Terrain: The Battle Factory

The Battle Factory’s arena is simple but practical: a large clay arena bordered by a two-meter-wide, three-meter-deep trough of water to accommodate water-dependent pokemon and attacks. The ceiling is retractable, allowing weather attacks to be used. Other than that, there’s nothing of note: just wide-open brawling space with nothing to get in your way.

The Battle Factory’s stands are mostly empty, housing only a few bored-looking spectators and one old guy who has apparently fallen asleep. The only enthusiastic-looking attendees are probably members of one of the competitor’s families. The first round of the Championship tournament isn’t the most highly-anticipated event in the history of the League, but for the challengers loitering to one side of the arena, it is just as important as any other match. Doing their best not to show any nervousness they might be feeling, they crane their necks to watch a huge screen mounted on the side wall between them. For now, it shows only their own names and faces, but at a signal from the referee, images of pokemon flash at the bottom of the display, a dizzying cascade of different species.

The randomization seems to last an age for the competitors whose victory may rest on what the computer chooses, but it is really only a few seconds before six images settle on the screen and, with a rattle, six pokéballs are dispensed into depressions below the display. The two trainers step up and select one pokéball each before making their way to the boxes marked off on either side of the arena.

A brief, muted stir of activity sweeps the stands. The League Championship is about to begin, and even the most jaded of spectator’s can’t help but feel a little thrill as the referee calls out the match’s beginning and two pokéballs are hurled into the air.

For this battle, you will be using a rental Pokémon instead of one from your team. The six (only one of each) available to you are the following:

Hitmontop (M) <Intimidate>, Steelix (M) <Sturdy>, Drapion (F) <Sniper>, Mothim (M), Omastar (M) <Shell Armor>, Dratini (F)

2. Kratos Aurion chooses and attacks

Battle Factory? :D Anyway, how convenient. I've been wanting a chance to try a Steelix. So I'll go with him.

Hrm, okay. Well, I just realized that you learn Magnet Rise (ilu Platinum), so go ahead and start with that. Once we've got all 880 pounds of giant metal snake off the ground where they belong, use Curse and then, uh... Rock Polish.

Since Drapion is faster than you are, she might get in a taunt or something. If you are taunted, replace your actions with Earthquake ~ Iron Head ~ Earthquake in that order.

Magnet Rise/Earthquake ~ Curse/Earthquake/Iron Head ~ Rock Polish/Earthquake/Iron Head

Don't be intimidated by the giant flying Steelix, Drapion.

So, we really like dancing, so you should start with Swords Dance and then use Rain Dance. Then you can put all that dancing to good use with an Aqua Tail.

Swords Dance ~ Rain Dance ~ Aqua Tail

- Grinning broadly.

The two trainers hurl their chosen pokéballs into the arena, revealing their picks in twin flashes of light. The creatures that emerge are hardly twins, however; on Athasan's side of the arena, an outsize scorpion swings her tail, drumming her numerous legs against the arena's hard floor. Kratos' fighter is an even more outsize metal snake, who grins down at the drapion. Hmm... bite-sized.

If Drapion is at all intimidated by her opponent's length, she doesn't show it, breaking into an exuberant dance. With her long arms and tail, not to mention her many legs, the swords dance is an intricate affair involving many flailing limbs. Steelix watches with lazy disinterest as his steely segments rotate, magnetic ore deep in his body aligning into a new conformation, while a weak electrical current flows the length of his form. The electromagnetic field that results is enough to counteract the earth's gravity, and with silent, slow grace, Steelix rises straight up into the air until he is floating about six inches above the surface of the arena.
Drapion's swords dance slows to a stop, and the big bug pauses for a moment to wonder at the sight of the levitating steelix. She doesn't rest for long, though, before starting up another dance. Unlike the swords dance, which was mostly crazy flailing, the rain dance requires a considerable amount of scuttling around in complex patterns, with a bit of arm-waving thrown in. The referee fiddles with a remote hanging from her belt, and a low grinding starts up far overhead. A bright shaft of sunlight falls upon the center of the arena, widening slowly as the retractable roof overhead pulls apart. The sunlight is fated to be short-lived, however, as dark clouds bubble into being in the sky far overhead. As the roof locks into its open conformation with a loud clank, the ominous sky releases a torrential downpour on the arena. The spectators in the stands remain sheltered by the roof, but pokémon, trainers, and referee are soon well and truly soaked.
Steelix isn't too fond of water, but the rain doesn't do him any harm. He mutters an ancient, dark incantation to herself, and his mirrored body briefly burns with a deep purple light. His muscles thicken considerably, lending him more power and bulk, but making him considerably more heavy. He dips slightly in the air, but remains steadily levitating about half an inch closer to the ground.

At last, all is in place, and Drapion stops her dancing to rush at Steelix, toothy mouth lolling open and her tail whipping through the air behind her. When she reaches the big metal snake, she swings her tail around, and it throws off a spray of water as it slashes through the air. Unfortunately, the joints in Steelix's body are starting to rotate, his body drifting erratically as waves of motion sweep through it, and Drapion's aim is off. She hisses a violent curse as her tail swings wide, but Steelix takes no notice; his segments are spinning faster and faster, grinding against one another with an awful rasping noise. He works up so much spin that his body becomes no more than a blur, centrifugal force spraying water off him in all directions. The rasping works up to a cutting whine, then dies down again as Steelix's spinning slows, his rock polish complete. The big snake shines all the more brightly for the abrading his segments have received, and the smoothed-down joints more than make up for his now more cumbersome, larger muscles. He hangs in the air like some bizarre missile caught in mid-flight, and enjoys the sight of Drapion clutching her head and growling to herself as she curses her failure.

Eh, don't worry, Drapion. Be happy. You'll hit him next time.

Now that I've finally gotten it into my head to look at Skorupi's egg moves, I've noticed that you can use Confuse Ray. So use it. Then try Acupressure and attempt another Aqua Tail. If for whatever reason it stops raining before you can use Aqua Tail, use Fire Fang instead.

Confuse Ray ~ Acupressure ~ Aqua Tail/Fire Fang

Okay then. Steelix, start by closing your eyes and using Sandstorm. When the Sandstorm is good and ready, wait a bit, open your eyes again and then copy Drapion's fancy new stats with Psych Up. Finish the round off with a hearty +3 (+5 if we're lucky, mmm) Earthquake for good measure.

Despite his increase in speed, Steelix can't quite outdraw Drapion as she leers at him, eyes sparking a weird yellow. Her claws draw complex patterns in the air, leaving glimmering specks in their wake that swirl and dance in constant, sickening motion. A twist of Drapion's claws draws them together into a tight column that shoots across the arena and strikes Steelix square between the eyes.

The big metal snake growls as the illusion settles into his mind, filling his vision with weaving stars and mysterious lights. He shakes his head to banish them, but it does no good; even when he closes his eyes, he finds the flickering specks still swimming in the dark behind his eyelids. Growling, he snaps at the illusionary lights, but they slide easily away from his jaws; as his attempts to catch them become ever more frantic, he eventually slams nose-first into the ground, jaws still working furiously in an attempt to crush the lights between his teeth.

Drapion grins to herself and begins prodding at various regions of her body with her foreclaws and tail, hoping to hit some trigger point that will boost her abilities with a sudden release of energy. And, much to her gratification, one lucky jab does just that, sending a rush of blood to her brain and giving her a sudden sense of clarity and focus. Her senses are sharpened and her thinking faster and more coherent, the better to enjoy the sight of her opponent still struggling in the grip of the confuse ray.

Mounting frustration drives Steelix to thrash all the more wildly, lashing out at his imaginary tormentors, but the illusion only grows stronger as Steelix's control over his emotions weakens. Though the fact that he's levitating goes a little way to ensure that he doesn't hurt himself by slamming against the floor, it can't compensate for the violence of Steelix's angry movements. Steelix twists and thrashes, heedless of collisions with the ground. Drapion's enjoyment of the sight is short-lived, though, as somewhere deep inside the metal snake's buzzing brain the idea emerges to put an end to the confuse ray with one of his most powerful attacks. Raising his tail high, the steelix brings it slamming to the ground and immediately sets off a flurry of tremors.

Despite her numerous legs, Drapion staggers as the earthquake ripples through the arena, her teeth clacking together and an awful shivering running all through her body as the earthquake vibrates on below her feet. Steelix, of course, is defended by the fact that he is floating; Drapion briefly wishes that she were able to do the same. As the earthquake begins to die down, though, she banishes such thoughts in order to concentrate on her next attack--which, this time, she's going to get right.

Drapion approaches the thrashing steelix with some caution, judging her shot carefully and gathering water energy into her tail. This time when she brings the appendage slashing down, it connects with a solid crunch and a great burst of water. Steelix's head is slammed down into the dirt again, though this time not of his own accord; a web of fine cracks radiates across his face from the point where the aqua tail connected. Drapion makes a hissing celebration of her success while Steelix, still woozy, stares up at her in a daze. Meanwhile, the flow of electricity keeping the big snake aloft peters out, and Steelix's entire body settles gently back to the earth, leaving him sprawled across the ground at Drapion's feet.

Mildly confused here. Did Steelix confusefail ~ use Earthquake instead of Psych Up ~ confusefail or what? Just wondering.

Eh, well, that's not good. At least you got that Earthquake in. So hm... let's try this. Magnet Rise until it works, first of all, then Frustration and another Earthquake. If you're taunted on any action then use the other attack for that action instead.

Instead of giving you some set of complicated commands, I'll just tell you to use Acupressure, then Aqua Tail. After that, you can use Acupressure again, but use Aqua Tail instead if you missed with it the first time.

While Steelix continues to lie where he is and blink, trying to think about how he ended up on the ground, Drapion backs off and starts up another fit of random poking in an attempt to augment her stats. This time, an inquisitive jab deadens her body to sensation, shoring up her defenses against the invasion of caustic energy attacks.

Meanwhile, Steelix has recovered enough to pick himself up off the floor and concentrate, however woozily, on his command. Once more his segments rotate in order to bring their magnetic components into opposition with the earth's electromagnetic field, and electricity runs down the length of his body. He rises gently into the air, bobbing a few inches off the floor and staring down at the gap between himself in the earth in slightly cross-eyed bemusement.

Drapion leaves off enjoying her latest power boost and looks over at her floating opponent, then scuttles forward again, swinging a tail dripping more water than can be accounted for by the rain. Steelix squints at her as she approaches, vaguely uneasy, but it's not until the scorpion brings another aqua tail smashing down on his face that he remembers what he should be nervous about--once the incredible pain in his head subsides a bit, anyway.

Though Steelix's chin is slammed into the floor again, this time the rest of his body doesn't follow, and once he recovers from the heavy blow, he stares at Drapion with all-too-clear eyes. The poison type starts to back away, and Steelix follows, slithering through the air. As Drapion breaks into a run, Steelix lunges, grabbing her shoulder in his jaws and tearing her off her feet. Drapion claws at Steelix's face, trying to break free, but Steelix easily lifts her into the air and gives her a good shaking, then slams her against the ground and hurls her halfway across the arena in a fit of anger.

Drapion crashes back to earth in a pile of flailing limbs and scrambles quickly back to her feet. She grumbles to herself and rubs at her shoulder, then gets back to seeking a new pressure point in an attempt to boost her abilities even higher. The sensation that she gets when she jabs at a spot on the side of her neck is familiar: a burst of clarity and focus as her mental prowess jumps perceptibly.

Steelix raises his tail again and brings it crashing down, setting off another earthquake. All the clarity in the world can't protect Drapion against the powerful tremors, and she staggers as ripples of seismic energy tear through her body. The small cracks in the arena caused by the last earthquake widen slightly, and water sloshes out of the trough around the edge of the arena. As the tremors die away, Drapion is quite distressed to find small fissures running through her exoskeleton as well--truly, she's not feeling so on top of this fight anymore.

Okay, so Aqua Tail comes first this round, because of the rain and all that. Then go ahead and use Acupressure again. After that, you can try to put those special attack boosts to good use by trying out your Hidden Power.

Protect against Aqua Tail and waste the last of the rain, first of all. Then give Drapion another taste of that delicious Earthquake, and end with Taunt for easy destruction next round.

It takes Drapion a couple of seconds to collect herself after enduring the earthquake, but she forces herself to get moving as quickly as possible. She knows that her rainstorm will soon be dissipating, and before it goes, she intends to get one last aqua tail in. The poison type limps a bit as she scuttles towards Steelix, her tail spraying water as she swings it back and forth, and her concentration is so much on simply holding the attack and not falling that she doesn't notice how raindrops are bending around Steelix instead of hitting him, as though running down the outside of an invisible bubble.

Drapion brings her tail swinging around, but instead of striking Steelix, it slams into his protect shield with a blast of silver energy that sends numbing shivers running right up Drapion's tail. She staggers back, confused, while Steelix lets the protect drop with a grin. Already the rain is starting to break up, the clouds' fury reduced to no more than a drizzle, and as the magically-summoned storm evaporates, the stadium roof starts to close. Steelix shakes a bit of moisture from his body--good riddance--and slams his tail against the earth, drowning out the rumble of gears high overhead with the rumbling of the ground much closer to home.

All Drapion's frustration at seeing her aqua tail thwarted is eclisped by pain and distress as the earthquake boils up from below. Weakened as she is, the scorpion isn't able to keep her footing, and she collapses to the arena floor, only to be bounced and jostled most unpleasantly across the ground until the earthquake dies away. Once it does, she levers herself up slowly, getting one leg and then another under herself, until she is able to scramble back upright. Once there, she sets about fishing for another pressure point, although perhaps more gingerly than she had before. In the background, Steelix silently settles back to earth.

At last Drapion jabs at a spot that produces an effect--a sudden zing of energy goes twitching out along her appendages, limbering them up and increasing her proprioception. The drapion taps her limbs against the earth in a complex pattern, testing her newly enhanced coordination and agility, then gets back down to business. She can't have Steelix just walking all over her, after all--it's time to strike back! Concentrating on her center of energy, the wellspring of power that drives all her other abilities, the drapion draws out its essence, letting her deepest, most hidden energy flow throughout her body and then on into the air, taking the form of dozens of small globes of sea-green energy. The orbs of power drift in orbit around her body, moving faster and faster until Drapion gives them a hearty shove outward and they zoom off in all directions.

At least a handful of the balls of energy strike Steelix and the big metal snake grunts; though his armor affords him considerable resistance to the attack, Drapion's mental focus is such that the attack stings nonetheless. Still, Steelix makes a show of shaking the attack off, then grins across at Drapion, eyes narrowed. That was Drapion's hidden power? the metal beast wonders aloud. Well, it's no wonder she's in such dire straits now, then. Anything with inner energy that pitiful is never going to amount to anything at all.

Drapion hisses dangerously, eyes flashing, but Steelix only snorts. He's not afraid of that little insect after all. If Drapion wants him to shut up, she's going to have come over here and make him.

Drapion doesn't feel like budging, but neither is she just going to hang around and take Steelix's abuse. Distilling her rage and thoughts of revenge into a deep, dark cloud of negative energy, Drapion spreads her claws and releases it as a burning wave of purple-black evil. Steelix grunts and turns his head as the dark pulse slams into his body, the dark energy pitting even his shining armor. The very violence of the Drapion's sentemints sends a shiver through Steelix's body, but he shakes the dark pulse off the best he can. The scorpion won't have any chance to make good on her anger if he can finish her off quickly.

That in mind, he raises his tail high and brings it down on the arena, where it lands with a hollow whunk--and nothing further happens. Steelix looks down at the ground in perplexity, but it remains serene and untrouble beneath his gaze. Drapion lets out a delighted and slightly deranged cackle, blackness bubbling around her claws, while Steelix desperately tries to figure out what might have gone wrong. Perhaps he didn't hit the faultline right, or just didn't smack it hard enough? He isn't given long to figure it out, whatever the case; another dark pulse washes out across the arena and up against Steelix's body, and the steel type forces himself to move on.

This time, he aims very carefully and smacks the ground extra-hard, and almost sighs with relief when the ground around him starts to buck and quaver, casting Drapion to the floor with its erratic trembling. When the earthquake dies away, Drapion looks blurrily up at Steelix and manages a snarl of loathing. Though the scorpion scrambles to rise, her legs do not seem to want to bear her up, and she settles for firing her dark pulse from the floor. The dark attack's caustic touch gives Steelix momentary pause, but it is ultimately not enough to seriously deter him from sending another earthquake ripping through the arena. The powerful wave of seismic energy is too much for Drapion, and when the attack ends, she lies comatose on Athasan's side of the arena, very obviously unable to continue.
