Arena: Doctor Kaminko's Experimental Stadium, Arena #17

Any claims that Doctor Kaminko does not test his Pokémon-related inventions before revealing them to the public (a public that is obviously too simple to appreciate their sheer genius) are, of course, entirely false. In fact, the Doctor has a dedicated space beneath his secret laboratory for just this purpose—his experimental stadium. At first glance it appears to be a fairly plain arena, with the standard clay floor, small pool for Water-types and a weather generator that will respond to any weather-inducing commands. A few button presses and switch flips, however, and the Doctor can produce anything from a plethora of his newest battle-based creations to make things more... interesting. Kaminko regularly invites trainers down to his facility to help him test his new experiments, assuring them that of course their Pokémon will be perfectly safe and that of course there will be ample compensation for their time. Most of the Orrean trainers know better than to take his claims at face value, but there's no reason for a few gullible eager outsiders not to trust him, right? Besides! Shiny new toys! Who could possibly resist?

Today the trainers will be battling in arena configuration seventeen of sixty-three. Number seventeen is intended to test Kaminko's new Bewildering Ballistic Baldorfish™. The client who requested the Baldorfish wanted some traps for his Water-type gym in Germany, something mine-like that would detonate at regular intervals and provide an extra hazard that his challengers would have to work around. But that, Dr. Kaminko decided, was silly. What's the point of mines that explode at regular intervals? Regular intervals are predictable and a great deal less likely to be hazardous to anyone. He made sure to fix that part, yes sir.

Twenty-five Bewildering Ballistic Baldorfish™, ominous, spiked spheres that resemble tailless Qwilfish in size and coloration, are scattered around the otherwise unremarkable arena. Ten are half-buried in the clay floor, ten are hovering about 5 ft/1.5 m off of the ground and five float in the small central pool. Most, aside from those in the pool, are spaced about 8-10 ft/2.4-3 meters apart, and theoretically are easy enough to step around if moving at a reasonable pace. At the beginning of every action there is a 50% chance that a random Baldorfish anywhere on the field will explode (the ref can decide on the Baldorfish locations beforehand and randomize from there, or just wing it and decide whether it's near a battler or not). Exploding Baldorfish immediately cause 5% typeless damage to any battler in the blast radius, which is usually 5 ft/1.5 m in diameter (but see below) and then disintegrate, leaving no notable shrapnel or other remains behind. The client asked that the Baldorfish simply explode, but Kaminko has taken it upon himself to doll them up with even more interesting and unpredictable effects as noted in the list below. All effects are in addition to the 5% typeless damage, and the effect that happens should be randomized according to the numbers below.

-5 Baldorfish cause the 5% typeless damage and nothing else.
-5 Baldorfish spray a poisonous mist, causing light poisoning to any Pokémon in the blast radius. Being caught in multiple poison explosions will increase the severity of the poisoning by one stage, culminating in toxic poisoning if a Pokémon is hit by all five.
-5 Baldorfish release a wave of water energy when they explode, causing 5% Water-type damage.
-5 Baldorfish have an especially loud explosion that will temporary deafen all Pokémon in the arena; they will remember whatever commands they were given for the remainder of the round and carry them out, but they will be unable to hear the first command given to them for the next round and will perform a random attack from their legal movepools instead (akin to Sleep Talk). They will also be unable to hear sound-based moves until after that randomized move (and so effectively have Soundproof in addition to all other abilities until that time). Multiple deafening blasts in one round do not stack. Pokémon that naturally have Soundproof are immune to this effect, but not the damage if they're within the blast radius.
-3 Baldorfish will cause any Pokémon caught in the blast radius to flinch and lose their next action.
-1 Baldorfish detonates with impressive force and does damage equal in power and type to one use of the move Selfdestruct as used by a Qwilfish. It has a 15 ft/4.6 m blast radius.
-1 Baldorfish detonates with extreme force and does damage equal in power and type to one use of the move Explosion as used by a Qwilfish. It has a 20 ft/6 m blast radius.

Additionally, the Baldorfish are very sensitive to any external stimuli. A Baldorfish hit by an attack with a base power of 50 or more, or by any impact/stimulus the ref considers equally damaging, will explode on the spot and cause its effect immediately on whatever is in the blast radius. Exploding Baldorfish will set off any intact Baldorfish in their range.

Exploded Baldorfish are not replaced, so the battle continues as normal (a.k.a. boring) when all twenty-five have detonated.

Thanks a lot for taking this! Hm... I think I'll lead with Mantis.

Re: Kratos Aurion vs. Espeon (ref: Squornshellous Beta

Alright, going with Pisaster.

Bulk out defenses using cosmic power first, to increase durability against all incoming attacks. Follow by using icy wind to slow them down however, should they defend by using protect, detect or a substitute then use cosmic power again. Finally, finish up with scald to attempt to burn them - if they defend against this with protect, detect or substitute, use gravity.

Cosmic Power ~ Icy Wind/Cosmic Power ~ Scald/Gravity

(And I am hoping that's all correct?)

Re: Kratos Aurion vs. Espeon (ref: Squornshellous Beta

Fake out first off and stop that cosmic power. If the starting distance between you two is too great and you don't think you'd be able to avoid any Baldorfish in your rush over there, though, just render it moot with work up instead. Not too worried about icy wind since you're already slower than it is, so let's take the opportunity to have a little fun. If you're already in close to Pisaster after fake out, or if you used work up but think you can reach it in a reasonable amount of time, go up, grab it and vital throw it into the farthest Baldorfish you think you can hit. If you're too far away to be able to reasonably grab and toss it in one turn then carefully move toward it, and if it's not too much trouble then get in another work up as you move. Moving is first priority, though. Last, if you threw Pisaster on the previous action, hit it again with stone edge. If you haven't thrown it yet, do so with strength (since I don't want to risk vital throw's priority shenanigans messing up the timing). If you haven't thrown it but scald manages to burn you, facade and see if you can't flail it in the direction of a not-too-close Baldorfish.

Fake Out/Work Up ~ Vital Throw/move/move and Work Up ~ Stone Edge/Strength/Facade

(Since you made that handy diagram, SB, were you planning on pointing out approximately where each pokémon is when it ends the round?)

Pre-round Notes
Now most people know better than to trust Doctor Kaminko. Now, fine, more power to them, you'd think. And if an occasional trainer should be fooled, that does not make them stupid; it simply means that the Doctor is having a good day, or the trainer a bad one.

But when a trainer who has already seen the negative effects of his products returns for another round, you have to begin questioning their intelligence.

Nontheless. Even despite the official League reports and investigations into this place, and the fact that one of the trainers has already tried one of the Doctor's 'products', these three are here. The Doctor has proudly introduced them to the 'product' - some kind of land mine? The ref wasn't really listening - and then vacates very quickly, closing the door behind him. A few minutes' testing confirms the referee's suspicions that the door can't be opened, the room can't be damaged and they can't Teleport out; looks like all they can do is what they came to do.

So the trainers take up places that they hope are far enough away from the thingamajigs, the referee calls upon the League Reuniclus to protect her in case she's wrong, and the Pokémon are sent out: a Staryu and a Mienfoo. As the referee eyes a flashing whatjamacallit warily, she signals for the battle to begin.

Round 1 Begin!

Before anyone can make a move, though, one of the strange orbs, one buried in the ground, suddenly lights up with a light from its core; it flashes briefly but the detonates, catching the unfortunate Pisaster within its shockwave. A bizzare strangled grating sound emits from the Staryu as some indication of its pain, but the strange being remains otherwise unaffected.

Seemingly as some kind of response to the explosion, the motionless star begins to emit a combination of low buzzing growls and high-pitched beeps. This apparently has some effect, because the creature takes on a bright white glow, almost as though evolving; its shape remains the same, though, so that's clearly not it. After a few seconds the glow fades away to reveal an apparently unchanged Staryu. Mantis, having been watching this with interest, knows he won't be able to get to it quickly enough for anything useful, so she begins flexing her muscles and thinking positive thoughts; a few seconds of this leave her feeling much better and readier to fight.

Even by now, the referee is beginning to despair as to whether the Staryu will ever actually move. This action doesn't seem like it's going to be that time, unfortunately: the red gem at Pisaster's core flashes brightly for a few seconds, and then a cold breeze sweeps in at Mantis from nowhere; it gets colder and colder and Mantis shivers violently, and all of a sudden the wind dies away. Mantis immediately leaps up, then winces: that cold wind has stiffened her joints up significantly. Still, she can at least try, and so she runs carefully towards Pisaster, steering clear of the strange spheres. As she runs she does her best to think positive thoughts and tries to loosen up her joints somewhat; by the time she dodges the last Baldorfish she at least feels significantly more ready to fight.

The Staryu finally moves, much to the astonishment of the referee. It rotates slowly on the spot to 'face' Mantis, then flashes a short and incomprehensible message at her. Then, suddenly, a jet of water shoots out of the core straight at Mantis. She screams; the water is at a literally boiling temperature, clouds of steam rising from her. The jet ceases as abruptly as it started, leaving a soaking wet and boiling hot Mantis growling at her opponent. Suddenly she snaps: she grabs onto the immobile form and, displaying incredible strength for a creature of her size, hurls the heavier-than-herself Staryu like a frisbee, straight through the air. It curves round and slams into a Baldorfish, which exploded in response; not only does a blast wave emerge, but a bizzare purple cloud of poison gas, which lingers for long enough for some of it to be absorbed into the Staryu's body and taint its internal water supply. The end of the round leaves the motionless Pisaster being glared at by Mantis.

Scald - 10% damage, 6% energy (accuracy roll 65, needed 100 to miss)
Strength - 6% energy (accuracy roll 83, needed 100 to miss)

Notes
- I guess I shall! Since it's not important for most battles but is for this one.
- I am having so much fun writing Staryu, you have no idea.
- Figuring out how far a Mienfoo could hurl a Staryu is amazingly difficult.
- Since Strength was used for manhandling as opposed to damage, I had it do no damage.
- Scald did not cause a burn.

Arena Notes
- The battlefield started out like this, these Baldorfish have exploded, and now the battlefield is like this.
- For the record, the red Baldorfish means pure damage, purple means poison mist. The water-damage one would be blue (what that'll look like if it goes off in the pool I don't know), sound-one light grey, flinch-one dark grey, and Selfdestruct and Explosion are normal red but bigger. The Baldorfish with a dark brown ring around them are the ones buried in the ground.
- We still have 23 Baldorfish left. Four are normal damage, four poison, five water damage, five sound, three flinch, one Selfdestruct and one Explosion.

Next Round
- Kratos Aurion attacks
- Espeon attacks
- I ref

:O Wasn't expecting you to keep updating the images like that, maybe just mention things, but if you don't mind doing that then yeah, that's helpful!

Not feeling terribly inspired atm, soo, uh. Try and move further away from the Baldorfish you're kind of uncomfortably close to, just in case, and then use aura sphere, stone edge and swift. If it's really close to a Baldorfish when you attack, feel free to try and hit the Baldorfish as well/knock it into the Baldorfish. If Pisaster protects or otherwise can't reasonably be damaged (continue to attack any substitutes, though) on any given action, calm mind on action 2 or 3 and bulk up on action 1. Loopholes commence, etc..

Aura Sphere/Bulk Up ~ Stone Edge/Calm Mind ~ Swift/Calm Mind

(unrelated: don't feel scared of me because of that one little outburst! :( it wasn't your fault and also was an incredibly childish thing for me to do. I still feel kind of bad about it! I'm not that scary! Most of the time!)

Alright - first you should move underneath one of the floating Baldorfish to attempt to lure Mantis towards you. Then use a combination of gravity and protect to try to cause all of the floating baldorfish to explode simultaneously. Should Mantis not be in range, use water pulse and twister to try to confuse them and knock the Baldorfish around. If gravity is in effect on action three use hydro pump. Otherwise, use cosmic power again.

Round 2 Begin!

Finally, the Staryu makes a significant movement of its own. It moves, completely rigid, across the ground, displaying no propelling motion - not even a waddle. It stops underneath a floating Baldorfish and then, core flashing in an unusual pattern, creates a translucent green dome to protect itself. Then, putting in a significant amount of energy more than it normally would for the move, it switches to another flash-pattern: for a few seconds nothing happens, then all at once everything goes wrong.

As far as Mantis notices, the main effect is that she gets pulled straight down to the ground, landing face-first with a horrible thud. However, there are other effects to follow: all of the floating Baldorfish are similarly pulled down, and each begins a unique pattern of flashing. Suddenly, three of the fish explode in a burst of blue energy, then another explodes to leave a cloud of purple gas; another bursts into a lot of shrapnel, and then the one over Pisaster's head erupts in a massive blast, far larger than each of the others. Thankfully for Pisaster, its protect shield keeps it unharmed. Another explodes even more violently, a huge explosion engulfing four others, which begin flashing as well. Two of these explode quickly in a small, simple explosion, and leave only three remaining, flashing oddly. Suddenly, all at once, the three detonate, an enormous sound issuing forth; the trainers and Mantis clap their hands to their ears in unison, and Pisaster gives off what... is probably a pained sound. The referee, meanwhile, remains unaffected, having had the Reuniclus block out sound as soon as she saw the pattern of lights. The trainers and Mantis are left with horribly ringing ears, while Pisaster can barely take in sound any more; its audio-sensory organs have been overwhelmed. It lets its shield drop.

Mantis struggles to get up, feeling as though her body is suddenly a hundred times heavier. With some difficulty, she begins exercising, stretching and augmenting her muscles; it takes a few minutes, but by the end she can at least stand up without too much difficulty. Having finally made some sense out of the mess of audial input, Pisaster begins another move. It flashes briefly and then an enormous jet of water bursts forth from its core, straight at Mantis, throwing her back - uncomfortably close to a Baldorfish - and slamming her into a wall. The jet ceases as quickly as it began, leaving Mantis to fall to the ground with a thump. She simply lies there for a few minutes, groaning occasionally.

Eventually, though, she rouses herself, struggling to her feet. Then she throws her hands into the air dramatically, and for a few seconds looks very silly as nothing happens; then, all of a sudden, rocks tear themselves out of the ground and hurl themselves at Pisaster, their sharp edges slicing through its brown arms. Then, randomly, one of them hits it in the red, jewelled core, prompting it to make the first actual movement of the battle: it seemingly doubles over, as though it were a person punched in the stomach. It emits a horrible grating squealing beeping noise, trying to regenerate the damaged core; it begins to heal over, albeit slowly.

Finally, Mantis assumes a meditative stance. The black spots on her head begin to glow white and then a flurry of glowing stars burst out, flying straight at the screeching Pisaster; it carves up his exterior body some more, but at least avoids his core, which is still regenerating.

Notes
- That was... violent! And we managed to trigger the Explosionfish, which detonated three others, and the Selfdestructfish, which was the one Pisaster was under. Fortunate that it Protected.
- Also EXPLOSIONS :D
- I tend to think of Gravity as this... "the gravity is getting stronger somewhat gradually"-type thing, so Pisaster had to expend significant extra energy to make a sharm enough impact to trigger the Fish.
- Stone Edge was a critical hit.
- I'm trying not to be :( I know you said it wasn't my fault and all and that you were annoyed about other things but I still can't help being a little nervous around you for fear it'll happen again :(

Begin the round by using Blizzard coughgravitycough - should the enemy defend through usage of protect, detect or substitutes, use barrier. For round 2, if Blizzard is used and Mantis is frozen, chill, otherwise use waterfall in a vague attempt flinch it. For round 3, if waterfall was used, use psychic. In any other event, use cosmic power.

Blizzard/Barrier ~ chill/Waterfall ~ Psychic/Cosmic Power

Actually, the first actions of the round should be randomized a la sleep talk because of the deafening blasts; Squorn didn't specifically note that, but it should be the case unless I'm missing something. If you want to reconsider based on that, I'll wait to give my orders.

Ah, okay. In that case:

If the random attack is a damaging move, use barrier on the next move. Otherwise, use Blizzard. Should Blizzard freeze the opponent, which is unlikely, use Waterfall. Otherwise, chill if below 45% energy at the end of round 2 - if not then use cosmic power.

"Sleep Talk" ~ Blizzard/Barrier ~ chill/Waterfall/Cosmic Power

(It's just the first move which is randomised right?)

Right, just the first move and then back to normal.

So then. Do, uh, whatever on the first action. On the second, move toward Pisaster (and away from that Baldorfish, eep) if you haven't already and use brick break; if you're frozen in place and it's not impossible for you to do so, rock smash the ice to free yourself. If it is impossible to move, chill. Lastly, drain punch and siphon away its energy if you aren't (still) frozen to the spot, rock smash the ice if you are frozen but can move enough to do so, and chill if you can't move. You should also chill until you wake up on the off chance that the random move decides that it wants to be rest.

Round 3 Begin!

Just before anyone can make a move, a Baldorfish just behind Mantis begins flashing before blowing up, a cloud of purple mist emerging and engulfing Mantis. She can't help but breathe it in, and she chokes and retches violently, almost vomiting from the foul substance.

Pisaster's core is slowly healing over, but it's not going to be whole anytime soon. Seemingly subscribing to a sort of 'how would she like it' philosophy, Pisaster's core takes on a dark red glow as it extends its bizarre mind towards Mantis. Its envelops hers, and suddenly Mantis is left with a fairly good idea of what insanity feels like. With the bizarre distraction, she doesn't notice the small portion of her life energy that's being transferred to Pisaster, nor the fact that its core seems to be inexplicably healing over. It withdraws its mind from Mantis', and Mantis has an inexplicable feeling of being doused in cold water. In an attempt to hopefully stop the same thing from happening again, she looks around for a suitable shell; she spots remains from an exploded Baldorfish, inexplicably the only one that has left any shrapnel. She darts over to and grabs the remains, and begins siphoning her life-energy into it; the remains slowly repair themselves into what looks like an unexploded baldorfish with a little Mienfoo icon on the front. It floats up, then begins flying around, testing out its own mobility.

Pisaster gives a harsh, guttural, grating sound in annoyance. Then it begins flashing once more and suddenly an extremely cold wind blows in at Mantis. Oddly, though, she herself doesn't feel cold at all; it seems her helpful Baldorfish is taking the brunt of the attack, a thin layer of ice forming on its surface. It looks to be in a bad state, flashing from deep in its core in a pattern that suggests it will self-destruct soon. Mantis glares at Pisaster - no-one hurts her helpful floating orb thing - and then darts towards it, clenching her fist. She smashes her fist straight into its core, prompting another harsh squealing screeching sound.

As Pisaster remains doubled over, as it were, in pain, it also considers its attack. A rough translation of its thought process would be something like this: 45% energy? How do I know whether my energy is 'below 45%'? What should I do, should I play it safe or give myself a boost? Actually, yeah, that second one sounds appealing... It begins the same series of flashes and beeps as considerably earlier, and is once again bathed in an evolution-like white light, which again fades away to leave a considerably tougher Staryu. Testing out this theory, Mantis delivers another harsh blow to Pisaster's core, as best she can reach it; at the same time, a portion of Pisaster's energy transfers itself to Mantis.

Drain Punch - 11% energy (Pisaster), 4% energy (accuracy roll 50, needed 100 to miss)

Notes
- Pain Split is a Status-class attack, so I didn't count it as a damaging move.
- Your Pokémon have absolutely no idea that their health and energy are measured in percentages. Pisaster just acted randomly between Chill and Cosmic Power, and it landed on Cosmic Power.
- Drain Punch cost 9% energy but restored 5% energy, so I called it a cost of 4%.

I'm assuming Mantis is poisoned now? You forgot to note that in her status (and I think also forgot the poison damage). Or was she not quite close enough for it to have an actual effect?

Hm... chill while you've still got the sub to protect you, unless Pisaster is also ordered to chill in which case you should drain punch some more energy away. Continue drain punching energy every time it chills. Otherwise, use force palm and aerial ace.

Chill/Drain Punch (energy) ~ Force Palm/Drain Punch (energy) ~ Aerial Ace/Drain Punch (energy)

Alright, to begin with, create a 15% Substitute, forcing Mantis to chill. Afterwards, you yourself should chill to restore a fraction of lost energy. (I'm not sure what the rulings are on draining energy from substitutes are...)

If drain punch bypasses substitute, or drains energy for whatever reason then you should use twister to get rid of Mantis' substitute. Otherwise, chill for a second time.

Round 4 Begin!

It seems like a long time before anything more happens. When it finally does, though, it's fairly dramatic, with one of the Baldorfish floating in the water detonating; an enormous sound rings around the arena, near-deafening both Pokémon.

Emitting a harsh grating sound, Pisaster focusses on the exploded, floating remains of the Baldorfish. It channels its energy into it, and the dead light in the mine's core lights up again; it suddenly lifts up, then darts towards Pisaster, facing Mantis' near-identical clone. Mantis seems remarkably unimpressed by this, and in fact seems more concerned with taking a nap: she lies down, resting her head on her hands, and simply drifts into a sleep.

Pisaster decides to sort of follow her lead. Staryu don't sleep, but they can rest; it simply enters a trancelike state, allowing its natural recovery processes to come into effect. It is at about this point when Mantis wakes up. Seeing that Pisaster is resting, she approaches her opponent's Baldorfish, then nervously punches it on its side; a spark of electricity leaps from it to her, and oddly enough, she actually feels better for it.

Coming out of its trance, Pisaster begins quite possibly its most drastic movement so far. It lays down on the ground, floating underneath Mantis' clone; then it begins spinning, whirling around faster and faster. A spinning column of air begins to form above it, quickly becoming a veritable tornado; while it's impossible to see inside it, the winds are tearing the clone to pieces, scattering debris far and wide - one piece even smacks Espeon in the head. The twister dies away fairly quickly as Pisaster ceases its spinning, leaving no trace of the clone. Mantis glares - her clone, it destroyed her clone! She leaps at Pisaster, aiming a slash at its core; its own Baldorfish leaps in the way, and the slash hits it, carving a deep gash in its side; as Mantis leaps away, it detonates, a tiny explosion consuming the debris and leaving no trace of where the clone once was.
