Arena: Outside the Battle Arena

The battle takes place right outside the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena facility, out in the open air. The immediate area is covered in nicely manicured grass and a few flowers. The Arena building itself is surrounded on three sides by water and a small pond sits on the other side of the battlers, so water moves can be used and Water-types that need to swim can do so. The battlers cannot move away from the immediate area, so heading towards the plaza or another facility is forbidden. Maps of the general area can be found on this page.

Since this match is happening so close to the Arena, it seems such a shame not to follow Greta's rules... or, at least, a variation on them. As such, both battlers will send out their Pokémon and attack for three battle rounds (a total of 9 attacks per Pokémon) before the ref calls a halt. After the three rounds both Pokémon are recalled and unable to continue in the current battle, and their current health, energy and status are noted for later. Both trainers will then send out their next Pokémon and continue for the next three rounds. At the end (which should be nine total rounds), the health and energy of all Pokémon is totaled and whichever trainer has the highest score wins.

The following rules also apply:

-If a Pokémon has fainted, either due to HP loss OR energy loss, the battle stops right where it is (even if it has not yet been three rounds) and both Pokémon are recalled. Fainted Pokémon DO still count toward the final score, but as either their health or their energy is at 0% they won't add anywhere near as much.

-If, at the end of the three rounds, a battler is afflicted with a status condition, that condition detracts from their final score as follows:

Paralyzed, Burned, Confused: -10 points
Poisoned, Attracted: -15 points
Asleep, Frozen: -20 points
If the Pokémon has more than one status condition, only the first one they were afflicted with detracts full points; all others afterwards only detract five, no matter what they are.

As an example of how scoring works: Trainer A sends out a Treecko and Trainer B sends out a Turtwig. Treecko and Turtwig battle for three rounds; Treecko finishes with 64% HP and 72% energy and Turtwig finishes with 71% HP and 59% energy. Treecko has also been poisoned by Toxic. Both Pokémon stop battling and so their scores would look like this: Turtwig (71H + 59E = 130), Treecko (64H + 72E - 15 [poison] = 121). Therefore, Trainer B (Turtwig's trainer) would have the lead with 130 points over 121.

As far as TCoDASB battles are concerned, experience is determined like this: all Pokémon get the usual 1 experience point for being sent into battle, and if one Pokémon actually knocks another out it will get the 1 experience point as normal. If neither Pokémon faints at the end of three rounds, the one with the lower score (Treecko in the above example) is considered knocked out for the purposes of experience, so Turtwig would get the extra 1 exp.

Other: Only first stage/baby pokemon may be used (no non-evolving pokemon).

Alright, I'll start with Cheryl then.

Sleep Powder if she hasn't set up any sort of protection (substitute, protect, safeguard, etc.). If she has, set up your own Safeguard instead. Then go ahead and Solarbeam for the sheer murder of it. If she's created clones, arc the solarbeam so it'll strike through them until it hits her; if she's protecting, Growth. And of course, if she changes the weather, Grass Knot instead.

Sleep Powder / Safeguard ~ Solarbeam / Growth / Grass Knot x2

No Taunt on Wailmer D: (or Safeguard for that matter)

OK, Dive down on the first action, hopefully stopping any Sleep Powder getting through, or forcing a Safeguard, and stay down. Next up, Ice Beam. If you can't fire one of those from underwater, Aqua Ring instead. Finally, if Solarbeam got through the water last action, Protect. If not, Ice Beam, or Amnesia if you can't Ice Beam from underwater.

Dive down ~ Ice Beam/Aqua Ring ~ Protect/Ice Beam/Amnesia

Hope that made sense.

Round One Begin!

No sooner had the referee blown his whistle than the two competitors sprang into action. Sisavac moved first, taking a big gulp of air and diving down to the bottom of the pool at the south edge of the arena. Cheryl, wondering what to do under these circumstances, decided eventually to continue normally, and sent out a cloud of green spores from the bulb on its back. However, these spores simply landed on the surface of the water, out of Sisavac's reach and not affecting her at all. She looked down at her opponent in the water, and saw her return the gaze and smirk knowingly.

Sisavac, while underwater and out of harm's way, was starting to have some trouble holding her breath. Fortunately, she wasn't that vulnerable, and figured she could stay underwater for a while longer. The only problem was what move to use for her next attack. She was told to try and use Ice Beam, which would be effective, but she was underwater, so it might be dangerous. Her chosen course of action, in the end, was to play it safe, and thus she manipulated the water around her into a swirling ball of energy. Even slowly running out of breath, she was feeling refreshed and invigorated already. Back on the surface, Cheryl was charging up energy for an attack, and after seeing the Aqua Ring ripple at the pond floor, unleashed the energy in a beam of white-hot light, which broke through the pond surface and hit Sisavac straight on. Although the water somewhat lowered the strength of the blow, she was still badly hurt.

After being hit by that attack, Sisavac was somewhat dubious of the water's safety. That, and the commands from her trainer, led her to put up an almost invisible shield in front of her, to block against the next onslaught. This, however, was unnecessary - when Cheryl unleashed her attack, it hit the water and refracted away, sparing the target from any more damage.

Ref Notes:
  • Because SolarBeam was being used through water, I halved the base power (as if it were Rain Dance) and also, due to refraction in the pond, lowered the accuracy to 90%. However, as the attack was started aboveground in fine weather, the energy calculations are the same as if they were used normally.
  • SolarBeam missed on Action 3.
  • Since this is guaranteed to be a short battle, I've decided to use this as a tester area, so to speak - I decided recently to switch to Kratos's advanced scale, and didn't want to affect any battles in progress. So, the calculations might be a little different from my other battle, and that's why.
  • Ampharos commands first next round.

OK, well you're not asleep, so that's good.

Start off by surfacing (not actually using the second part of Dive, just coming back up so you can breath) and using Hail. Hopefully that'll stop any future Solarbeams, at least for now. Next up send out a Blizzard, unless Hail is not in effect, then just Ice Beam. The same thing on the Final Action please. Sleep Talk if you're ever asleep.

Hail/Sleep Talk ~ Blizzard/Ice Beam/Sleep Talk x2

I hate it when I have a type disadvantage >:(

Right! Let's go then... Wait till the wailmer resurfaces and Sleep Powder on the first action, again if you missed. Once they're asleep, leech seed and substitute for 15% of your health if you have actions left.

Round Two Begin!

For a Pokémon like Wailmer, who doesn't have gills, staying underwater for long periods of time is not exactly the most pleasant experience. So, after spending a round underwater, Sisavac came up for air, and at the same time covered herself with an ice blue glow, which then released itself into the sky in a beam of icy energy. Almost at once, a swarm of black clouds gathered over the area, and hailstones proceeded to rain down, attacking both battlers. Cheryl tried to release a cloud of green spores, in an attempt to pacify her opponent, but the cloud was blown off course and away from both Pokémon.

Sisavac smiled, even as the hail blew into her and continued to cause her damage. Now that the hail had started, she could deal some revenge. Summoning a strong wind through the arena, she blew the ice in the clouds in a sharp burst towards Cheryl, who winced in pain when she was hit. She was still very much in action, though, and created another burst of pale-green poisonous powder. Unfortunately, another wind hit the arena, and the attack was blown away into another part of the island.

Taking advantage of her extraordinary luck, Sisavac decided to send her opponent a thank-you gift - in the form of another sharp, icy blizzard to the face. Cheryl was badly hurt and extremely annoyed by her unlucky streak, and thus decided to have one last try. Once again, she released a cloud of green powder towards Sisavac, but this time, she got lucky - the Wailmer was hit by the spores and drifted off to sleep.

Round Three Begin!

While Sisavac wasn't capable of much while asleep, that didn't mean she was entirely powerless. However, she was not able to damage her opponent, and instead simply rested in the pool, recovering energy. Cheryl was also reluctant to attack, and instead released a chain of vines down from the bulb on her back, absorbing energy and nutrients from the soil below the arena. Afterwards, hoping to get one final edge on their last round, both of them took another brief rest to restore their stamina.

Sisavac, still asleep, was taking another rest in the arena's pool, but Cheryl in the meantime was primed for action. Focusing her aura, she connected the two of them in a beam of green energy. Still deep in concentration, she absorbed some of Sisavac's energy and transferred it to herself, in one last act of desperation.

The referee called out to the trainers to restore their Pokémon, noting the limitations discussed in the battle's description. The two of them took out their Poké Balls and recalled their Pokémon, but not before the referee's Abra had analyzed the two battlers and worked out their respective strengths. Pulling out a calculator, he carefully totaled the scores and wrote them down on his notepad, noting to himself the slight advantage Pathos's team had, at least in terms of points.

*sigh* I would use Zvoniti, but he didn't have his Soothe Bell at the beginning of the battle. Let's make this interesting then. Zbrka, you're up! Near the edge of the pool please.

Well, I would start off with Hypnosis, but judging by the fact that the last time I used it it always hit, my luck is just about ready to bite me in the butt. Yawn first, and then a Calm Mind for a bit of help. Finish with Psychic if you would. If she uses Mirror Coat on the last action, switch with Zen Headbutt. If she tries to protect against Yawn in any way (that includes Diving down) on the first action, another Calm Mind instead.

Alright. Since we're faster, set up a substitute for 10% of your health, which should take that yawn nicely. Toxic while they're calm minding, preferably try to do so exactly while they're calm minding and, you know, stop them. If toxic hit, venoshock[/v], and if it missed, giga drain.

Round Four Begin!

Once the referee had finished writing down his notes from the past few rounds, he signaled to the battlers to send out their next Pokémon. They both agreed, with Pathos sending out a large, octopus-like creature with what appeared to be glowing red eyes into the pool on the southern side of the arena, and Ampharos choosing a yellow duck with a tan beak. The two trainers gave out their commands, and then the ref blew his whistle to indicate the start of the round.

Pathos's Tentacool, Edyta, was first on the draw, channeling a flow of white energy towards a spot next to her, where it accumulated and transformed into an exact, albeit lifeless, replica of herself. Her opponent, Zbrka, looked down into the pool, seeing that Edyta's duplicate could block out her next attack, so rather than trying to attack her she simply sat down on the floor next to the pool, focusing her mind's power. After about half a minute, she stood back up, not only feeling her power enhanced but also feeling safer, having reinforced the barriers of her mind.

Having felt invigorated by this power boost, Zbrka tried to see if she could get another one, considering Edyta was only watching her intently from the pool. However, when she sat down and tried to focus, her concentration was blocked by Edyta spitting out at her a purple blob of dangerous poisons. When it hit her, it slowly began to soak through her skin and into her bloodstream.

Temporarily distracted by the pain, Zbrka had forgotten what it was she was supposed to be doing last action, and was slightly confused. However, she was shocked back to her senses by Edyta shooting out a spray of green toxins. Unlike the last attack, though, the poison actually did quite a bit of damage to her skin, and when it soaked into her bloodstream, it started to react with the poison already there, causing jabbing pains from inside of her. Taking the pain with her boosted defenses, she then focused on Edyta. Closing her eyes, she wrapped her opponent in a purple glow, and started manipulating her to fly across the arena and slam into various things - fortunately, missing the various Frontier buildings in which battles were still occurring. When she had finished, she opened her eyes, satisfied she had caused some damage, until she saw Edyta vanish in a puff of white smoke - she had accidentally targeted her Substitute instead.

Why does Edyta have 89% health? Sub was for 10% and cloud nine cancelled the hail.

Anyhow. Acid Spray if he attempts to Calm Mind again, Mirror Coat all psychics, and Giga Drain otherwise. If he tries to zen headbutt (or just gets in the fountain for some reason), make sure you're on the opposite side of the fountain so it'll take him a while to reach you. Since that will hopefully take him an action and I don't anticipate him calm minding in the water, switch to Skull Bash if he does try to zen headbutt (or just physically attack you in any way). Of course if he's not trying to physically attack you and is using psychic, still mirror coat it, and is doing something else entirely, just giga drain.

Well, since he's ordered to possibly use Mirror Coat on all of the actions we have increased priority this round, which is good. Start off with a Psychic to force a Mirror Coat, and then take it. Encore the next action as to force Mirror Coat for the rest of the round, then finish off with a Zen Headbutt.

Psychic ~ Encore ~ Zen Headbutt

3vs3 single
Style: Set
DQ: Standard week
Damage Cap: 50%
Banned Moves: OHKO's

Round Five Begin!

Ampharos's commands were very bittersweet to Zbrka. Sure, after a good buttering up that stupid tentacool would be stuck firing off useless mirror coats, but first he'd have to use psychic (which wasn't that bad itself) and then later take that hit. Her headache would grow even worse! If that was even possible…

She had to do it, so she might as well get over it. Swallowing her fears, the little duck concentrated on Edyta. Already glowing in a vivid array of colors, the psychic tinted the jellyfish slightly purple as it slammed her into buildings, benches and the like. Although the super effective attack took quite a bit of health from Edyta, it didn’t destroy the terrain that much; this was much to the relief of many trainers who were still in the building. However, there were slight tentacool-shaped dents in the wall, and also a few indents in the ground. Things were not exactly the same as before.

After all the pain of getting thrown around like a ragdoll, Edyta was ready to retaliate. She was still glowing, even after the psychic left her; it was actually the mirror coat she had prepared all along. Shining in all the colors of the rainbow, the poison type unleashed a glowing pulse of psychic energy with twice the power of Zbrka’s at said platypus. Expecting the hit, Zbrka could do nothing but cringe as the huge beam of light hit her. I have to compliment this?! The psyduck thought, scowling as the pounding headache induced by the counterattack of her opponent’s assaulted her mind. She was still glowing, and asking for more of that horrid attack would be suicide!

Nevertheless, she listened to her trainer’s command (stupid Ampharos!) and began to ramble on about how smart her enemy was. “Wow, that was a really smart move…” she started, faking a blush to look convincing. “That really hurt! I’m impressed, actually. Mind giving me an encore?” Winking at Edyta, she employed a psychic suggestion saying that it really would be a good idea. Hopefully it would work, and at least she obeyed orders…

Well, she tried. The jellyfish showed no notable reaction. Staring at the psyduck unnervingly, Edyta sucked a vibrant green substance off of her. The aura surrounding Zbrka was actually a giga drain, and the green blobs that were being leeched off of her was her life force. This was not as painful as the mirror coat, thankfully, but the duck was still ready for vengeance. And if it went well, it wouldn’t activate magic coat!

Entering into a state of calm, Zbrka inhaled and exhaled. In and out, in and out, the deep breathing helped her concentration and get ready for her attack. Her headache would not stop this headbutt; it would not do anything to hinder it and that was that. Her skull shining with psychic energy, she ran across the fountain and slammed into Edyta. And while the jellyfish was supposed to hit back, she was so startled by the powerful hit that she ended up not doing anything at all.

Notes:

So sorry this is terrible, everyone. This is my first real reffing, and... yeah.

I figured the fountain wasn't so big that it would take an action to get to. I tacked on an extra two points of energy to show that it did effect things, though.

The zen headbutt flinched, and the encore missed.

I'm using Kratos' calculator, so feel free to tell me if I got something wrong.

Ampharos attacks first next round.

Calculations:

Psychic- Hit= 15% damage, 8% energy and 75 accuracy roll (needed 100 to miss). The critical hit roll was 48, needed 6 or under to activate. I guessed because you didn't specify mental intrusion that you would want it physical; doing it that way means there can't be a drop in special defense. It doesn't matter anyway because Edyta has clear body, though.

Mirror coat- Hit= 30% damage, 15% energy and 72 accuracy roll (needed 100 to miss).

Encore- Miss= 0% damage, 6% energy and 100 accuracy roll (needed 100 to miss).

Giga drain- Hit= 13% damage, 6% energy and 19 accuracy roll (needed 100 to miss). It restored 6% health, because I think you're supposed to round down in damage. The critical hit roll was 93, needed 6 or under to activate.

Zen headbutt- Hit= 12% damage, 8% energy and 35 accuracy roll (needed 90 or above to miss). The roll for flinching was 80 (needed 80 or above to activate). The critical roll was 24.

Problems!

Edyta is a she.
Tentacool are faster than psyduck, so Edyta should have gone first on all actions, meaning Giga Drain should have been encored, not that it mattered. That means there's no chance of flinch because Edyta moves first.

Sorry about calling Edyta a boy. I'll fix it.

I'm following Ampharos' logic on conditionals, meaning that using those makes you move last. You have to wait to see what the opponent does and then take action. Also, in the rules it says something similar:

There are also a couple of disadvantages to using conditional statements. First, they often rely on your pokémon paying attention to what its opponent is doing, then taking appropriate action. This means, though, that your pokémon needs to wait and see what its opponent does before it can attack--therefore, even if it's faster, it will be sacrificing priority in order to carry out its commands, which may make it vulnerable.

Is that wrong?
