Arena: Santalune City

Like an emerald in the rough, this town in the center-south of Kalos glows verdant with lush grass and forest green roofs mottled with rustic pavement and ancient stone walls. The battle begins in the circular fountain plaza at the very center of the city, from which most else can be seen, including the majestic Trainer's School right across, the great Bug-Type Gym in the distance, and the tables of several small cafés and restaurants in the fountain area, although most seem dwarfed by comparison to the notable establishment atop a hill nearby.

For this round of the tournament, each trainer's Pokémon will be wearing a specified hat from the Santalune Boutique. Each hat grants its wearer the ability to use certain moves (usually three), and often adds an Ability to the wearer's current Abilities as well. After five rounds, the currently worn hats will be replaced by another set of two hats, again chosen at random. The hats' descriptions and effects are as follows:
  • Bamboo Sprig Hat: A round cap that closely resembles Pangoro, bringing about an aloof sense of menace for the hat seeker that's not to be messed with. Grants the moves Sky Uppercut, Crunch, and Parting Shot, along with the Scrappy ability.
  • Boater: A nifty straw hat that keeps the head cool in sunshine and protected in the storm, perfect for weathering a long voyage. Grants the moves Rain Dance, Hurricane, and Tailwind, along with the Swift Swim ability.
  • Camo Cap: A beanie that blends right into the wilderness with its military-grade motif, complete with grenades and reinforcements, enabling its wearer to move in and out of cover -- or maybe their opponent just doesn't want to be seen with someone who actually wears camo. Grants the moves Egg Bomb, Night Slash, and Attack Order, along with the Sniper ability.
  • Exotic Cap: A repurposed casquette with bold patterns, for those who aim to make an unusual fashion statement and also don't mind looking like they have a toadstool for a head. Grants the moves Hex, Venom Drench, and Infestation, along with the ability Effect Spore.
  • Fedora: A distinctive kind of hat that has been through many associations in pop culture, and we're pretending for our own sake that the most recent one is Indiana Jones. Grants the moves Rock Slide, Bulldoze, and Power Whip, along with the ability Sand Rush.
  • Felt Hat: A porkpie hat famously worn by a trainer that Professor Sycamore placed all of his faith in. Grants the moves Spiky Shield, Mystical Fire, and Water Shuriken.
  • Knit Cap: A woolly, tight-fitting beanie with which one can not only keep warm, but thrive in the cold. Grants the moves Blaze Kick, Frost Breath, and Hail, along with the ability Ice Body.
  • Logo Cap: A snapback with a readily recognizable sigil that's associated with the Kalos Pokémon League. Grants the moves Gyro Ball, Dragon Tail, Flame Charge, and Clamp.
  • Sports Cap: A polyester cap for athletic types who want to sprint and make sparks fly when the sun is out. Grants the moves Quick Attack, Acrobatics, and Electro Ball, along with the ability Unburden.

Let's make this an Electric battle. Eldrach, let's do this.

Support moves first, I say. Start with Flash, because that could be very useful for us later. Use it once more on the second action, whether or not it worked originally, but if there's a Substitute up on the opposing side I want you to use Energy Ball instead, and no matter what other circumstances, Camouflage if you're a Water-type. For the third action, let's Struggle Bug if there isn't a Substitute up, Energy Ball if there is, and Camouflage if you are a Water-type. (except, on any action you're ordered to use Camouflage, if you think Camouflage would make you Water-type for some silly reason, then just cry in a corner for a couple minutes and choose the most relevant of your other commands for that action)

Flash ~ Flash / Energy Ball / Camouflage ~ Struggle Bug / Energy Ball / Camouflage

Hmm. Let's take advantage of your volt absorb and use Ion Deluge so you can soak up those Flashes. Next, go with Confuse Ray, and finish with Soak.

BATTLE START!

The first lots have already been cast, the fates have passed their judgment. Lumiose first bore witness to this organized skirmish, the meeting of trainers in which, despite valiant fighting, only one can emerge victorious. Two such victors have proceeded to the next town now, joined by an official to sanction their confrontation. Some fight for glory, others for power. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget.

ROUND 1 START!

The trainers on both sides of the fountain release their chosen pokemon (ultraviolet's lanturn finding the fountain itself rather pleasant), both of them quite literally buzzing with Electric energy. Xiaoyu is the first to manifest it, launching a flurry of sparks at her foe that seem to sink into the spider's fur, causing him to shiver slightly with worry as he finds his elemental balance disturbed. Despite this, Eldrach thinks blinding the offender is worth a try, rearing up and letting his pedipalps flash harshly. Xia is of course unfazed, having had her own potential light show literally since she was hatched. The Electric touch on the move is nice though, lifting her spirits just a bit.

Frustrated, Eldratch tries again, doing his best to pull off the most violent glare of his life, drawing looks and expletives from several onlookers- and still his counterpart stands unfazed, for a moment even chuckling at his misfortune. Xia decides it's time to demonstrate what a real light show looks like; the orbs extending from her head flashing in rapid sequence, one which leaves Eldrach with quite a hefty headache and those casually watching the battle wondering when these trainers are actually going to have their pokemon attack each other.

The dizzy galvantula is eager to do just that, preparing himself for a little shake/rattle/roll- and he does, his fuzzy form rattling about and causing someone to faint, maybe. Conspicuously absent is the Bug energy he realizes too late he's meant to be spewing out. Disappointed and embarrassed, he relaxes again, grumpily awaiting the next round and a clearer head. Xia meanwhile has judged the water she is in to be of such quality that it must be shared- and share, she does hurling a large mass of the fountain's contents at the dejected arachnid, further upsetting his type balance.

alrighty.

Let's start with Thunder Wave now that he's not an electric-type, but if Eldrach becomes unhittable for some reason, switch to Aqua Ring.

If you didn't manage to Thunder Wave him last action, try it again in your second action; if he's already paralysed, hit him with Discharge; if he's unhittable again for some reason, go with Rain Dance.

On your last action if he's not paralysed, use Thunder Wave; if he is, Discharge, and if he's unhittable, use Stockpile (10%).

Thunder Wave/Aqua Ring ~ Thunder Wave/Discharge/Rain Dance ~ Thunder Wave/Discharge/Stockpile

Drat. Well, even if it doesn't make flavor sense for Ion Deluge to affect Flash, it does make flavor sense for Flash to not affect Lanturn, so I'll just go with it.

Substitute, Eldarach, as quick as possible - you're faster than it, so you can avoid the Thunder Waves. We don't need much - 10% should do the trick - and let your dizziness serve as inspiration for your art rather than as a hinderance. I have faith in you! Following that, if you are paralyzed then Camouflage straight away; otherwise, Toxic. And on Action 3, let's start actually doing some damage with Energy Ball, or Toxic if Lanturn isn't poisoned already.

ROUND 2 START!

Suffering from a slight migraine and a disappointing first showing, Eldrach realizes there is significant pressure on him. Hoping to momentarily distract the crowd from his shortcomings, he gathers some loose plant matter from a nearby bush and forms it into a convincing miniature of himself, depositing it before him and hoping it can cover for him while he tries to think of a way to recover face. The opposing lanturn, noticing this act of avoidance, drops her plans to stun her foe, deciding to focus on herself instead while he prepares. Again she concentrates on manipulating the water around her, building it up into a rather impressive wall that somehow provides her with even more hydrous vitality than before. Not that it matters much right now since she has yet to even be touched, but safe is safe.

At that moment, Eldrach has a breakthrough in his clouded mind- a true master plan! Remembering the fact that he is a huge spider, he works up a decent quantity of harsh venom- normally to be administered through a well-placed bite, but there's no way he's getting in that treacherous water. Instead, he craftily redirects it to his mouth, and spews it forth, the viscous liquid heading towards the fountain with an impressive arc that earns some scattered applause/retching. Managing to penetrate the sheet of water, it hits its target, leading Xiayou to twitch and flail as the bitter mess enters her blood and clouds her vision. Cursing the galvantula, she quickly swims over to a less disgusting area. Hoping to resolve the water pollution that Eldrach has just caused, and also make him feel just as miserable, she begins twirling and twisting beneath the surface, soon bringing dark clouds to Santalune's center, which promptly begin their downpour, much to the disdain of those in assembly who are not prepared for a spring shower. Eldrach, though not feeling any ill effects, is likewise offended by the development, his carefully groomed hairs soaked within moments. At least his distraction is still standing.

With this in mind, and spurned by the reaction his earlier maneuver got, the arachnid decides he's finally ready for a real attack. Once again drawing inspiration from the shrubbery around him, he spawns a crowd-pleasing sphere of potency, and brings it up towards his face, carefully, so as not to drop it on himself or do something just as silly- and then does just that, feeling the directed energy splashing against his shell rather irritatingly. It seems his efforts to regain his prestige have faltered once more. Xia remains oblivious to this, more concerned with planning for the future, her gills opening wide as the water around her glows brightly (much like her opponent's failed attack, one might note) and seems to seep into her, the glow transferring to her body. Bolstered is certainly an adjective she would use to describe herself at this point.

Still not sure what type Camouflage will turn you, but for the time being anything is probably better than Water. ROUND 3 START!

Realizing that perhaps what he needs is a certain... change in identity, so to speak, Eldrach starts the round off by vanishing from sight for a moment (to the audible shock of those watching) as he takes in the nature of his environment. When he reappears in the same position his body is no longer the poignant yellow it was before, now instead a milder greyish tan. Though his original hue returns eventually, Eldrach notices himself feeling more... Normal, in spite of the detectable traces of other elements. No one ever said regaining face was easy. Xiaoyu is much less interested in all of this, instead focusing on the spider's wretched puppet. Taking advantage of the rains she had summoned, the lanturn brings Santalune a tempest, calling down a bolt of electricity which blows the hapless substitute into gravel as it comes down.

Eldrach, finally satisfied with his look, decides to avenge this casualty by going for Xia's energy, strained enough as it is from summoning such forces. A faint minty aura shifts from him to the fountain, enveloping the alarmed fish and sapping her strength. Undeterred, she brings another glint of lightning from the sky, this time striking the culprit himself, the attack taking him by surprise- it's not that often that he gets hurt by sparks, after all.

Determined to put an end to this injustice (and perhaps eager to finally engage his held metronome) the galvantula repeats his strategy, building up a elemental glow to cut at Xia's lightning summoning abilities with (and bringing some much needed power back to himself in the process). Still the stubborn lanturn smites him with her menacing bolts again, leaving him drawn into himself with his legs over his eyes as he awaits the end of the merciless downpour.

Okay, well that probably stings a little. Let's start with Attract and try and use that to our advantage - if Eldrach is un-attractable for some reason, you can spend that action chilling. If Eldrach tries to talk to you first, that's fine, just use Ion Deluge. I'm not sure how that's going to work? But a free 1% energy doesn't hurt.

Next action, if you successfully attracted Eldrach, use Captivate to lure him even further with your feminine wiles. This should do pretty nicely, you're in a fountain and it's raining and Aqua Ring is going, hopefully he'll fall pretty hard. If he hasn't been attracted already, try again - if you can't again for some reason, Chill. You deserve it, girl!

Last action, if Eldrach still isn't attracted - try again, and Chill if he's un-attractable. If he is attracted, use Chill anyway, just try and look super hot when you do it. Like a supermodel or a pop star in the rain!

Attract/Chill/Ion Deluge ~ Attract/Captivate/Chill ~ Attract/Chill

I don't like where that's going, but it's clear your opponent is grasping at straws now, Eldrach. We've got 'em on the ropes, and now it's time to finish 'em off! Just keep using Giga Drain, and remember - sucking out her energy with Giga Drain is keeping her to yourself, y'know? It's giving you the best, most long-lasting memento of her - her very soul!

------------------------------

Not one for exciting new plans, it seems, Eldrach keeps up his tried and true strategy of leeching his opponent's life force away. His front legs quiver and then glow slightly green as he concentrates, and Xiaoyu cringes to herself as throbbing green tendrils of energy begin to peel off her sleek blue skin positively glowing with youth that she's worked so hard to maintain. She swears she can see the blue dulling before her eyes as Eldrach taps his front legs together in satisfaction, drawing the green energy into himself with vile gulping sounds. Completely unacceptable. The Lanturn dips down into the fountain for a moment and comes back up with beads of water streaming down her newly-moisturized skin, head lights gleaming with fresh light as if they've been reinvigorated by their short plunge into the water. Xiaoyu puts all the energy she can into lighting up the front orb, dazzling white light spilling from it to lure Eldrach in. Unconsciously drawn forward by reminders of the electrical energies he's given up, the Galvantula finds his legs moving all on their own, closer, closer...

Up close, Eldrach can't even remember to be afraid. All six of his eyes are fixated on the orb of light swaying back and forth, back and forth, like a pendulum. From this distance he can see the fizzing of the colony of bacteria living in Xiaoyu's head light, generating power to keep it alit. His eyes grow wide as he stares, all thoughts leaving his mind but that light, and Xiaoyu encourages him further by sending a few quick pulses of electricity into it, setting is even more brightly aglow as the tiny organisms within swirl in captivating patterns.

Exhausted, Xiaoyu flops over, light dimming as she attempts to catch her breath. She closes her eyes as her light droops forward, touching Eldrach's forehead. Something clicks in the Galvantula's mind: he's got to have this light all for himself, whatever it takes. Looming even closer, large eyes bugging to terrifying sizes, he touches his front legs to the light and greedily begins sapping more energy from it—but then it abruptly goes out, and he jumps back in shock. The light! Is it okay?! Was he maybe... a bit too harsh? He's going to have to be more careful...

Xiaoyu ♀ @ Reaper Cloth
Ability: Volt Absorb, Intimidate, Effect Spore
Health: 100%
Energy: 15%
Chills Left: 4/5
Status: Tiring quickly. Has an Aqua Ring (+1%/action). Toxic poisoned (3% last round). 10% energy Stockpiled. +1 Defense, +1 Special Defense.
Used: Attract ~ Captivate ~ Chill

Arena Status
  • It is raining (1 more action).

Damage and Energy

  • Eldrach's Health: 60%
  • Eldrach's Energy: 81% - 5% (Giga Drain) + 7% (Giga Drain) - 5% (Giga Drain) + 4% (Giga Drain) = 82%
  • Xiaoyu's Health: 100% - 3% (poison) + 3% (Aqua Ring) = 100%
  • Xiaoyu's Energy: 35% - 14% (Giga Drain) - 4% (Attract) - 2% (Captivate) - 8% (Giga Drain) + 8% (Chill) = 15%

Notes
  • Speed order: Eldrach (108) > Xiaoyu (67).
  • Sorry for the wait! I was waiting for one of you to post this in the e-ref thread but then MF just asked me to take over, so here I am.
  • I kind of have writer's block so a lot of my description was very clunky, but you've been waiting a long time. :C Sorry! I'll try to do better next round.
  • I really wanted to try flavouring Attract as something other than ~~wuv~~. See what you can do with it :O
  • The Attack drop from Xiayu's Intimidate faded after Eldrach was Attracted.
  • Metronome's bonus to Giga Drain's base power was reset after Eldrach Attract-failed. Giga Drain's Metronome counter is now at 1.
  • Not that this affected anything anyway, but Xiaoyu's attempt to Chill like a pop star in the rain ended up more like Chilling like a near-dead flopping fish in the rain. Sorry Xiaoyu. (Being Giga Drained as she tried to Chill also made things slightly more difficult.)
  • Despite the way I wrote Giga Drain the third action, it didn't actually have a chance of triggering Effect Spore since it isn't actually a contact move.
  • Superbird commands first.

It's 60 to 14, and we're in it to win it, Eldarach. Keep spamming, and try to keep your mind on the goal - which is your victory. You've got to assert your dominance over Xiaoyu, it's the only way everything can work out the right way.

Giga Drain (Energy) x3

Hmm, well a 45% chance might still work in our favour. Let's go with Eerie Impulse, then Chill for the rest of the round.

Eerie Impulse ~ Chill ~ Chill

two questions:

is the fountain deep enough to dive in?
Are there any streetlights nearby? Does the fountain have an electric mechanism? :O

a) No.

b) There don't appear to be, and I'm going to say yes to the electric mechanism.

edit: Also, I can't seem to reproduce that 9% I got for the second Giga Drain, so it's doing 8% now. Doesn't really affect much; Xiaoyu gains 1% energy.

Eldrach swears he's going to be more careful this time. Again he latches onto the Holy Light and begins leeching away, gulping hungrily in time with the beat from his Metronome. Slowly... carefully... he tries his best not to deplete all of the light, but he can't help getting carried away. Really carried away. The Galvantula greedily draws in more and more energy, almost unable to stop, until he suddenly notices with a jolt that the light's nearly dimmed completely, and Xiaoyu is floating limply on his side on the surface of the water. What has he done?! How could he have let this happen?! Eldrach scurries backward in despair, mentally scolding himself for taking his obsession with the light so far, but then to his relief the orb comes to life one last time, unleashing a strange pulse of electricity that makes Eldrach feel kind of queasy as his fur stands on end. But then it's over, and Xiaoyu flops over from the effort with a heavy finality, her forehead light extinguished completely, and doesn't awaken again.

Damage and Energy

Notes
  • Eldrach's Giga Drain was a critical hit. What a time for it, too.
  • Xiaoyu knocked herself out from energy loss after using Eerie Impulse.
  • And we're done! If anyone cares, after this round, Eldrach would have gotten the Felt Hat, and Xiaoyu would've gotten the Camo Cap. Great battle, both of you; the tide really turned at the end!
  • Once Zhorken assigns me as the e-ref for this battle, I can close it. Superbird gets $20 and a Rare Candy, uv gets $10, and Aletheia and I get $9 each. After the battle processes, Superbird can link this post in the bank to claim an extra $12 (and nudge Zhorken about the Rare Candy) and uv can link this post to claim an extra $6.
