Negrek vs. Kratos Aurion

If I understand this correctly, since Räsvelg fainted before it was Mandarb's turn, she doesn't get to chill, right?
Correct; the round would have ended immediately upon Rasvelg's fainting.

Agh, forgot I hadn't done this. Hm. Might as well give Thunderforce (formerly Reshef... could've sworn I changed his name before this) a shot at it, then. Because hey, if I can actually pull this off then auto-luxray, right?

Terrain: The Ninja Village

At the heart of a dark, secluded forest, there lies a tiny village passed over by time. Here the way of the (stereotypical anime) ninja is still very much in practice, where young children learn to kill people using nothing but their toes and the village elders haven't been seen since they decided to hide in plain sight a couple of months ago. Life here is untroubled by the bustle of urbanization outside the forest, and those rare travelers who manage to find the place are treated with no more than chilly politeness.

For the moment, though, everyone in the village (so far as you can tell; one of the elders is still AWOL) is off at a seasonal ceremony even deeper in the forest, leaving the place entirely open to wanton destruction in the form of a pokémon battle. The village itself is made up of multiple tiers of construction, with many structures situated high in the boughs of the ancient trees that make up the place. Wooden platforms and tricky, concealed bridges provide means of getting from place to place around the village. The homes themselves are small and sparse, and all locked up tight with their occupants gone--and I wouldn't go trying to force your way in, either. These are *ninja* houses, after all; who knows what sort of booby traps they've laid to prevent prying trainers from breaking in while they're away?

The trees themselves are gigantic, their lower boughs easily large enough for a human to walk out along and their leafy canopy far away overhead. The air is deathly still, dusky, and largely silent; pokémon have learned to avoid this place. However, now and then a weird cry sounds in the distance, and strange, dancing blue lights sometimes float through the murk just beyond the village's perimeter.

The battle starts out on a small platform, about two meters square, that has random boxes and baskets (empty) piled around its edges. A couple of narrow bridges lead off to house-platforms to either side. Your battle can take you anywhere you want around the village, but you'd best be sure not to slip and fall!

Special Rules: Seeing as this is a ninja village, I challenge the opponent to a ninja battle. Sneaky-sneaky like. All this means is that, rather than having commands be posted in the thread, each battler will PM their orders to the referee. The only posts in the thread should be those made by the referee (except when a pokémon faints and another one is sent out; the player who's sending out can post who they'll use to save going through the referee), and each player has seven days from when the last round went up to submit commands by PM. At the beginning of the round, the referee posts squads as normal, then both players send in their pokémon choices by PM. Once both PM's are received, the referee posts the chosen pokémon in the thread and solicits the first round of secret commands.

After Kratos returned his fallen Pokemon to the safety of his Pokeball, he fell silent and his gaze found the charred platform under his feet. At first one would think that he was considering his next choice, but the hours stretched on, and after what felt like several days it was clear that his mind was elsewhere. The referee cleared her throat, snapping Kratos out of his reverie; hastily he spoke a few words of forced optimism before throwing his third and final Pokeball.

Out of the familiar flood of light came a medium-sized lion-like Pokemon: a Luxio. Thunderforce fluffed up his fur, making him look twice his size, and crouched low on the ground. Mandarb’s wary attitude was only strengthened when a furious hiss escaped from her new opponent’s throat.

Pushing away the misgivings that were starting to form at the edges of her mind, Mandarb mimicked Thunderforce’s crouch and drummed her front claws on the wooden platform, a bored expression on her face. An unconcerned air rolled off of her. “Little kitty,” she sighed, “why don’t you creep back to your trainer? Even if you could beat me, there are two other Pokemon after me. There’s no way you’ll win.”

Though the words would have been completely reasonable in a different situation, Mandarb had woven a dark spell through her remarks, and Thunderforce heard the words “you’re a pathetic Luxio who can’t accomplish anything” loud and clear. He snarled and charged electricity in his fur, causing it to fluff up even more; within moments, a wave of electricity was heading towards Mandarb. The Absol let out a snarl of her own as thousands of tiny spears seemed to sink their heads into her flesh.

Mandarb’s fur was left slightly darker after the Discharge, and her wounds from her scuffle with Räsvelg looked a bright crimson in contrast. Clearly the Absol was beginning to tire. Her next move would fix that. Mandarb stretched her jaws in a yawn (which served as a tinder to Thunderforce’s rage), then curled up on the platform, her nose buried between her paws. Soon, her breathing became deep and regular and a faint blue healing aura surrounded her. Wounds closed at an astounding rate, and frazzled nerves settled down.

Thunderforce nearly roared in frustration. First she hurls insults at me, and then she takes a nap? Nuh-uh. Not happening. The Luxio barely remembered to aim away from Mandarb’s armour in his anger and had to re-aim the Signal Beam hastily at her back. The blue and red beam struck Mandarb squarely on her flank, causing her to jerk violently, once, in discomfort.

Despite getting hit by a particularly nasty type of energy, Mandarb was tired enough to relax fully afterwards – healing trances were always hard on the spirit. Thunderforce, though, was not going to have any of this; with a howl he peeled his lips back in a snarl and began to build up electricity in his fur once more. This time, the electricity took form of a dense, precise bolt instead of a powerful wave. The Thunderbolt flew through the air and nailed Mandarb in her belly, causing her to gasp and twitch about as the electricity shot through her body, possibly frying a few nerves in the process.

Mandarb gave a quiet snort and buried her nose further in her paws. Seeing his opponent’s peaceful state, Thunderforce relaxed as well, confident that no random attacks would be flying in his direction in the near future. In this moment of respite, Thunderforce raised an energy barrier around him. The Light Screen flickered as if it could accomplish little more than simply existing, and indeed its creator’s paw passed through it with no resistance at all, but it was quite capable of cancelling elemental energies if the sudden absence of static in Thunderforce’s paw was anything to go by.

There was another snort, louder this time, and Thunderforce looked up to see Mandarb staggering towards a crate, her eyes still slightly bleary with sleep. Her scythe sizzling with dark energy, she slashed at the wooden structure, reducing it to strips of splintered wood in moments. Instead of dissipating, though, the dark energy crept over the wood, surrounding it; with a howled command from Mandarb, they assembled into the rough shape of a quadruped with a plank sticking out from the side of its head. The crude structure would be almost comical if it weren’t for its glowing red eyes and sinister black aura.

Thunderforce growled uneasily. Thunder Wave was now out of the question. Instead, he began to charge a dense ball of electricity, his fur lifting as he drew more and more electrons from sources unknown. A thin beam of electricity shot from the sphere, knocking out one of the planks that formed Mandarb’s Substitute’s hind leg. It buckled dangerously, then resolutely struggled to stand on three feet.

Much like Mandarb, Thunderforce’s fur was beginning to puff up from the excess left over from the Charge Beam.

Seemingly unconcerned about the damage done to her Substitute, Mandarb began to collect nasty thoughts in her mind, which wasn’t a difficult task due to her inherent malice. The thoughts began to take on a physical form: a writhing mass of dark tendrils gathered around the Absol’s feet. With a sharp bark the energy exploded outwards, leaping eagerly forward to engulf Thunderforce in its chilling depths, but unfortunately for them the translucent golden screen stopped a great deal of the attack. Only about half of the energy remained, but it was enough to make Thunderforce shiver uncomfortably.

Once the Luxio had recovered, he opened his jaws wide to reveal two tiny balls of energy: one red and one blue. Rapidly they grew larger. After a moment, two beams were fired from each sphere, and they wound together as they travelled through the air, producing a single beam that seemed purple. Before the Signal Beam reached Mandarb, however, her Substitute jumped in the way. Planks collapsed back onto the platform as the bug energy sapped whatever life force the structure had left.

While Thunderforce gave a yawn and settled on the platform, Mandarb siphoned a small amount of precious energy in the air around her. Carefully, she compressed it into a thin sheet of translucent gold which did not look unlike Thunderforce’s protective barrier. The Absol shivered slightly as she felt the wondrous screen slowly drain away what little energy she had to offer.

By the time Mandarb had finished fashioning her Light Screen, Thunderforce was still snoring away. Mandarb smirked; the slumbering Luxio was the easiest target she could ask for. She tilted her head back and started gargling. Whatever was being brought to her mouth sounded disgustingly thick and sludgy. After a few moments, Mandarb strutted towards Thunderforce and spat a noxious combination of acids and toxins on his thick black fur. The Luxio yowled indignantly and tried to rub the poison off onto the wooden planks, but to no avail, while Mandarb made a face at the terrible taste left on her tongue.

Thunderforce growled and gave up on rubbing his side on the platform. Instead, the lion Pokemon charged electricity in his fur, then released it in the form of a fairly powerful pulse. Unfortunately, Mandarb’s Light Screen toned the power down considerably, so she was only given a quick, unpleasant jolt. Meanwhile, Thunderforce’s own protective barrier flickered dangerously before fading away altogether.

Aiming to take advantage of this, Mandarb began to glow with a dark energy. All sorts of negative thoughts spilled from her mind to the aura surrounding her. After a moment, the aura suddenly exploded outwards, engulfing Thunderforce in a matter of seconds. He growled in pain as the potent attack seared at his fur, yet at the same time, the pure vindictiveness of it caused him to shiver with cold.

Once Thunderforce was released from the grip of the Dark Pulse, he began to spark with electrical power once more. This time, the resulting wave was much more powerful, but it still wasn’t enough to overcome Mandarb’s energy barrier. Like last time, the electricity dwindled sadly before striking the disaster Pokemon, though this time she flinched slightly in pain.

As soon as commands were whispered to each Pokemon, Mandarb unexpectedly began to sing. At first, her voice was so low and quiet that Thunderforce had to strain to hear her. Despite the Absol’s naturally haunting tone, it was a rather soothing song: slow and calm, almost like a lullaby. Thunderforce smiled a bit and lay down on the platform, only too grateful for the rest and the help Mandarb was providing to help him fall asleep.

As if offended by her sole audience member’s lack of attention, the song suddenly rose in volume and pitch. Thunderforce’s eyes snapped open in shock at once. The notes had started to slip out of place, turning once-melodious chords into a mishmash of dissonance. Using his paws, Thunderforce pinned his ears to his head, but the volume did not decrease. High, keening notes began to weave into the Perish Song, bestowing a magnificent headache to every listener. Clashing pitches and unbearably loud screeching assaulted the arena until Mandarb and Thunderforce thought their eardrums would burst. When the Perish Song finally drew to an abrupt close, both Pokemon were left with a ringing in their ears and a massive migraine.

Unbeknownst to the battlers, a dark mist began to gather in the deepest shadows of the forest: ghastly spirits attracted to the grisly song.

Thunderforce groaned and clutched at his head. The more he tried to shake off the headache, the stronger it grew. In the end, he managed to force himself into an unnatural sleep, but through it all the electric lion was still faintly aware of a pulsing pain. A faint blue aura surrounded Thunderforce. Miraculously, burns, bruises, and wounds healed in a matter of seconds, but at the cost of a fair amount of energy.

While Thunderforce sank into a deep healing trance, Mandarb tilted her head back to locate a large branch above her. She bunched her muscles and kicked off with considerable force, landing gracefully on a bough that was at least seven meters above the central platform. Below her, Thunderforce settled into a more comfortable position and slumbered on.

Its energy spent, the Light Screen around Mandarb flickered dangerously before fading away completely. The Absol wasn’t bothered, though, and lay down as comfortably as she could on her perch. The battle drew to a standstill as both Pokemon took a much-needed rest. Just before the referee waved her flags to draw the round to a close, Thunderforce sleepily blinked his eyes open.

Unproofread, and I'm terribly sorry for the wait.

It looks like Kratos has fallen off the face of the internet for the moment; IMO it'd be a shame to end the battle in a DQ now, so I'd like to extend the deadline on this for another couple of weeks to see if he is able to get back on in that time.

ETA: NEVER MIND guess he's on right now, derp.

Mandarb carefully rose to her feet while Thunderforce looked around the arena, confused by the disappearance of his opponent. A loud yowl soon gave away her location. Thunderforce’s head jerked up to see Mandarb looking down on him with a sneer on her face. She yelled several wounding insults at the Luxio; most of them consisted of how his poor, delicate body and poor, delicate ears weren’t suited to the feelings and sounds of battle (how was he to know that Mandarb was affected by the Perish Song like he was?). ”You’re screwed, anyway,” your trainer says. Be a good kitty and give up.

Agitated and nervous as he was, it didn’t take much to coax him into a fearful rage; with that statement, Thunderforce snarled and threw his head back, aiming as best as he could at the tiny target that was Mandarb’s head. Moments later, a blue and red beam burst forth from Thunderforce’s mouth. The targeted Absol laughed mockingly, but misjudged the distance when she attempted to duck out of the way. The Signal Beam struck her face and she growled as the pain interfered with her balance. Luckily for her, the branch was wide enough for her to reclaim her perch, albeit with a lot of ungraceful clambering.

Thunderforce turned his head to the side to avoid the drizzle of bark that was coming his way. When he looked up again, he could just see the edge of Mandarb’s blade peeking out from behind the branch. She did not seem to be moving. Waiting several moments did not change anything. The restless Luxio growled under his breath and charged electricity in his fur, despite knowing that the Thunderbolt could never hope to reach Mandarb. Indeed, the dense ball of electricity only covered half the necessary distance before falling down again, plummeting past the platform and possibly frying some unfortunate denizen of the forest ground.

At last, Mandarb stirred. She took note of Thunderforce’s position before lazily hopping off the branch. The distance between the bough and the platform below ensured that she achieved enough velocity to knock Thunderforce off his paws, giving him a nasty bruise in the process, despite his resistance to flying-type moves. As the Luxio lay on his side, winded, Mandarb stumbled a few steps to the side and regarded her opponent with exhausted eyes.

While Thunderforce staggered to his paws, the sense of foreboding that had manifested during Mandarb’s puzzling inactivity doubled. The Luxio’s fur stood on end, but this time it wasn’t from static – it was from fear. Shooting random projectiles at Mandarb would definitely ease his nervousness. Another Signal Beam took form in Thunderforce’s mouth. This time, it hit Mandarb’s chest, bouncing pathetically off her steel armour with a little ping. The Absol gave him a tired smirk.

Suddenly, space seemed to twist in on itself, and a bolt of pure psychic energy barreled into Thunderforce’s side. The powerful blast knocked him onto his side, knocking the breath out of him once again. Mandarb’s smirk grew wider; obviously, it was her doing. Thunderforce swore vengeance on the Absol, though he felt calmer now that the sense of dread had mostly cleared.

Thunderforce’s first Signal Beam rolled a very good number during the accuracy check, so it hit, though its damage was reduced by distance.

I’m really sorry for the wait and for the unproofread-ness of this reffing, especially when the battle’s almost over (has it really been a year since this battle started?).

Even as Thunderforce wound down from his terror-induced rage, Mandarb hurled another volley of insults at the electric lion. His fur began to stand up on end, charged with irritation and anger at Mandarb’s ridiculous boasts. I bet you won’t even last this round… Preposterous! Thunderforce crouched down and snarled, eager to prove that he would not be going down so easily. Electricity cracked in his fur; moments later, a sizeable wave of electricity shot from the Luxio’s body. Mandarb cringed as the attack took hold of her body, causing her muscles to spasm briefly.

Even though the attack was endured fairly easily, Mandarb could feel exhaustion closing in. She was, by no means, in good physical condition either. The Absol gave Thunderforce a final derisive snort before freezing in place, her body gradually dissolving into a vague, translucent red blob. Then, the blob condensed into a thin beam of light which leapt back into its Pokeball. Thunderforce, though surprised by Mandarb’s sudden retreat, charged more electricity, sensing that another opponent would soon show up.

Thunderforce was right. Negrek threw another Pokeball, this one containing a familiar half-dead monkey. As soon as Chimchar materialized, Thunderforce released the energy in his fur with a howl. Unprepared for the sudden attack, Chimchar squealed and was bowled over, completely at the mercy of the particularly potent attack. When the tide of electricity fizzled away, she did not get up.

Before Yoshiya could even raise his tired arms to tap out a rhythm, Thunderforce gave a throaty scream and took off at an unbelievable speed. The dumbstruck Cleffa saw the flash of bared fangs before Thunderforce’s jaws closed on him. He didn’t stop there, however, and proceeded to rocket off the edge of the platform, snarling and growling all the way. Yoshiya screamed as a terrible feeling of weightlessness enveloped him, and he desperately used his limited psychic powers to hold himself up, but it was an impossible task with Thunderforce’s weight dragging him down. Leaves and branches whipped at the pair’s bodies as they tumbled through the air. At last, a thicket of broad, crisscrossing branches caught the two falling Pokemon, the wood creaking in protest with the added weight. Feeling satisfied with himself, Thunderforce released the trembling Yoshiya, who quickly backed away, arms waving frantically.

It soon became apparent, however, that Yoshiya’s arm waving was rhythmical and disturbingly deliberate. It was only when the baby Pokemon’s eyes began to glow a flat orange and his body a bright blue-green that Thunderforce realized he was in deep trouble. By then, however, his nausea had increased ten-fold and he could barely breathe without feeling like he had to vomit. Helpless, the Luxio lay there as Yoshiya threw his head back, arms still tapping out a frenetic rhythm, and let out a deep, guttural roar, far too loud and hoarse for any baby Pokemon. If it weren’t for the canopy of leaves that blocked off the sky, the battlers would have been able to see several large dots in the atmosphere, glowing the same blue-green as Yoshiya was. The trainers, on the other hand, were still on the platform, and as both were experienced battlers they recognized the attack in an instant. Negrek gave a whoop of glee.

Rapidly the dots grew larger, eventually revealing themselves to be meteorites surrounded by draconic flames. They tore through the sky with an awful screech. Birds, bugs, and small woodland animals that were watching the battle from hidden places scattered in panic. The first meteorite hit the main platform dead on, easily obliterating it. Splinters and broken planks flew everywhere. The space boulder then went on to crash through several trunks, causing trees to topple over with mighty groans. The native wildlife shrieked in fear and outrage. Hidden ninja houses fell earthwards, spikes of wood and sharpened skewers flying out from doors and windows as traps were activated. Thunderforce cowered and covered his head with his paws, but that did little to drown out the terrible noise or to shield his face from whipping boughs. There was a mighty crash as the meteorite met the earth.

The second meteorite hurtled its way through the branches above Yoshiya and Thunderforce, eventually lodging itself in a wide fork between two thick branches of a tree a distance away from the main platform. The tree quickly caught fire, and the draconic flames leapt across the tree’s limbs, spreading far more swiftly than any normal fire. Within moments, several trees in the distance were burning merrily with an eerie blue-green glow, and the glow drew ever closer.

The third meteorite was the most accurate of them all; it seemed to have been dropped directly from above. The space stone relentlessly assaulted the tree Yoshiya and Thunderforce were in, crushing the trunk with earth-shattering power. With the main support beam gone, branches began to slip, and the two Pokemon tumbled to the earth once more, except this time there was little to catch them. Yoshiya, who was still waving his arms to and fro, hardly seemed to care, while Thunderforce screwed his eyes shut and let out a screech. His previous nausea came back with a vengeance. Sensing that the Luxio was at his weakest now, the dark mist that had patiently waited in the shadows sprang out of hiding. His body was enveloped in malevolent dusk that sucked every ounce of energy and life force out of his being. The process was so quick that Thunderforce scarcely had time to scream. By the time he hit the ground, the Luxio had fainted.

Yoshiya landed with far more grace than his opponent, having subconsciously used his levitation powers to slow his descent. As soon as he touched the ground, however, the temporary trance Metronome had placed him in faded away. Exhaustion caught up with the baby fairy and he toppled over on his side.

With the main platform utterly destroyed, the trainers had resorted to clinging onto branches instead. When all was quiet (save for the crackling of rapidly-approaching dragon flames, of course), they slowly clambered down to the forest ground. The climb was much more difficult than anticipated, however, as the Draco Meteor had damaged so many branches that it was tricky to find reliable footholds. In fact, the trainers probably fell half the distance in total.

When they finally reached the forest ground, the fainted Pokemon were recalled after a brief handshake. The trainers then stood in the ruined forest, discussing Negrek’s sheer luck (Draco Meteor after only one Metronome?) and questionable tactics (damn you Perish Song). Furious yells jolted them back to reality, however – it appeared that the ninjas had finally returned from their forest ritual. Both trainers agreed that this would be a good time to flee.

Terrain notes
Utter destruction and dragon flames. That is all.

Final notes
Metronome called Draco Meteor. I kid you not.
Because there was so much stuff between Thunderforce and the sky, Draco Meteor missed. Not that it really matters.

The battle is (finally) over and Negrek is the winner. She gets $24 for winning. Mandarb gets 3 EXP, Chimchar gets 1 EXP, and Yoshiya gets 2 EXP and two happiness points.
Kratos gets $9. Räsvelg gets 1 EXP, Richter gets 1 EXP and can now evolve, and Thunderforce gets 3 EXP.
I get $15 for reffing.
Great game you guys, I had fun reffing it, even though I was the Slowest Ref Ever™.

...you were supposed to hit the ground, Thunderforce. The ground. And dash yourself and Yoshiya into a million gory, glorious pieces. Why did this not happen. I am disappoint. >| You don't deserve the evolution you're getting after that sorry performance, sir.

Ah, well. Good game, jerk Negrek. I swear to god I am going to get you next time and it is going to be even more humiliating than being swept by a vespiquen. You have been warned.

Thanks for reffing, Blazhy. It was enjoyable, as usual.
