(thanks for agreeing to ref this, Squorn!)

I'll send out Adelle! Again.

Start out with a Yawn. If Yawn wouldn't reach or affect Adri for some reason, make a Substitute instead. Hit her with two Body Slams after that. If there's anything stopping you from using or reaching her with Body Slam (barring Substitute), or if she's asleep (unless she does have a Substitute), use Growth. Because apparently you can learn Growth. If you happen to be asleep yourself, use Sleep Talk. Snore is boring.

Alright, Adri, first we're going to have you Safeguard against that Yawn. That should keep Adelle from trying to put you to sleep for a couple of actions next round, too. Then, focus and dash at Adelle with the best Flare Blitz you can manage to knock out that ridiculous Substitute. It'll hurt, but we desperately need Substitute out of the picture. If for some reason Flare Blitz misses, try to get far enough away from Adelle that she'll be forced to grow, and then use Sunny Day. Otherwise, hit Adelle with a Confuse Ray!

Pre-round Notes
In the middle of a pleasant, grassy field, everything is normal, with the exception of the somewhat out-of-place box. Nothing seems amiss, everything is calm and peaceful.

Then, suddenly, three humans and a Reuniclus appear.

No flash, no sparkle, no song and dance, simply empty space one second and humans (and Reuniclus) the next. The referee recalls the Pokémon, and quickly paces over to the trees, putting herself firmly in the shadow; the other two run excitedly to the ends of the field, turning to face one another and each throwing a Pokéball. A Vulpix emerges from one, coming out near the pond, whimpering, and leaping away; an Eevee emerges from the other, beginning to lick its coat clean. The referee, safe from the sunlight, calls for the battle to begin, sitting on a conveniently shaped tree.

Round 1 Begin!

Adri is first to move, growling at her opponent fiercely and then going silent. Concentrating, she channels some of her energy into the air around her: a shimmering green glow quickly materializes into a translucent green hemisphere. Adelle observes this with interest, then begins a protective technique of her own. Scrabbling frantically, she manages to dig up a sizeable clod of dirt; suddenly, her eyes take on a bright white glow, energy beginning to pour from her into the dirt. A white glow enveloping the pile of soil, it slowly shifts and changes shape, morphing into a near-perfect Eevee sculpture. Wiggling its ears, it looks around curiously, suddenly turning its attention on Adri.

And with good reason, too: Adri is preparing to attack. Carefully focussing, she stokes her internal flame to intense temperatures, far higher than she would normally use. With an unsettling whoosh, the air around her autoignites, wreathing her body in flames. She leaps up and, leaving a trail of burning grass behind her, tears towards Adelle; she tries to aim for the original Eevee, but the clone intercepts her. She tackles the dirt-clone hard, flames licking at it painfully; it's reduced to ash within seconds, and Adri staggers away, looking dazed, as the flames die away around her: the attack's taken a lot out of her. Adelle decides to seize on the opportunity: growling, she runs towards her opponent, jumping as high as she can and soaring gracefully through the air. She lands on Adri with a thud, squealing as the Vulpix' still-superheated fur burns her skin.

Throwing Adelle off, Adri staggers away, trying to get her head to stop spinning. When she reaches a reasonable distance - she hopes - she turns to face Adelle again, controlling her breathing as best she can. Breathing in deeply, she then exhales slowly and carefully, a small, blue flame exhaled as she does. It hovers in mid-air, bunching together into a small flame, which wobbles unsteadily through the air towards Adelle. She ignores it, charging towards Adri again; she once again leaps into the air, landing on Adri with a lot less pain, now that the Vulpix' fur has cooled. She quickly gets up and wobbles away, the tiny flame following her, as the round draws to an end.

Adri, yay, you did it!

Okay, now that Adelle is confused, we want to spend some time preparing to deal with her later.

First, carefully approach Adelle and use Role Play. Hopefully she'll mess up, but take damage if you have to to steal Adaptability. If something is keeping you from using Role Play (though that shouldn't happen), use a three-clone Double Team instead. If you didn't successfully use Role Play, try again (unless you can't use it on her for some reason), otherwise, get as far as possible after that and create a few clones with Double Team to make Adelle's job even that much more difficult - again, three should be sufficient. On the third action move even further away and then wait for Adelle to move, and if she leaves you alone, use Sunny Day. If she attacks you, take care of her with Hypnosis (unless something is making it extra-difficult - such as Double Team - or impossible to put her to sleep, or if your accuracy is lowered, in which case continue with Sunny Day). If on any action Adelle has successfully created a Substitute last action, use Spite.

First clear your head a bit to shake off some of that confusion; then let's force Adri to use Spite on her third action by making a Substitute. It'll have to be bigger now that Adaptability's a thing. Finally, hit her with Swift. Sorry, clones!

If on your second or third action you think you can't use an attack without tripping over yourself or being confused or something, take that time to clear your head some more. If you fail to make a Substitute on your second action, use Quick Attack on the third instead. Make Adri think you're going to attack her with it so she'll try to use Hypnosis; really, you're just going to use the attack to dodge it.

Go, Adelle, go! \o/

Round 2 Begin!

As the round begins, Adelle sits down and closes her eyes, concentrating as best she can on her own thoughts and ignoring entirely the little flame, which continues to bob and weave around her. Adri, meanwhile, begins observing her opponent closely; a very slight pink glow begins to show in her eyes as she taps into the Eevee's inherent energy. Her metabolism begins to slow down, though her internal fire begins to burn all the hotter. She shudders very slightly at the increased heat, but quickly becomes used to it, her eyes returning to their usual color.

Then, suddely, she leaps up. She begins running in tight circles at high speed, suddenly speeding up to a bizarre degree, even melting into a motion blur. When she slows down a few seconds later, she's not alone: three identical Vulpix seem to be following her, mirroring her moves exactly. Adelle looks on in puzzlement, and decides to make a duplicate of her own: digging up another little pile of dirt, she again imbunes it with her own energy, sculpting it into an Eevee-shape - much to her dismay, it's significantly less visually accurate than Adri's clones. The Substitute perks up its ears, standing up and walking around, testing out its newfound consciousness.

Seemingly in response to this, Adri looks at Adelle with a piercing glare, her eyes beginning to turn a dark purple color. Then, suddenly, she raises her head to the sky and lets out a howl, the clones mimicking her movements. The howl echoes unsettlingly around the arena, which given its open nature strikes everyone present as somewhat odd; it seems to hit Adelle worst, though, since she flattens her ears to her head, screws her eyes closed and whimpers until Adri stops. Cautiously opening one eye, she sees that she's stopped, and quickly returns to her normal, bubbly state; suddenly opening her mouth, she spits out many white, glowing stars of energy, which hurtle towards one of the Vulpix and strike it, exploding on impact. Adri whimpers, her clones quickly flickering and vanishing.

Awesome, now you're safe for a little while \o/ Use Skull Bash first, or go for Swift if you could hit Adri with that but not Skull Bash (e.g. in the case of Double Team). On your next action, make sure to move after her; if Sunny Day is in effect then, use Rain Dance. Otherwise use Natural Gift. If you can use Natural Gift again on your next action, do so; use Body Slam if you can't.

Once your Substitute's destroyed, be on your guard and make sure to look away from Adri if she tries to use Hypnosis (or Confuse Ray, if that happens for some reason) and then use Natural Gift if you can. If you can't, just clear your head some more. If on any action you think you'd be too confused to carry out an attack, or you have no way of hitting her (barring Substitute), clear your head instead. If you get to clear your head at least once, confusion will be gone by the end of this round!

Alright, Adri, quickly put up a barrier with Reflect to soften the impact from Adelle's physical moves. That should make Skull Bash preferable to Swift, so don't bother getting farther away (but obviously still try to dodge it if you can). Use Flamethrower next to put that annoying copyvee on its last legs, then finish it off with a Flame Charge. You don't really need the speed boost, but without the sun to power-up your Fire-type moves, it's the best move for the job. If the Substitute is gone after your second action, or if Flamethrower misses, use Sunny Day instead, and we'll deal with Adelle potentially raining on your parade later.

Round 3 Begin!
Adri began by dropping her safeguard; it was tiring her out a bit. She however replaced that with a screen of a different color. This time, it was gold. The golden curtain shimmered as light passed through it. Adelle admired the effect for just a moment before lowering her head. After making sure she was guarded at her weakest points, she darted forward, piercing the curtain with some difficulty before eventually hitting her target.

Adri then inhaled air for quite some time. Sensing danger, Adelle's substitute flew towards Adri just as she exhaled. Flames, which looked even more dazzling due to the screen, danced from Adri's mouth, eventually engulfing the substitute. They quickly died down. However, the flames lasted enough for the substitute to be badly burned. Adelle was quite distressed. In revenge, she wagged her tail in a rhythmic motion. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. Her timing was absolutely perfect, causing a beam of energy to come spiraling forth. The white beam, passed through the curtain with considerable difficulty, effectively slowing down just enough to halve the force of impact.

Adri was intent on breaking her opponent's substitute. Darn it for being so resilient. Wanting to deal with the substitute as quickly as possible, she covered herself in flames and began darting forward. As expected, the substitute headed straight into the attack, willingly sacrificing itself. It crumbled to dust as soon as it was hit, and Adri couldn't help smiling. Adelle was really getting frustrated at this point. Once again, she swished her tail back and forth and sent a single beam of light towards her opponent.

Thank you for picking this up, Skylark!

Much as I appreciate the extra damage, shouldn't Adri only have taken half the damage from the Natural Gifts, since Natural Gift is apparently a physical attack? (I was surprised, too.)

Ow ow ow. Well, at least it turned out the Natural Gifts did less damage to you than we thought, Adri! Okay, well, what we want to try and do now is damage Adelle, but you're starting to get weak, so we have to be careful.

First of all, use Overheat. That has a 10% miss chance, but that's not much, so hopefully that doesn't happen. If it does um cry. :c It'll drop your special attack but that's okay you'll still be tough. Also you have Reflect yay, yay! So we don't have to worry quite as much about you dying. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's impossible for Adelle to knock you out this round unless a critical hit happens. Which is super-unlikely. So you can do this! Next action, also Overheat. And then Overheat again. Because. Adelle needs to stop being here. If on any action Adelle Yawns, Safeguard, but if you already have a Safeguard up, continue with Overheat instead. If Adelle successfully Protects or Detects on any action (pretend they're exactly the same), Safeguard unless you already have a Safeguard up, in which case you may as well set up Sunny Day instead. Either that will help you or Adelle will have to waste an action dancing for rain, so it's fine either way. If it's the final action and you've successfully used Overheat twice, and at least one of them got a critical and/or Adelle has used Double-Edge at least once, Overheat even if Adelle Yawns. Be on guard for Adelle pretending to Yawn, because she's sneaky like that. Also if Adelle uses Rest on the first action, use Safeguard on the final action.

Adelle, let's prove vim wrong with Bide! Adri will be waiting for you to move first because of Yawn, so try to get as close to her as you possibly can before you start storing energy. Bide's increased priority, so hopefully you'll be able to get really close and start Biding before that first Overheat hits you. And hopefully that close proximity will help make extra-sure that none of the Overheats miss! Make sure you're Biding by the time the first Overheat happens; don't waste too much time getting closer.

If by the third action you've been hit by both Overheats, release Bide right away. If you've been hit by only one (or even none :c), let Adri attack before you do. You're slower (and she'd probably be aware that you can't Yawn in your current state, anyway), and I'm sure you can spare the extra energy that it'd take to wait, so it should be fine! The damage cap should protect you from actually fainting from energy loss, anyway, although unless I've missed something you should be getting hit by no more than two Overheats before attacking.

Round 4 Begin!
The battlers eyed one another at the beginning of the round. The tension in the air was very noticeable at this point. Without hesitation, Adelle braced herself for her opponent's attacks. Steadily, she planted her feet on the ground. A red outline started to appear around her, but her opponent couldn't make heads or tails of what she was doing. Adri was pretty sure her opponent wasn't going to yawn anytime soon. After all, yawning had nothing to do with a faint red aura, so she started warming up her internal flame sac. Inside her body, the flames got hotter and hotter. Her body temperature rose. It was slow at first, but the rate at which her temperature was rising quickened soon after. After a few moments, even Adri was having difficulty with the flames inside her. She was starting to sweat buckets. However, she decided she could take a little more. She allowed the fire in her body to grow even hotter, and just as she was about to pass out from the heat, she opened her mouth. Flames as bright as stars spouted forth and danced their way towards Adelle. Adelle whimpered as she was engulfed by the flames. Her fur was getting singed.

However, she knew that she had to endure the attack. She kept her feet planted firmly on the ground, and tried not to show too much pain in her face. The flames disappeared soon after, and Adri puzzled over what her opponent was doing. Had she just given up? Might as well hit her with my best shot. Fire awaaaaay. Adri felt drained from her previous attack. She felt as if she wouldn't be able to summon any more flames, but she tried anyway. Again, flames started collecting in her body. She would never get used to this feeling. It was both thrilling and painful. She loved the heat that fire attacks brought, but they were also painful to use. She opened her mouth wide and sent out white flames once more. The flames were somewhat smaller but not by a great deal. Whoosh.

Adelle could feel the flames even before they made contact with her body. They singed her all over, and she was feeling terrible by this point, but she knew what had to be done. Her outline had grown by this time. It was now a dark red, and she could feel the energy that was collected in her aura. "Now," she decided. With all her might, she charged straight into her opponent, who didn't even register that she was being attacked until the last moment. The strength of the attack had knocked out Adri.

Adelle was completely drained. That attack had been incredibly strong. She was ready to collapse from exhaustion at this point, and her trainer lovingly and proudly picked her up in her arms. Congratulations were in order. The referee gave both trainers some money. After a brief exchange, league-owned Xatu came along to pick up the trainers.
