Arena: Northwind Field

The Northwind Field is a fabled place, supposedly located far, far away, past the equally-fabled Fiery and Lightning Fields. Traverse past the endlessly-stretching swaths of ground and snow, and you’ll finally reach a great alcove, surrounded at three sides with rock walls. Tucked into the back is a sizeable pool of water, large enough to fit most aquatic Pokemon.

As soon as the challenger is transported to the alcove, an invisible, but very solid, divider will erect to seal off the arena completely. There’s no running back to earlier portions of the Northwind Field after the battle has started. This certainly doesn’t mean that either Pokemon will have insufficient space to maneuver, though; the area where the battle will take place is approximately one hundred and fifty meters long and one hundred meters wide.

As the name suggests, the Northwind Field is rather far up north. This means that it’s quite the chilly place, if the abundant snow wasn’t evidence enough. And as is suggested by the ‘wind’ in its name, the barren meadow isn’t without its occasional gusts. Every three rounds a 100% accurate, 70 base power Icy Wind will sweep through the arena, damaging both battlers as well as slowing them down.

If one were adventurous enough to clamber up the rock walls and peer over the edge (you can’t go any further than that due to more invisible barriers, so don’t try it), they would notice that the alcove is ringed by clear, cold water. For some reason, though, the pond tucked in the back won’t respond to any Pokemons’ elemental powers, no matter how strong; instead, the liquid surrounding the field will froth and roar in response. If any Pokemon uses Surf, the wave will be gargantuan, coming from the north, east, and west all at once and crashing into the enclosed area, though the user will be miraculously unharmed. Usually, the water from Surf runs off back to where it came from, or just seeps back into the ground almost immediately, but since the Northwind Field is surrounded on all sides by walls and the ground is rather impervious, the arena will remain flooded for the next two rounds, after which the water will have found its way into the hard-packed soil. During the first round, it’ll be at a depth of about one meter, while during the second round the depth will be half that.

Mink's up.

Use that classic Work Up (x2) and Tail Slap strategy. If they Detect on that last action, Work Up again; if they Reflect, Thunderbolt.

Work Up ~ Work Up ~ Tail Slap/Work Up/Thunderbolt

why don't you have bullet seed yet

Suicune, use Surf. Since Mincinno are less than half a meter, Mink should be paddling water.
Then, wait for her to Work Up and use Psych Up.
During these two actions, edge towards the pool at the back as much as you can.
If, on the final action, Mink comes towards you and seems to want to use Tail Slap (though how likely she'll be able to in the water, I don't know), go for a dodge-and-attack Dive, swimming into the pool so you're actually completely submerged. Also use Dive if she Works Up instead, though since you didn't Detect it's not likely at all. If she starts using Thunderbolt, though (e.g. sparking with electricity), Mirror Coat it right back.

ROUND 1

A male Trainer enters the now slightly dusty front room of Dragon's Den Simulations, looking around at the large displays. The door swings shut behind him and causes the door chime to sound, oddly loud for a bell of its size. Whirlpool gives the place a once-over and goes to take a seat, listening to the faint sounds coming from the back of the shop. A minute or so passes until a girl in a longcoat walks out from the back and works out the upcoming battle with the Trainer. Money is exchanged and he's invited into the back of the shop.

They pass by a non-descript door where there appears to be some kind of commotion going on behind it, going through numerous hallways and other doors before eventually entering a door with a green light above it and stopping inside. It's a small room with bare walls the size of a garage, which seems to have been fashioned into a lobby. There's a large, thick glass window that shows a hall-sized room through it, and a door that appears to lead to the same area. To the size is oddly enough, a steel plated door. With a few exchanged words, the girl goes through the steel plated door and Whirlpool through the plain one to the open room, taking in the decent size of it. Remembering the purpose of the place, he picks a Pokeball and throws it to the ground just as the floor begins creaking and shaking. Slanted platforms rise from the ground and tiles draw back to reveal pools of water, as the light of Whirlpool's Pokeball dims, and forms into the shape of a Minccino, Mink.

The overhead industrial lights give off a strong glare, and suddenly Trainer and Pokemon find themselves in an icy rock alcove, with a large pool of water to their sides and back. Mink and Whirlpool take a few steps forwards, Whirlpool suddenly crashing into an invisible barrier between himself and his Pokemon. Mink turns backwards in a bit of worry, but a few encouraging words from her Trainer urge her forwards. As she reaches the center of the alcove, a static-y mess appears at the top of the rock wall across from Mink. It forms into the fabled Aurora Pokemon Suicune, who stands on top of the rock alcove looking down at its opponent with a cool stare.

Suicune leaps down from the rock cliffs gracefully, landing with only a soft thump on the hard packed dirt. Raising its head to the sky, it makes a small keening noise and the stone walls start to shake slightly. Mink yelps as water rushes into the alcove and slams into her, though somehow it's flowing over Suicune's head. She's battered around by the water, which quickly fills the bottom of the alcove and leaves Mink paddling near the surface of the water.

Mink is thoroughly uncomfortable now; soaking wet, chilled, and water up her nose. Pushing these thoughts away, the Minccino begins to think positive thoughts, and lashes her tail through the water. She pushes her head higher out of the water and takes deep breaths and exhales slowly as Suicune watches her from its vantage point on the rocks across from her. Mink lets herself sink back into the water and looks carefully at Suicune before paddling backwards slightly.

After a few seconds of awkward eye contact, Mink realizes that Suicune is waiting for her to make a move, as it stands immobile, eyes still on her. She continues her exercises, pushing away thoughts of discomfort and focusing on her next few actions. Her tail lashes back and forth through the water again, and she breathes in and out deeply before looking at Suicune again. It appears to be doing something now; and Mink feels an odd pressure in her head as Suicune makes a mental link with her. The Aurora Pokemon goes through the recent memories that Mink has had, feeling the same emotions that she did a second ago. As Suicune breaks the mental link, Mink sees that it's breathing as heavily as she is, and bouncing lightly from paw to paw instead of standing like a statue.

Mink swims forwards, using her tail as a propeller and rudder, though as she approaches Suicune her opponent dives gracefully into the deeper pool of water behind her, completely disappearing from her sight. With a frown, she swims further over to the pool to try to catch a glimpse of her opponent, who seems to be missing in the darker blue water. Mink decides there can't be much harm in trying to find her opponent and swims down underwater, looking around. When she runs out of breath, the Minccino surfaces with a gasp and moves back to shallower waters, on the edge of the pool. If

Squinting, she can see a blurred blue shape rising out of the pool, and to little surprise, it's Suicune. Mink is however, taken by surprise when Suicune flies out of the pool and slams into her, sending her flying backwards. She huffs as the water breaks her fall, though all the air is knocked out of her. Indignantly, Mink gets back upright and faces Suicune, tail lashing above the water furiously. She'd wipe that dumb look off of Suicune's face yet.

I commanded Suicune to Dive into the pool at the back, which is "large enough to fit most aquatic Pokemon". So I think it should've been able to dodge the Tail Slap.

Well it seems I can't write a reffing without making some kind of mistake. ;>_>

Actually I thought you'd meant for Suicune to dive into the water that flooded the alcove at first haha whoops. The reffing's fixed, in any case.

But why would Mink go and search for Suicune? The pool's at the very back of the arena, and Mink started near the front; presumably swimming all the way there would take at least an action.

Whatever, though.

She started swimming towards Suicune, and it dove into the pool when she was in attacking range.

Scald thrice. Mirror Coat any special moves. Also Mirror Coat if Mink is inaccessible (Protect, Detect, somehow out of range of your moves, etc. Substitute does not count).

Suicune very well can't know whether to Mirror Coat until I move, so set up a Safeguard, then Tail Slap galore (please crit at least on one hit this time). If by chance my logic is horribly wrong and you get burned, go ahead and try to Sing it to sleep; once that works, Thunderbolt.

Suicune and Mink stare at each other for a moment, before Mink looks away angrily and raises her arms, moving in a circle in the water. The air where she traces her paws begins to glow a light green, and as she lowers her paws, the light falls in a ring around her before fading and leaving a slight shimmer in the air. As this happens Suicune watches closely, hardly moving or making a sound.

When Mink appears to be finished, the Aurora Pokemon draws a paw in a circle, making a stream of water rise from where it touches. The water begins to bubble, and with a flick of its paw, Suicune sends the water flying towards the Minccino. Mink yelps and curls into herself as the boiling water splashes on and around her with a hissing sound. There's a brighter shimmer in the air around her and she trusts that the light she created earlier took away some of the heat from the water, though it still hurt.

Making a face, Mink moves closer to the outer stone wall and begins to swim towards Suicune. Its opponent does nothing but stand and watch, though as Mink gets closer it drops into a defensive stance. Mink pulls herself together and tenses her legs. With a cry, she leaps out of the water at Suicune, tail lashing furiously. It flinches back from her attacks, but doesn't make a sound as Mink batters it with her tail. When she lands back in the water Suicune takes a few steps away to put some distance between them, and lowers its head to the receding water.

Suicune draws a circle on the surface of the water, causing a stream of water to rise and float in the air in front of it. As it looks at it, the water begins to bubble and steam, and with a flick of its paw Suicune sends the water towards Mink. Mink tenses as it flies towards her, and curls in on herself as it makes contact. Her skin's feeling really raw now and she looks at the air around her, to make sure the glimmer of green light's still there.

Mink winces and lets her body loosen up, letting the heat dissipate in the cooler water. She's feeling much better as a cool wind drifts by, and runs towards Suicune through the now rather shallow water. Jumping up, she leaps at Suicune and twists in the air, whipping it with her tail. One blow seems to catch Suicune by surprise, and Mink hears the breath leave it in a huff as she lands back on the ground. She quickly skitters away, eager to put some distance between herself and her opponent.

As she runs away, Suicune looks down at the point on its leg where Mink seems to have hit a nerve. Blinking, it moves the same leg forwards and draws a circle in the now rather shallow water again. The water around its legs flows into the stream that drifts up into the air, leaving a dry spot around it that quickly fills with more water. Once again the water starts to bubble and steam in the cold temperature, and flies towards Mink. She yelps as it hits her square on the back, and the green light around her flares up as the water drops to the ground and joins the thin sheet of water already there. Glaring at Suicune resentfully, Mink rubs her back and hopes Suicune stops doing that. She shivers and holds her tail close to herself, trying to keep comfortable.

Suicune's eyes flicker as it listens to a sound that doesn't seem to be there, before looking forwards and putting most of its weight on its front legs. Opening its mouth, Suicune makes a short low noise and stares at the water that rises up from the ground in front of it, forming a vaguely quadruped shape. It breathes out heavily, a light blue mist pouring from its mouth, before the water-shape takes on more detail and opens 'eyes', looking around curiously. Suicune nods to it and it nods back in response before turning its attention to Mink.

Mink looks the Substitute over carefully before muttering something to herself and taking a deep breath. She screeches sharply, the sound bouncing off the rock walls and around the two Pokemon. Suicune's watery Substitute flattens out into a curtain of water and encases it, vibrating lightly under the sound of Mink's echoing voice. Mink frowns slightly as Suicune appears to huff under its layer of water, and raises her voice again as the curtain of water shapes back into a sort-of Suicune.

Mink screeches again, the sound of her voice adding to the echoes of her previous screech and layering to make a louder sound. The water-shape in front of Suicune opens its mouth and flows into a curtain again, encasing Suicune and protecting it from the sound of Mink's cries. The water's vibrating rather quickly now, and it comes to a point where the water can't hold itself together any more and falls from around Suicune to the ground. It looks around cautiously before taking a step towards Mink.

Suicune opens its mouth slightly, breathing out lightly. A thin stream of water pours from its mouth and splashes against Mink, burning her wounds and making her wince slightly. The stream of water stops as Mink raises a paw to shield her face, and the water drops to the ground. Mink wipes the water away from her face with a frown, and blinks it out of her eyes.

Before the echoes of her shouts from moments ago can fade, Mink raises her voice and screeches at the top of her lungs, adding to the echoes racing around the stone alcove. Suicune winces as the sound finally reaches its ears, digging its paws into the ground and leaning backwards. As Mink watches it shift painfully with a touch of pleasure, it begins to glows with a multi-coloured light and stands still again.

With a flash, the light around Suicune disappears and there's a screeching sound twice as loud as the one Mink made, making her stagger back from the force of the sound. She cries out as the sound shakes the air around her, making her fall to the ground and cover her ears with her paws. As the sound fades, Mink's paws fall limply to the ground and Suicune looks up in slight amusement to see that Mink appears to have passed out, the green light in the air around her quickly fading into nothing.

Whirlpool calls words of appreciation to Mink and pulls out a Pokeball, the light passing through the invisible barrier to envelop and absorb the Minccino back into the Pokeball in his hand. Suicune looks directly at him through the barrier, appearing to issue a challenge to him with its eyes.

ROUND 4

Whirlpool reaches around for a Pokeball in his bag under the watchful gaze of Suicune, its eyes drawn to his hand as he throws one forwards. It bounces off the invisible barrier with a faint thonk sound, though the red light that pours from it passes through the barrier easily. As it solidifies on the other side, the bright white glow disappears and a Klink named Whirr is left in its place, with two shells hanging from a cord around one of its gears, bound in the shape of a bell, which doesn't appear to be working..? It spins slowly as it appears to regard Suicune.

They both appear to be looking over the other carefully, though it's hard to tell what Whirr is thinking from Whirlpool's point of view. He urges it to go forwards and meet Suicune, and with a slight bob the Klink floats forwards, further into the rock alcove. Suicune drops into a defensive stance as it approaches, and appears to smile as it comes to a stop just in front of it.

Whirr begins to spin faster as Suicune takes a few steps towards it, appearing to be panicking slightly. The Legendary pauses as a quiet noise passes through the stone hollow, and digs its paws into the ground sharply as a cold breeze blows by it. Whirr pauses and hangs in the air for a moment as it regards Suicune, wondering why it appears to be bracing itself against something when a strong, very cold breeze flecked with snow enters the alcove, ruffling Suicune's streamers but not appearing to affect it much.

Whirr makes a grinding noise as it's pushed towards the rocks suddenly, pushing against the wind as hard as it can. As the gust dies down, Suicune shakes itself slightly, just enough that the few snowflakes on it fall off, and it raises its eyes to look at Whirr again. The Klink is bobbing up and down in the air, feeling rather chilled. Extreme cold wasn't really good for metal, especially not in conditions like these.

Suicune breathes out slowly, creating a cloud of fog and steps closer to Whirr. With a twirl of a paw, a stream of water rises in front of Suicune and forms an orb, a few drops of water falling from it. Suicune stares at it intently and it starts to steam and bubble, before it flicks a paw and the water goes flying towards Whirr with a faint sloshing sound. The Klink begins to spin quickly as the water contacts it, making a bit of steam rise from its metal body. Whirr makes a grinding noise in slight annoyance and twitches slightly, sending water droplets flying. The sudden changes in temperature couldn't be good for its body.

Whirr pauses in the air for a moment, an small spark running over its body as the air around it crackles with energy. Suicune looks beyond it sharply and appears to sniff the air, sensing something moving around Whirr. More sparks begin to run over Whirr's body until a sparkling layer is coating it, shining a light yellow. There's a flash suddenly and the sparks disappear, replaced by only a few small yellow specks passing through its gears.

Suicune snorts, somewhat bothered by the smell of metal in the air coming from Whirr. It flicks a paw and another stream of water rises from the ground, rounding into an orb and pulsing in front of it. Suicune stares at it closely, as if it's trying to see through it and the water begins to bubble under its gaze. As steam starts to rise from the orb, Suicune lashes out with a paw and the water goes flying, splashing over Whirr with a hissing sound. It makes a creaking noise as the water drips off, and visible rust is starting to form between its gears. Whirr stops spinning, avoiding contacting its rusted areas, and begins to slowly spin the other way.

The sparks running over Whirr start to build up again until he has a bright coat of light around him, and he starts to shake with the effort of keeping it all controlled. Suicune bares its teeth as Whirr spins rather quickly, making a small noise whenever its rusted parts touch. The sparks go flying in every direction like a wave as Whirr pauses in the air and twitches. Suicune flinches back as a waves of electricity hits it squarely on the side, passing through its internal water supply. It makes a growling noise and rears up on its hind legs before crashing down heavily, with a slightly pained look on its face. Suicune shudders and the bell tied to Whirr starts to ring, a small, high pitched noise that makes the Klink stop spinning as it listens.

Suicune flashes a paw out and draws a circle on the ground, still shaking slightly. A stream of water rises inside where it touched the ground and floats up into the air, where it forms a sphere shape and pulses gently. Suicune stares intently at the water and twitches its nose as it starts to steam and bubble. It turns its gaze to Whirr, who begins to turn faster as the Legendary's gaze falls on it, and flicks out a paw. The orb of water flies through the air and splashes onto Whirr with another hissing noise, making the Klink shudder to a stop in the air as it waited for the water to drip off of it.

Whirr groans and begins to spin quickly, a few sparks beginning to run over its gears. Suicune's nose twitches as a coat of electricity builds up on the Klink, who begins to glow bright white. Whirr spins faster and starts to crackle as the electricity builds up, and it pauses in the air and shudders as the electricity flies off of him, spraying in every direction. Suicune flinches back as sparks fly at it, quickly absorbed by its internal water supply and making it shudder a bit. Suicune growls at Whirr as its paws stop shaking. That was it. It would tear the little metal thing into small pieces next round, for sure.
