[11] Skylark vs Hawke (ref: blazheirio889)

I'll have a sableye. Also, since it's been a long time since I last battled, I just want to confirm a few things. I can use learnsets from older generations right? Can a pokemon be both burned and asleep at the same time (or any other status combination)? Up to how many conditionals can I use without a penalty?

Yes, yes, and three.

Ok gastly, thank you for helping me out.

I want you to use hypnosis, that should make them use protect, then use disable (can use it in dream world right?) if they used protect; if for some weird reason their protect failed and they fell asleep use Dream Eater instead. If disable worked use Confuse Ray, if not use Sucker Punch, or Dream Eater if they're still asleep

Terrain: Tree of Dreams

Many of the TCoD League's trainers are taking a protracted vacation to Unova, traveling around the region and dropping into different cities to watch or battle in the ongoing league championship. There's one group that's been taking a vacation of a different sort, though--a select few who elected to venture into Unova's Dream World rather than take the normal route around the Unova region, with the promise of a battle at the end of their excursion and a place in the league championship if they should emerge victorious.

There are many paths through the Dream World, but they all end at the same location: the Tree of Dreams, an incredibly ancient plant whose boughs are draped with the dreams of pokémon from all around the world. It is thought that those who bring an offering to the tree's base may be able to change their dreams into reality, but there will be none of that today. No, today there will be only battling, the opportunity to change dreams of glory into reality for those who were unlucky enough to miss the earlier championship registration period.

The area around the base of the Tree of Dreams is a simple grassy field, offering nothing in particular to help or hinder any battler. However, since this is, after all, the Dream World, pokémon will have no trouble accomplishing astonishing feats like conjuring tidal waves from nowhere or dropping spectral rocks on their foe. There are no restrictions on the kinds of attacks that can be used here, save those imposed by the league.

The Dream World was the image of a nature-lover’s haven: the sun shone, birds chirped, groundlings foraged, grass rustled. The environment was pristine, yet strange in a wild, fascinating way. Instead of a solid expanse of land, the vista was broken into large chunks, firm blocks of earth levitating as if by magic. Bridging these islands were translucent rainbows, see-through but quite solid and certainly safe to walk on. These islands and bridges sprawled across the sky in a spiral pattern, emphasizing the largest isle in the middle. Easily five times as large as the others, half of it was taken up by an enormous tree. On the tree were all manners of mosses and flowers and vines – and most peculiar of all, at the ends of some of the vines and branches were baubles of some sort.

Despite the vastness of the Dream World, the trainers found the Tree of Dreams quite easily. Apparently what they say about all paths leading to the Tree was true. While the referee marveled at the odd baubles hanging from the tree, which were filled with shimmering mist (she seemed to be easily captivated by shiny), the trainers roamed the island and those surrounding it, looking for a Pokemon to aid them in their quest for glory. Skylark followed Hawke stealthily as she picked her Pokemon so he could send out a counter. Sneaky, sure, but it wasn’t frowned upon by the ASB officials (the referee was too distracted by shiny to notice anyway).

Hawke certainly took her time to decide, but at long last the trainers came back with their Pokemon. Hawke’s Gastly was chewing contentedly on a Pecha berry, while the trainer coaxed her closer to the battle arena with three other berries. Meanwhile, Skylark was followed by a rather greedy Sableye: she was carrying a pile of at least ten berries, staggering slightly with the load. The three Asberians waited for the Pokemon to finish their meals, then whispered to them. They nodded eagerly. Both Gastly and Sableye gave wide, toothy grins; free food in return for a battle? That sounded excellent.

Sableye tilted her head, studying her opponent intently with those unsettling, glittering eyes. Undaunted, Gastly cackled again and began to swing her tongue back and forth like a moist, pink pendulum. Recognizing the signs, Sableye quickly covered her eyes with her hands, while a shield of pure energy formed around her. The psychic signals Gastly was sending with her now-glowing eyes bounced futilely off the barrier. Realizing that she was wasting her time, Gastly pouted, while Sableye let the shield drop and snickered.

The Sableye species were a strange bunch: some dallied in battle, while others moved lightning-quick. This Sableye appeared to be one of the faster ones. Before Gastly could move, Sableye traced her fingers through the air, ghostly radiance dancing at her fingertips. Swaths of purple and black and blue danced towards Gastly, sparkling as they caught the light. Thoughts of battle swiftly escaped the gaseous Pokemon’s mind. She was giggling now, the sounds communicating childish joy rather than malice.

Gastly’s new trainer gave a frustrated shout. She ignored her. She could spare some time to play with these lights, right? Though she kept swatting at them with her tongue, the ghostly radiance kept dancing away. Gastly followed – and rammed right into the Tree of Dreams. She bounced off, dazed, then hissed angrily at the lights. They’d tricked her. She’d make them pay.

Meanwhile, Sableye was snickering at how easily Gastly was distracted. The gaseous blob’s back was turned: a perfect opportunity to strike. She ran silently towards her opponent, preparing to lash out with a claw to send her tumbling to the ground – and Gastly whipped around and flew straight at Sableye, faster than the eye could follow. Sableye gave a little yelp of shock and braked hard, hoping to avoid the attack, but to no avail: still moving bizarrely fast, Gastly swept by the purple gremlin, dealing her a harsh blow with a strong tongue.

Sableye very nearly lost her balance, but managed to stick out an arm to break her fall. Angry now, she spat a vicious insult at Gastly, whose expression changed from triumphant to livid. Sableye could barely hide a grin as Gastly charged at her. At the last moment, Sableye sidestepped the attack and stuck out a claw, causing Gastly to crash into it and stumble. The gem-eyed ghost followed up with another slash to her opponent’s vulnerable back. A sizzle was heard as dark energy ate at Gastly’s essence, and she shrieked in pain. Sableye would live to regret that blow.

Using swagger, Gastly will gain +2 in attack and become more confused. Also, foul play's damage will be calculated using Gastly's attack modification. Correct?

If yes to both,

Use swagger on the first action. Then, use foul play twice.

Once again, Sableye moved bizarrely fast, appearing in front of the naturally-faster Gastly in the blink of an eye. The gem-eyed gremlin grinned widely, then struck a pose. Gastly raised an eyebrow. Undaunted, Sableye put on her best superstar impression: nose in the air, exaggerated struts, her body language simply screaming “better than thou”. Gastly snorted and turned away, refusing to be angered by the arrogant display. Noticing this, Sableye frowned and turned it up a notch. I’m the most awesome ghost that ever lived, she crowed, chuckling a bit at the irony in the statement. No way a pitiful fart bubble could best me, nope! Gastly’s eyelids twitched crazily. I will not give in… I will not give in… The chant was repeated over and over again.

Thankfully, Sableye did not continue for long. Seeing that her opponent wasn’t hopping with rage, she decided to stop wasting her breath. Gastly let out a sigh of relief. Without Sableye’s infuriating monologues and lights dancing in her face (they were orbiting above her head instead), Gastly could concentrate on the attack at hand, and it required much focus indeed. With painstaking effort, the ghostly blob used her rudimentary psychic abilities to weave an odd bubble on the tip of her tongue. Inside the orb, psychic power influenced the flow of time, nudging it towards the opposite of its accustomed direction. The details for this peculiar spell were many; Gastly panted with the effort of keeping the extrasensory threads in place while weaving yet more. After a good minute or so, the miniature Trick Room was finally complete. Gastly lifted her tongue, and as if on cue, the bubble expanded rapidly, swallowing the entire island.

Sableye looked around wildly – she had never experienced a Trick Room before, and it was certainly unusual: leaves drifted up and attached themselves back on trees; the wind abruptly reversed direction; bird Pokemon in the sky flew backwards. The humanoid ghost decided she could get used to it, though. In fact, it seemed to be benefitting her more than her opponent. She felt nimble and quick. Cackling madly, she flashed a certain rude gesture at Gastly. Something inside her snapped, and she lunged forward with a roar. Unfortunately for her, Sableye demonstrated her newfound agility by sidestepping the attack easily and following up with several rapid, dark-charged blows that sent Gastly tumbling to the ground.

The harsh strikes caused Gastly to reel with pain, though it cleared her mind quite effectively. The ghostly lights of the Confuse Ray prodded her once more between the eyes before disappearing. Now entirely alert and seething with rage, Gastly prepared her own dark-type technique. The negative energy fed off the ghost’s bitterness, resulting in an attack that was considerably more powerful. With a snarl, Gastly savagely whipped Sableye with a black tongue. The gremlin buckled under the force. With more throaty growls Gastly continued to pound her opponent, until Sableye managed to roll to one side and scamper away. She grimaced as she felt bruises forming, but she was faring much better than her opponent, who was starting to flag.

Once again Sableye goaded Gastly into rushing at her. The ghostly blob clearly hadn’t learned from previous attacks, though, as Sableye again dodged with ease and pushed her opponent to the ground. While Gastly struggled to recover, Sableye dealt a powerful punch laced with dark-type energy. It burned horribly, and Gastly screamed in equal measures of pain and frustration.

Thoroughly fed up with her opponent’s trickery, Gastly decided to give her another bitter beating. Once again, her tongue turned black with vindictive, spiteful power, and she used the energy-charged appendage to strike Sableye with ferocious power. Unfortunately, there was no elemental weakness to exploit, nor was Gastly as familiar with the ways of dark-type energy, so the gaseous Pokemon’s attack was not nearly as effective as Sableye’s.

Before Gastly could close her eyes and enter a much-needed healing trance, Sableye gave a loud, mocking shout. Boohoo, poor widdle Gastly can’t take the heat? she jeered, dancing about infuriatingly. I was proud to be a ghost before. But to be grouped with your species – oh dear, that’s just so demeaning. Can’t fight for crap. Why, I bet the next breeze will blow your wispy body apart! Gastly was already quite angry, but Sableye’s words made her see red. She’d show the stupid gremlin. Calling her kind incompetent warriors! What blasphemy! Oh, she would kill that Sableye… if ghosts could be killed again. Hm.

Unfortunately, Gastly’s next move contradicted her bravado. She was no longer in any mood to Rest; no, she wanted to quarter her opponent. Sableye’s ever-present grin only made her more enraged. She was given no offensive commands, though, so the gaseous blob took matters into her own hands. With a frustrated scream Gastly lunged at her opponent, trying to hurt her with her rather limited physical arsenal. Sableye was whipped a few times with Gastly’s tongue, and her arm nicked by her two tiny canines, but the attack was poorly-coordinated and the results quite laughable. Sableye pushed Gastly away and giggled, giving the ghost’s rage yet more fuel.

Gastly gave one last, frustrated scream and reared back, preparing her tongue for a powerful strike. Sableye saw her chance. Quickly, she melted into the shadows just as Gastly’s tongue struck the ground and reappeared behind her adversary. Gastly was temporarily unbalanced by the weight of her tongue pitching forward, and Sableye took advantage of this by giving her a harsh shove. The gaseous ghost hit the ground, stunned; then, it felt like two hot spears plunged into her back. Sableye stabbed her dark-charged hands into Gastly’s body, relishing the sizzle of ghostly flesh.

When she recovered, Gastly charged again, this time favouring her teeth over her tongue. She managed to grasp Sableye’s arm, then shook herself savagely, hoping to rip the arm clean off. Her hopes were in vain. With another cackle, Sableye simply turned incorporeal, causing Gastly’s teeth to slide harmlessly through air. Absolutely furious, Gastly lashed at the empty air around Sableye’s gems, determined to get at least another blow in.

Sableye, apparently finding her opponent’s rage hilarious, never stopped cackling. She backed away a few steps and turned corporeal again, beckoning at Gastly to come closer. The bait was taken. Gastly rushed forward, and Sableye ducked, causing the other ghost to overshoot. While Gastly struggled to turn around in time, Sableye lashed out with dark-charged claws, slashing them both across Gastly’s solid core.

Gastly screamed, briefly immobilized by pain, and shivered as the dark energy coursed through her. She was feeling horribly battered, but even so she saw no point in obeying her new trainer. How would she win if she didn’t attack? Again she tried her best to beat Sableye into a dark purple pulp, but she managed to evade the bludgeoning tongue of doom for the most part.

Her anger spent, Gastly panted, now fully aware of the extent of her injuries. She cursed herself for giving into anger and acting rashly – clearly it had cost her. She was barely conscious, while Sableye was barely out of breath.

Sableye paused to observe her opponent, in case she had any game-changing tricks up her figurative sleeve. Indeed, Gastly seemed desperate. She appeared to be turning to evil, vengeful spirits for help, muttering an arcane spell to summon them and ask for their aid. As a fellow ghost, Sableye was somewhat familiar with the technique. In a few moments, she knew, Gastly would be surrounded by a dark aura of pure ruthlessness, and any fatal attack on her would backfire…

No, Sableye would have none of this. Victory was just a few inches from her grasp. Quickly, she thought up of some creative insults and spat them out, as if the words tasted foul. What’s a cloud of fart gas going to accomplish? Sableye hissed. You’re the most hopeless thing I’ve ever seen. Stop trying, roll over, and die already. As she spoke, she wiggled her claws mockingly, though they were dripping with caustic dark energy.

Sableye’s infuriating words, as well as the fear that came with the sight of Sableye’s claws, pushed Gastly into a fit of irrational anger once more. She wasn’t hopeless! To prove it, Gastly was determined to give Sableye a bruise to remember. Snarling, she lunged, thwacking away with her tongue. Sableye was struck a few times, but Gastly also struck the ground a few times, leaving her tongue sore and throbbing. Under normal circumstances it would be a minor nuisance, but damaged as she was, she felt like slipping into unconsciousness with each throb.

Seeing Gastly’s state, Sableye could not suppress a particularly wide grin. It was time to finish this. She beckoned at Gastly, who came charging forward without a second thought, eager to give Sableye more bruises to remember her by. Quick as a flash, Sableye stepped to the side and slashed Gastly one last time. With a grisly gurgle, Gastly succumbed to her injuries and drifted towards the ground.

Final notes
Gastly fainted on the second action.

Hawke gave a dramatic sigh before approaching her opponent to give him a handshake. The result was expected, but nonetheless still disheartening. Either way, she congratulated Skylark on the victory and wished him good luck in the next round. The brief end-of-battle chat ended, and they gathered around the referee to receive their prizes.

After the cash was distributed, Skylark patted Sableye on the head, praising her for a battle well-fought, then pushing her gently to where he found her. Sableye nodded, grinned, and vanished under a bush. Hawke turned to her own temporary fighter. There was an awkward pause. Everyone present had neglected to bring Revives, and there was no Pokemon centre nearby to nurse Gastly back to health… Quickly, the three Asberians hurried away before some official or other could accuse them of negligence and abuse.

The battle is over and Skylark is the winner. He gets $10 and entry to round four of the tournament.
Hawke gets $5.
I get $15 for reffing.
Good game, both of you. Better luck next time, Hawke, and good luck in the tournament, Skylark!

Good match, I guess. We need a rematch you and I. In a match where I don't give up before the match even starts?
