Need help thinking up random quests...

I'm in the process of planning a cycle of fantasy novels (The Gemsinger Chronicles), of which I have a basic plot planned for book 1--but I need some ideas for adventures for my party to get into en route to the different plot points.

Any ideas?

This sounds ominously like taking the structure of an RPG and applying it to a novel. Not a good idea, believe me.

How about this: instead of random quests, have your characters do something related to the plot, something that will uncover new details that the characters didn't previously know, or is in some other way related to the plot, like if your characters were running for president, they could stop and give a speech about why they want to be president. Terrible example, but hopefully it helped make my point. xD;

There's an idea...random quests as I initially thought (and as opaltiger pointed out), would likely need a book to themselves.
