Arena: The Battle Dome

After the exotic twists and turns of the Battle Pike, its fickle resident pokémon and swampy terrain, the Battle Dome is extremely straightforward. The arena is small and no-nonsesne, dwarfed by the tiers of seats that rise high on all sides. They lead right up to the base of the stadium's retractable roof, now open to its widest to admit the tropical Hoenn sunlight. And today, those seats are mostly filled; after all, the stadium will play host to the semifinals matches of TCoD's League Championship--an event the spectators feel they've been anticipating for years. While Dome Ace Tucker riles the crowd out on stage, the four remaining trainers are huddled in the hallway below the stadium, waiting for their names to be called so they can make their entrance. They're only two wins away from the title now, but their opponents are some of the best in the league; those two wins will come dear, if they come at all.

The Battle Dome is a straightforward arena, but it offers everything a battler could want, including a sunken pool that will be filled with water to accommodate aquatic pokémon or large-scale water-type attacks. Powerful energy barriers separate the stands from the stage, inviting the fighters to go all-out without running the risk of injuring their adoring fans.

When battle threads are posted, each trainer will choose four pokémon from their active squad and PM them to the referee. This will serve as their active squad for the purpose of the battle. The referee will post the reduced squads, and the player to choose first will select all three of their pokémon for the match, including their order, at that point. The next player will then choose their three as well as give commands. From there, the battle will proceed as normal. Note that this is a doubles match, and the third pokémon will be brought in to replace the first to fall on a player's team.

Grass King

Ectoplasm the Male Haunter
Tadpole the Female Poliwhirl

Sin: Wrath the Male Larvitar

Greaser Lala

Fafneer the Male Houndoom
Charmeleon the Male Charmeleon
Torkoal the Female Torkoal
Kabuto the Male Kabuto

And here's our battle order:

1. Greaser Lala picks three and sends out two
2. Grass King picks three, sends out two, and attacks
3. Greaser Lala attacks

Sending out Tadpole, Aktzin, and saving Wrath for later.

Okay Tadpole, start off with a Scald, then Brick Break, and finish off with Waterfall. All aimed at Fafneer. If he uses Thunder Fang on you though, then Counter.

Tadpole: Scald@ Fafneer/Counter @ Fafneer ~ Brick Break@ Fafneer/Counter @ Fafneer ~ Waterfall@ Fafneer/Counter @ Fafneer

Aktzin, I'm gonna send you out into the pool. Your target is going to be Kabuto. Start off with a Thunderbolt, then set up an Aqua Ring. Finish off with another Thunderbolt.

Aktzin: Thunderbolt@ Kabuto ~ Aqua Ring @ Self ~ Thunderbolt @ Kabuto

Alright Kabuto, start with Dig and make your way to Tadpole. Then strike from out of your hole at her back and cling with all of your might to her head blocking out her vision and leaving her vulnerable to the damage from Thunderbolt. Do NOT let go. If it isn't too much strain on you to attack while clinging to her, use Giga Drain.

Dig~Dig Strike@ Tadpole~Cling/Giga Drain@ Tadpole

Fafneer, begin with a Roar on Tadpole. Then quickly make your way to Aktzin and use Snatch. Maneuver yourself behind and away from Tadpole and use Sunny Day.

Roar@ Tadpole~Snatch@ Aktzin~Sunny Day

The roaring of the crowd reverberates around the Battle Dome as Tucker riles the crowd, cavorting around the arena and exhorting his fans over the PA system. Greaser Lala and Grass King are waiting in the wings, where the noise of the arena is just an indistinct rushing underscored by the booming of the mic. At least, that's where Grass King assumes Greaser Lala is, across the arena from him. He stands awkwardly by himself, fidgeting and not sure what they should be doing. There's a tech with a clipboard and a headset waiting to shoo him out into the spotlight when the time comes, she's content to leave him to their own devices while she flips through the documents on her clipboard.

It's almost awkward enough that he tries striking up a conversation, despite the incredible noise, but he's only just opened his mouth when the tech snaps to attention, called on by some obscure signal squeaking from her headphones, and points at him. "You. You're up. Get out there!" At that point he doesn't have much choice but to turn aside and walk out into the brightness of the arena, squinting against the glare of the lights and overwhelmed by the cheers that rise up to greet his appearance. He manages to make his way out to his challenger's box, though, and gets his bearings while Tucker yells out an introduction. A couple minutes later, Greaser Lala emerges from the entrance at the opposite end of the arena and takes up her spot in the far challenger's box. There is some further introduction from Tucker, and then at last the referee raises her flags and signals the start of the match.

Greaser Lala is called on to release her pokémon first, and her pokéballs crack open to reveal Fafneer the houndoom and a Kabuto to accompany him. The little fossil pokémon looks uncomfortable in front of the crowd, tapping his claws on the ground in a nervous rhythm. By contrast, his teammate is dangerously cool. The screams of the audience bring back unpleasant memories, but he's a survivor and not at all worried about what's to come--not even when Grass King casts two water-type pokémon onto the field. Tadpole is doing his very best to look fierce below his jagged rock crown, and while he isn't doing a great job of it, Fafneer's lips curl back in a snarl nonetheless. Ridiculous-looking or not, water pokémon are not to be underestimated. Aktzin, bobbing in the pool at the arena's center, swings his antennae idly. The gravity of the match doesn't appear to be affecting him at all. If anything, he looks bored. Nevertheless, he is alert, and quick to respond as his trainer starts shouting out commands.

It's Fafneer who's the first to move. The houndoom opens his jaws wide and lets out a mighty roar, a deep, commanding sound that would have a subordinate member of the pack cowering and groveling in moments. It wipes the goofy serious expression Tadpole was trying out right off the poliwhirl's face, and the scald he'd been preparing goes cold and stagnant behind his lips. When he does release the attack, it's with rather more timidity than normal, and it lacks real force. Nevertheless, the hateful water still does a fair amount of damage to Fafneer, though he lets none of his discomfort show.

Fafneer's teammate is scrabbling at the ground, tearing up hunks of the arena's clay floor in hopes of digging his way to safety. Unfortunately, he isn't fast enough to outrun the gathering of charge between Aktzin's antennae, and the chinchou is able to nail him with a thunderbolt before he can disappear. The kabuto stops digging for a moment as the attack blasts into him, overwhelmed with pain and unable to move, but then starts working again at an even more frantic pace, until he's got a worthy tunnel going and is, at last, out of Aktzin's range for sure.

Fafneer turns a cold eye on Aktzin as the chinchou fries his teammate, and continues watching, muscles tensed, as Aktzin considers his next action. The houndoom's concentration isn't even broken by Tadpole waddling up and dealing him three nasty punches. When the briefest flash of blue light announces that Aktzin has started his attack, Fafneer is ready. A lightning-fast whip of dark energy sweeps out from his body and wraps around the chinchou, ripping the cloak of water he'd been constructing away and carrying it back to the houndoom. Ordinarily Fafnir wouldn't appreciate being wrapped in a constant sheet of water, but the aqua ring is no ordinary water. It leaves no more than a faint tingling sensation as it sweeps over Fafneer's body, washing away small cuts and bruises as it goes. In fact, it's positively soothing.

The ground near Tadpole trembles, and a moment later, Kabuto pops up and rams into the poliwhirl's side, sending him stumbling. Before he's able to recover, the rock type swarms up onto his head, knocking his crown down half over his eyes, and sinks in his claws, prepared to cling tight.

Tadpole burbles in distress, staggering around as the unfamiliar weight of Kabuto interferes with his balance, and tries to see out from under the rim of his crown. Kabuto isn't letting go; all Tadpole's squirming does nothing to dislodge him--it just prompts the rock type to sink his claws deeper, drilling pinpricks of pain into Tadopole's skull.

The poliwhirl gives up on removing Kabuto for the moment and instead tries to unleash a waterfall on Fafneer. The houndoom is standing with his head tipped back, blowing a thin stream of fiery energy into the sky, and doesn't seem to be paying attention. Tadpole narrows his eyes and secretes water from his skin, so engrossed in preparing his attack that he doesn't notice the sudden spike in the temperature of the arena. He makes an awkward run at Fafneer and throws himself into the houndoom. The larger pokémon grunts and staggers sideways, but barely feels the waterfall--it's easily eclipsed by the damage he's already taken.

As Tadpole wanders unsteadily away again, Aktzin is taking careful aim. It's going to be hard to hit Kabuto without striking his teammate as well, but the chinchou is prepared to try. Electricity fizzes around his antennae for a moment before he fires off a powerful thunderbolt. It strikes Kabuto, all right--but, as electricity is wont to do, then goes racing towards the ground. In doing so it passes straight through Tadpole, who gets to share his opponent's misery, nearly toppling over sideways as he trembles in the grip of the electricity. At the end of the first round, most of the pokémon are already looking ragged. Only Aktzin remains untouched, happy in his tranquil little pool.

Kabuto, hang in there! Mega Drain as much as you can. If he finds a way to peel you off, take cover back inside of your tunnel and use Metal Sound!

Okay Tadpole, start off by using Encore on Fafneer, after hes used Role PLay. Then use Brick Break on Kabuto, and use it to knock him off if you can. Finish off with an Earthquake if you got Kabuto off you, otherwise Brick Break him again.

Aktzin, use a Confuse Ray on Kabuto to start with. Then if Tadpole got him off, use Thunderbolt before he can get back in his hole. Otherwise Thunder Wave Fafneer. To end, Thunder Wave Fafneer if you haven't done so, but if you have, then send a Confuse Ray at him instead.

Fafneer watches Tadpole closely, lips drawing back from his teeth in a grimace of disdain. So this is the pokémon he's supposed to be emulating, is it? He's a bit pathetic for Fafneer's tastes. Nevertheless, the houndoom has to admit that the poliwhirl's natural affinity for water could come in handy. It isn't long before Tadpole notices the houndoom's rapt attention. It's all he can do not to jump in shock upon finding the houndoom's dark eyes fixed on him, but he manages to keep enough of his composure to counter with a round of applause. He is rewarded by having his own shock mirrored on the houndoom's face for a moment, before it sinks back to one of sullen anger. Fafneer had just finished analyzing the slick stickiness of Tadpole's skin, the porous texure that allows it to soak up water like a sponge, and now the poliwhirl is going to mock his careful analysis? Well, Fafneer is going to have his eye on Tadpole for a good long while--as long as it takes to get into this irritating water-type's skin completely.

Meanwhile, Aktzin is trying to draw a bead on his target. Ghostly lights dance around the bulbs of the chinchou's antennae as he waits for one of Tadpole's flails to bring the kabuto around to face the pool. Even then he can't see Kabuto's glowing eyes under his armor, but he fires off his confuse ray in good faith anyway. The illusion drifts across to Kabuto, filling his vision with blinking lights and sickening splashes of color. Kabuto tightens his grip on Tadpole's head still more, presses his face as close to the poliwhirl's clammy body as he can, and tries to ignore them as he extracts more of Tadpole's lifeforce.

The wave of pain and weariness that washes over Tadpole is enough to take the poliwhirl's mind off Fafneer and put it back on his unwelcome passenger. He flails around with his fists, trying to connect with Kabuto. It's difficult with his stubby arms, and he's striking at something he can't see, but a few punches do connect. Unfortunately, they only cause Kabuto to hiss and clamp down harder, with the effect that Tadpole redoubles his effort. The poliwhirl staggers around in a rough circle, fists a blur, while Kabuto clings on grimly and helps himself to another serving of Tadpole's lifeforce.

It doesn't look as though Tadpole's having much luck getting rid of Kabuto, so Aktzin focuses instead on Fafneer. The houndoom is stalking after the poliwhirl, a rapt look on his face as he absorbs every detail he can about the poliwhirl's behavior. Engrossed as he is, he never sees the thunder wave coming; and when the swift jolt of electricity does bring him back to attention, swinging around to look at Aktzin only ends with him staring right at the phantom lights swarming around the chinchou's antennae. With his paralysis-stiffened muscles, the houndoom can't tear his gaze away fast enough, and soon all he can see is the firefly-swarm of illusory lights. Fafneer lets out a howl of frustration and shakes his head, trying to clear the confuse ray from his mind. His coordination, already impaired by paralysis, betrays him as he tries a half-step forward. His leg stiffens and jerks, and he collapses on his side, pawing uselessly at the ground in between shaking fits.

At last, a lucky punch manages to dislodge Kabuto, and the fossil pokémon goes tumbling across the floor, coming to rest on his back with his claws pedaling madly at the air. In his panic, his confusion is able to take an even stronger hold, and all his attempts to rise are thwarted as he rocks miserably back and forth, doing no more than smacking the odd leg against the arena floor as he tries to right himself.

Okay Tadpole start off with an Earthquake, then Brick Break on Kabuto and then go into the pool and regain some health via Water Absorb. On the second action if you can't get to Kabuto for some reason, then use Substitute.

Tadpole: Earthquake ~ Brick Break @ Kabuto / Substiute (10%) ~ Get into pool and Water Absorb

Aktzin start off with Rain Dance to get rid of the sun. Afterwards use Thunder on Kabuto and then Fafneer if you can get to them, and Agility if you can't. Use Rain Dance again if the rain goes away for some reason.

Aktzin: Rain Dance ~ Thunder @ Kabuto / Agility / Rain Dance ~ Thunder @ Fafneer / Agility / Rain Dance

o___o Uh ohs...Well with the severity of Earthquake, confusion will fade more rapidly sooo...

Kabuto, use Hail after Aktzin uses Rain Dance and then Blizzard. Your enemies will be frozen. If you are too confused to carry out a move, postpone it till the next action to do so. If all goes smoothly, make your third action another Blizzard to keep them trapped.

Tadpole surveys his fallen opponents with grim satisfaction. Now that they're down, he's going to make sure they stay down. The poliwhirl gathers himself, then makes a great leap into the air, coming down with all the force he can muster. Nothing happens for long seconds, but just when Kabuto has managed to right himself and fuzzily decided that he has nothing more to worry about, fierce shockwaves ripple across the arena, rattling Kabuto's bones and bouncing Fafneer painfully against the ground. Cracks open in the arena floor as the earthquake rips through, small for now but sure to widen if the ground takes more punishment.

While chaos engulfs most of the arena, the pool is mostly undisturbed. Aktzin is buffeted by small waves as water sloshes from the pool, but he takes no significant damage. Better yet, the earthquake keeps his opponents occupied, so he can get his groove on uninterrupted. The chinchou swirls through the agitated water, his antennae swaying and his fins working madly against the erratic currents that currently grip the pool. Around and around he goes, tracing out a complex pattern in the water that holds immense power over the weather. Fafneer and Kabuto don't notice the sky darkening at first; they're much more concerned by the earthquake. But as the tremors start to die away, and the first raindrops fall, Fafneer rolls his eyes skyward and groans. In no time at all, a soaking downpour is soaking the fire-type and his partner, leaving one miserable and the other one feeling, if anything, better.

The earthquake wasn't any fun to ride out, but at least Kabuto's feeling much more clear-headed now. He takes a few moments to enjoy the patter of raindrops on his shell, then reluctantly goes about changing the weather to something he knows is going to sting. The kabuto extends his front claws, a blue ball of energy growing between them, and hurls the hailseed skyward. It travels up and up, impossibly far, until it is lost in the clouds. Once there, it alters atmospheric conditions once again, and within moments the clouds are showering down hail instead of raindrops.

Fafneer winces as hailstones bounce off his damp fur. He should be attacking now, he knows that, but he just can't seem to focus. The irritating phantom lights swirl and dance across his vision, taunting him, and the houndoom snaps at them in irritation. One thing is for sure--he can't stand just lying here. He's going to face his opponents with all four paws beneath him, even if it kills him--which it just might, as all Fafneer's attempts to rise end with him crashing back to the ground, thwarted by his temporary lack of coordination. At last he comes to his senses and lies back again, reluctantly deciding to just stop trying, but he's managed to give himself more than a few bruises nonetheless.

Tadpole grumbles to himself as he sees his partner's plans thwarted and the soothing rain changed to biting hail. That Kabuto--always interfering! Tadpole's hand clenches into a fist, and the irate poliwhirl lunges forward, slamming another brick break into the smaller pokémon. Kabuto is sent skidding back, but the fossil is by now feeling quite clear-headed and digs in his claws rather than falling into disarray. He keeps his attention fixes on Aktzin, who is repeating his sloshing path around the pool to conjure up more rain. No sooner has the hail trailed off and a light shower started than Kabuto has crafted another hailseed and sent it skyward, cutting the rain off before it has any real chance to get started and bringing on another hailstorm.

This time, Fafneer keeps his head and stays where he is. That's not going to prevent him from expressing his opinion on the way the battle's going, though--and loudly, at that. The houndoom raises his head off the ground and points his snout skyward, letting out the most forlorn howl he can muster. The yowling goes on and on, and Tadpole slaps his hands over his earholes and glares at the loud, unrepentant houndoom. Turning on his heel, the poliwhirl leaps into the pool to join his partner. His pores open, soaking up some of the pool's abundant water and leaving him feeling refreshed.

Aktzin isn't terribly grateful for his partner's company in the pool, though. He needs to weave yet another rain dance, and now he has to do it while also working around the poliwhirl. While Tadpole is splashing about enjoying himself, Aktzin has actual work to do. Tadpole is oblivious to the chinchou's irritation and simply congratulates his partner when the hail, once again, is replaced by rain. Thankfully, it seems that this time the rain will be sticking around for a bit. Kabuto shows no sign of summoning more hail, although the air around him steams with condensation as it grows ever more chill. As it turns out, Kabuto is still going to be bringing on the ice--it's just that this time it won't be coming from the sky.

Raindrops flash-freeze as a howling winter wind races across the arena, carrying snow and ice with it as it goes. Aktzin and Tadpole are both subject to its icy fury, too startled to duck beneath the water's surface, where they would be safe. As the blizzard dies down, though, this proves to have been all to the best. A thin crust of ice has formed on the top of the pool, and so now, while Aktzin and Tadpole find themselves temporarily frozen into it, it's better, for the air-breathing poliwhirl at least, that they weren't trapped below it instead.

Though that, at least, would have spared their ears further agony courtesy of Fafneer. The houndoom is still caterwauling away, his yips and howls continuing in a blaring, unbroken stream. The old dog actually seems to be enjoying himself; there's something deeply satisfied by howling out all his frustration and damaging his opponents at the same time.
