Oh no your poor exoskeleton ;; I MEAN, YOU INCOMPETENT EXCUSE FOR A BUTTERFLY, HOW COULD YOU LET THE SLEEPWALKING OF SUCH A SIMPLETON BREACH YOUR DEFENSES

THERE SHALL BE NO MORE OF THIS SHAMEFUL DEFENSE-BREACHING. Give me a Light Screen to keep your poor wings safe from those Moonblasts :c Aphrodite's likely to wake up this action, so sooner rather than later is better! It'll take some effort to keep up, yes, but even one weakened Moonblast will make you break even. If you can, maybe nibble on your berry or something while you're putting up your Light Screen; it's a fat chance but idk even if you can get like 1% of juice out of it that would be nice. (Also, even if you don't get anything out of it, it'll be cute.) Otherwise just drop it, that's fine.

Then, if Aphrodite's somehow still asleep, Dream Eater for energy. If she's awake, which is more likely, take advantage of your newly-lightened load (if you haven't dropped your berry yet for some reason, do it now) to pummel her with Acrobatics.

Light Screen (nibble/drop berry) ~ Dream Eater (energy) / Acrobatics (drop berry) ~ Dream Eater (energy) / Acrobatics (drop berry)

Arena: Centrico Plaza

Centrico Plaza is the crown jewel resting in the core of Lumiose City. Just the Prism Tower, standing at the very center of it, is already one of the most widely recognized landmarks of the entire region; and even the rest of the location isn't too shabby, with verdant gardens, beautifully patterned cobblestone pathes, the sound of the river running underneath the floor, and a surrounding circle of mid-height Kalosian houses, the splendorous local arquitecture adorning the plaza as a foil. Many businesses have come into being at the ground floors of the area, but today, the world-famous roundway of egg hatching is all Asber's, with barriers sealing off all of the many roads leading into the city's very own hub -- and of course, curious crowds gathering at the edges to watch the competition.

For this round of the tournament, each player has been loaned a fresh Pokémon from Kalos. Battles in this round will not last longer than five rounds; if neither Pokémon has fainted by the end of the fifth round, the winning trainer will be the one with the greatest sum of health and energy remaining on their Pokémon.

Upon hearing his trainer’s commands, Vermiculate Monsoon tilted his head in confusion. His poor, breached exoskeleton? His little feet scrabbled at his front, but his carapace seemed perfectly fine. He twisted his head around awkwardly to look at his back. Nope, still good. With a perplexed grumble he abandoned the effort.

There was still one more pressing issue to solve, though. Vermiculate Monsoon looked forlornly at his Oran Berry, every cell in his body yearning to chow down on it, but he knew that if he gave in and stuffed his face he wouldn’t be able to erect a Light Screen in time. Carefully he fluttered down to the pavement a few feet away and gently placed the berry on the ground. With a painful swallow and a resolute promise not to look back, Vermiculate Monsoon flew back towards his opponent. He thought he heard his beloved berry crying out for him to return, but he could not waver; he had a battle to fight. It was a hard comfort. Forcing his attention away from his Oran Berry and towards the task at hand, Vermiculate Monsoon once again concentrated energy in his wingtips. He twirled on the spot, but this time the barrier that cascaded from the resulting circle was a pale translucent gold.

Vermiculate Monsoon’s barrier came not a moment too soon, as Aphrodite lifted her head, her eyes still closed, and gave a drawn-out, hellish shriek. People screamed in discomfort as their eardrums were all but blown out and the glass windows of storefronts were shattered. Vermiculate Monsoon cringed at the onslaught of noise, but he was better off than anyone else, as his Light Screen filtered out a good chunk of the sound. Abruptly, Aphrodite’s screaming stopped and her head flopped back down onto her paws. She still murmured, though, and her eyelids flickered; it would be a matter of seconds before she woke up.

Technically she was still asleep, so Vermiculate Monsoon acted quickly. He stole into Aphrodite’s mind, finding that her dream had deteriorated horrifically since the last time he peeked in. Aphrodite was now fighting hordes of dragons the size of skyscrapers, one of which was closing in despite valiant attempts to fend it off. The dragon raised a foot to step on Aphrodite, just before Vermiculate Monsoon tore a swathe of dreamspace from under Aphrodite’s paws. With a startled yelp she fell – and the sudden drop jerked her awake, panting with fear.

Aphrodite soon managed to gather her wits and shake off the last shreds of sleep. She tilted her muzzle skyward and, in the growing darkness of twilight, felt moonlight wash over her fur and cloak her body in a soft glow. She opened her mouth and concentrated the glow between her fangs, creating a brilliant ball of light full of the moon’s punishing power. It shot forth and, despite part of it uselessly splashing against Vermiculate Monsoon’s trusty barrier, enveloped him in light that seared his corneas and his exoskeleton. It faded away soon enough, but Vermiculate Monsoon still groaned in discomfort.

The solution, of course, was to knock Aphrodite down a few notches as well. Vermiculate Monsoon gave his wings a few hard flaps as a brief warm-up, then rushed at his opponent, viciously pummeling her with wings and feet. Aphrodite squealed and leapt backwards, but Vermiculate Monsoon was relentless. He swooped after her, still flailing wildly, swiveling here and looping a loop there to dodge Aphrodite’s paws as she tried to fend him off. Poor Aphrodite was aching and smarting everywhere when Vermiculate Monsoon finally backed off, panting with exertion but exuberant.

In retaliation, Aphrodite once again drew upon the power of the moon to punish her opponent. By now the sphere of pinkish brilliance was quite familiar to Vermiculate Monsoon, and he gave a squeak of dread as he saw the attack forming. When Aphrodite shot it towards him, he tried to dodge to one side, but it still managed to clip one of his large wings, setting his nerves alight with pain. Vermiculate Monsoon cried out forlornly and landed for a small breather, just as his Safeguard sputtered out, leaving him feeling more vulnerable than ever. His eyes drifted towards his Oran Berry, still lying untouched on the ground a few feet away. The snack would really be appreciated right about now…

Last round, guys! Make it count!

You're so close, VM! Let us make what is hopefully our final round together (sniff) a Veritable Masterpiece! We've just got to keep that advantage!

I know this is so annoying, but with things so close I need one last Safeguard. Then Misty Terrain's going to wear off, so let's keep Aphrodite on her toes with the threat of another Sleep Powder - if she Protects, Magic Coats, or anything else that would render your attack ineffective, go eat that berry you've been eyeing. If she's underground, sprinkle your sleepy spores down her hole. If she has a Substitute or clones, Bug Buzz instead, spreading the sound around to reach all her clones if they exist. Finally, just give it all you've got with Acrobatics; eat your berry if you can't use it or reach her for some reason (don't attack clones or subs), and if you've already eaten your berry, just Chill and pat yourself on the whatever you can reach for a job well-done! :3

Safeguard ~ Sleep Powder / Bug Buzz / eat berry ~ Acrobatics / eat berry / Chill

Okay, we're as good as toast. Probably. Maybe.

Okay, we should first put up a Substitute but as you are doing so, put your berry down. Maybe bury it or something. You won't need it. Next up.....you see that berry on the other side, VM's berry lying sad on the floor, we're gonna Covet that berry! You're gonna be hit by that Bug Buzz, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make. The Sub should still be viable since pure sound can't break a Substitute, can it? I mean it can go around it and through it, but actually break it?? ...Hopefully our Sub can hold up either way. But yes after that, find a nice secluded place and Chill, and if you can eat your newly found berry in the process, then do so, but if you can't, just Chill Normally.

Substitute (10%, put down berry) ~ Covet ~ Chill (eat Coveted berry)/Chill (Normal)

Though Vermiculate Monsoon knew that the scintillating fairy dust would protect him from status, the mist was starting to fade away, so he decided to take matter into his own hands. With another twirl, he created a familiar greenish shroud around himself. Though flimsy and temporary, Vermiculate Monsoon knew it would be enough to protect him for the rest of the match.

Meanwhile, Aphrodite was also working on a construct to defend herself. She gathered some of the thinning fairy mist into a dense ball, then breathed into it, the exhalation carrying a portion of her life force. The sphere of mist responded dramatically, recognizing the essence of the life force and changing to adopt its properties. For a few moments it twisted and stretched and compressed, and when it settled it was the approximate shape of a Sylveon. The decoy drifted over to its creator’s side and turned glowing blue eyes on Vermiculate Monsoon, the primary threat in the vicinity.

Vermiculate Monsoon was unimpressed. No Substitute, no matter how swift or well-constructed, could protect its master from moves that targeted a sense they didn’t even have. With a grin Vermiculate Monsoon began to rub his wings together rapidly, producing a hellish, high-pitched grating noise that assaulted the eardrums of all nearby. Pedestrians screamed and fled for the hills, some of them leaving behind their confused-looking Loudred and Voltorb. Aphrodite’s Substitute was also unaffected, lacking the apparatus to detect the dangerous noise. It stood there passively as Aphrodite cringed and swiveled her ears backwards, doing her best to block out the sound. While her natural type affinities and fortified mental defenses mitigated the discomfort, it was still really annoying.

At last Vermiculate Monsoon fell quiet, and Aphrodite straightened up, her eyes fixed on the Oran Berry lying a few feet away from her opponent. Vermiculate Monsoon realized what Aphrodite was doing a split second too late; though both Pokemon dived desperately for the prized morsel, Aphrodite got there first, bringing a paw down hard on the berry to claim it for herself. A bit too hard, evidently, because she smashed it against the pavement, spraying juices everywhere. Oops. Vermiculate Monsoon gasped in outrage, but Aphrodite shrugged and scooped up the remains, stashing it somewhere on her body for later.

Vermiculate Monsoon longed to beat Aphrodite to a pulp – no pun intended – for squashing and stealing his beloved berry, but he knew that her Substitute would thwart any attempts at violence. Seething, he crossed his arms grumpily and drifted down to the ground so he could lie down and take a break. Perhaps a quick nap would improve his spirits. On the other hand, Aphrodite’s spirits were already quite high, as pilfering Vermiculate Monsoon’s prized berry from under his nose certainly made her feel quite smug. Still, she was never one to turn her nose up at a catnap, so she settled down on the pavement and curled up in a contented ball.

And so, with both Pokemon resting, the tournament battle drew to a calm and rather anticlimactic close.

Terrain notes
Nothing to note.

Final notes
Nothing to note.

Though both Pokemon were in relatively good shape, Vermiculate Monsoon was healthier and more energetic than his opponent, so he and his trainer were declared the winners at the end of the allotted time. Vermiculate Monsoon gave a squeaky whoop of delight, certain now that he’d impressed his trainer, while Eifie stopped nervously demolishing her nails with her teeth upon hearing the news and gave a garbled noise of relief and joy. Eifie shook hands with Flareth, exchanging an obligatory “good game”. Then the referee shoved the cheques for prizes into the trainers’ hands and hastily called upon a League-owned Abra to Teleport them back to Asber, eager to avoid the fast-approaching Kalosian authorities. Of course someone had to destroy the Prism Tower and bring the wrath of yet another region’s government upon their heads. Of course.

The battle is over and Eifie is the winner. Eifie gets $10, Flareth gets $5 and a free Eevee, and I get $10. Good game, everyone! Good luck to Eifie in the next tournament round, and better luck next time to Flareth (perhaps we’ll see you again in the late brackets!).
