Arena: Legislature Grounds of British Columbia

Victoria, British Columbia is known for many things, of which the beautiful harbor, the telescope, and the large amounts of rain are just a few. However one of the most stunning areas of the city is the Legislature buildings, home to the provincial government. The white-walled, green-roofed building displays both intimidation and beauty, with the golden statue of Captain James Cook looking on from the tip-top of the building. However, the battlers today have not come for a tour of the building, but rather, for a battle.

In front of the building is a massive lawn, trimmed to perfection. Off to one corner is the war memorial, and in the center is a small stone fountain for water-Pokémon, but besides that it is a flat expanse perfect for battling. Across the street is the harbour itself, tourists and buskers milled together to form a pleasant scene. However, the battlers won't be going that far.

Each team of Pokemon will start around the fountain (or in it in the case of something like a Goldeen) on one side of the path that intersects the lawn. The battlers can move throughout the large expanse as much as they want, but running across the lawn would take an action at least. As the area is very sacred to British Columbian heritage attacks that hit the building itself will result in a government officer banning that Pokemon from using the said move for the duration of the battle.

Hmm, Thallium and Aurum have no experience, so let's go! Also, we agreed to lower the damage cap to 49%.

Thank you for taking this!

Hmmm... You have always wanted to see his true potential, so Hohner, take the stage. Let's put you out with Preveza I think. She'll be in the pond

Hohner:

Well, I don't like the fact that you're in a speed tie with that Bulbasaur, so open up with an Icy Wind to give you an advantage. Next up just play it simple and hit 'em with two Psychics, Thallium that is. Make them the mental intrusion kind. If Icy Wind failed on the first action, use it on the second instead. If you're asleep at any time, use a Sleep Talk.

Icy Wind/Sleep Talk ~ Psychic @ Thallium/Icy Wind/Sleep Talk ~ Psychic @ Thallium/Sleep Talk

Preveza:

OK Preveza, you've got a good speed advantage over our opponents, so let's hopefully use that to our advantage. Start by using a Focus Energy. Maybe we'll get lucky? Next up use a couple of Hydro Pumps on Aurum. If he protects in any way try a Blizzard on Thallium. If you're asleep, go with Sleep Talk as well

Focus Energy/Sleep Talk ~ Hydro Pump @ Aurum/Blizzard @ Thallium/Sleep Talk x2

Well, Thallium. It's obvious what we should do. Sadly, the damage cap will stop us, but it's good enough.

Bide~Bide~Bide@Hohner

Aurum, let's use cheap methods, alright? Let's Super Fang the first action. Although I doubt there'd be enough water in the fountain for a Hydro Pump, let's assume the worst. So make Double Team clones of yourself. Do as many as you can. Finally,Swords Dance. If Super Fang misses, keep on trying it and push the other actions back as necessary, but always use Swords Dance on the last action unless Super Fang misses twice.

The video camera scanned the grounds once more. This time, there was something new. A winged human, checking his watch in front of the fountain. The security guard was about to do something, but then he realized that this must be one of the people involved with the battle that was to take place today. Sheesh, silly pokémon battles. Why couldn’t they have them somewhere more appropriate than the legislature grounds.

The human the guard had seen was at this time thinking about the possible repercussions of this battle. This was his first time in Canada, but he wasn’t sure about the risk of disturbing something and getting in trouble. He fingered his Xatu’s pokéball nervously, knowing that he’d at least be able to use it to get away if need be. But past that, it was time for the battle already. Where were the battlers?

Ah, there was someone, grabbing their Delibird’s leg as the poor thing did its best to support its trainer for the flight. They were right over the fountain when the small icy bird couldn’t take the effort anymore and fell from the air. There was a splash, and Superbird immediately shielded himself from the subsequent gush of water before helping the trainer out of the shallow fountain. Meanwhile, another trainer was walking up normally, through the entrance for a change.

The two trainers, bulbasaur and Ampharos, greeted each other with a handshake then each walked to opposite sides of the arena. bulbasaur tossed out his poké balls first, both of them landing on the grass next to the main path. In two flashes of light, a Bulbasaur and a Sandshrew materialized in the grass. At the same time, Ampharos tossed out his own two balls, one in the fountain and the other in the grass. The one in the fountain soon burst open to reveal a small blue seahorse pokémon, while the other ball released a little bell pokémon. The ref flew above the top of the fountain and took out two bright red flags, waving them to signal the battle to begin!

Preveza begins the round by focusing pretty intensely. She knows that if she focuses, she’ll be able to easily see her opponents’ weak points: a skill that will definitely prove vital. Meanwhile, her ally is preparing a gust of wind in his throat. A freezing one, to be exact. As soon as it’s ready, Hohner releases the Icy Wind across the arena. It hits both targets, freezing them to the bone and chilling their muscles.

The wind may be chilling, but Thallium withstands it without much trouble. Instead of recoiling from the damage like he normally would, he does his best to store the energy from the attack inside his body. Aurum, on the same side of the arena, also withstands the blow, and begins to charge at the fountain in the middle of the arena. He leaps up, and though landing in the water, he sinks his energy-filled teeth into Preveza. The blow shatters the Horsea’s focus immediately, draining her of almost all her power.

And it hurts, too. Preveza blacks out for a quarter of a second from the blinding pain. Arceus, it feels like that one blow drained half of her energy! But her opponent hasn’t receded; the Sandshrew is flailing around in the water. Just the perfect opportunity for her to pay him back! Slowly, the Horsea charges the biggest blast she can, and then lets loose a gigantuan stream of water from her nose(?). Aurum is blown clean out of the water, only to land next to Thallium. The Bulbasaur is currently enduring its own attack, a blast of psychic power from the jingling bell over there.

Well, Preveza thinks, That was successful! She quickly comes to the conclusion that she should do it again. So she charges up even more water in her snout, then jumps above the fountain rim to look for her opponent. But he’s not there…oh, what’s that brownish blur? Soon, the blur fades into three separate Sandshrews, all taunting the Horsea as she falls back into the water. Oh, it’s ON. Once again Preveza hops out of the water, turning her blast of water onto the furthest Sandshrew. The Sandshrew soon fades into nothingness, and the other two begin to snicker at the seahorse pokémon.

Now that he’s avoided that attack, Aurum sneaks a glance over at Thallium. The Bulbasaur is smiling evilly despite all the damage it’s already taken this round, and glowing with a reddish aura. He begins to run toward Hohner, glaring. It’s over for that thing. Hohner gasps at his incoming opponent, with no time to dodge. And then Thallium strikes, converting all of his pain into power and flinging the poor Chingling back into its trainer. Ampharos catches his pokémon and lets it back out again as it, never one to give up even after taking such a powerful attack, releases another burst of psychic energy at his foe. In the background, no one notices Aurum doing a strange dance to sharpen his claws and increase his power as the round draws to a close.

All right. I want you to set up a Safeguard shield on your first action. Then, Solarbeam and Giga Drain, all on Preveza.

Great work last round! Let's Chill first, then Super Fang Hohner twice unless he sets up a Substitute, in which case Fury Cutter twice.

Chill~Super Fang/Fury Cutter@Hohner~Super Fang/Fury Cutter@Hohner

Hohner:

Well, I think setting up a small Substitute is probably the best idea here, as I don't think two Fury Cutters will do much. Super effective as they are, the base power is insultingly low, even with the attack boosts. I doubt one Fury Cutter even with a Critical Hit will do over 10% damage. Then fire off two more Psychics Thallium's way if you please.

Substitute (10%) ~ Psychic @ Thallium x2

Preveza:

This has potential to be painful, but it shouldn't be too hard to avoid. Let's copy a strategy used by our opponent, shall we. Double Team for max clones. Next up fire off a couple of Blizzards.

Preveza, overhearing her opponent’s commands, immediately gets a great idea. She can probably avoid damage entirely—by pulling off her opponent’s previous strategy. Aurum was too slow to pull Double Team off, but she thinks she can do it pretty well. As she begins to furiously swim in a circle, her teammate focuses on reacting to Bulbasaur’s other set of commands. Ugh, Super Fang does NOT sound good. Better to avoid it. The Chingling begins to channel its life energy out into a physical form, a little white-and-green dragon doll. The doll, as soon as it’s created, begins to hop around—ready to protect its master at all costs.

Thallium and Aurum aren’t quite ready for their attacks yet, though. Thallium begins to think of what strategies his opponent is likely to use in the future of the battle. It would definitely be best to protect as well as possible against those. So the Bulbasaur concentrates, letting a thin, translucent veil appear around him and his partner. Aurum, on the other hand, is resting to recover the massive energy he used last round. Thallium doesn’t mind her opponent’s slacking—she would do the same under his conditions.

But then, the real fighting begins. Preveza, or more correctly six of her, raise their heads from the fountain and howl toward the air. Within seconds a freezing wave descends upon Thallium, with Aurum and his clone managing to jump away just in time. And almost as soon as the Blizzard begins to let up, Hohner begins to focus hard. After a moment, he releases an immense telepathic wave straight at the shivering Bulbasaur. Thallium is hit hard by the blast, crying out in pain as the blizzard fades away.

Aurum glances at his ally. That was just unfair, being double-teamed. He won’t let that Chingling get away with that! Channeling what little actual anger he can conjure into his claws, Aurum rushes toward Hohner with his claws glowing a light olive color. He slashes the thing’s Substitute, leaving a large gash in its side. Meanwhile, he glances back at his ally. The bulb on Thallium’s back is glowing with light, and the Bulbasaur soon releases a massive blast of solar energy at one Preveza. It hits, and the clone disappears as the others laugh.

And it is then that Preveza knows her tactics have been a complete success. Now, it’s time to celebrate by hurting her opponents a little more. Closing her eyes and focusing, she and her clones call up another snow-ridden wind, which rushes straight through her opponents. It’s a direct hit!...on one of them, anyway. Unfortunately for her, Thallium has managed to dodge the attack. The Bulbasaur is staring at her evilly. Oh, he has no idea what’s about to happen…And there it is. Thallium staggers back from the force of the psychic blast Preveza’s teammate just delivered.

The attack, though painful, is not quite enough to get Thallium to give up. Sure, he is pretty weak by now, but he never gives up, not ‘till the end! Concentrating, the Bulbasaur places a beacon in one of Preveza’s bodies. Hoping it’s the right one, he begins to drain energy. The clone disappears in a fraction of a second as Thallium sighs in self-pity. Aurum sees this, and begins to think that maybe it’s because he’s not trying hard enough. Well, his last attack worked really well. This one will surely work even better! With confidence he rushes forward, slashing the living out of his opponent’s Substitute. The next attack, he promises, will go to that Chingling itself!

Thallium pants a little as the referee waves his flags to signal the round to begin. If he takes any more damage now, it’s probably going to be over for him. So he uses his energy to create a somewhat translucent greenish energy shield around himself. On the other side of the field, Preveza is more than ready to take out the Bulbasaur, and lets loose another howling Blizzard. Though Thallium’s energy shield protects him, Aurum gets hit with the full blast of the attack. The safeguard around him even begins to start frosting over—a reminder to Aurum to not let it down early under any circumstances.

But Hohner doesn’t notice the Safeguard, instead spawning a glob of poisonous sludge in his mouth. He tosses the Toxic attack at Aurum, only to have it bounce off of the almost-invisible Safeguard and land in the grass. It sinks into the ground instead, and almost immediately the plants in the immediate vicinity begin to shrivel up. Superbird sighs. Someone’s probably going to get in trouble for that. But while he worries, Aurum runs forward, his claws again glowing with a greenish Bug-type energy. Slashing at Hohner once again, the attack even more powerful now, confident thoughts flow through his mind.

Almost oblivious to her partner’s suffering, Preveza again thrusts her seahorse-shaped body forward to create yet another blizzard as Aurum retreats back next to Thallium. The snow and ice comes, and obscures nearly everything until it retreats as suddenly as it came—only to reveal Thallium grinning smugly behind the same energy shield as before. It was a bit harder for him this time, though—he might be able to do it again.

So now it is again Hohner’s turn to attack. He studies the translucent glowy Safeguard that he now knows exists. Okay, so it blocks projectiles. But can it block THIS? The Chingling jingles a little to get Aurum’s attention, then begins to swing back and forth, releasing a wave of hypnotic psychic energy to match. However, as Aurum runs forward and slashes Hohner again—good arceus that’s strong—it becomes apparent that the attack didn’t work.

The final action, Thallium doesn’t actually move first. Only letting down his Safeguard, finally, he begins to think over what his next move should be. Preveza is ready to exploit this opening, calling her most ferocious blizzard yet to rain on her opponents. But Thallium sees it coming, using his vines to catapult himself out of the way. Aurum isn’t so lucky, however, getting caught once again by the full force of the blizzard. Hohner takes his chance to jump in right then, aiming a Psychic attack at his opponent; but Aurum barely feels any pain at all from it for some reason.

But that reason is irrelevant right now. This nonsense has gone on long enough, and Aurum is ready to finish the job. He runs to his opponent, the greenish energy again culminating in his claws. He slashes at Hohner, who has nary a chance to dodge the attack. And what’s worse—it hits his weak spot. With the critical hit of such a strong attack, the Chingling is blasted back into its trainer’s arms, unconscious. Aurum nods in success as his parther attempts to drain Preveza’s energy but chooses the wrong target. Again.

Arena Notes
•Some of the grass and walkways on Bulbasaur’s side of the field are getting a little frosted over.

Damage and Energy calculations
•Protect: 8% energy
•Blizzard: 16% damage (Aurum), 10% energy
•Toxic: 6% energy (Failed)
•Fury Cutter: 16% damage, 5% energy
•Protect: 10% energy
•Blizzard: 16% damage (Aurum), 10% energy
•Hypnosis: 4% energy (Failed)
•Fury Cutter: 28% damage, 5% energy
•Blizzard: 16% damage (Aurum), 10% energy
•Psychic: [10]% damage, 8% energy
•Fury Cutter: 59% damage, 5% energy
•Giga Drain: 7% energy

Notes
•Ampharos, you didn’t specify the targets of some of your attacks, but your description made it clear enough that I did my best to coordinate it.
•Blizzard would have frozen Aurum…had it not been for the Safeguard Thallium had set up. This Safeguard also blocked Toxic AND hypnosis.
•The third Blizzard missed Thallium.
•Psychic was basically useless because Aurum hit the damage cap from Blizzard earlier.
•The third Fury Cutter was a critical hit.
•Fury Cutter is now at its maximum power (320 Base Power, unless I’m doing it wrong).
•…And the last one would have hit the damage cap, if Hohner had had more than 49% health remaining.
•Thallium’s Giga Drain hit one of Preveza’s clones.
•That was awesome.
•Speed order, for reference: Horsea, Sandshrew, Bulbasaur

Next Round
•Bulbasaur attacks
•Ampharos attacks

Hi. I really need to stop neglecting ASB.

Thallium
If Preveza doesn't attack you on any given action, Giga Drain her energy.

Protect/Giga Drain (Energy)~Protect/Giga Drain (Energy)~Protect/Giga Drain (energy)

Aurum
If Preveza does not attack you on the first action, Fury Cutter, and make sure to swipe at all three (or more) with your claw. Second action, Sandstorm. Third action, Dig down. Otherwise, Protect.

Fury Cutter/Protect~Sandstorm/Protect~Dig Down/Protect

Let's do this! My calculations say that we have a 50% chance of winning.

2 vs. 2 doubles
DQ (not that it will come into play; I don't think any of us have ever gotten so much as a DQ warning before): 1 week
Damage Cap: 49%
Banned: OHKO, direct healing moves
Pokémon are restricted to 3 chills each.

As the next round begins, Preveza is overcome by a wave of slight shock. Is this really only the fourth round? Well anyway, her partner is down, and it’s all up to her now. She has heard her opponent’s commands and is almost certain she has found an effective strategy. Hopefully. So the Horsea opens her mouth wide—this time, however, instead of calling a blast of freezing wind, she releases a spread-shot of large bubbles. Thallium and Aurum create their greenish translucent shields at the same time, and the bubbles all harmlessly bounce off of them.

But this is what Preveza was hoping for. She just needs them to weaken their defenses a little…so that she can do this! The little Horsea raises her head to the sky yet again, and releases a silent cry. Within seconds, a cold wind has begun, and within more seconds a full-fledged blizzard is swirling around her opponents’ field. Thallium gasps at the incoming attack, again putting up a Protect, then looks over to ensure his partner’s safety. But no matter how hard Aurum tries to put up his own shield, he can’t. He just can’t. Thallium can only watch as the cold blizzard sucks away the rest of Aurum’s health and the Sandshrew falls to the ground unconsciously.

Preveza giggles. That was satisfying. Unfortunately, though, it was less than she really wanted to accomplish—and now she hasn’t enough energy for another one. She guesses she has only one thing she can do, and she thinks that she has enough energy for it—hopefully. Again, the Horsea sticks her mouth out, opening wide and releasing bubbles again. This time, it’s Thallium’s turn to fail at making a shield; but as the bubbles pop around him he feels almost nothing. Though he is tired, the attack has made barely a scratch on him. He looks across the arena at Preveza. The Horsea is struggling to keep conscious…but soon fails. The last attack took the last of her energy.

Thallium soon begins to come to the realization of this. He’s the last one standing! He won! Feeling great joy as he’s recalled into his pokéball, he gets ready for a long rest before his next fight. The two trainers shake hands, and then the referee comes up to discuss the prizes involved.

Damage and Energy calculations

•Protect: 10% energy
•Protect: Failed
•Blizzard: 16% damage (Aurum), 11% energy
•Protect: Failed
•Bubble: 3% damage (Thallium), 4% energy

Notes
•Aurum’s Protect failed on action 2.
•Because of this, Blizzard managed to hit him, and…he was KOed.
•But on the last Bubble attack, Preveza also ran out of energy.

And now for the fun stuff…
That’s right, the prizes. First, though, I’d like to say that that was a very fun battle indeed. At no time in the battle did it become a chore to ref at all, and that was probably the most enjoyable double battle I’ve reffed yet! So now for the prizes. Let’s start with EXP. If I am correct, Hohner gets 2 EXP, Preveza and Aurum both get 2 EXP, and Thallium earns 3 EXP. If I’m right in assuming that the pokémon don’t earn extra EXP when they’re already down. In addition to that wonderful EXP, bulbasaur gets $16, I get $10, and Ampharos gets $6. I hope I get to ref for you guys again sometime. Cheers!

:o That was fast! And well-crafted! Thank you for reffing this, and I do hope that you did enjoy reffing this. I sure enjoyed reading your reffings.

Good game, Ampharos! (We must have another battle)

Not to be a sore loser, but why did the last Blizzard take 11% energy while all the rest took 10%?

If there is a liable and significant reason, good game bulbasaur, and thanks for reffing Superbird!

Ended in 4rounds btw

Negrek gave this post a spamming warning
