his opponents, he recognizes just what she intends to do. Static electricity crackles over her body, and she goes on bravely charging despite the harrying by her opponents.

Oh, so that's what you're going to try, is it? Mewtwo chuckles. A fine idea. But let me show you how it's really done! Mewtwo raises a fist over his head, lightning snaking around its fingers. The legend holds it there a moment, gathering power, then opens its hand. Myriad lightning bolts leap free, stabbing out in all directions and striking friend and foe alike. Darkrai's eyes widen in surprise as the cell battery in its hand explodes, drawing off the electricity that would otherwise have struck the legend and granting it a panic-induced adrenaline boost. Meanwhile, L'arc luxuriates in the power seeping from his electirizer as it converts the dangerous charge into tamer energies.

But those are the only two to enjoy the attack. The light screen around the legends reduces the damage they take, but it's an unpleasant jolt nonetheless. The damage it does to the defenders, of course, is more severe. Even Aries and Medusa, resistant as they are to electricity, shudder as Mewtwo's attack washes over them. At least they have their safeguard to protect them from the attack's debilitating side-effects, though. It's Kupo herself that finds herself unable to shake off the electricity's grip.

Nevertheless, there's little opportunity to recover from Mewtwo's discharge before the next goes off. Kupo's attack had been building too long to be delayed by a little paralysis, and within seconds her own discharge stabs out across the arena. This time it is Darkrai, no longer protected by its cell battery, that suffers the aftereffects of the attack, its murderous gaze turned from watching a tormented Jet shiver and convulse to look reproachfully at its new teammate. Meanwhile, L'arc watches quietly from his perch on Mewtwo's shoulder, one wing still held wearily out straight. Kupo's doing her best, but it's clear she can't take much more punishment, and someone needs to be there to carry on with the discharges if she should fall.

When the last popping tendrils of electricity fade away, Team Asber slowly begins to recover. Aries, resistant to discharge as he is, has little difficulty picking up where he left off in terms of charging his solarbeam. Truth be told, he's getting a little bored with slinging the same attack over and over again, but it seems to work well enough, so he supposes he can't complain. The searing beam of light strikes a panting Kupo, knocking her into a forward tumble.

Meanwhile, Umbra has used its temporary invisibility to sneak up dangerously close to Mewtwo. The legend recoils with surprise and disgust as a foul-smelling, oily liquid materializes out of empty air and sprays along its side. L'arc grumbles and shifts uneasily on his perch, trying to get as far from the toxic as possible. Meanwhile, Mewtwo seems more disgusted by the toxic than anything. Its lips pull back in a snarl as it gingerly reaches down and swipes a bit of the stuff off on its finger. Mewtwo inspects it with distaste, then flicks it away. What's left behind on its skin is already starting to burn its way into the legends' bloodstream. Think you're safe because I can't see you? it asks, turning to look directly at the air where Umbra is hovering. There is nothing hidden before the power of my mind!

While Mewtwo glares daggers at Umbra, who is very still and hoping desperately that the legend is just bluffing, Mr. Wonderful prepares and launches another shadow ball at Kupo. Forging projectiles honestly just isn't as fun as singing, but at least it has more visibly more damaging results.

Round Eight, Act Three

By now, Giratina's utterly given up any thoughts of setting up a safeguard. That's fine, though--really, the legendary enjoys getting to cut loose much more than it does playing the defensive. An arc of darkness rips through the air, slamming into Mort and knocking the haunter for a loop. The haunter is certainly surprised, but he recovers quickly enough and turns his attention to Kupo once more.

L'arc's having none of that, though. Team Asber's been picking on his friend something fierce ever since she showed up on the battlefield, and the togekiss has had enough. True, his own attack will harm her as well, but it won't be nearly as bad as what she'd get from Mort, and if he's able to take a couple of them out with his attack, well, that's less she'll have to worry about in the future.

The buzz of electricity is loud in Mewtwo's ears, and he hardly has to turn his head to know what the togekiss is planning. My turn! the legend announces, once more gathering a fistful of electricity and unleashing a terrifying discharge before any of the other pokémon can react. The wave of energy sweeps out across the field, electrocuting friend and foe alike. And, just for a moment, the whole battlefield goes pitch black.

Mewtwo's eyes widen, its interest diverted from the fact that, as predicted, Umbra is reeling from its proximity to the attack, still invisible but certainly suffering. It doesn't get time to properly assess the situation, though; L'arc's discharge has been building, and it goes off almost immediately, boosted by the extra energy fed to the togekiss through his electirizer. Mewtwo is further distracted by the fact that the electric attack coursing straight into its body is enough to freeze its muscles in place, even as, some distance away, Darkrai lets out a roar of complaint, its already-hampered body rebelling still further as another discharge hits home.

Nevertheless, Mewtwo can't miss what comes next. Reality shivers, and for a few seconds a light rain mists the air in the battlefield. In the next instant, the smell of brownies baking overwhelms all else. Day flicks to night and back again, and several pokémon feel a sudden urge to forget their previous commands and just use metronome. HighMoon smacks the pilfered referee baton against her leg, trying to get it back under control. It still fizzes and sparks with residual charge; clearly all the electricity flying around hasn't been kind to it.

Mewtwo can't see this, of course, but its powerful brain is already coming to grips with the situation. There's something here it hadn't considered before...

It is brought back to attention by Kupo's cry of distress. The rotom looks absolutely dreadful, only barely able to stay aloft under her own power. Frost is gathering another ice beam, face impassive as it prepares the destructive attack, and there's no question where it's going to fly. L'arc growls and beats his frozen wing ineffectually, powerless to aid his friend. The ice beam hits home, and the light screen protecting the legends' team vanishes immediately as Kupo succumbs to unconsciousness. The red beam of a pokéball catches the rotom before she can tumble to the ground, and HighMoon replaces the device on her belt with obvious regret. Meanwhile, the baton in her hand shudders and fizzes, and a transient (and very confused) farfetch'd flock obscures Mewtwo and its guests from view for a few seconds.

Once the quacking has died away, however, and L'arc can see the battlefield properly again, it becomes clear that life is about to get much more difficult. Team Asber has shaken off the last of the electricity, taken in the fact of Kupo's demise, and fixed its attention on what it considers the next most tempting target--L'arc.

Mort juggles a ball of blue light between his disembodied hands, then hurls it forward, letting it unfurl into a proper ice beam as it goes. No sooner has it blasted into L'arc's back than a glowing bolt of energy arcs down from on high and follows suit. Aries chirps happily to himself as his natural gift hits home. It's great to get a chance to show off his hidden abilities--or anything other than solarbeam, really--even if they do end up being a bit boring and normal-typed.

L'arc is already starting to look put-upon, his talons clutching ever tighter at Mewtwo's shoulders and his mouth set in a grimace. Jet and Medusa, having grown tired of their fighting at last, are finally looking to go on the offensive. Jet glows golden, the feathers of his outstretched wings streaming brilliant orange as he sheathes himself in the power of pure flying energy. L'arc closes his eyes and braces himself as the murkrow swoops in for an attack, preceded by a raging sheet of energy. Nevertheless, the sky attack nearly manages to tear him free of his perch, and Mewtwo definitely isn't pleased with the way the togekiss' claws twist desperately into his flesh. And no sooner has Jet swept past, the flames outlining his body dying away, than Mr. Wonderful contributes a powerful attack of his own.

The ghost's essence whirls and glows as he pours all his strength into one stupendous attack, a ball of white-hot energy growing in the air in front of him. L'arc hunkers down against Mewtwo's back and, moments later, a blazing column of energy engulfs him, searing feathers and threatening, once again, to send L'arc spinning off into the void. When at last the hyper beam dies away, L'arc is slumping with exhaustion, but at least reassured that it's over for now--only to have Medusa come flapping in, ponderous but determined, and seize the togekiss' good wing in her jaws. The togekiss screeches and flaps as best he can, but Medusa is dogged, holding tight while RespectTheBlade cheers her on.

Mewtwo hasn't exactly been enjoying the bombardment, either. Having the togekiss clinging to its shoulders was uncomfortable enough; now that it's getting knocked every which way by pokémon out for L'arc's blood, the legend decides it's simply not going to put up with this anymore. Enough! Mewtwo roars, wrenching L'arc free of his shoulders and holding him up with psychic power. A couple of shakes and Medusa is dislodged, the surprised druddigon falling back to a more safe vantage point.

It's been a lovely battle, Mewtwo says, floating L'arc down so that the togekiss and his puzzled riders are drifting directly in front of him. But I have to admit, I wasn't expecting it would take so long to destroy all of you. To be honest, I'm getting rather bored. I must thank you, though, for delivering just what we needed to escape.

Medusa squeaks as Giratina abruptly materializes next to him; the druddigon had no notion that the ghost had been drifting over to their location. The dragon looms over Mewtwo, and Darkrai slowly makes its way over to join them, snapping a parting dark pulse at Mort while the ghost gapes, trying to figure out what's going on. His angry yell is lost in the boom of Mewtwo's pronouncement. You thought you could stop us from destroying your precious region? For now, I suppose, you have succeeded. But don't think you've seen the last of us. You haven't even seen the beginning of our revenge. Enjoy your peace while it lasts!

Mewtwo reaches out and grabs the referee baton from HighMoon, holding it above its head. Reality convulses, the arena dissolving into chaos, by turns burning and frigid, airless and blustery, flashing from one contorted, alien landscape to the next. When things settle back to something resembling a normal state, if plagued by an unusual amount of airborne pasta, the legends are gone, and with them, the meteors that had been threatening overhead. L'arc, no longer supported by Mewtwo's psychic abilities, lets out a startled squeak and begins to drop, but a couple of desperate flexes of his iced wing are enough to shatter the last of the coating left by Spine Chiller. He is the only one to move; the rest of the trainers and pokémon are transfixed by shock. Below, fires continue to blaze in ASB Central, sending up tall columns of smoke against which their teammates are just visible, waiting far below and still unaware that the battle is over.

I am going to end this here. I made several mistakes in the design and oversight of this event, and these led to an increasing amount of drama and hostility as the battle went on. I don't want there to be any more bad blood over this. While I had made plans to restructure this battle to try and address these issues and carry on with it, some particularly nasty fighting convinced me that at this point, it would really be best just to end things and hope to do better in the future. I do not know the details of what went on--it is possible that I've blown things completely out of proportion or, perhaps, the people involved are really lucky that I can't see most of what they were doing. Attacking other players because of something they did in a game is completely unacceptable, and let me be clear--if you ever feel the need to follow people to unrelated web sites to harass them about something that went on in ASB, and I find out about it, you will be out of the game. If you have a problem with how someone is acting in ASB, you bring the issue to me, and I will deal with it as fairly as I can.

I apologize for the way things have turned out. This event was intended to be a fun change of pace, but as a result of mismanagement, it became anything but. In the future, I hope that I can prepare an even that will overcome the weaknesses of this one, but unfortunately there were problems that I could not have anticipated without first making the mistakes that I did with this one.

In particular, I apologize to the people who wanted to participate, but will now not get the chance. It's unfortunate that everyone has to suffer because of the actions of a handful of people, but at this point I think that ending the game is for the best. I hope that some people had at least a little fun with this, at one point or another.

Prizes have been distributed. If you showed signs of life and made some effort at contributing to your team's efforts, you should have received $10 and a randomly-selected plate. All pokémon that participated in the battle were awarded 1 EXP.

If you want to talk to me about something BfA-related, you can contact me in private. I won't look kindly on anyone who wants to try and stir up more drama over this.
