Centrico Plaza is the crown jewel resting in the core of Lumiose City. Just the Prism Tower, standing at the very center of it, is already one of the most widely recognized landmarks of the entire region; and even the rest of the location isn't too shabby, with verdant gardens, beautifully patterned cobblestone pathes, the sound of the river running underneath the floor, and a surrounding circle of mid-height Kalosian houses, the splendorous local arquitecture adorning the plaza as a foil. Many businesses have come into being at the ground floors of the area, but today, the world-famous roundway of egg hatching is all Asber's, with barriers sealing off all of the many roads leading into the city's very own hub -- and of course, curious crowds gathering at the edges to watch the competition.

For this round of the tournament, each player has been loaned a fresh Pokémon from Kalos. Battles in this round will not last longer than five rounds; if neither Pokémon has fainted by the end of the fifth round, the winning trainer will be the one with the greatest sum of health and energy remaining on their Pokémon.

All right, let's see what we can do with this fletchling...

To start, use attract to give yourself a buffer. If that fails for some reason, just use aerial ace! If you couldn't use attract last turn, do so now; else, use fly. If you're still on the ground for your last action, use hidden power to see what we have there.

Attract/aerial ace ~ fly/attract ~ finish fly/hidden power
Is secret power considered "other" for this arena?

Let's do a Magic Coat to bounce that Attract first. Take your chances with the following Attract, and use Will-O-Wisp instead. Finish off with an Incinerate to get rid of that berry.

A week after the reopening of the ASB League, everyone was still riding high on excitement, but it was kicked up another twenty notches with the announcement of a tournament. The grandeur of Lumiose City evidently made all that excitement go to the trainers’ heads as they raided cafes and bought horrendously expensive clothing and otherwise did everything but prepare for battle. As a result, few trainers had properly prepared their squads for the first round, so the ASB League simply threw its hands up and handed out rentals. In case of chaos, the likes of which the league often saw and was perhaps instrumental in, money was a great thing to have.

Dazel was given a small robin with a disproportionately large chest (that’s what Big Pecks means, right?), while I liek Squirtles obtained a familiar starter Pokemon, a Fennekin. Both Pokemon were also given an Oran Berry, which was met with joyful salivation from Fletchling and an ear twitch from Fennekin. After the rentals were introduced to their temporary trainers, the referee signaled to the battlers to take their positions, and with the blow of a whistle, the battle began.

Even though the referee had signaled the beginning of the match, Fennekin was still as calm as, well, a vixen. Seemingly unconcerned with battle, she continued to groom herself, but the discerning eye would just be able to make out the shimmering shroud of psychic energy around her. Unfortunately, Fletchling was too busy thinking of smooth pick-up lines and failed to notice. With a coy warble he hopped up to Fennekin, who looked up with an expression of mild disinterest, puffed out his chest, and began laying on the sweetness.

“I think I’ll be needing a Cheri Berry after this battle, because you’re stunning!” Fletchling delivered his killer line with confidence, fully expecting Fennekin to swoon into his wings right then and there. Instead, the air around Fennekin shimmered slightly, and then Fletchling heard his speech echoed back at him. Odd. Fennekin still looked indifferent. “Are you an HM? Because you’re unforgettable!” Again, a faint shimmer and then an echo. Fletchling tilted his head. Damn, he sounded smooth. “You better get me a Revive, because you’re a knockout!” Ohhh, yeah.

Fletchling was so taken by himself that all thoughts of obeying commands from his temporary trainer flew out the window, to be replaced pick-up lines of similar cringeworthiness. While he was busy cooing over himself, Fennekin chuckled at the ridiculousness of it all and padded up to the small bird, a mote of blue flame already growing in her mouth. With a gentle exhale the Will-o-Wisp careened forth, hitting Fletchling square in the side. He shrieked and flapped his wings to douse the flames, but the damage was already done – he now sported a nasty burn that smarted whenever he made any sudden movement.

Unfortunately for Fennekin, revenge for interrupting self-love was more important than self-love itself, at least in this instance. Fletchling gave an angry squawk as he reached deep into himself, not to pull out another one-liner but to tap into his own unique well of energy. A multitude of small crackling spheres appeared around Fletchling, and with another squawk, they shot towards Fennekin, pelting her with unpleasant little shocks.

That attack was relatively easy to shake off, though, and Fennekin repaid her opponent by breathing out a long, thin tongue of fire. Fletchling squawked in pain as yet more of his feathers were singed. Quickly he flapped off to a safe distance, his feather smoking, but his Oran Berry was not so lucky. Fletchling was too small and weak to fly away with his tasty morsel intact, and could do nothing but stare mournfully as it was reduced to a pile of ash.

Good job, Fennekin. Great start.
Let's keep it rolling, shall we? Start off with a Fire Spin. If he decides to Protect, however, Safeguard. After that, Hypnosis. If he has a Protect up, Chill. Finish off with Dream Eater; if he isn't sleeping, Flame Charge, and if he isn't Protecting, Chill.

I fucking hate magic coat.

All right, fletchling, if you can get over yourself, use a fire spin as well to turn that back around on fennekin. Next, use protect; we can stand to have the opponent chill, so long as you remain awake. Finally, use swords dance while fennekin slacks off.

Fire spin ~ protect ~ swords dance

Man, that attract really backfired. So much for this battle, hah.

Fletchling puffed his chest out, trying to look as threatening as possible before launching an attack to punish Fennekin for destroying his berry. His bravado faded, however, to be replaced by a look of confusion. Fire Spin? He cocked his head at his trainer and gave a questioning chirp. While he was able to use fire to some degree, he was pretty sure he was unable to manipulate flames to that degree. His trainer gave no further commands, though, so Fletchling spat out a few embers and flapped his wings to try to whip up a flame tornado. The embers simply flickered and died, and Fletchling’s wings drooped, along with his ego.

Fennekin chuckled to herself. What a loser! A demonstration was in order. She inhaled deeply and breathed out a long stream of flames, then used her psychic powers to turn it back on itself. The ring of fire steadily grew taller until it was a towering blaze; then, with a final psychic push, Fennekin sent it roaring towards Fletchling. The little bird was engulfed in the flames. He sat, cringing, in the middle of the storm where it was the least intense, though flames still darted at him periodically to singe his feathers.

Fletchling was frightened and demoralized enough to ignore self-indulgent urges and focus on self-preservation instead. Quickly he erected a thick, impenetrable shield with pure energy. It gave him some respite from the flames, but he knew he would not be able to hold the barrier for long. Meanwhile, Fennekin squinted through the flames and managed to make out the telltale green shimmer of a Protect shield. Knowing full well that it would render all attempts at hypnotizing her opponent useless, Fennekin instead curled up on the ground and shut her eyes for a quick catnap.

After a few more moments, Fletchling’s barrier became too tiring to hold so he let it drop, panting. He then mulled over his last command. A Swords Dance would probably give him a much-needed ego boost, so he complied with his trainer’s demands. Shrieking a tribal battle cry, Fletchling performed a series of aerial acrobatics, wincing as his wings clipped the Fire Spin on several occasions. As he flew, he scraped his talons against each other. When he landed again, new strength and confidence surged through him and his talons felt wickedly sharp. He was ready to inflict some serious pain, despite his side stinging from his previous burn.

Fennekin waited for Fletchling to land before breathing out a burst of fire and running through it, cloaking her body in flames. She sprinted at the bird silhouette she could see through the Fire Spin and successfully barreled into her opponent, knocking him to the ground. Before Fletchling could recover, Fennekin leapt nimbly out of the surrounding blaze before it could cause her harm. Feeling excited from the heat of the flames, Fennekin ran around in a few figure eights before her Flame Charge died down. Though the fire was gone, she still felt energized and lighter on her feet than before.

Amazing display, Hestia!

Before Fletchling could fly out of range, the newly-christened Hestia delved into his mind and took stock of his mental state. He had pushed his previous failures out of his mind and was now reveling in the power that the Swords Dance had brought him. Hestia chuckled a bit at his overblown ego, but linked their minds anyway, eager to share the added strength that confidence could bring. As their thoughts synced, Hestia felt her previous excitement and nimbleness leave her paws, to be replaced with tensed muscles and sharpened claws.

When Hestia returned to her own mind, she saw Fletchling puffing out his chest and strutting about importantly. Clearly his ego had grown further still, until it was so big it crowded out any thoughts of battle. It was a wonder how Fletchling managed to be so convinced of his own superiority, when he was bruised and burned quite a bit more than his opponent and was surrounded by a great cage of flames besides. However, it was to Hestia’s advantage that her opponent remained so big-headed, so she held in her snickers.

Hestia’s next commands made her tilt her head in confusion. Fletchling currently posed no threat. Regardless, she obeyed her trainer and erected a sturdy shield made of pure energy, then crouched behind it, head lowered, to brace for any impact. None came, though, and after about half a minute Hestia peeked out, only to find her opponent was no longer trapped within her Fire Spin, which was starting to sputter and dissipate.

While Hestia had huddled in her soundproof barrier, Dazel had yelled and pleaded with his rental Pokemon to do something other than strut about like a fat city bird. That unflattering comparison had snapped Fletchling out of his self-indulgence and he grudgingly flapped his wings, carrying himself higher and higher until he was almost level with the top of the Prism Tower. By the time Hestia looked up, Fletchling was merely a dot in the sky.

Hestia knew that Fletchling would soon dive down and attack, but her shield was simply too exhausting to keep up, and it began to flicker. Cringing, she redoubled her efforts as Fletchling began his descent, but despite that the Protect faded away entirely, leaving Hestia panting with exertion and vulnerable. Mere moments after her shield dissipated, Fletchling dove down on her, brutally bearing her to the ground. Hestia cried out as she was crushed against the pavement and pushed back a few feet.

Hestia took a moment to recover, gingerly finding her footing again and shaking grit out of her pelt. Though her entire body still ached, she smirked at Fletchling, goading him to strike again. “You call that an attack?” she taunted. “You’re no better than those dopey, overweight city Pidoves!” Chirping in supreme indignation, Fletchling flew at Hestia again, but in his rage his attack was poorly aimed and Hestia dodged with ease. As she leapt to the side, she flashed out a paw, smacking Fletchling square in the chest and causing him to lose his balance. With an unbecoming squawk Fletchling swerved to the left and careened into the ground, smacking into the ground rather painfully.

Why didn’t anyone tell me I put Fletchling’s ability as Pig Pecks ;;
I forgot to change Fletchling’s attraction severity in the end-of-round summary last round. It’s been corrected at the beginning of this round.
Since Fletchling managed to escape Fire Spin by Flying, he didn’t take the residual 1% on the second action.

I didn't tell you because I found it amusing.

This round didn't go as well, did it, Hestia? Let's fix that.
Start off with a Flame Charge to recuperate the Speed you lost. If he Protects, use Sunny Day. Follow up with Sunny Day if you haven't used it, and Fire Blast if you have. Finish with Fire Blast or, if he tries Protecting, Double Team (3 clones).

I'll name you, I guess? I'm not sure what the point of that is since I'll be giving you up soon, but other people are doing it, so you're Fawkes.

Firstly, Fawkes, protect against that fire blast, seeing as a sunny day will benefit you, as well. Next, use me first to turn that fire blast around on Hestia. Finally, use acrobatics to deal a bit of raw damage. That's what she gets for burning up your precious berry.

While Fawkes still had plenty of fight in him, he was starting to flag, and he didn’t fancy taking any more blows. He eagerly poured energy into the air around himself, watching it form into a solid translucent dome, then huddled in the middle with his wings covering his head. Hestia, recognizing the telltale shimmer of the Protect shield and Fawkes’ posture, stopped stoking her inner flames in preparation for attacking and gave a petulant sniff. Fawkes couldn’t ward off the inevitable; in fact, he was simply giving her time to prepare even more devastating attacks. Hestia tilted her head to the sky and howled, the call somehow sounding bright and cheery rather than solemn. As if in response, the sun seemed to grow brighter, and what clouds remained in the sky scuttled away as if they were afraid of the harsh light.

After bringing out the sun in its full glory, Hestia narrowed her eyes at Fawkes, ready to act the instant he dropped his shield. He did so a moment later, panting slightly, and Hestia grinned, small tongues of flame already licking around her fangs. She opened her mouth wide to reveal a ball of fire, growing gradually as she pulled more and more flames from her fire sac. She did this unhurriedly, because she knew the result would be positively explosive – but in taking her time, she allowed Fawkes to analyze her attack and turn it back on her. Aided by his keen observations and his own limited fire abilities, Fawkes had charged up a sphere of scorching fire that was even bigger than Hestia’s. It barreled forwards, five great arms unfurling to create a star of fire before slamming into Hestia. Though she was no stranger to fire, the star-shaped blaze, aided by the sun, was too hot for Hestia to bear, and she screeched in pain. By the time the Fire Blast had rolled over her, the smell of singed fur was overwhelming her nose. Ugh.

Luckily, Hestia had managed to clamp her jaws on her own ball of fiery destruction to prevent it from dissipating. She spat it out now, the attack again taking on its true form as it traveled. Perhaps Hestia’s Fire Blast wasn’t as brilliant or blistering as Fawkes’, but it was still incredibly powerful, and Fawkes did not have the same heat resistance as Hestia did. The poor bird screeched in agony as his skin burned, cracked, and peeled, and his feathers were set alight. For a few moments he was in too much pain to move; when he regained his senses, he flapped about frantically, trying to put out the flames before irreparable damage was done to his flight feathers.

Fawkes took a few more moments to rest – surely he deserved that much after being set on fire – before lifting himself into the air with a groan. His burns were really making it difficult to move around too much, but he had to push on. With a screech he hurtled himself into Hestia, slashing her back with his beak and zipping on before she could even think of defending herself. Fawkes then banked sharply and struck again, opening another wound, before smoothly looping over her head and scratching at his opponent’s large, sensitive ears. Hestia wailed as she was hit from every possible angle, barely able to lift her paws before Fawkes buffeted her undefended side. At last Fawkes backed off, panting slightly but thrilled at the damage he inflicted; Hestia was now burned as well as bleeding from scratches all over her body.

The smile was quickly wiped off his face, however, when Fawkes saw flames dribble out of Hestia’s closed jaws. Sure enough, when she opened her mouth a few moments later, a familiar ball of fire burst forth, flames extending from the core to form a five-pointed star. Exhausted by his previous attack, Fawkes could only close his eyes before the blaze was upon him. It burned horribly, the ravenous flames eating at his feathers and skin, burning and burning until the very nerves underneath were destroyed. At least, that’s what it felt like – Fawkes was in so much agony that he almost felt numb to it all.

...Well. I had a feeling it would unfold that way, but it doesn't make it any better.

All right, Fawkes, start off with an acrobatics, and then channel your rage into a frustration. Next, use acrobatics again. Nothing particularly intricate, since we're moving first and this is the last turn— just do me a favour and kick that fennekin's ass, even if it takes you down with it. And even if the damage cap prevents you from knocking it out.

True display of fireworks, Hestia. It's been a pleasure battling with you, and against you, Fawkes 'n' Dazel.

Let's go on with Operation: Hellfire.

Take that Acrobatics, you should do well. Pay him in kind with Fire Blast, then another Fire Blast, then Overheat. Settle for a Victory Dance if you knock Fawkes out.

Pushing through his pain, Fawkes dived at Hestia, ripping a wound in her shoulder and swiftly tucking into a neat roll to avoid retaliation. Banking sharply, he flew at Hestia’s tail, savagely gripping and tearing with his talons while using his wings to keep Hestia’s snapping jaws at bay. Fawkes was forced to let go eventually when Hestia spat a few embers at him. He flew back to a safe distance, pleased to note that Hestia’s once-immaculately groomed pelt was growing ever more ragged and bloodied. Glaring back, Hestia retrieved the Oran Berry she had stashed somewhere on her body in the beginning of the battle and neatly tucked into it, re-energizing herself slightly.

Fawkes’ satisfaction swiftly evaporated when he saw the familiar ball of fire grow between Hestia’s jaws. He gulped, not anticipating being roasted alive again. On the other hand, Hestia’s sadistic grin suggested she was very much looking forward to the roasting. The sphere barreled forward towards Fawkes, who tried to flit off to the side, but an extending arm of fire caught him anyway. Swallowed by the blaze, Fawkes momentarily forgot to flap his wings as a blinding pain overtook his entire nervous system. With a small thump he landed on the ground, where he lay, stunned, for a moment before leaping up and frantically flapping his wings to put out the flames dancing merrily on his feathers.

When the fires were put out, Fawkes slumped against the asphalt, panting heavily. Black spots were swimming across his vision and a terrible enervation was spreading through his body, but he was still conscious, and that meant he could still fight. Channeling all his pain and turning it into anger, Fawkes dived at Hestia, tearing into her with his beak and bearing her to the ground with the full weight of his body. The two Pokemon skidded several feet back, Fawkes on top, buffeting Hestia with his wings and slashing her with his beak. Though unfocused, Fawkes’ blows were heavy with rage, and Hestia shrieked in pain.

With a red mist clouding his vision, Fawkes failed to realize that Hestia was charging yet another Fire Blast. She fired this one at point-blank range, engulfing Fawkes in the most intense blaze yet. White-hot fire consumed his feathers and seared his exposed skin, causing it to blacken and flake away. Mercifully, Fawkes had already been teetering on the brink of unconsciousness, and the initial burst of agony was more than enough to push him over. Long before the flames died away, the poor Fletchling collapsed on the ground, comatose.

Dazel cringed slightly before recalling his rental Pokemon, finding that Fawkes resembled a miniature, severely overcooked chicken. Oh, well, Pokemon were sturdier than they appeared, and besides, the Pokemon Centre would fix that right up. And since it technically wasn’t his Pokemon, he wouldn’t have to pay the medical bills (which weren’t as hefty as one would expect, but hey, it’s still money). Meanwhile, I liek Squirtles congratulated Hestia on a battle well fought, affectionately patting her head while being careful to avoid any scratches Fawkes had left on her. Though she was thrilled at the victory, Hestia wasn’t exactly in the best shape either, so she was recalled as well after a short victory dance.

The referee doled out the prizes with a shrug and a wistful sigh, simultaneously relieved and disappointed at the lack of destruction that took place in the battle. That meant less paperwork that had to be done to fend off angry Kalosian officials, but destruction. Maybe one of her other battles would fare better. With a final farewell the referee waddled over to the other two battles she was presiding over, crossing her ninjatoes for some widespread annihilation.

The battle is over and I liek Squirtles is the winner. I liek Squirtles gets $10, Dazel gets $5 and a free Fletchling, and I get $10. Good game, everyone! Good luck to I liek Squirtles in the next tournament round, and better luck next time to Dazel (perhaps we’ll see you again in the late brackets!).
