Arena: Alto Mare's Canals at night

"Alto Mare is an isolated island between the south-western coast of Johto, near Azalea Town, and the Southeastern part of Hoenn.(Bulbagarden)" In lieu of roads, the island is composed of canals and narrow streets, with bridges and boats being the main form of transportation in the populated areas. At night, the city portion of Alto Mare is lit by lanterns and very limited modern street lamps, leaving the canals aglow. Due to the limited and cramped quarters on land, water, flying, and most Pokemon with the ability to "surf" or swim are suggested for this round.

Other: Only first/second evolutionary stage Pokemon and water/flying/normal types please

Alright, Ace is up (as amusing as it would be to have a Totodile on Totodile battle).

Little dog, you're faster, so start with a Thunder Wave. Next, Giga Impact like a boss, finished up with a Thunder Fang. For any action he's Protecting, or if you're Attracted, use Work Up instead. If he's dived down underwater where you can't reach him, Surf.

Okay! Since you're on land, let's start off and Protect yourself from that Thunder Wave, and follow with a Counter, then create a medium Substitute.

Instead of the usual travel by league-owned Ralts using teleport, the trainers and the referee opted for a more scenic but time consuming way of travel. The three had agreed that travel by Staraptor was the way to go. It was Jude's first battle after all; nothing would make a battle more memorable than a grand tour of the skies of Asber and a flight into neighboring regions. Ole_schooler had had quite some experience at flying and had little difficulty during the trip to Alto Mare. Jude, although a novice, quickly took to flying and enjoyed herself as he flew into the sunset over the beautiful architecture of Alto Mare, which was lined by dozens of water canals. The referee, however, didn't have as grand of a time as the other two. He had to stop a few times on the way to Alto Mare due to air sickness. Trying to sound cheery, the referee led both trainers forward and chose a suitable location for battle. Whether night or day, Alto Mare definitely was a sight to behold. The three went past the bell tower and admired the architecture of the island. After delving into the heart of the city and following a couple of twists and turns, they reached a narrow street perfect for battle. The water was a beautiful yellow-orange hue from the sunset. A few moments passed by, and the sun had gone down. On cue, the street lights simultaneously lit up, illuminating the water in the canals and giving it the occasional glimmer.

Jude was the first to send out a pokemon. He quickly selected a pokeball from her belt and flung it into the air. A red flash revealed an energetic little blue dinosaur with red spikes running down his back. At full height, Atlas only reached Jude's knees. Atlas quickly glanced around and was amazed by his surroundings. He wouldn't mind spending a week or two doing nothing but admiring the sights here. He looked longingly into the water as a red flash of light revealed his opponent. Ole_schooler had sent out ace, a feisty little Herdier, which was slightly bigger than Atlas. Unlike Atlas, however, Ace wasn't fond of the water. She tried avoiding the mental image of her accidentally falling off the narrow streets into the canals.

As soon as the battle started, Atlas concentrated on the air around him. Using up a bit of energy, he managed to create a transparent shield around himself. The light entering the sphere became somewhat distorted. Ace, aware that a thunder wave would be no good, started pumping herself up. This'll be an easy battle. No way that little shrimp can put up a fight. She scoffed at the thought of Atlas beating her as she went on to perform some exercises to warm herself up.

Ace gritted her teeth. She knew she was going to have to concentrate for her next attack. Quickly, she collected her energy, and orange spurts of energy started leaping up around her as she dashed towards Atlas. She ran as quick as she could and hit Atlas straight on. Atlas was thrown off his feet and heaved from the sheer strength of the attack. However, unfortunately for Ace, Atlas had been ready. While falling to the ground, Atlas swung his tail around, hitting Ace and redirecting the force of her attack back at her. Ace was thrown off balance, and momentarily, both pokemon lay on the ground in pain, unable to move.

After getting back to her feet, Ace was furious at her opponent. How insolent! To attack was one thing, but to use your opponent's attack to hit your opponent was another. She bared her fangs, and electricity started crackling near her teeth. With a howl of rage, Ace bit hard into the shoulder of Atlas, who twitched from the shock of the electricity. He buckled over in pain but quickly recovered his footing. He called forth some of the water from the canals. Responding to Atlas, a tiny stream of water arced through the air and landed in front of Atlas. He waved his paw, and the water shaped itself to resemble a Totodile. Atlas then spit a small spurt of water towards the aquatic construct, giving it some of his life force.

Good, Atlas! Now that you have your substitute up, I want you to give her a good ol' Focus Punch. Knock her into the water, if you can. If she tries to counter, protect, detect, or what-have-you, Dig as best you can into the asphalt and avoid the water for now. Should your first attack be a success and you get her in the water, I want you to use Ice Beam and try to freeze her in place for a moment, then finish with Brick Break! If you end up underground, give yourself a boost with Dragon Dance; if Herdier follows you, proceed with Brick Break! However, if she uses protect, detect, or is otherwise out of reach, continue with Dragon Dance.

Arg Ace why don't you learn Earthquake. That would make my life so much easier right now.

Regardless. Focus Punch only works if your foe does not take damage, yeah? But he's got that substitute, which means you can't really hit him right now. Murphle. Guess you'll just take the hits for now, and be glad the damage cap is relatively high. Giga Impact to get the sub out of the way. (Waste of energy? Overkill? Pah, inconsequential!) If the substitute is gone (it should be) Thunder Wave, regardless if if you're in the water or not. If it's not gone, curse your lack of accuracy and Giga Impact again, jumping out of the water if you have to. Finally, if the 'dile still, somehow, has a substitute, forget it all and just Chill. If there's no sub, but he's not paralyzed, Thunder Wave it up. If there's no sub, and he's paralyzed, Thunderbolt him from wherever you are. (Hopefully you'll still be able to generate and shoot electricity even if you're frozen in ice; if you are not, wait until he breaks you out to attack.)

Atlas quickly went on to infuse his fist with energy. As he did this, he drew his glowing fist back. He wasn't worried about losing concentration on his attack because of his handy substitute. He knew he would be protected for while he was preparing his blow. Ace was really angry at this point. Collecting all her energy once again, she dashed straight towards her opponent. As she rushed forward, oranges sparks of energy filled the air. To her dismay, instead of knocking Atlas of his feet, Ace's blow was absorbed by something wet. Ace recoiled hastily after getting her fur wet. The aquatic construct lost its form, but in its place was Atlas' fist which connected solidly with Ace's body. Ace was sent through the air and tossed into the water.

Atlas wasn't content with simply flinging his opponent in the air. After he hit his opponent, he opened his mouth wide, revealing a glowing ball of blue crackling energy. The air around Atlas' mouth was notably colder, and both trainers stared as a beam of ice headed straight towards Ace who was panicking in the water. To ole_schooler's relief, the frosty beam had failed to solidify the water around his panic-stricken pokemon. Ace was flailing wildly in the water. Water wasn't her element and it showed. She barely had enough focus to send a tiny jolt of electricity through the air towards her opponent.

The electrical energy didn't pain Atlas. It was simply shocking. For some reason, his body hardly responded to his thoughts. Ace, on the other hand, had managed to settle down. She had managed to remain afloat by paddling her legs. Just like Atlas' previous attack, Ace opened her mouth to reveal a similar crackling ball of energy. However, unlike the ice beam, the ball of energy was a bright yellow. It buzzed with electricity as it was shot towards Atlas who, with difficulty, jumped in the water and swam next to Ace. As fast as he could, Atlas performed a three-punch combo.

Excellent! Now you are faster, and with more energy, Ace! (Although why the heck does Giga Impact take less energy than Focus Punch? Mechanics I will never understand.)

So, first off, jump onto the land, if you can, and shoot at the 'dile with two Thunderbolts If he's dived down, use Surf instead; if he's protecting, Work Up and delay the thunderbolts until later. (Also, if it takes you an action to get out of the water, move the Thunderbolts down one.) If you ever get in the water, I guess your orders are the same, although get back out onto land if you can. If you've made two successful damaging attacks this round, Work Up.

Argh, paralysis eh? Oh well, let's work with what you've got.

If you can muster the energy(and if she actually makes it there), follow that Herdier on land, Protect yourself from whatever oncoming attack you can and use Ice Beam again! A beam attack shouldn't be impossible to pull together when paralyzed, right? If you can manage it(and especially if she hits you before you can do this), finish with an Avalanche. If you cannot follow her out of the water, Dive down and use Dragon Dance to give yourself a boost before you strike next!

Now, if you can get out of the water but the paralysis is giving you too much trouble, Protect yourself and then Rest for the remaining turns to up your health and remove the effects of paralysis.

Immediately, both trainers commanded their pokemon to get out of the water. Normally, Atlas would've been able to easily outswim Ace. However, his paralysis hindered his ability to swim. After a few moments of swimming, both pokemon eventually manage to get on land.

As if there was no time to spare, Atlas threw up a translucent green shield of energy around him. The sphere would be able to deflect any oncoming attacks. Atlas waited expectantly as Ace started glowing with a light red aura. To his disappointment, Ace simply started pumping herself up. After a few moments of positive reinforcement, Ace felt as confident as ever.

Using her recently boosted power, Ace started crackling with energy. Sparks started flying off of her fur as a massive ball of electricity formed in front of Ace's mouth. With a flick of her tail, the sphere of energy flew straight towards the Totodile.

Atlas' inability to move seemed to dull the pain of the Thunderbolt. He knew he didn't have the upper hand, and in frustration, he started blasting off a string of foul words. A few moments had passed before the Totodile realized he hadn't attacked yet. Quickly, he opened his mouth as wide as he could, and a stream of frigid water headed towards Ace.

Ace was caught off guard by the icy water and wasted a few moments shaking off the frost that collected on her fur. Fully aware that her opponent meant business, she once again sent a ball of fizzing energy towards her opponent. The Thunderbolt crackled and fizzed as it sped through the air, inflicting considerable pain the moment it hit.

Ace twitched for quite some time as the Thunderbolt crashed into his body. In response, he started creating an Avalanche. No, scratch that. He attempted to create an Avalanche. However, he had no idea just how he would go about doing that. He knew what an Avalanche looked like, but he didn't know how to use it. Both frustration and weariness were clearly evident on his face at this point.

(I could have sworn it was a possible egg move for Totodiles? Should've double checked that. My bad!)

Hmn, right then!

I want you to Rest for two actions and do your best to shed yourself of the paralysis, as well as attempt to regain a bit of your health. After you have ceased your rest, and ONLY if Ace comes for you with a physical attack(such as Giga Impact/Take Down/Thunder Fang/etc, basically anything that involves her coming into actual contact with you), Counter it! If she does not use a physical move on you(i.e. thunder/thunderbolt/etc or anything that does not involve her coming into actual contact with you), Protect yourself again!

One thing, ref: Damage cap is 30%, so Atlas' health should be at 10%

Not that I think it matters too much. Ace, Thunder Fang that 'dile out of existence. That should be enough to take it out. If it survives, Wild Charge, then Thunderbolt. /overkill

Jude was evidently starting to lose hope. In a last ditch attempt, he bit his lip, frowned, and told Atlas to rest. He let loose a sigh as he saw a wicked grin start to creep across ole_schooler's face. An electric type move would finish the job.

Atlas dropped to the ground in pain and, without any regard for what Ace might do, simply closed his eyes. He needed to rest now. Trying to doze off, with his eyes shut tight, Atlas started counting Mareep. One Mareep. Two Mareep. Three Mareep. Four Mareep. Five Mareep. Six Mareep. Seven Mareep. Atlas was starting to get frustrated. Apparently, the rush of the battle made it difficult for him to fall asleep. Intent on sleeping, he continued counting Mareep. Eight Mareep. Nine Mareep. Ten Mareep. Suddenly,a jolt of energy spread from his leg towards the other parts of his body, and he was out like a light. Without Atlas noticing, Ace had silently crept over with teeth which were bursting with electric energy. All it took was one little bite for the battle to end.

With that, both trainers recalled their pokemon, ole_schooler giving out a hearty laugh. As congratulations and prizes were given, the two trainers and the referee started heading towards the Staraptor which would take them out of the beautiful place which is Alto Mare and back to Asber.
