I'll send out... *thinks hard* Esther?

Wait, he's the only one I can use? ._. Whatever.

Okay, the only weakness that you have to this Growlithe is Poison, and I believe the only poison-typed move it can use is Toxic.
Set up a Safeguard, unless the Growlithe is faster and poisons you. If that criteria is met, Toxic it right back.
You can then proceed to use Swords Dance, and test it out with a Slam so we can at least get neutral damage.

Safeguard / Toxic ~ Swords Dance ~ Slam

A boat
A normal, cruise-ship-sized rowboat that is in the middle of the ocean. Oh, yeah, and it's about 50 miles away from Antarctica.

Pre-Round Stuffs
The Southern Ocean, surrounding the earth's most desolate continent, today has its peaceful serenity disturbed by a rather large boat. While this typically wouldn't be very notable in itself, this boat just so happens to have on deck two trainers and a referee, who are preparing for what will hopefully be an exciting battle. Cypher pulls out the only ball he has brought with him, and from it springs forth a feisty-looking snivy with a magmarizer. His oponnent, Mawile, selects a ball as well, releasing a growlithe with a fire stone.

ROUND 1 START!
Cypher:
O
snivy
Esther (♂)
Ability: Overgrow, Flash Fire

Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
Status:“Oh great. A Fire-type.”

Mawile:

Becquerel (♂)
Ability: Flash Fire
Item: Fire Stone
Health: 100%
Energy: 100%
Status: “Cold :[ ” Commands: Thief (discard Magmarizer) ~ Heat Wave ~ Heat Wave

Eyeing his opponent carefully, Esther was glad to be holding on to a magmarizer. He definitely wouldn't want to be burned; the growlithe could still poison him, however. Time to set up some defenses. The snivy suddenly gained a serious look on its face, concentrating deeply on his own vitality, a protective aura embracing him. Satisfied, Esther looked up again, just in time to see Becquerel charging at him. Dashing forward, the growlithe suddenly reared back and then leapt onto his foe with impeccable lightness. Though Esther quickly recovered from the slight pain, the shock of the attack left him powerless as Becquerel grabbed his magmarizer and takes off with it. Not seeing the point in being granted an ability he already possesses, the dog set it down, allowing the ref to confiscate it- at least temporarily.

Now much less composed, the serpent held out its puny appendages and began to spin wildly, its leaf-like tail cutting the wind with an angry whoosh. Though somewhat amused by the sight of Esther's dance, Becquerel decided it was time to get serious. His lungs quickly gaining heat, the growlithe scathed his opponent with a burning wind. The snivy whimpered in pain, flailing in an attempt to escape the fiery doom. Oh, how Esther wished he still had that magmarizer!

Having had enough of Bec's aggression, the snivy swung back its tail and slammed his opponent with it, tossing him aside. That'll teach him, thought Esther. Becquerel growled angrily as he got up on his feet again. That Heat Wave had looked like it hurt plenty. Might as well... he summoned all the heat he could and once more released it at the almost-pitiful creature before him, who squealed in his all too familiar torment.
ROUND 1 END!

Cypher:
O
snivy
Esther (♂)
Ability: Overgrow
Health: 58%
Energy: 84%
Status: “IT BURNS D:” +2 attack

Mawile:
O
growlithe
Becquerel (♂)
Ability: Flash Fire
Item: Fire Stone
Health: 89%
Energy: 83%
Status: “I'm a firestarter~”

Ref notes:

 • Esther no longer has a magmarizer, or Flash Fire (it will be returned to Cypher after the battle has ended)
 • Esther's safeguard lasts 3 more actions (alternatively, one round)
 • Cypher: I do believe poison as a status ailment does a set amount of damage, even to Grass-types
 • Mawile commands next

Use Heat Wave three times, but if he Protects, do nothing. If you're Tormented, use Flamethrower instead of the second Heat Wave.

Heat Wave/nothing ~ Heat Wave/nothing/Flamethrower ~ Heat Wave/nothing

0.0 Screw this no damage cap. Remind me to never do something like this again.

I seriously believe I'm screwed here. So let's try this.

The referee's sharp whistle signals the beginning of another round- and for Esther that means a chance to get his revenge. Channeling his energy, the snivy causes the leaf on his tail to grow and sharpen, glinting in the sunlight. Then, he slashes at the growlithe before him, the blade cutting into Becquerel's flesh. Bec yelps in pain; his foe seems to actually be fighting back now. He knows just what to do. A burning heat rises in his lungs and he exhales, the invisible flame landing on the serpent hard.

Esther resists the urge to scream in exasperation and suffering, instead raising up a protective shield. Becquerel is preparing another attack, when the serpent's move forces him to reconsider. No point in launching an attack that would miss anyway. Instead, he simply stands in place and resists the urge to take a nap.

Though disappointed at the growlithe's refusal to waste an attack, Esther can feel this next move is going to be good. As he prepares to summon a raging storm of leaves, however, he notices the lack of vegetation out in the middle of the coldest waters on earth. Sighing, he begins to create them himself, using his own elemental energy. He then launches them forwards with a great gust of wind. Though the tempest swallows his opponent momentarily, Esther is saddened to see his creation turned to ashes after a few seconds. At least that horrible growlithe is looking less smug now. Bec rises and looks at his enemy disbelievingly. C'mon. You can do this. You're dominating. Another Heat Wave ought to send the right message to the snivy. Both physical and emotional flame floods Becquerel's chest cavity, and he lets the cascade of red-hot pain hit his foe. The poor pokémon moans in shock and suffering; all Esther can feel is how much the heat is hurting his entire body and how exhausted he is. The Safeguard that had aided him previously is gone, all his pretty, sharp leaves are gone and he is certain this horrible growlithe will be the end of him. But then... the snivy turns an odd shade of green, pure Grass energy flowing through his core. Suddenly, Esther doesn't quite feel so bad- that feeling of wanting to just collapse isn't gone yet, but he's sure he can at least do some damage.

 • Esther is no longer protected by Safeguard
 • Esther's Overgrow is now active
 • Cypher commands next
 • This reffing, incidentally, was originally (in a more poetic form) written during a very long car ride

Ugh.

Esther, there's no chance of winning unless we get a critical, methinks.

Don't worry, after the battle I'll get you something specia- HOW THE HELL DO WE GET OFF THIS BOAT DX

Esther, now somewhat refreshed by the energy flowing through him, jumped at his opponent, swinging his tail forward. The leaf cut its way through the air and made contact, causing Becquerel to yelp in pain as it gashed his flesh. The growlithe could feel Esther's increased strength. No matter though; Bec had a feeling his next move would finish the snivy. His body flared up in flames, the glorious heat bringing forth a grin; this was it. Becquerel charged at his foe, the fire engulfing both him and Esther. The snivy collapsed, groaning from pain, frustration and pure hatred for his tormentor. Becquerel's own pain, however, was drowned out by the sheer mirth induced by his victory.

BATTLE END!
The referee gave one final trill to signify the end of this battle. A faint glow washed over Esther as Cypher withdrew him into his ball. Mawile did the same, while SomeGuy returned the magmarizer to Cypher. A few hours later, the ship arrived at the bay of Ushuaia, off the Argentine coast. SomeGuy congratulated both participants on their performance and wished them good luck in getting back home. Cypher hurried to the nearest PokéCenter and later purchased some assorted berries for his dismayed snivy. Mawile basked in his win for another half hour or so before he realized the League only paid for a one-way trip.

Prizes, etc.
Let's see here... Mawile wins and gets $8, Cypher loses and gets $3, and I, the ref, get $5. Becquerel gets two experience points, and Esther gets one. Well, uh, good game, you two. I suppose the circumstances could've been better but both of you showed fighting spirit.
