Arena: Tower of Mastery

After a long spiraled climb around a humongous Mega Lucario statue, approved trainers will find the topmost location of the Tower of Mastery to be a large semicircular balcony with a lovely view of distant mountains, the sea, and awe-inspiring clear skies. It has been historically the place where chosen trainers are given Mega Rings, designated with the purpose of reminding those trainers to set their sights ever skyward.

For this round of the tournament, Battle Arena (or, as it were, Battle Korrina) rules will apply. Each pair of Pokémon sent out will only battle for up to three rounds before being recalled, at which point the sums of their remaining Health and Energy percentages will be compared to determine the winner of the bout, and the next two Pokémon are sent out thereafter. The first to win two bouts wins the match as a whole. Furthermore, while sending out Pokémon at the beginning of each bout, the trainers will also PM their assigned referee to pick one of the Masteries listed below, and the Masteries chosen that way will be publically announced in the battle thread before commands are issued (however, in the third and final bout, the masteries from the previous bout are applied, and no new ones are chosen). These two Masteries will be the only ones applicable in the current bout, and by fulfilling the conditions that they outline, players can have a score of 20 added to their final Health and Energy sum (up to a maximum of 40). More details are outlined in the tournament round post. The following are the masteries that can be chosen from:

  • Movepool Master: Awarded to the Pokémon that used the highest amount of different moves during the bout.
  • Elementalist: Awarded to the Pokémon that used moves of the highest amount of different types.
  • Skill Striker: Awarded to the Pokémon that used the most moves with 70 or less Base Power (after accounting for effects that change a move's Base Power).
  • Efficiency Expert: Awarded to the Pokémon that spent the least energy during the bout (restored energy, such as that gained by Chills or energy-targeting indirect recovery, does not contribute to this Mastery).
  • Set-Up Specialist: Awarded to the Pokémon that had the highest net total of stat changes at the end of the bout (e.g., 6+ Attack and 2- Defense makes for a total of 4+).
  • Plague Pawner: Awarded to the Pokémon that inflicted the most status conditions on the opponent.
  • Daredevil: Awarded to the Pokémon that had the least Health remaining at the end of the bout.
  • Own Worst Enemy: Awarded to the Pokémon that took the most self-inflicted damage during the round (only self-inflicted damage from regular sources like recoil and costs are counted; intentionally attacking oneself does not contribute to this Mastery).
  • Obstinate Orders: Awarded to the trainer that used the least conditionals in their commands. Only the trainer who is issuing the first commands in the current bout can choose this Mastery.

Alright, the masteries are:

I liek Squirtles - Plague Pawner

Eta Carinae - Set-Up Specialist

ILS, you can post commands now.

Re: [15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: pathos)

You're slower, and that's a damn shame, Freela. But let's make it interesting.

I want you to start by Taunting Plattitude. If he tries Attracting you, use Mirror Coat- I don't know how that would work, but let's cross our fingers, er, appendages. If he has a sub up before that, Ice Beam. After that, a thorough Wring Out is in order, but if you weren't attacked last action or a sub is up, Water Spout instead. Finish with Confuse Ray. If during the second or third action the little bug is Protecting or untargetable (besides Substitute), use Acid Armor.

Re: [15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: pathos)

Well, Platt, I don't want you to get all fired up quite yet, so we're not going to take that Taunt. Now, we could be boooring and just throw up a Protect, but I think you can do better than that. Instead, the second he starts dishing out the burns, I want you to give me some good vibrations. A Bug Buzz should drown it out. Keep that drone going until he gives up and shuts his trap.

Now that Wring Out's going to hurt, but better get prepared for later and just set up a Safeguard. That Confuse Ray would be nasty otherwise, and as I said, it's good if you have a clear head.

Finally, wait him out on the last action. Make yourself look nice and vulnerable so he goes with Confuse Ray. Then, after he's used it, tell him how good of a job he's doing and Encore it. That should keep us nice and safe for when I have to command first next round. If he figures out that he can't confuse you through a Safeguard and decides to use Acid Armor, do a Swords Dance to even the score.

If somehow you fail to properly buzz on the first action, let him have it with a few Giga Drains on his health.

The pokemon waste no time on their surroundings. This is it, the battle they’ve been waiting for, the big leagues. They both float on either side of the magnificent statue - Freela a bit eerily, and Plattitude with a faint humming sound, both prepared to crush the other to pieces.

Plattitude moves first. His wings speed up, creating a horrible buzzing noise that seems to vibrate the air around. It gets so loud Freela’s head feels like it’ll burst, but she taunts through it, yelling jeers at the stupid bug as loud as she can’t think of anything more to say. It’s pointless, anyhow - Plattitude clearly can’t hear her, and the noise just hurts so much that talking is a waste of effort.

The buzzing finally stops, allowing Plattitude to stretch his little arms in front of him like a mime, building up a near-invisible wall. It sparkles occasionally as the light hits it, but otherwise it’s completely imperceptable, and definitely not solid enough to stop Freela. Frustrated now, she drifts towards the ledyba, stretching her tentacles out and wrapping them around him - and then squeezing. She holds on tight, wrapping harder the more he struggles like a python, sucking the life out of him until she’s got no strength left and he pushed his way out, panting and out of breath.

She still looks peeved. That wasn’t enough. But confusion is in order, now, and so she summons up tiny orbs of light, flickering them towards the bug - they love light, don’t they? And indeed, Plattitude applauds her achievement, though he doesn’t seem too enamoured by the display itself. He does shower her with compliments, though, so she figures she might as well do some more…

Re: [15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: pathos)

Why did Wring Out do 9% damage? It should've done more since Plattitude was at full health.

Re: [15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: pathos)

Nothing too complicated here, Platt. We don't want her to snap her out of that Encore. Avoiding Cursed Body is nice too. Give me 3 Swords Dances.

Swords Dance x3

Sorry for the very boring round, pathos.

Re: [15] I Liek Squirtles vs Eta Carinae (ref: pathos)

At least he won't have much work ahead of him.

I don't know if you can Chill during an Encore, I guess it defeats the purpose. But let's try! That won't hurt. However, Freela, I want you to wait until the end of your last action (the latest you can), and see if you can sneak in that Confuse Ray!

Though having no discernible swords, Plattitude begins to shimmy and rub his little hands together, mimicking an odd dance he must have seen on tv or something. It seems to work, though - he feels a rush of adrenaline, pushing him to fight harder, better, faster, stronger… He hardly notices as another flurry of lights bounces off his safeguard barrier, only pausing to give a few brief claps. It’s apparently enough for Freela, who blushes at the attention.

Not wanting to break with routine, Plattitude continues his dance, and Freela emits more glowing lights. They bounce off the ledyba’s screen as before, and she seems a bit downhearted now, perhaps thinking it’s time to… stop… Soon, though, not yet!! One last confuse ray, for old time’s sake.

So as Plattitude dances, she waits. Patiently, so patiently, until the dance is done and maybe his screen will fade and - yes, there, the brief flicker as it dies out, and she releases more bright lights and finally, finally she receives the attention she deserves! Plattitude’s eyes widen in wonderment, entranced at these amazing orbs created just for him, and even as they disappear into the darkness they still seem to glow on in his eyes, forever dancing for him to watch…

Fingers crossed!

Start with a 10% sub, then a Psych Up to make yourself feel better, and end with a Return if you're feeling really good, Frustration if you're feeling really bad, or Waterfall if you're not really feeling it.

No use stressing out, Platt. Chill a couple of times, then finish with an Agility.

Round Three

Eta Carinae
Ledyba
Plattitude ♂ @ Leftovers
Ability: Swarm
Health: 93%
Energy: 81%
Status: "So pretty, my precious lights..." Severely confused (50% failure chance). +6 Attack.

I liek Squirtles
Frillish-f
Freela
Ability: Cursed Body
Health: 89%
Energy: 73%
Status: ":3 My grand finale!!"

------------------------------

Lights... such pretty lights... Plattitude probably has commands to carry out, or something, but he just can't tear his gaze from the spectacular show long enough to remember them. Slowly, slowly he inches closer, but the lights always seem to recede just far enough to be out of his reach, and he plops himself down with a huff. A little freaked out, Freela backs a short distance away before exhaling a stream of foamy bubbles, concentrating a bit of her own life force into them before clumsily adjusting them here and there with her tendrils, shaping them into a bubbly blobby little jellyfish. She'll call it... Freelala. A fine name, indeed.

Oh, yeah. There's a battle. With significant effort Plattitude manages to tear his gaze away from the swirling lights, and immediately regrets it. But no! No staring. No chasing the lights. He's got to relax. Deliberately he closes his eyes and curls up on the balcony floor, and so he doesn't notice Freela coming right up close, staring at him intently. Black and white swirls emanate from her eyes, seeming to grow larger and larger, and had they not been closed Plattitude's eyes would have been mirroring them, as the Frillish opens up a link between their minds. Freela waves her tendrils in delight as she feels them growing lighter and yet stronger, until she feels she could crush a soda pop with one tentacle...

It's been long enough. Plattitude's eyes snap open, and then first things he sees are those intriguing lights again, swirling right in front of him. Ooh! Pretty! He can totally catch them now! Forgetting the battle yet again, the Ledyba lunges forward, bent on touching the lights, but again they drift backward, and he smashes headfirst into the ground. Owww. He leapt a bit too hard, there... he really should have remembered to keep his newly-buffed power in check. He doesn't have long to ruminate on this, though, as Freela takes the opportunity to exercise her new strength, bearing down hard on him while surrounded by a veil of water. She sends him crashing back into the balcony railing with a thud, and he frantically shakes water off his wings as the bout comes to an end.

Eta Carinae
Ledyba
Plattitude ♂ @ Leftovers
Ability: Swarm
Health: 70%
Energy: 89%
Status: Embarrassed. Mildly confused (10% failure chance). +6 Attack.
Used: [confused] ~ Chill ~ [confused]

I liek Squirtles
Frillish-f
Freela
Ability: Cursed Body
Health: 79%
Energy: 59%
Status: "Did I do good, did I?!" Has a 10% Substitute. +6 Attack.
Used: Substitute (10%) ~ Psych Up ~ Waterfall

Arena Status
  • Nothing of note.

Damage and Energy
  • Plattitude's Health: 93% - 10% (confusefail) - 16% (Waterfall) + 3% (Leftovers) = 70%
  • Plattitude's Energy: 81% + 10% (Chill) - 2% (confusefail) = 89%
  • Freela's Health: 89% - 10% (Substitute) = 79%
  • Freela's Substitute: 10%
  • Freela's Energy: 73% - 5% (Substitute) - 6% (Psych Up) - 3% (Waterfall) = 59%

Notes
  • I was more forgiving with confusion rolls for Chills, but Plattitude still rolled for confusion on action one. However, since his orders didn't involve him moving at all, he didn't hit himself in confusion, but was too distracted by the lights to actually carry out his orders to Chill. His confusion chance also didn't decrease that action.
  • Chilling cleared up Plattitude's confusion chance an additional 5%.
  • Plattitude rolled a flat 1 for confusion the third action. Damn. Hitting himself so hard took an extra 5% off his confusion chance.
  • Under the old crit mechanics, Waterfall would've been a crit, too. RNG stahp.
  • Annnnd Plattitude has a total of 159 to Freela's 138. Both Pokémon tied for Set-Up Specialist, bringing their totals up to 169 and 148 respectively. Freela was the only one who inflicted a status condition, giving her the Plague Pawner Mastery, but it's just barely not enough, bringing her to 168 points to Plattitude's 169. Better luck next bout, ILS!
  • Next up: I liek Squirtles sends out, then Eta Carinae sends out. Both of you should PM your choice of Masteries to me. Remember that these same choices will be sticking around for the final bout!

Eta Carinae commands first.
