[15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: Totodile)

Just an FYI, since pathos is gone for the time being I will be taking over as the ref for this battle :)

The first step of any successful seduction is catching your love's attention.

For this, turn you attention to chapter five, How to Get a Lick of Attention from the Cutie with the Huge Tongue. This Attraction is your first priority.

If you got hit by the attack last action, Giga Drain for some health; otherwise, Screech.

And it looks like this smitten... creature has a gift for you! Use Thief to get the gift from your beloved!

As soon as the second bout begins, Nyoom darts in close to Scootch, making sure she has his attention before displaying her wings in a show of beauty. Her exoskeleton gleams in the light of the rising sun, and she shoots him a coy wink. Scootch’s heart thuds in his chest, not even caring that she’s a bug and he’s a lizard - she’s wonderful! Sadly, all is fair in love and war, and he has his orders. In his open mouth, icy energy gathers, growing quickly into a respectable sphere; he bats it toward Nyoom with his tongue, and she hisses in pain as the cold strikes her dead on.

How dare he? Does he not believe in love? With a little vindictiveness, she reaches out with her mind and seizes some of his life force; green globs of energy float away, leaving him a little less bright-eyed, and some of them sink into her body, producing the opposite effect. Scootch frowns a little at this, not sure what her deal is - didn’t he just flirt with him? Why are girls so contradictory? Doing his best to set his feelings aside, he summons a jagged bolt of electricity, which when it hits her makes her twitch as the energy courses through her body before dissipating.

Nyoom is not amused. If he’s going to be like this, she decides, then she’ll teach him a lesson. In quick succession, she flits in, tosses her Lucky Egg away, snatches Scootch’s Razor Claw, and bonks him on the head with it. Scootch rubs the little bruise on his head, wincing as much from the sudden blow as from the realization that he probably deserved that. He sighs, wondering how he can make this relationship work. Hopefully she likes that item she got from him. Who knows? She might even forgive him. He watches as Nyoom’s wings, strengthened by action, kick up their speed a notch, and the round comes to a close.

Stare into his eyes all lovey-dovey. Make sure he's making eye contact, that he's admiring you, and use Hypnosis then. If he Protects or shies away from you, use Curse (don't curse at him, though). If he tries to Attract (or use anything rocky, hot, cold, or shocky) at you at any point, Detect, but only once, and certainly not on this first action.

If he's asleep, Dream Eater for health. If not, Bug Buzz.

End with Bug Buzz. If he's unhittable besides Substitute, Double Team.

We're going to play it safe on the first action and Protect against that Hypnosis, Scootch. She's trying to seduce you, my friend, but you need to move forward in this relationship on your own terms!

Some PDA never hurt anyone though! Waltz up to her and Wrap her up in a big hug. Tongue is allowed, encouraged in fact. What I'd love (and what I'm sure she'd love), would be if you wrapped your tongue all the way around her wings. We don't want her playing hard to get, do we Scootch? And if you can keep your limbs free it will only pay off in the future as you continue to impress.

Finally, if you can make it work without losing your grasp, go with a jaw-dropping Belly Drum. Who doesn't want their partner to have that delicious, chiseled, #fitlyfe body? I can tell you that that's certainly what Nyoom is looking for. If that doesn't work, just tickle her a little bit with the tip of your tongue using Lick.

If you do end up asleep, Sleep Talk a couple of times. At least you've only used moves so far that will force her into Detecting.

Hovering in place, Nyoom watches her opponent carefully. Scootch, however, sees no point in being careful, at least for the moment. How could he, especially when she’s gracing him with so much attention? So entranced is he by her gaze that he barely even notices falling into a deep slumber, curling up automatically on the floor. Visions of dragonflies dance in his head, and he smiles in his sleep.

Nyoom laughs to herself, but quietly. Her evil plan is going just as expected! But before she can move further, he mutters to himself, both inside and outside of the dream, and subconsciously talks himself into repeating his previous show of strength to prove himself. Icy energy gathers upon his tongue, and he half-sneezes it at Nyoom. Luckily for her, she’s been watching out for just this sort of thing, and she throws herself out of the way in a sudden burst of martial prowess. The beam of ice soars harmlessly past, striking one of the audience members, much to Nyoom’s amusement. Scootch, for his part, has the distinct feeling of having failed somehow, though part of him still clings to the dream of love.

Pulling herself together, Nyoom prepares to go on the offensive once more. Her rapidly beating wings move even faster, working themselves up into a dull roar. The sonic waves wash over Scootch, knocking him over and completely disrupting his dream of chasing after an aloof dragonfly. He mumbles in his sleep about not knowing how it would work anyway, and the bitter chill that has settled in his heart manifests itself as another ball of icy energy. He launches it, and this time it strikes true, making her shiver as she shakes the frost off her wings. She gives him a dirty look, but the Lickitung, dreaming on, is perfectly oblivious.

Sleep Talk can only call moves already used by the Pokemon, so I think Ice Beam and Thunderbolt are the only possibilities. Presumably, that would mean Nyoom would try and Detect against the first, though I could see her assuming that with Scootch asleep she shouldn't have to worry about super-effective moves. Also, why did Nyoom not use Dream Eater on the final action?

Nyoom didn't use Dream Eater on the third action because she wasn't given a conditional to do so.

You're right about Sleep Talk, though. I'll get on editing the reffing.

Reffing edited! Not much is different besides both Pokemon taking less damage. Let me know if something still looks off.

Looks fine to me.

Chill during the first action no matter what. If you're asleep on either of the final two actions, Sleep Talk. Belly Drum on the action you awaken, followed by a Giga Impact (single action) if you have the time.

Detect on the last action. If she wakes up on the third action, though, use Screech again.

Both Pokemon settle down. The audience looks on, waiting for something to happen, but neither of the fighters budge. The Yanma lets herself relax and regain her strength; the Lickitung does much the same, albeit with a subconscious effort. Not even a twitch catches the watchers’ eyes, and they sit back, bored. Because of this, no one notices as Scootch blinks his way to consciousness, squinting as he accommodates to the world’s brightness. He lets himself rest, deciding to shore up his strength - he’ll be needing it before too long.

Nyoom jumps when she sees Scootch right himself. Then she brushes it off, scoffing. She’ll make him regret coming to. Her wings rub furiously against each other, creating a shrill, ear-piercing shriek that makes him seize his ears in pain. His tongue lolls as he tries to keep it together. Eventually, when the noise dies down, he straightens, eyes narrowing. He has had it with this crap. Driven to show his dominance on the field, he pounds his chest with pink fists, driving himself into a fighting frenzy. Nyoom watches in consternation as his muscles bulk up and his scales grow more ragged; she starts to wonder if she should finish this up yet.

Looking on, waiting for him to make a move, Nyoom hovers in place, ready for anything. And she’s soon glad she did: orange energy flickers into existence around Scootch, surrounding him as if by flames. Every inch of him glows with power. Without bothering to bask in that power, he sprints toward her as fast as he can, creating a blinding streak that marks his trail. Wide-eyed, Nyoom throws herself out of the air, wimpering a little as the sheer force of Scootch’s attack lunges through the space she had occupied just half a second before. She buzzes to herself as he skids to a stop just before slamming into an audience member, panting from the huge burst of energy. The two Pokemon look to the ref, letting their heart rates slow, waiting for the verdict.

- Scootch’s energy: 80% + 10% (Chill) - 5% (Belly Drum) - 11% (Giga Impact) = 74%

Other Notes:
- Nyoom outspeeds Scootch (125 > 30).
- Scootch woke up on the first action.
- I pondered for a while on what Nyoom should do on the third action. From ILS's orders, Detect looked to be the default move to use, while Screech seemed to be reserved for if Scootch woke up on that specific action (as implied from being in the exact context of the second action, which laid down the same conditional). So Nyoom used Detect. If this seems problematic, just let me know.
- Giga Impact would have dealt 24% damage.
- Nyoom’s health and energy total comes to 136, while Scootch’s total comes to 135. Nyoom wins the Elementalist mastery and Scootch wins the Set-Up Specialist mastery, giving each of them 20 points. Their total scores come to 156 for Nyoom and 155 for Scootch, meaning that Nyoom barely nabs the win for this bout!

Time for Luke Skywalker. Use the Force, Luke!

The final bout commences. Two psychic-types emerge in twin beams of light, solidifying as they take their respective stances. Nyoom’s replacement is a being of extraterrestrial origin, with his head the size of the rest of his body. Big green eyes take in the scene, and the three colored lights on his hands that serve as digits flicker, as if flexing. Facing him is a plump pink tapir, bouncing a little as he hovers just above the floor. Puffs of pink mist float from the oval spot between his eyes. The two acknowledge each other with slight nods, understanding that neither will be holding back for this battle. In the audience, several people refocus on the scene, ready to watch.

For a moment, neither does anything. Luke Skywalker is the speedier of the two, but he spends a few seconds to watch for Addlemunch’s move. Addlemunch doesn’t try to pull any sneaky tricks, though - or at least, none of the opponent-crippling variety. Golden light flickers to life before him, shielding him with a screen that bends the sunlight and makes his night-sensitive eyes more comfortable. He chirps in satisfaction. Luke Skywalker, seeing now that no status are forthcoming, makes his move. His hands come together, then steadily part, creating a swirling, seething sphere of supernatural energy. The deep purple ball is hurled through the air, only to hit the golden shield, which slows the Shadow Ball considerably. Nevertheless, a fair amount of ghostly matter makes it through to strike Addlemunch, who blinks as it seeps into his flower-patterned skin.

Unpleasant as that attack was, Addlemunch has a hunch that his opponent will find it even more so. As Luke Skywalker watches for his next move, Addlemunch forms his own spooky orb of spookiness, sending it streaking right through the Light Screen, as if it wasn’t there, before it impacts the Elgyem. The alien half buzzes, half hums from the pain of the attack, but he collects himself quickly. With a quick bit of focus, he retaliates with a single pulse of electricity, which hones in on Addlemunch’s own electric field. Thanks to the Light Screen, it’s slightly worse than a tickle, but Luke Skywalker is okay with that - a hit is a hit, after all.

Addlemunch is confident by now. Tapping into a third elemental well, he floats earthward, pauses for a second, and stomps down on the floor with surprising force. Around Luke Skywalker, the floor splinters to rubble, jumping into the air from the geologic command … and promptly collapses in a pile to the side. The Munna frowns, wondering how that could have happened, but the Elgyem doesn’t wait around to let him figure that out. His eyes narrow and he funnels his concentration into applying a curse, a curse that will prevent Addlemunch from copying any of the moves he just used. Swaths of psychic energy sweep over to the Munna, binding him like ribbons before disappearing into the ether. Addlemunch frowns, feeling like those techniques he’s seen Luke Skywalker do this round are at the tip of his tongue. Probably nothing important, he decides. He can do this regardless of curse trickery.

That Rock Tomb missing is a pain, but not the end of the world. We're still in the lead, Addlemunch. Let's keep it that way.

With the formalities out of the way, the battlers get down to dishing out damage. Luke Skywalker goes first, rushing forward as fast as his little legs can allow, ignoring the Light Screen like it’s not even there, and roughly tackling Addlemunch to the ground. The Munna squeaks as a series of blows rains down on him, and when the Elgyem finally backs off, Addlemunch realizes that his Moon Stone necklace is now settling into place around that guy’s neck! Righteous anger simmers inside him. How dare he! Deciding to show him that he doesn’t even need that stone to win, he calls up a sizable amount of electricity, letting it crackle around him for a moment before channeling the energy into a focused beam, which strikes true. Luke stumbles, but Addlemunch is even more pleased with the bits of electricity that remain sparking in the air around him, just waiting to contribute to his next moves.

Luke is skeptical about his foe’s changes in attitude. What’s this guy on about? Fighting is fighting, and any tactic is fair game. Remembering the Munna’s earlier use of Rock Tomb, he decides to take part in that as well, and stomps down hard. This time, when the floor around the target Pokemon crumbles into rubble, it succeeds in burying him under a pile of the rock-like debris. He nods to himself at a job well done, then watches as Addlemunch struggles to free himself from his prison - Addlemunch fails, having slight difficulty with one heavy fragment of timber on his foreleg. Nevertheless, he can afford the concentration to launch his next attack: a sudden, dazzling flash across his entire body, shining brightly through the cracks of his confines and searing Luke’s eyes. Luke tries to shield himself, but the damage is already done, quite literally. The soothing presence of the Moon Stone refreshes him just a little, but he knows he’ll have to step up his game.

The audience looks on as Luke, taking advantage of the Light Screen having just flickered out of existence, prepares another Ball of Shadows, this one undulating on its quick journey from Elgyem to Munna. Addlemunch flinches as the ghostly orb, which has helpfully blown away a little bit of the plaster covering, nevertheless seeps into his skin, planting nerve-wracking thoughts that make him subconsciously preoccupied. He falters in his attempts to free himself, wondering whether he can stand many more blows like that. Nevertheless, drawing upon the sparking power left over from his Charge Beam, he draws forth the life that floats on the air and around the onlookers, letting it coalesce into a brilliantly green ball of power. With a thought, he sends it slamming into Luke, who grumbles violently as the natural energy washes over him. Encouraged by his own success, no matter how small, Addlemunch manages to pull himself right out of the heap, though not without cost - his foreleg, injured as it is, will slow him down.

Both Pokemon prepare themselves for their last round - this is the one that will determine everything.
