Kay, everyone is saying Pikachu's male. It's tail is half evidence, people in the Anime call it a he (and yes, I've heard it!) occasionally, it was embrassed in the maid outfit, and the voice doesn't really matter... So, it's female! Oh wait, it's not female. Is it? No, no, definately male. Male, male, male... yep, it's male!

I don't know if anyone has said this, but apparently if you translate one of the scenes after the seizure scene in porygon electtical warrior, you hear ash say to Nurse Joy: "Joy-San! Will please watch over my pikachu?" Joy replies "Yes! We will watch over him" so pikachu was confirmed as a boy in the first generation. No need to look at the tail, or anything else. Mind you, I did read this on Bulbapedia, so I could be wrong.
