Of course I'm not forcing you to do anything if you don't want to, but seriously, what have you got to lose? Five seconds of your life?

Banning Books

I see where you're coming from in the part where you say they should be allowed to read porn, but, please, tell me how exactly they need it.

Well, that's where I live. and I'm assuming that all of you people live in developed countries. those places have freedom of speech and porn might be interesting for the teenagers but you're right whoever said little kids shouldn't read porn. Porn+kids=disaster teen+porn=happy teens

I live in a developing country. Still got freedom of speech, but, just a heads-up.

Also, I never expressed my opinion on whether they should read porn or not. I was merely asking you to explain why you, at least as you said earlier, say they need to.

Lastly, I don't see how a teen reading porn would be less disasterous than a kid doing so. Actually, becuase of the hormones, it might be more.

I think books shouldn't be banned. Because this is America. It's a country that has freedom of speech. And banning books would be like denying freedom of speech. Kids need to read all the books that they get their hands on. This includes porn.

books should never be banned just if they are explicit should come with a warning label of *MAY BE UNSUITABLE FOR MINORS* or whatever

That List said:
28. The New Joy of Gay Sex - Charles Silverstein

Hahahaha. A classic.

I can kind of get my head around some of these - not that I agree, but I can fathom why an ultra-conservative might want them banned (Anarchist's Cookbook, The Terrorist... hell, even Heather Has Two Mommies), I really don't understand why books that are helpful/educational are on there (Where Did I Come From?, What's Happening to My Body?), but I absolutely cannot comprehend why anyone on this earth would find James and The Giant Peach or How To Eat Fried Worms offensive.

Also, it's kind of funny how books by women make up nearly 50% of that list (somewhere between 45-48, depending on the initialed people I didn't know), while (according to the Guardian) women only wrote ~19 of the 100 greatest books.

I have a school that bans Of Mice and Men. I also had a teacher that forced us to read it anyway. Admittedly, it was a sort of afterschool activity, but still.

Haha; all three books the kids at my school had to study for GCSE (Lord of the Flies, Of Mice and Men, To Kill a Mockingbird) are on that list. I'd love to know what the, uh, book-banning people would've had us study instead.

Yes, of course, the Bible is controversial--but that's not to say it shouldn't be studied. It provides good examples of certain types of stories, such as parables, proverbs, etc. For that matter, the Torah and Koran both apply as equally controversial texts.

There's a naked boob on the beach page.

i don't even think it's naked i think it's like mostly..naked :l ANYWAYS, who goes through their books looking for every detail like that? I never noticed that before :O Fahrenheit 411(?) was banned from our school cause some kids mother cried to the principle (literally cried) but our epic English teacher just gave the girl 3 times the homework and everyone else just had to read it. (the girl was bragging aboot how her she got her mom to ban it so we wouldn't have homework, what a bitch. it's a very good book >:l )

I think the book banning should be in levels.

Like, sexual and adult books shouldn't be allowed in middle and elementary schools, but I don't think that banning books is all that necessary. Banning books because of sexual references or racial slurs kind of creates an entire era of ignorance, if you ask me. Children will here words on TV, not have read a book, where the word could have used and explained better, and go out into the world simply repeating what they heard on Family Guy or The Office.

i agree with the end. Legitimate authors don't spam cuss words in their books for no reason at all, there's usually a point to it. I wish the people who don't like the books could be more open minded and at least read them once with out bias. Also, I decided to randomly go to the middle school Thursday, and there was a blank Reading Chart(recording how many pages the kids have read) on the wall. Nice job, Teacher. Way to destroy our future. >__>

Google quickly delivers this:

That boob's definitely naked! But yeah, censoring it's crazy. Banning the entire book over it is just outright inane.

In that case, do you care to explain more clearly?

Easy. They probably see issues with the books that are minor compared to the gruesome topics sometimes covered in the Bible. Of course the Bible is valid lit.

It's the same people that require Macbeth for stage plays but ban Alice Cooper.
